AB - In this study, the structure, morphology and composition of the synthesized magnetite/3D-printed wollastonite (3D_W/M) composite were characterized, and its adsorption performance with respect to As(V) and Cr(VI) were studied. Magnetite (MG) modified 3D printed wollastonite was obtained by two step procedure: modification of 3D_W with 3-aminoproylsilane (APTES) followed by controlled magnetite (MG) deposition to obtain 3D_W/M adsorbent. The structure/properties of 3D_W/M were confirmed by applying FTIR, XRD, TGD/DTA, and SEM analysis. The adsorption properties of hybrid adsorbents were carried out for As(V) and Cr(VI) removal - one relative to the initial pH value, the adsorbent mass, the temperature, and the adsorption time. Time-dependent adsorption study was best described by pseudo-second order equation, while Weber Morris analysis showed that intraparticle diffusion controled diffusional transport. Similar activation energy, 17.44 and 14.49 kJ•mol-1 for adsorption As(V) and Cr(VI) on 3D_W/M, respectively, indicated main contribution of physical adsorption. Determination of adsorption parameters was performed by applying different adsorption isotherm models, and the best fit was obtained using Freundlich model. The adsorption capacity of 24.16 and 29.6 mg g-1 for As(V) and Cr(VI) at 2oC, Co = 5.5 and 5.3 mg L-1, respectively, were obtained. Thermodynamic study indicated favourable process at a higher temperature. Preliminary fixed-bed column study and results fitting with Bohart-Adams, Yoon-Nelson, Thomas, and Modified dose-response model showed good agreement with results from the batch study.

AB - Alumina-based compounds have many technological applications and attract great attention even after decades of investigation, due to their good chemical, electrical, and mechanical properties. A mixture of several alumina modifications (alpha-, kappa-, gamma-Al2O3) doped with 1 wt% of Mn2O3 was used for this experiment. The powder was mechanically activated for 60 min in an ethanol medium. After compaction, green bodies were sintered in the temperature range from 1200 to 1400 degrees C. Microstructures of the obtained specimens were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The influence of morphological changes on electrical and mechanical properties was examined in detail. We have developed a test fixture and corresponding software for measurement of the relative dielectric permittivity and the loss tangent of ceramic specimens. This new method over-comes the problems of dimensions and shape of samples, as well as the problem of applying silver paste. The accuracy is around 2% for epsilon'(r) and 0.003 for tan delta. We demonstrate that the mechanical activation (MA) has the dominant influence on lowering the characteristic temperatures and microstructure development, which further leads to increased permittivity and tensile strength.

AB - Iron oxide, in the form of magnetite (MG)–functionalized porous wollastonite (WL), was used as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions (cadmium and nickel) and oxyanions (chromate and phosphate) removal from water. The porous WL was synthesized from calcium carbonate and siloxane by controlled sintering process using low molecular weight submicrosized poly(methyl methacrylate) as a pore-forming agent. The precipitation of MG nanoparticles was carried out directly by a polyol-medium solvothermal method or via branched amino/carboxylic acid cross-linker by solvent/nonsolvent method producing WL/MG and WL-γ-APS/MG adsorbents, respectively. The structure/properties of MG functionalized WL was confirmed by applying FTIR, Raman, XRD, Mössbauer, and SEM analysis. Higher adsorption capacities of 73.126, 66.144, 64.168, and 63.456 mg g−1 for WL-γ-APS/MG in relation to WL/MG of 55.450, 52.019, 48.132, and 47.382 mg g−1 for Cd2+, Ni2+, phosphate, and chromate, respectively, were obtained using nonlinear Langmuir model fitting. Adsorption phenomena were analyzed using monolayer statistical physics model for single adsorption with one energy. Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL-γ-APS/MG, e.g., 1.17–13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL-γ-APS.

Kinetic study showed exceptionally higher pseudo-second-order rate constants for WL-γ-APS/MG, e.g., 1.17–13.4 times, with respect to WL/MG indicating importance of both WL surface modification and controllable precipitation of MG on WL-γ-APS.",

AB - Sintering of pure cordierite 2MgO:2Al(2)O(3):5SiO(2), and cordierite with the addition of 5 mass % TeO2 was studied. Green bodies were prepared from powder mixtures mechanically activated in a high-energy planetary mill, shaped by uniaxial (20 MPa) and cold isostatic pressing (1000 MPa). The pressure-less sintering of these specimens was performed at 1350 degrees C for 1 h. High relative density over 95% of the theoretical value was obtained through solid-state reaction and pressure-less sintering of powder activated for 40 min, and for the first time reported in the literature. Phase composition and microstructures of sintered samples were determined by XRD and SEM, coupled with EDS mapping. The real part of the complex relative permittivity of the samples was measured at 200 MHz. The loss tangent of all samples was below the resolution of the measurement setup. A strong correlation between the relative permittivity and the density agrees with previously published data.

AB - Magnesium aluminate, MgAl2O4 and other alumina-based spinels are ceramics with high hardness, high melting point and mechanical strenght. Spinels can also be used as dielectrics in microwave applications. The goal of this study was to examine the effects of mechanical activation and sintering temperatures on physico-chemical properties of spinel. MgAl2O4 was produced by solid state reaction between MgO and alpha-Al2O3. The starting powders were mixed by ball milling to homogenize without significant particle size reduction. Mechanical activation of mixed powders was performed in a high-energy planetary ball mill in air for 1 h. Powders were compacted at 300 MPa. Heat treatments were performed in air, at temperatures ranging from 1200 to 1600 degrees C with 2 h dwell time, to determine the amount of spinel formation as a function of temperature. Phase composition and microstructure of initial powders and heated samples were determined by means of X-ray diffraction, particle size analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The influences of milling and consolidation parameters were studied by electrical measurements and mechanical characterization. The main conclusion of this study was that mechanical activation for 60 min initiated a mechano-chemical reaction, resulted in spinel formation at much lower temperatures than within non-activated powders, and indicated that final sintering stage started at much lower temperatures for activated powders. Changes in microstructure parameters, as a consequence of mechanical treatment and subsequent heating of investigated powder mixtures, strongly affect electrical and mechanical properties of the final ceramics.

AB - Alumina-based compounds have many technological applications and attract great attention even after decades of investigation, due to their good chemical, electrical, and mechanical properties. A mixture of several alumina modifications (α-, κ-, γ-Al2O3) doped with 1 wt% of Mn2O3 was used for this experiment. The powder was mechanically activated for 60 min in an ethanol medium. After compaction, green bodies were sintered in the temperature range from 1200 to 1400 °C. This new method overcomes the problems of dimensions and shape of samples, as well as the problem of applying silver paste. The accuracy is around 2% for ε'r and 0.003 for tanδ. We demonstrate that the mechanical activation (MA) has the dominant influence on lowering the characteristic temperatures and microstructure development, which further leads to increased permittivity and tensile strength.

AB - Single phase MgAl2O4 was made from a one-to-one molar ratio of MgO and Al2O3 powders mixed using ball-milling. Mixtures of MgO and Al2O3 were subsequently treated in planetary ball mill for 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes in air. The aim of this study was to examine phase composition, microstructure, and densification behavior of sintered specimens. After sintering in dilatometer at 1500 degrees C, the powder was converted to single phase MgAl2O4. The results show that mechanical activation improved the densification behavior of MgAl2O4 sintered specimens, and it reduced the onset temperature for sintering by approx. 100 degrees C. Based on dilatometer data, powders were subsequently densified at 1450 degrees C by hot pressing. Almost all specimens exhibited full density, while sample activated for 30 minutes showed the fastest densification rate.

AB - Corundum (alpha-alumina) is a suiTab. material for usage in various industry fields owing to its chemical stability, electrical and mechanical features. It is known that properties of ceramics could be modified by addition of different oxides, as well as by changing the consolidation parameters. In this respect, alumina was doped with 1 wt.% of Cr2O3, Mn2O3 and NiO, followed by 1 hour of mechanical activation in a high-energy planetary ball mill. A sensitive dilatometer was used for sintering of powder mixtures up to 1400 degrees C and recording the obtained dilatation. The final density varied between cca. 1.9 and 3.3 g/cm(3). Microstructural changes were detected by SEM measurements. Changes in electrical permittivity and loss tangent were associated with the preparation conditions (types of additives, duration of mechanical activation). For a given mixture, the sintering increases the relative permittivity and decreases losses, exhibiting the optimal values of 8.32 and 0.027, respectively, for the sample activated 60 minutes and sintered, with the addition of MnO2. Mechanical measurements indicate significant differences in strength with the addition of different transition metal oxides. Samples with Mn and Ni, activated and sintered, with strength of 121 and 86 MPa, respectively, have a significantly higher tensile strength than the other tested samples, due to their more compact microstructures.

AB - In the present study the effect of preparation conditions on microstructure and electrical properties of MgTiO3 ceramics was investigated. Mixture of MgO and TiO2 powders was subjected to mechanical activation for different time periods. Two types of sintering (two-step and HIP sintering) were performed on green bodies prepared by cold isostatic pressing. AC impedance spectroscopy in the low-frequency range (from 20 Hz to 1 MHz), at room and elevated temperatures, were performed in order to separate contribution of grains and grain boundaries to capacitance, resistance and conductivity of magnesium titanate ceramics. The special attention was directed to explanation of the influence of mechanical activation on electrical and morphological changes in sintered samples. The significant decrease of partial oxygen pressure in HP sintering atmosphere caused the change from insulating behavior of MgTiO3 samples after two-step sintering to semiconducting one.

AB - The structural characteristics of polymer nanocomposites with functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix have been studied in relation to nanofiller loading and surface functionality. Different functional groups have been covalently attached on the MWCNTs sidewalls in order to induce interfacial interactions at nanofiller/polymer interface, which resulted in an improved nanomechanical features. Structural properties of nanocomposites, studied with XRD and Raman analysis, indicated the most pronounced decrease in a degree of amorphousness for samples containing 0.5 and 1 wt% of MWCNTs functionalized with dapsone (dapson-MWCNT) and diethyl malonate (dem-MWCNT). SEM and TEM micrographs confirmed improved dispersibility of the MWCNTs modified with aromatic structure of dapsone inside PMMA matrix. A significant increase in a glass transition temperature of over 60 degrees C has been found for the 1 wt% dapson-MWCNT nanocomposite. Additional modification of dapson-MWCNT by further increasing aromaticity and voluminosity of attached moiety (fid-MWCNT), showed 30 degrees C increases in a glass transition temperature at 4 wt% of nanofiller loading, which is similar to shift of 37 degrees C with loading of MWCNTs modified with ester terminal group. A maximum increase of 56% of reduced modulus and 86% of hardness was obtained for 1 wt% loading of dapson-MWCNT nanofiller.

AB - Crystal structure and morphology of mechanically activated nanocrystalline Fe/BaTiO3 was investigated using a combination of spectroscopic and microscopic methods. These show that mechanical activation led to the creation of new surfaces and the comminution of the initial powder particles. Prolonged milling resulted in formation of larger agglomerates of BaTiO3 and bimodal particle size distribution, where BaTiO3 particles were significantly larger than those of iron-containing phases. Milling times of 210 min and above lead to a significant decrease in temperature of the oxidation of iron in the sample, indicating abrupt change in reactivity. Raman spectroscopy analysis has revealed that activation had a pronounced influence on Fe/BaTiO3 lattice, thereby affecting both the stability of the crystal structure and the phase transition phenomena.

AB - Commercially available ZnO powder was mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill. In order to investigate the specific surface area, pore volume and microstructure of non-activated and mechanically activated ZnO powders the authors performed N2 physisorption, SEM and TEM. Crystallite size and lattice microstrain were analyzed by X-ray diffraction method. XRD patterns indicate that peak intensities are getting lower and expend with activation time. The reduction in crystallite size and increasing of lattice microstrain with prolonged milling time were determined applying the Rietveld's method. The difference between non-activated and the activated powder has been also observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XPS is used for investigating the chemical bonding of ZnO powder by analyzing the energy of photoelectrons. The lattice vibration spectra were obtained using Raman spectroscopy. In Raman spectra some changes along with atypical resonant scattering were noticed, which were caused by mechanical activation.

AB - Ferroelectric barium strontium titanate (Ba0.77Sr0.23TiO3), BST, was prepared by solid-state reactions using as the starting compounds powder of barium carbonate (BaCO3), strontium carbonate (SrCO3) and titanium dioxide (TiO2–anatase). Non-activated mixtures and mixtures mechanically activated in a high-energy planetary ball mill (0, 5, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 120 min) were sintered at 1100, 1200, 1300 and 1400 °C for 2 h in air atmosphere. Defects and the effect of the beginning of the sintering process on the microstructure were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrical measurements (loss tangent and resistivity as the function of frequency XC=f(log ν)) were performed for ceramics sintered at 1400 °C for 2 h. It has been found that mechanical activation can reduce the sintering temperature by around 100 °C, which leads to significant energy savings. Furthermore, activated for 80 min and sintered at 1400 °C for 2 h exhibit the largest density values and have about 36% lower dielectric loss at a frequency of 1 kHz and about 57% at a frequency of 10 kHz than the samples obtained from the initial non-activated powder sintered under the same conditions.

AB - Cordierite (MAS) is difficult to sinter because of the very narrow sintering temperature range (1300-1400°C). Because a low temperature process is desirable, it is necessary to find functional ads which can allow easier sintering process at lower temperature. The influence of MoO3 on the preparation process of cordierite ceramics was investigated. 2MgO-2Al2O3-5SiO2 was researched by sintering followed binary systems: MgO/MoO3, Al2O3/MoO3 and SiO2/MoO3 (all sintered at 850°C and 1100°C, sintering time 2h). Composition of these systems was 80 mass% of oxide and 20 mass% MoO3. The effects of sintering, the composition and morphology were followed by X-ray diffraction and SEM microscopy. It has been found that MoO3, beside liquid phase, forms intermediary unstable compounds with MgO and Al2O3, which is the significance information for further research. MAS ceramics were sintered with 20 mass% MoO3 at 1100°C, 1200°C and 1300°C, during 2h.

AB - In this study, we have performed functionalization of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) via Bingel reaction and investigated influence on the addition of covalently functionalized GPNs on the structural changes of the poly(methyl methacrylate). Preparation of poly(methyl methacrylate) nanocomposites with functionalized GNPs has been accomplished by drop casting method of dissolved PMMA mixed with modified graphene nanoplatelets dispersed in a N-methyl-1-pyrrolidone. Functionalizaton of graphene has been achieved under the conditions of Bingel reaction, which implies introduction of diethyl malonate on the graphene surfaces through the cyclopropane ring formation. Introduction of the cyclopropane ring on to the surface of graphene does not significantly affect the initial structural properties of graphene nanoplatelets, allowing better dispersible properties due to interaction of covalently attached diethyl malonate groups with the polymer chains. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and elemental analysis confirmed the effectiveness of the addition of diethyl malonate via Bingel reaction on the surface of GNPs. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been used to provide information on the morphology of functionalized GNPs. Prepared nanocomposites have been characterized by Raman and FTIR spectroscopy. The changes regarding glass transition temperature have been monitored with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

AB - In this paper, the authors investigated the influence of mechanicall activation of ZnO powder on crystal and micro structure. Because of its structure, ZnO could be used like filler in polymer ceramics nanocompozites. Performances of these material depend on filler morphology, surfaces, texture and size particle. According to this, ZnO powder was activated in a planetary ball mill for 2, 5, 10 and 30 minutes. Changes in crystal and micro structure were observed by SEM, XRD, Raman spectroscopy and UV-Vis Reflection. SEM micrographs show increase of agglomerates size with prolonged milling time. XRD patterns indicate that the peak intensities getting lower and expand with activation time. UV-Vis reflection shows that there is a clear difference in the spectra with increasing activation time. The results we got by the investigation of dinamical structure by Raman spectroscopy are in corelation with the other results of structures analysis. Results presented here enable further optimisation of the polymer nanocompozite based on ZnO and PVDF making process.

abstract = "In this paper, the authors investigated the influence of mechanicall activation of ZnO powder on crystal and micro structure. Results presented here enable further optimisation of the polymer nanocompozite based on ZnO and PVDF making process.",

AB - TiO2-based materials are widely used in production of ceramic capacitors and semiconductors. The conventional method of ceramics synthesis relies on the solid-state reaction between TiO2 and other compounds (BaCO3, BaO, ZnO, MgO and SrCO3) at high temperatures. During this reaction control of final stoichiometry and powder characteristics are difficult to maintain, because of the lack of the consistency in initial raw material's mixture and the existence of local inhomogeneities in reaction product which occur as a result of incomplete mixing and incomplete reaction of the constituents. In the most cases the sintering kinetics of these ceramics are determined by several parameters, including pressed powder density, material's particle size, sintering temperature, atmosphere etc. As a result, during thermal treatment mass transport by plastic flow, bulk diffusion, surface and volume diffusion, grain boundary diffusion, or a combination of these processes may occur. In order to produce nanocrystalline powders and improve the sintering kinetics, high energy mechanical activation can be employed among other methods. DTA analyses indicated that the position of DTA exothermic peak assigned to the process of ceramics formation was shifted toward lower temperatures in activated samples. The distinction in that peak magnitude due to activation process was observed as well. These results pointed out an increase of the solid state reaction rate, due to activation process. It was concluded that mechanical activation provoked the acceleration of mass transport and enhanced the nucleation probability of a new phase, which caused the decrease of synthesis reaction temperature.

AB - In this article the influence of mechanical activation on sintering process of bariumstrontium-titanate ceramics has been investigated. Both non-activated and mixtures treated in a planetary ball mill for 5, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 120 minutes were sintered at 1100-1400°C for 2 hours in presence of air atmosphere. The influence of mechanical activation on phase composition and crystal structure has been analyzed by XRD, while the effect of activation and sintering process on microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. It has been established that temperature of 1100°C was too low to induce final sintering stage for this system. Electrical measurements have been conducted for the densest ceramics sintered at 1400°C for 2 hours.

AB - In this article the influence of mechanical activation on sintering process of magnesium-titanate and barium-zinc-titanate ceramics has been investigated. Both non-activated and mixtures treated in planetary ball mill for 80 minutes were sintered at 1100 degrees C and 1300 degrees C. The influence of mechanical activation on phase composition and crystal structure has been analyzed by XRD, while the effect of activation and sintering process on microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. It has been established that temperature of 1100 degrees C was to low to induce final sintering stage for both systems. Moreover, we concluded that barium-zinc-titanate ceramics exhibited better sinterability than magnesium-titanate ceramics.
