AB - The Global Energy Crisis necessitated improving research into new, renewable and alternative energy sources. Due to that, our focus is on the area of some phenomena and applications where different synthetic methods and microstructure property optimization achieved significant improvement in the electro physical properties of output materials and components. This is especially important for higher energy efficiency and electricity production (batteries and battery systems, fuel cells, and hydrogen energy). The improvement of energy storage tank capacity is one of the most important development issues in the energy sphere too. It is because of this very promising research and application area that we are expanding the knowledge on these phenomena through fractal nature analysis. So, the results obtained in the field of electrochemical energy sources, especially in electrolyte development, are taken into account the analysis of fractal nature optimization. Based on the research field of fractal material science, particularly electronic materials, we conducted research in micro-structure fractal influence in the area of electrochemistry. We investigated the consolidation parameters of Fe2O3 redox processes. The influence of activation energy, fundamental thermodynamic parameters, and also the fractal correction of electrode surface area through complex fractal dimension with recognized grains and pores, and the Brownian motion of particles is introduced. Finally, the electrochemical Butler-Volmer equation fractalization is obtained. These results practically open new frontiers in electrochemical energy processes performed through the Arrhenius equation within electrolyte bulk and electrode relations and more complete and precise energy generation.

AB - There is a progressing interests for polycrystalline diamonds and they have been more extensively used recently. This area has been intensively researched due to the outstanding potential of this material, and this necessitated presenting some of the latest application related to engineering in this paper. A better insight of polycrystalline diamonds properties can be achieved by intensively researching the surface structure. Samples of nanocrystalline diamonds grown by the chemical vapor deposition method are analyzed and accordingly, the focus of the research was the surface parameters and their structure. It is observed that waviness and texture are unique for any direction, their values are almost the same for the chosen directions and they vary approximately from -0.2 nm to 0.4 nm. Analyses of the parameters allowed a more detailed insight into the morphology of the surfaces of polycrystalline films.

AB - Featured Application The nano BaTiO3 modification could lead towards innovation in nanocoating of ceramic grains in function of submicron intergranular capacitors. The electronic parameters integration in the frame of microelectronics in intergranular phenomena by fractals is opening novel route in miniaturization and integrations. Fractal analysis and calculations provide necessary fractal corrections for sample synthesis. Abstract The BaTiO3 ceramics applications based on electronic properties have very high gradient scientific and industrial-technological interests. Our scientific research has been based on nano BaTiO3 modified with Yttrium based organometallic salt (MOD-Y). The samples have been consolidated at a sintering temperature of 1350 degrees C. Within the study, the new frontiers for different electronic properties between the layers of BaTiO3 grains have been introduced. The research target was grain boundary investigations and the influence on dielectric properties. After scanning electron microscopy and dielectric measurements, it has been established that modified BaTiO3 samples with larger grains showed a better compact state that led to a higher dielectric constant value. DC bias stability was also investigated and showed a connection between the grain size and capacitance stability. Analyses of functions that could approximate experimental curves were successfully employed. Practical application of fractal corrections was performed, based on surface (alpha (s)) and pore size (alpha (p)) corrections, which resulted in obtainment of the relation between the capacitance and Curie temperature. Successful introduction of fractal corrections for capacitance-Curie temperature dependence for a set of experimental data is an important step towards further miniaturization of intergranular capacitors.

AB - Novel highly effective amino-functionalized lignin-based biosorbent in the microsphere geometry (A-LMS) for removal of heavy metal ions, was synthesized via inverse suspension copolymerization of kraft lignin with poly(ethylene imine) grafting-agent and epoxy chloropropane cross-linker. Optimization of A-LMS synthesis, performed with respect to the quantity of sodium alginate emulsifier (1, 5 and 10 wt%), provides highly porous microspheres A-LMS_5, using 5 wt% emulsifier, with 800 ± 80 μm diameter, 7.68 m(2) g(-1) surface area and 7.7 mmol g(-1) of terminal amino groups. Structural and surface characteristics were obtained from Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method, Fourier Transform-Infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy and porosity determination. In a batch test, the influence of pH, A-LMS_5 dose, temperature, contact time on adsorption efficiency of Ni2+, Cd2+, As(V) and Cr(VI) ions were studied. The adsorption is spontaneous and feasible with maximum adsorption capacity of 74.84, 54.20, 53.12 and 49.42 mg g(-1) for Cd2+, Cr(VI), As(V) and Ni2+ ions, respectively, obtained by using Langmuir model. Modeling of kinetic data indicated fast adsorbate removal rate with pore diffusional transport as rate limiting step (pseudo-second order model and Weber-Morris equations), thus further confirming high performances of produced bio-adsorbent for heavy metal ions removal.

AB - Alumina-based compounds have many technological applications and attract great attention even after decades of investigation, due to their good chemical, electrical, and mechanical properties. A mixture of several alumina modifications (alpha-, kappa-, gamma-Al2O3) doped with 1 wt% of Mn2O3 was used for this experiment. The powder was mechanically activated for 60 min in an ethanol medium. After compaction, green bodies were sintered in the temperature range from 1200 to 1400 degrees C. Microstructures of the obtained specimens were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The influence of morphological changes on electrical and mechanical properties was examined in detail. We have developed a test fixture and corresponding software for measurement of the relative dielectric permittivity and the loss tangent of ceramic specimens. This new method over-comes the problems of dimensions and shape of samples, as well as the problem of applying silver paste. The accuracy is around 2% for epsilon'(r) and 0.003 for tan delta. We demonstrate that the mechanical activation (MA) has the dominant influence on lowering the characteristic temperatures and microstructure development, which further leads to increased permittivity and tensile strength.

abstract = "Alumina-based compounds have many technological applications and attract great attention even after decades of investigation, due to their good chemical, electrical, and mechanical properties. We demonstrate that the mechanical activation (MA) has the dominant influence on lowering the characteristic temperatures and microstructure development, which further leads to increased permittivity and tensile strength.",

AB - The world's perennial need for energy and microelectronic miniaturization brings with it a broad set of technological and scientific challenges. Materials characterized by precise microstructural architectures based on fractal analysis and ranging in size down to nano scale represent an important avenue for finding novel solutions. Deep materials structure hierarchies of this type open new possibilities in capacity according to the Heywang model, especially when extended by a fractals approach and intergranular relationships supported and recognized by their fractal nature. These developments are opening new frontiers in microelectronics miniaturization. They build on early fractal applications that were used as tools in miniaturization research and also provided application perspectives for diverse energy technologies. In other words, fractals, as a crucial concept of modem theoretical-experimental physics and materials sciences, are tightly linked to higher integration processes and microelectronics miniaturization. They also hold potential for meeting the energy exploitation challenge. In this research context, for the first time we experimentally and theoretically investigated the electrostatic field between the grains within fractal nature aspects. It is essentially a theoretical experiment based on samples of experimental microstructures imaged with SEM, as previously published in a number of other papers. We now take the research a step further by consolidating the experimental samples with respect to the predicted distribution of grains and pores within the sample mass. We make an original contribution by opening the frame of scale sizes with respect to the technical processes of consolidation. This lets us predict the constitutive elements of the microstructures - approximately equidistant grains and pores. In this paper we define in a practical manner the final target elements for experimental consolidation of real samples. It is the main bridge between a designed microstructure and related characteristics - for example, fractal dimensions and final properties of next-generation fractal microelectronics.

AB - Consolidation parameters have influence and can be used to control structure of BaTiO3 based materials. Microstructure and dielectric properties of Yb2O3 doped BaTiO3-ceramics, sintered from 1320 degrees C to 1380 degrees C have been investigated. The correlation between microstructure, capacity and dielectric properties of doped BaTiO3-ceramics, based on fractal geometry and micro-contact surfaces, has been developed. Using the fractal descriptors of the grains contact surface, the microstructure reconstruction constituents, as grains and pores shapes or intergranular contacts, has been successfully done. Obtained results indicated that fractal analysis contact surfaces descriptors of different shapes are very important for the prognosis of BaTiO3-ceramics microstructure and capacity and dielectric properties. The morphology of ceramics grains pointed out the validity of developing new structure analytical methods, based on different grains' shape geometries. The grains contact structure based on Minkowski hull is presented as a new tool for BaTiO3-ceramics materials structure research. The materials properties prognosis are determined according to the correlations synthesis-structure-property, within Minkowski hull fractal frame.

AB - The new frontiers open different directions within the higher and deeper knowledge structure using unemployed nano sizes domains. The BaTiO3 and other ceramic materials have fractal configuration nature based on three phenomena. First, ceramic grains have fractal shape looking as a contour in cross section or as a surface. Second, there is the so-called "negative space" made of pores and intergranular space. Third, there is fractal Brownian motion (fBm) within the material, during and after sintering, in the form of microparticle flow: ions, atoms, and electrons. Here, we took upon ourselves the task of extending Coble's model, with already generalized Euclidean geometries, by fractal nature correction. These triple factors make the very peculiar microelectronic environment electro-static/dynamic combination. The stress is here set on inter-granular micro-capacity in function of higher energy harvesting and storage. Constructive fractal theory allows identifying micro-capacitors with fractal electrodes. The method is based on the iterative process of interpolation which is compatible with the grain model itself. Inter-granular permeability is taken as the fundamental thermodynamic parameter function of temperature and enthalpy (Gibbs free energy), which are very important for a structure-energy relation.

AB - Highly ordered, anodically grown TiO2 nanotubes on titanium supports were annealed in ammonia atmosphere in order to incorporate nitrogen doping (≤2 at.%) in the titanium oxide lattice. FESEM micrographs revealed nanotubes with an average outer diameter of 101.5 ± 1.5 nm and an average wall thickness of about 13 nm. Anatase crystals were formed inside the tubes after annealing in ammonia atmosphere for 30 min. With further annealing, rutile peaks appeared due to the thermal oxidation of the foil and rise as the duration of heat treatment was increased. The concentration and chemical nature of nitrogen in the nanotube arrays can be correlated to the optical response of dry-pressed heterojunctions of doped TiO2/CH3 NH3PbI3 single crystals. The N-TiO2/perovskite heterojunction with the highest amount of interstitial nitrogen exhibited an improved photocurrent, indicating the importance of the semiconductor doping-based heterojunction optimization strategies to deliver competitive levels of halide perovskite-based optoelectronic devices to be envisioned for urban infrastructures.

AB - Nanocrystalline cobalt magnesium ferrites with varying cobalt and magnesium content (CoxMg1-xFe2O4, 0<x<1) were synthesized using the sol-gel self-combustion method with citric acid as fuel, followed by calcination at 700 °C for 2 hours. Structural characterization was performed using Xray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. It confirmed the formation of agglomerated nanocrystalline ferrites with an inverse cubic spinel structure. The optical band gap energy was determined using UV/Vis spectrophotometry. It reduced with increased Co content. Visible light photocatalytic activity was tested using natural and artificial light sources through a series of experimental degradations of the methylene blue (MB) solution.

AB - In this work, spinel magnesium cobalt ferrites (CoxMg1-xFe2O4, x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9) were synthesized by a sol-gel combustion method. Magnesium nitrate, cobalt nitrate and iron nitrate were used as oxidizers and citric acid was used as a reducing agent. The effects of cobalt ions on structural and morphological properties were investigated and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. A cubic spinel structure formed with a varied distribution of cobalt and magnesium ions on tetrahedral and octahedral sites that depended on their content. All ferrite powders consisted of multigrain agglomerates. Optical properties were investigated by UV- vis spectrophotometry. The photocatalytic activity of as prepared samples was evaluated by measuring the rate of photodegradation reaction of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. After 240 min, compared to other samples, the sample labeled as Co0.1Mg0.9Fe2O4 showed the best rate of photodecomposition of MB resulting in reduction of 90% of its initial concentration.

AB - Zinc ferrite nanocrystalline powder was obtained by solid state synthesis of starting zinc oxide and hematite nanopowders. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of nanocrystalline zinc‐ferrite powder with a mixed spinel structure with small amounts of remaining zinc oxide and hematite as impurities. Thick film paste was formed and screen printed on test interdigitated PdAg electrodes on alumina substrate. Formation of a porous nanocrystalline structure was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Hg porosimetry. Humidity sensing properties of zinc ferrite thick films were investigated by monitoring the change in impedance in the relative humidity interval 30‐90% in the frequency range 42 Hz – 1 MHz at room temperature (25 °C) and 50 °C. At 42 Hz at both analyzed temperatures the impedance reduced ~ 46 times in the humidity range 30‐90%. The dominant influence of grain boundaries was confirmed by analysis of complex impedance with an equivalent circuit.

AB - Titanium dioxide is a photocatalyst, known not only for its ability to oxidize organic contaminants, but also for its antimicrobial properties. In this article, significant enhancement of the antimicrobial activity of TiO2 (up to 32 times) was demonstrated after its activation by ball milling. The antimicrobial activity was analyzed for one fungal and 13 bacterial ATCC strains using the microdilution method and recording the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values. In order to further investigate the correlation between the mechanical activation of TiO2 and its antimicrobial activity, the structure, morphology and phase composition of the material were studied by means of Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra were recorded and the Kubelka-Munk function was applied to convert reflectance into the equivalent band gap energy (Eg) and, consequently, to investigate changes in the Eg value. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze the influence of mechanical activation on the Ti 2p and O 1s spectra. The presented results are expected to enable the development of more sustainable and effective advanced TiO2-based materials with antimicrobial properties that could be used in numerous green technology applications.

AB - Iron oxide, in the form of magnetite (MG)–functionalized porous wollastonite (WL), was used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions (cadmium and nickel) and oxyanions (chromate and phosphate) removal from water. The porous WL was synthesized from calcium carbonate and siloxane by controlled sintering process using low molecular weight submicrosized poly(methyl methacrylate) as a pore-forming agent. The precipitation of MG nanoparticles was carried out directly by a polyol-medium solvothermal method or via branched amino/carboxylic acid cross-linker by solvent/nonsolvent method producing WL/MG and WL-γ-APS/MG adsorbents, respectively. The structure/properties of MG functionalized WL was confirmed by applying FTIR, Raman, XRD, Mössbauer, and SEM analysis. Higher adsorption capacities of 73.126, 66.144, 64.168, and 63.456 mg g−1 for WL-γ-APS/MG in relation to WL/MG of 55.450, 52.019, 48.132, and 47.382 mg g−1 for Cd2+, Ni2+, phosphate, and chromate, respectively, were obtained using nonlinear Langmuir model fitting. Adsorption phenomena were analyzed using monolayer statistical physics model for single adsorption with one energy. Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL-γ-APS/MG, e.g., 1.17–13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL-γ-APS.

AB - The investigation of the influence of acid/base treatment and addition level of non-metallic fractions (NMFs), obtained by processing of printed circuit boards, on the mechanical properties and shrinkage of unsaturated polyester resin (UPR)-based composites was main topic presented in this paper. NMF particles were treated using four different oxidative/etching agents: H2SO4/KMnO4 (NMF1), H2SO4/HNO3 (NMF2), HNO3 (NMF3), and NaOH (NMF4). Treated NMF(1-4) particles were characterized using fourier transform infrared, Boehm titration, optical microscopy and SEM analysis. Tensile strength and micro Vickers hardness of UPR/NMF(1-4) composites were the most improved with addition of 0.5wt% of filler, for 5.9-24.7%, in comparison to composite filled with non-treated NMF particles. Cross-linking density (nu), storage, and loss modulus (G' and G''), damping factor (tan delta) and glass transition temperature (T-g) of the composites were determined from the dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMA) testing. Shrinkage measurements, performed using Aramis 6.2.0, showed significant improvement in shrinkage reducing, for 17.8-30.6%, by introduction the oxidized NMF particles. Qualitative/quantitative evaluation of NMF(1-4) surface functionalities helped in understanding their influences on mechanical, DMA and shrinkage properties change of studied composites. POLYM. AB - Cobalt/magnesium ferrites with various mole percentage ratio of the metals (obtained structures are CoxMg1-xFe2O4 with x being 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, 1.0) were synthesized by sol-gel combustion synthesis using glycine as fuel, following the rules of propellant chemistry. The powders were then sintered at 700 °C for 3 hours. Obtained powders were characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, UV/vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Investigation of the magnetic properties was also conducted by vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The obtained powders were proved to be phase-pure cubic spinels which formed agglomerated micrograins. Series of photocatalytic experiments of methylene blue degradation were done. The influence of different experimental conditions was investigated including variations of: pH values, concentrations of the pollutant, masses of the photocatalyst, different light sources and therefore different light irradiation. Interesting results, including enhancement of the degradation rate with the introduction of cobalt into MgFe2O4 and decrease of the degradation rate with further increase of cobalt content and formation of hard agglomerates, open new possibilities for further investigation of the utilisation of Co/Mg ferrites as photocatalysts.

The influence of different experimental conditions was investigated including variations of: pH values, concentrations of the pollutant, masses of the photocatalyst, different light sources and therefore different light irradiation. Interesting results, including enhancement of the degradation rate with the introduction of cobalt into MgFe2O4 and decrease of the degradation rate with further increase of cobalt content and formation of hard agglomerates, open new possibilities for further investigation of the utilisation of Co/Mg ferrites as photocatalysts.",

AB - The initial-stage of sintering plays a significant role in determining the final microstructure that defines the main characteristics of electroceramics materials such as functional properties. In this article non-isothermal sintering of non-activated and mechanically activated SrTiO3 samples was investigated up to 1300 degrees C. Dilatometric curves indicate that mechanical activation leads to an earlier onset of sintering, suggesting that it should lead to a more homogenous and denser sintered product. Analysis of the initial stage of sintering reveals that the sintering process of all examinated samples consists of two or three overlapping single-step processes, with a change in the dominant mass transport mechanism. The values of apparent activation energy of the considered single-step process exhibit a significant decrease with an increase in mechanical activation time. The values of the density of samples after isothermal sintering indicate that the final stage of sintering has not been reached by 1300 degrees C.

AB - Sintering of pure cordierite 2MgO:2Al(2)O(3):5SiO(2), and cordierite with the addition of 5 mass % TeO2 was studied. Green bodies were prepared from powder mixtures mechanically activated in a high-energy planetary mill, shaped by uniaxial (20 MPa) and cold isostatic pressing (1000 MPa). The pressure-less sintering of these specimens was performed at 1350 degrees C for 1 h. High relative density over 95% of the theoretical value was obtained through solid-state reaction and pressure-less sintering of powder activated for 40 min, and for the first time reported in the literature. Phase composition and microstructures of sintered samples were determined by XRD and SEM, coupled with EDS mapping. The real part of the complex relative permittivity of the samples was measured at 200 MHz. The loss tangent of all samples was below the resolution of the measurement setup. A strong correlation between the relative permittivity and the density agrees with previously published data.

AB - Magnesium aluminate, MgAl2O4 and other alumina-based spinels are ceramics with high hardness, high melting point and mechanical strenght. Spinels can also be used as dielectrics in microwave applications. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of mechanical activation and sintering temperatures on physico-chemical properties of spinel. MgAl2O4 was produced by solid state reaction between MgO and alpha-Al2O3. The starting powders were mixed by ball milling to homogenize without significant particle size reduction. Mechanical activation of mixed powders was performed in a high-energy planetary ball mill in air for 1 h. Powders were compacted at 300 MPa. Heat treatments were performed in air, at temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1600 degrees C with 2 h dwell time, to determine the amount of spinel formation as a function of temperature. Phase composition and microstructure of initial powders and heated samples were determined by means of X-ray diffraction, particle size analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The influences of milling and consolidation parameters were studied by electrical measurements and mechanical characterization. The main conclusion of this study was that mechanical activation for 60 min initiated a mechano-chemical reaction, resulted in spinel formation at much lower temperatures than within non-activated powders, and indicated that final sintering stage started at much lower temperatures for activated powders. Changes in microstructure parameters, as a consequence of mechanical treatment and subsequent heating of investigated powder mixtures, strongly affect electrical and mechanical properties of the final ceramics.

AB - Multiferroic materials attracted a lot of attention in recent years because of their significant scientific interest and technological applications. The multiferroic core/shell powders have a better connectivity between the phases, resulting in superior dielectric and magneto electric properties. In this study, the influence of preparation condition on structure and properties of BaTiO3/α-Fe2O3 core/shell composite materials was examined. The five samples were obtained by varying synthesis conditions, such as synthesized method (co-precipitation and sonochemical method) and pH values of solution. XRD and Raman spectroscopy analyses were performed in order to determine phase composition and structural changes within samples. Morphology modifications were examined by SEM and EDS analyses. Finally, effect of structural and microstructural changes on magnetic and electrical properties was detected and explained.
