AB - The paper presents a wear load capacity of crossed helical gears (gear pair
consists of a worm and a helical gear). Crossed helical gears are similar to worm gear
pairs, and it is logical to extend the load capacity calculation approach of worm gears
for the case of crossed helical gears. One of the disadvantages of crossed helical gear
sets is very high running-in wear. The paper explains the transition between running-in
and steady-state wear and proposes a joint wear calculation model. The paper outlines
a proposal to extend the calculation method for wear load capacity from a worm gear
pair to the case of crossed helical gears (a worm with a helical gear). This calculation
method for determining the wear load capacity of crossed helical gears is verified for
the cases when the wheel is of bronze CuSn12Ni2-C-GCB and sintered steel

AB - A multidisciplinary research method was employed with the intention to create a series of bio-inspired flattened airfoils, observe their aerodynamic characteristics, and analyse their applicability to small devices or to designs of high-speed trains, within the shortest period in the conceptual stage. A research specimen of a kingfisher, selected for biomimicry, was examined with the following methods: visual inspection, analysis of photographs, manufacturing quality control measurement with a 3D laser scanner, and microscopy. A basic multi-arc-line profile, re-engineered from the overlapped specimen shape data and based on the observations, was used for designing a series of seven derived airfoils. The aerodynamic characteristics of the bio-inspired airfoils were obtained with the panel methods at low and moderate subsonic speeds, while the small transonic difference method was used in the high-subsonic speed range. Basic and ellipse-like airfoils produce higher total drag at low and moderate velocities and higher forebody drag in the high-subsonic range when compared to derived and parabola-like airfoils. The obtained critical Mach numbers are in the range from 0.76 to 0.78, where three bionic airfoils show values equal to or smaller than the values of ellipse- and parabola-like airfoils. The profile with the shortest bio-inspired relative chord has a higher critical Mach number value than the parabola-like profile. The sonic lines above these profiles appear at close positions. The applied set of examination methods of the bio-inspired design is not time consuming and produces sufficiently good results in the conceptual stage. Therefore, a further development of unique and adjusted numerical methods and codes at pre-computational fluid dynamics run is encouraged, together with shape parameterization.

AB - In the times of significant development of high-speed train transportation and taking the primacy over the others, one of the major designing tasks is to predict accurately and fast the vehicle’s main performances, especially aerodynamics. Motivated by the bionic design of representative Japan’s train Shinkansen, the presented bionic design was based on the observations of the kingfisher from Serbian national heritage collection. The specimen beak shape has been measured, by laser scanning, and converted to a mesh. Afterward, the longitudinal cross-section of the beak was implemented to a bionic high-speed train design. As the critical, the conditions of the train’s forehead entering into the tunnel were selected, while the case scheme employed relative motion. The forehead contour distributions of the surface temperature, skin friction coefficient, and the pressure distributions, obtained with computational fluid dynamics, were used for the prediction of the transition zone extension. The anomalies in surface temperature behavior were additionally analyzed by pressure and density distribution inside the tunnel and over the forehead. Besides the gross time history of the pressure derivative of time is in correspondence with the referent, it was interpreted that the true biological form is not fully suitable for adoption for bionic design. The development of this design, employing contour simplification by the close parabolic function will continue in the future. This work suggests an economic and efficient approach to analyze the results of the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations adequate for the concept design stage.

AB - The aim of this research work is investigations of absorption characteristics of a circular seamless tube collision absorber filled by rigid polyurethane (PU) foam under axial load. Shrinking of circular tube passing through cone bushing starts after absorber is activated at the moment of collision. The energy absorption realises in three ways: elastic-plastic deformation of the tube wall, friction between absorption elements and compression the rigid PU foam inside the tube. Using rigid PU foam, as the seamless tube filler, in the process of collision energy absorption increases absorption power in comparing to with only empty tube, as well as gives gradual increases of deformation resistance during deformation process. Experimental research was prepared and realized in the laboratory using the scaled samples. The effect of rigid PU foam, configuration of absorber filled by PU foam on the absorption power and manufacturing technology of the samples, are considered and discussed in this paper. The results indicate that the shrinking foam filled tube absorber has for about 18% bigger absorption power than the empty one. Formation of numerical model and numerical analyses of shrinking foam filled tube absorber were realized using ANSYS software package. Force vs. stroke (F(s)) diagrams obtained by tests and numerical analyses are in a good correlation which confirms formed numerical model as a suitable for further quasi-static analyses and for dimensioning the similar types of absorber.

AB - Manufacturing of railway vehicles require use of many different special support tools which have a role to simplify production process and to increase productivity. Beside, design of these elements requires a special care about worker safety. Subject of this paper is static strength analysis of the mobile lifting platform designed for railway industry. This type of mobile platform is used for worker outside of the wagon body and can provide operation up to 4000 mm. Platform was designed from steel tubes, square and circular cross section joined by welding and moving joints. Hydraulic cylinder, with adequate and controlled initial force, is used for platform lifting and lowering platform. Static strength analysis was done using finite element method by SolidWorks software package. Bearing in mind very complex construction of mobile platform, simplification of numerical model was done. Platform structure was divided in three subassemblies: working platform, folding scissors and lower chassis, and for each of them numerical analyses were performed. In accordance with purchaser requests loads were applied on the working platform, while the reaction force was measured at constraints located on the lower chassis and at the joint between the piston of hydraulic cylinder and scissors structure. Next to primary analysis of the main platform structure, static strength analyses were carried out for fences and stairs. All analyses were accomplished in accordance to valid standards. Obtained results showed that the assemblies of mobile platform, including fences and stairs, are able to withstand load of workers and required equipment without permanent deformation.

AB - Joint Stock Company for Passenger Railway Transport “Srbija Voz“ and for Freight Railway Transport “Serbia Cargo” has a different types of passenger wagons, freight wagons, electric-multiple units (EMU) and dieselmultiple unit (DMU) as well as locomotives that are not equipped with passive safety elements. With the aim to increase safety of these railway vehicles, with respect of requests defined by valid standards EN15227 and EN12663 directed to the modern concept of the bearing structure, intensive research work in the field of passive safety on different types of absorption elements was realized. Experimental and numerical investigations were realized on the following types of energy absorbers: tubes of square cross section which use folding process for energy absorption, circular seamless steel tubes which use expanding and shrinking deformation process as a ways for energy absorption, combination of two deformation processes at the same
time (shrinking-folding and shrinking-splitting) and shrinking circular steel tube filled by rigid polyurethane foam. Experimental investigations were performed in a laboratory conditions as well as in the real environment by collision of two passenger coaches. Numerical models were formed for mentioned types of absorber by using ANSYS software package and validations of them were done by experimental results. Developed numerical models were used for additional analyses of the impact of main parameters to absorption characteristics, as well as for dimensioning of absorption elements. As results of investigations shown that the shrinking circular tube absorber has most acceptable absorption characteristics, the one of possible mounting way of this type of absorber in the bearing structure of passenger wagon was suggested.

AB - The development of a modern motor vehicle is aimed at improving the performance in the field of dynamics (both longitudinal and lateral), economy, safety and ergonomic characteristics. Special attention is paid to passenger comfort. Torsional oscillations in transmission cause longitudinal vibrations of the vehicle, depending on inertial parameters, as well as on stiffness and damping of the transmission. Taking into account the complexity of the problem, it is estimated that it is useful to analyse the impact of the transmission design parameters on the longitudinal (fore and aft) vibrations of freight motor vehicle. For this purpose, the dynamic simulation method was used, and the analysis of the influence of certain constructive parameters on the longitudinal oscillations of the vehicle was performed using the sensitivity function.

AB - This paper presents an experimental investigation of the heat dissipation from stationary brake discs concentrated on four disc designs: a ventilated disc with radial vanes, two types of ventilated discs with curved vanes (a non-drilled and cross-drilled disc), and a solid disc. The experiments were conducted on a purpose-built thermal spin rig and provided repeatable and accurate temperature measurement and reliable prediction of the total, convective and radiative heat dissipation coefficients The values obtained compare favourably with computational fluid dynamics results for the ventilated disc with radial vanes and solid disc, though the differences were somewhat pronounced for the ventilated disc. The speeds of the hot air rising above the disc are under 1 m/s, hence too low to experimentally validate. However, the use of a smoke generator and suitable probe was beneficial in qualitatively validating the flow patterns for all four disc designs Convective heat transfer coefficients increase with temperature, but the values are very low, typically between 3 W/(m(2)K) and 5 W/(m(2)K) for the disc designs and temperature range analysed. As expected, from the four designs studied, the disc with radial vanes has the highest convective heat dissipation coefficient and the solid disc the lowest, being about 30 % inferior. Convective heat dissipation coefficient for the discs with curved vanes was about 20 % lower than for the disc with radial vanes, with the cross-drilled design showing marginal improvement at higher temperatures.

AB - Modern technology has made electric vehicles more accessible, which is important for the preservation of the environment. Although eco-friendly, from the standpoint of pedestrian safety, they may be baleful. The low levels of noise emitted by electric vehicles at speeds lower than 20 km/h are not sufficient for the pedestrian to become aware of the approaching vehicle based on sound. The topic of this paper is the research of sounds used to warn pedestrians of an incoming electric vehicle, while the goal is to single out the most suitable applicable sound based on an unique self-developed multiparameter methodology (which has been experimentally proved). The paper contains the results of the experiments, both of selecting the most suitable applicable sound and driving-range testing.

AB - The paper presents practical application of originally developed method for wayside measurements of wheelrail contact forces using strain gauges and an overview of recently developed similar methods presented by different authors. Presented methods were compared and some of their advantages and disadvantages were identified, including convenience for practical use. Some problems related to preciseness of location of the strain gauges application were emphasized. The main task for achieving reliable and accurate measurement
results using any method is to identify locations on the rail where it is possible to avoid crosstalk and to separate influence of the vertical forces and contact point position on the lateral forces measurements. Although different authors identified such locations, it appeared that in real on-site measurements due to existence of geometry imperfections of the rails, non-uniform foundation stiffness and other influencing conditions, calibration and some post-processing of the recorded data is often needed. Also, in order to obtain reliable results involvement of alternative ways for validation of the obtained results is very welcome including use of alternative methods like identification of the contact point(s) and comparison with calibration curve families.

AB - There are significant efforts around the globe to develop effective systems for energy production from
renewable sources such as wind energy. The replacement of so-called dirty technologies used for the
production of energy from fossil fuels with modern clean technologies led to the development and testing of
aerodynamic constituents of wind farms that can provide environmentally friendly and safe energy.
The objective of this paper is to present the analysis of the efficiency of vertical axis wind turbines that can be
installed on the building roofs in big cities. Primary design of the turbine construction was based on idea to
minimize the number of moving parts which could cause potential defects during the lifecycle. The rotor was
design as a composite structure that should be resistant to stresses caused by complex weather conditions
during the seasons.
Based on the results of two-dimensional numerical simulation of the vertical axis wind turbine motion, it can
be concluded that there will be enough buoyancy forces on the rotor blades to create a torque around the axis
of rotation and transform kinetic energy of the rotational movement into electrical energy.
Furthermore, comprehensive 3D simulation gives an even better picture of the streamlines and a clear path to
the design and testing of the prototype. Due to the constant induction of the buoyant force (i.e. the moment),
the continuous load on the construction will produce quieter motion of the blades, which is of great importance
for people who would live in buildings under this type of wind turbine.

AB - Development of passive safety elements represents one of the most complex fields of mechanical engineering
and requires practical and theoretical knowledge equally. A new standard EN15227 directed at railway vehicle
structures defines the dimensions and phases of deformation of the end-of-vehicle structure during collision.
Serbian railways have many passenger wagons over 20 years old that have no crash elements. These wagons
are equipped with a standard buffer in accordance with UIC regulations. The challenge, therefore, is to install
crash elements in line with the standard buffer as well as to define a moment when the crash element starts
energy absorption. A shrinking tube absorber has the most acceptable absorption characteristics as well as
being compact and compatible with the dimensions of standard buffer. In this research, the joint between the
standard buffer and the collision energy absorber is a shearing ring designed to break in a specific way at a
specific force. The standard buffer is designed to withstand a force of 800 kN without permanent deformation.
When the force exceeds this value, the spring in the standard buffer is blocked and the shearing ring breaks,
activating the energy absorber. The shearing ring is made from quenched and tempered carbon steel that has
passed adequate thermal treatment. Dimensioning of the shearing ring required a series of experiments to
determine mechanical characteristics using reduced- and full-scale samples. Final verification of dimensions
and working principles of shearing ring was done via collision of two passenger coaches.

abstract = "Development of passive safety elements represents one of the most complex fields of mechanical engineering
and requires practical and theoretical knowledge equally.
Final verification of dimensions
and working principles of shearing ring was done via collision of two passenger coaches.",

AB - Due to the predicted increase of electric vehicle worldwide market share, it is very important to analyse the energy consumption and the factors affecting it. The results of the research can contribute to a better understanding of the energy resources needed and vehicle autonomy, and also to the education of drivers and potential users. This paper deals with the analysis of various factors that influence the energy consumption in electric vehicles and the examination of mathematical model, developed to predict the autonomy of such vehicles. In addition to environmental, road and vehicle design factors, the influence of the driver on the energy consumption is also considered. Based on the conducted analysis, appropriate conclusions are drawn and a proposal for future research is given.

AB - The goal of this paper is to analyse the collected data on energy efficiency of electric vehicles from researches done by other authors and also to summarise all the factors affecting it. The majority of data available are obtained through simula-tions – therefore the emphasis in this paper will be placed on experimentally acquired data. The results of the analysis will be used for the planned e-bus eco-driving project for the purpose of Belgrade’s public transportation system. Currently there are only 5 (ultracapacitor type) e-buses operating in Belgrade city public transport, which makes only 0.2 % of all vehicles in rolling stock (making 16 % together with other electric-powered vehicles – trams and trolleybuses), but there are plans to acquire new 80 electric buses. With the rise of the number of electric vehicles, appropriate training of drivers is gaining more and more importance, and the results of the presented analysis make the basis for such training. This will hopefully increase the range of the buses used and help save the energy spent by public transportation, thus giving a little contribution to global fight for cleaner planet.

AB - Limited reserves of oil and the increasing environmental effect of its usage as a motor fuel represent global issue related to the constantly increasing number of motor vehicles. Therefore, the reduction of the fossil fuel consumed and the emission produced in internal combustion engines is the primary goal of the development of motor vehicle propulsion systems. In that sense, the present and the future of motor vehicles relies on hybrid drive systems, electric drive systems and drive systems which use hydrogen as a fuel (either by its combustion or by production of electric energy with the help of fuel cells). In this paper, the authors have presented the aforementioned motor vehicle propulsion systems by explaining their function and design, their basic elements and their functions. Authors have also analysed advantages and disadvantages of the mentioned propulsion systems in comparison to conventional internal combustion engine based systems, both technically and environmentally speaking, but also in relation to available infrastructure and energy resources.

AB - Agricultural machines and their implements are subjected to dynamic loads during farm operations. Depending on the type of operation (e.g. lifting or plowing), lower links of the three-point hitch mechanism are exposed to stresses caused by combination of bending moments and axial forces. In this paper we analyzed influence of the soil resistance during plowing in the lower link and the possibility of its failure. The stresses were measured using strain gauges at locations with uniform stress distribution in order to enable more reliable comparison with finite element analysis (FEA). Recorded stresses vs. time were used for identifying mean stresses and amplitudes for different plowing depth and different tractor speeds. Due to the geometry of the lower links and their joints in the three-point hitch mechanism, during plowing and transferring soil resistance, links are loaded not only by axial forces but also by bending moment in the horizontal plane. Under some assumptions, FEA provided us to make relations between the measured stresses and the loads that caused them. Measured stresses show that links have significant safety margin relative to tractor installed power and soil resistance, which enables the possibility of their design optimization. Obtained results may also serve for further analyses of fatigue life prediction, measurement of the draft forces etc.

AB - Aluminum carbody structures vs. steel structures have an increasing share in rail vehicle passenger fleet. New trams for Belgrade city transport with aluminum carbody structure after approximately three years of service, suffered from cracks. The first repair made by manufacturer was only partially successful. Two years after repair some cracks reappeared. This paper deals with some specificity of the aluminum structures repair process. The issue of the aluminum structures fatigue is compared with the fatigue of common carbody steel structures. Stress measurements in the repaired welding zone after second repair and reinforcement are presented. The test was performed with fully loaded tram under typical service conditions. Assessment of the future fatigue behavior is made based on the analysis of measured data.

AB - Methods of diagnosing aerodynamic characteristics are constantly developing in order to conduct the precise and energy efficient wind tunnel testing of transport vehicles in the prototype design early stages. This is of a special importance when facing the time/cost consumption problems of detection of the transition zone over the simplified design of the high-speed train. Herein the applied thermodynamics found a very significant role in the field of experimental aerodynamics. With the intention of detecting the boundary-layer transition zone the following measurements were applied: the infrared thermography, flow visualization, and drag force measurements. In addition, the CFD was applied to predict the flow behaviour and transition zone, solving PDE consisting of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, energy equation, and the equation of state for an ideal gas employing density-based solver. The thermal imaging defined the transition zone by simple application, and fast recognition, while the transition bounds were defined in the analysis. The flow visualization confirmed thermography results and the method itself as favourable, especially in the most expensive early phases of redesigning for aerodynamically optimized and energy efficient solutions. The numerical method was confirmed by the experiments, resulting in acceptable differences in the definition of the transition zone. For a better understanding of the phenomenon, the overlapped implementation of the presented methods focused on forced convection showed as the best solution. Based on the experiences of this research, development of the additional equipment and adjustments will be introduced in the future experiments.

AB - Subject of this paper is numerical analysis of the steel structure of biomass reservoir under hydrostatic pressure as well as additional loads. Reservoir was made from steel grade S235 and presents disassembly construction which contains eight walls of height of 5.5 meters placed on the floor in diameter of 10 meters. The floor is supported on eight legs along the scope and on the four center legs. Static strength analysis was performed by finite element method using 3D model obtained by the producer. Three load cases were analyzed: a) hydrostatic pressure obtained by water to the height of 5 meters, b) hydrostatic pressure and snow force on the upper flange of 5.9 kN and c) hydrostatic pressure and biogas pressure on under flange of 8 mbar. Numerical results were showed that the structure is not correctly defined. Maximal values of stresses are much higher than allowed for the steel S235, especially in the floor construction and on the joins between the walls and the floor. Reconstruction of the reservoir was suggested. The floor is reinforced by the under frame made from tubes of rectangle cross section and with additional supports in the central zone. These modifications were gave the lower values of the stresses but for use of full capacity of reservoir is necessary to increase thickness of steel cover of the floor and the walls on the height of 1 meter from the floor. Without any changes of the steel construction, producer decided to use reservoir with capacity of 1/5 of full (1m height of water) and moved prototype to farm where assembly of them started.

AB - Agricultural machines and their implements are subjected to dynamic loads
during farm operations. Depending on the type of operation (e.g. lifting or plowing), lower links of the three-point hitch mechanism are exposed to stresses caused by combination of bending moments and axial forces. In this paper we analysed influence of the soil resistance during plowing on the lower link and the possibility of its failure.

AB - Safety of railway vehicles is one of the most importance steps in developing and design of them. Passive safety elements have a role to reduce consequences of collision to a minimal by absorbing collision kinetic energy. Applying a proper standard and adequate design of railway vehicle structure has a direct impact on safety of railway traffic. One of many ways for collision energy absorption is the tube energy absorber which works on the principle of shrinking the foam filled tube passing through special cone bushing. Fill made from high density polyurethane has a role to increase deformation resistance during elastic-plastic deformation of the tube. Seamless tube was made from low carbon steel while the cone bushing was made from quench and tempered carbon steel. This type of absorber is designed to install in a line (behind) with standard buffer. Using this type of absorber energy absorption occurs by elastic-plastic deformation of the tube, friction between the tube and cone bushing and pressing of the foam. With the aim to show influence of the density of the foam on absorption power, experimental investigations of tubes filled by polyurethane foam of different density were done. Results of experimental investigations show that increase of density gives higher deformation resistance as well as higher absorption power. Further investigations will be directed to improve of absorption characteristics by chose a most acceptable density of foam.

AB - Contemporary design of the freight wagons requires lightweight and compact design of all subassemblies and components (e.g. bogies, brake systems etc.). Because of that several manufacturers of railway brake systems have developed a compact brake system having all major components located within bogie. This system despite the more complex construction than standard have more advantages (lower mass, reduced air consumption, higher efficiency of brake rigging etc.) This paper presents results and conclusions obtained by testing of two freight wagons of the same type equipped with classic brake system and compact freight car brake system (CFCB). The testing included brake performance test i.e. stationary test and slip brake test.

AB - This paper proposes an analysis of breaking of train coupling which occurred on the Serbian Railways (ŽS) in the period since 2007. by 2011. The problem of longitudinal dynamic forces, especially in freight trains, is most evident in the Serbian Railways, and for the reference period breaking of coupling of freight train occurred on a total of 201 cases (an average of 40.2 cases per year). Analysis of breaking of freight train coupling will be done based on number and
place of breaks relative to the length of the freight trains, driving regime of trains, speed before breaking of coupling, damaged parts, causes of train breaks, etc. This analysis will identify the main factors that affect more frequent emerge of freight trains breaking of coupling, in order to prevent accidents and improve safety in freight railway traffic.
