AB - The Republic of Serbia has more than 2.2 millions of buildings built before 2011. when the
Rulebook on energy efficiency of buildings was adopted. Which further implies that more than 289
millions of square meters of dwellings in Serbia have lower thermal envelop properties than it is
recommended and thus much higher energy consumption for heating than it is the case in new
buildings. This makes an opportunity for deep building renovation of Serbian building stock and
potential energy savings. In this manner, it is possible to save up to 6.7610^9 kWh/a of energy for
heating yearly just by the renovation of the existing building stock built in a period from 1971-1980.
If this calculation is extended to all Serbian dwellings, it is possible to save up to 2.68*10^10 kWh/a
of final energy for heating yearly. Similarly, CO2 emission reduction for the existing buildings can be accomplished up to 40% just by the refurbishment of the building envelope.

AB - The Republic of Serbia has a significant potential for the electricity production from solar energy, namely the
floating photovoltaic (PV) systems, which are not exploited enough. Although there is a large interest in floating
photovoltaic systems (FPVS) worldwide, studies related to the assessment of FPVS potential in this part of Europe
have not been performed yet. This paper investigates, for the first time, the possibility of implementation of the
FPVS on the six largest Serbian lakes and demonstrates the impact of geographical location on the energy output
of the FPVS for the selected locations. The possibility of implementation is studied by simulating the energy
output of FPVS using "PVGIS" tool. Energy production from the proposed FPVS, for selected locations, is discussed
on a monthly and yearly basis. Installment of the FPVS on these water bodies can produce up to 8959 kWh
of energy, while saves 164⋅10^6 m3/year of water from evaporation at the same time. In addition, the annual
reduction of carbon dioxide emissions was analyzed and found to be up to 6.34 tons per year, which further
implies with carbon credit potential of up to 9741 € in 20 years period. Drawn conclusions provides better
understanding of FPVS and their applicability in the Republic of Serbia to ensure a sustainable, ecological
friendly, secure and reliable supply of green energy, and further the used approach can be easily applied in other
countries with similar geographical characteristics.

AB - Compared to methodology provided by standards concerning thermal comfort, by using
models based on various approximation methods or artificial intelligence, it may be possible
to ensure more time efficient and accurate calculation of thermal comfort indices. The aim of
this study is to compare Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) computation model established by using
multiple linear regression and trained artificial neural network, from the standpoint of
accuracy. Both models are established on the basis of the same dataset which consists of 400
combinations of 4 thermal comfort parameters. These parameters are the air temperature,
mean radiant temperature, relative humidity and clothing resistance, while activity level and
air velocity are adopted as 1.1 met (office typing activity) and 0.05 m/s, respectively, and are
considered constant values for selected type of indoor environment. Clothing resistance is
adopted as 0.5 clo for summer period and 1.0 clo for winter period, while the air temperature,
mean radiant temperature and relative humidity are values which are randomly generated
within appropriately selected ranges. Taking into account that coefficients of determination
which correspond to it are over 95%, resulting first degree polynomial relation obtained by
using multiple linear regression can be considered a satisfactory approximation of PMV
model as it is given in ASHRAE Standard 55-2020. Furthermore, there are certain input value
combinations for which PMV values obtained by using this model coincide with the ones
calculated by using algorithm which is provided by standard. However, results obtained by
using trained neural network with one hidden layer coincide with PMV values calculated on
the basis of ASHRAE Standard 55-2020 for each input value combination. Therefore, from
the standpoint of accuracy, it is concluded that neural network provides significantly better
approximation of PMV model.

AB - The intense development and urbanization of the cities last decades significantly influenced on increase of pollution and formation of urban heat islands. Further, the rapid urbanization impacted on decrease of green areas in cities. Looking at the data of development for Belgrade, Serbia, in a period from 2016 to 2020, the square meters of built space increased 350%. Furthermore, Serbia has 2.910^8 square meters of dwellings build before 2011, which means that the thermal properties of the buildings’ envelope were much lower than it is now recommended. Moreover, with a intense urbanization, the number of bee population significantly decreased. All these issues represent a high potential for the refurbishment of buildings using green systems, either the green roofs or together green roofs and green facades. Different types of green roofs and facades are considered to be a good habitats for bees in urban areas, and a lot of cities worldwide recognized this potential. Serbia has a great potential for developing the green roofs at the top of the existing buildings, which need refurbishment, since the majority of these buildings has an optimal height for the bees habitat, up to eight floors. This concept is beneficial in many directions: contribution to energy efficiency and better indoor environmental quality, decrease of urban heat islands, decrease of urban pollution, increase of number of green areas in cities and in the same time saving of bee population in urban areas.

AB - The majority of studies dealing with the correlation between human body exergy consumption and thermal comfort use adopted, constant values of metabolic rate for appropriate activity level. Taking into account correlations between metabolic rate and the occupant’s exhaled CO2 volumetric flow rate, this study proposes a novel method for the calculation of metabolic rate using measured CO2 concentration in the indoor air. Using measured values of the air and radiant temperature, relative humidity and air velocity, and calculated values of metabolic rate, the human body exergy consumption rate and corresponding Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) are calculated. Moreover, a novel polynomial relation between them is proposed. Results show that metabolic rate values vary in the range of 0.97 to 1.54 met which leads to significantly wider range of PMV and human body exergy consumption rate comparing to the assumed value of 1.2 met for sedentary school activity. According to the obtained relation, the minimal value of the human body exergy consumption rate occurs for PMV = − 0.02. Results of this study imply that treating CO2 concentration as variable does have an impact on the thermal comfort assessment, providing enhanced correlations between thermal comfort and human body exergy consumption rate.

However, due to the simplicity of the calculations and numerous assumptions, there is a deviation from the actual behavior of the system. In this paper, a single-stage, reversible CO2 system, which can operate in both air-conditioning and heating mode, with and without an internal heat exchanger (IHX), was presented. In the heating mode, the deviation of the theoretical cycle from the actual cycle of the heat pump was analyzed, under various operating conditions. Actual cycles were formed based on the experimental investigation of this system. The changes of various parameters and deviations that are made due to a simpler calculation are presented.

AB - The use of an internal heat exchanger (IHX) as a cycle improvement measure is very common with CO2 systems. However, a simple thermodynamic analysis is not able to fully indicate the advantages of IHX in a single-stage system. For this reason, in this paper, the effect of the internal heat exchanger on the reversible CO2 system, which can work in both air-conditioning and heating mode, was experimentally investigated. Experiments were performed under various conditions for both operating modes, with and without an internal heat exchanger. The results of the experiments showed that in the heating mode (heat pump) the coefficient of performance (COP) can be increased up to 10,5% by introducing the internal heat exchanger, while in the air-conditioning mode, the COP can be increased up to 13,8%. Also, it has been shown that this improvement provides safer system operation and less frost formation on the evaporator.

AB - This paper analyzes the operational characteristics of the Tuzla brewery refrigeration system after the installation of the Danfoss IPS8 air purging device. In order for an analysis such as this to be conducted correctly, one must understand where in the brewing industry the need for refrigeration occurs, how non-condensable gases are accumulated inside of the refrigeration system, and how the separation of non-condensable gases is done. After the theoretical part of the analysis, in which the thermodynamic basics of the ammonia refrigeration cycle is explained, an analysis of annual savings was conducted. The results of the analysis are presented in the form of annual savings in electricity consumption, for different operating conditions of the specific refrigeration system with and without a purger. At the end of this analysis, the amount of released non-condensable gases were also calculated.

AB - The largest amount of energy in Serbia households is spent on heating needs. Therefore, the main idea of this paper is to compare the heating bills for a residential building in Belgrade using various energy sources. Electric boiler, gas-fired condensing boiler, and air-to-water heat pump are analyzed. For calculating expenses, the current electricity and gas rates in Serbia have been used. For selected cases, both primary energy use and CO2 emission have been compared.

AB - The paper analyzed three generations of R744 systems: the basic booster system, the booster system with parallel compression, and the multi ejector system. The aim was to compare these systems from the point of view of efficiency and electricity consumption. The analysis is based on the model with two temperature levels of evaporators –30 °C and –10 °C, and with a total cooling capacity of 250 kW and 150 kW, respectively. The analysis was carried out for the climatic conditions of the city of Belgrade in the summer period when the greatest differences in operation are expected. The results showed that the next system generations achieve savings in electricity consumption for the considered period.

AB - The use of carbon dioxide (CO2) refrigeration systems is increasingly present in modern supermarkets. Compared to conventional systems with freons, these systems use a natural and environmentally friendly refrigerant, but their energy efficiency is lower. However, with the advent of new technologies and better understanding of carbon dioxide, space has been created for system improvement and the introduction of new technical solutions. Also, one of the useful methods for improving the operation of the transcritical CO2 system is the determination of the optimum high side pressure in the gas cooler.
In this paper, two transcritical CO2 systems (1st generation) are presented, which represent a potential technical solution for the system that will be carried out in the Laboratory for Thermal Science at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Belgrade. In order to maintain the maximum coefficient of performance (COP) with optimum high side pressure, a thermodynamic analysis was carried out for one selected system. In addition to the influence of the ambient air temperature, the possible affecting parameters on COP and optimum high side pressure was also considered. Finally, a proper control equation is given.

comfort models based on exergy approach and the impact of
models’ input parameters to the calculation results. The aim of
this paper is to present the results of the application of five
different thermal comfort models based on the exergy analysis,
to compare them, and to determine if they coincide with the
results obtained by using Fanger’s model. While models that
are the most commonly used to evaluate and predict thermal
comfort conditions are based on the first law of thermodynamics,
a handful of authors used both the first and the second law
of thermodynamics in order to develop new thermal comfort
models. Even though the optimal comfort conditions according
to these models may not differ by large margin from the optimal
thermal comfort conditions according to Fanger’s model, it is
concluded that justification of using models based on the exergy
analysis to evaluate thermal comfort is very dependent on the
input parameters, which should all be taken into consideration
separately.

AB - The population in Serbia predominantly lives and works in traditional buildings from the middle of the last century. This paper investigates the indoor thermal environments in two business offices in the same building, located in Belgrade, Serbia. They are approximately the same size, on the same floor, but on the opposite sides of the building. In Office 1, the exposure to direct sunlight is for about one hour in the morning in winter period, due to the NE orientation. Office 2 is SW oriented and exposed to sunlight starting from 12.30h until the sunset. The study was carried out in a traditional office building from the middle of the last century, with typical walls without insulation. Physical parameters such as air temperature, measured by K-type sensors (TK1 and TK2), relative air speed, and relative humidity are the main factors that influence the indoor thermal environment. Results regarding the thermal comfort indices, PMV and PPD, were obtained by measurements, which were performed one time per day, during the working hours, at noon, in order to get the relevant conclusions with respect to the orientation and sunlight exposure of the offices. Other physical parameters mentioned above were measured three times per day, at two heights. In this work, the results of measurements of PMV and PPD for the whole heating season are presented.

AB - Residential sector is considered one of the largest consumers of primary energy in the world. The main part of total energy consumption in buildings refers to heating. The study presents a thermodynamic sustainability assessment of different energy sources for residential building heating. The paper presents universal methodology, which can be applied to energy and exergy analysis for all types of buildings. Various options of energy sources were studied, namely: coal, natural gas, electricity, district heating, air-water heat pump, biomass and district heating with a cogeneration. Energy and exergy analyses were conducted and appropriate efficiencies were determined. The calculation of an environmental impact factor and exergetic sustainability index for all types of considered energy sources was performed. The results showed that exergy efficiency was very low in all analyzed cases except for biomass, which leads to poor thermodynamic compatibility of energy quality from the supplied side and the energy used for building heating. It was shown that the highest exergy efficiency was in the case of biomass utilization (about 29%), due to the energy used from renewable energy sources. The minimum environmental impact factor (2.48) and maximum exergetic sustainability index (0.403) were found for the case of biomass utilization.

abstract = "Residential sector is considered one of the largest consumers of primary energy in the world. AB - This paper presents a new optimisation method for PID controller cascaded with a lead-lag compensator (PIDC). Parameters of the controller are obtained by solving the constrained optimisation problem. We propose two variants of the optimality criterion. The first one is defined through the max-min optimisation problem wherein objective function is the amplitude frequency response of the PIDC controller. The second one is based on an effective approximation of the minimum value of the amplitude frequency response of the PIDC controller. Consequently, we obtain a computationally less expensive problem. Both variants of optimality criterion result in efficient load disturbance and noise rejection, while robustness is ensured by constraining the value of the maximum sensitivity Ms. Good reference shaping is supported with proper constraints based on the Amplitude Optimum (AO) principle. Numerous batches of processes typically encountered in the industry are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

AB - Recently, calculus of general order alpha is an element of R has attracted attention in scientific literature, where fractional operators are often used for control issues and the modeling of the dynamics of complex systems. In this work, some attention will be devoted to the problem of viscous friction in robotic joints. The calculus of general order and the calculus of variations are utilized for the modeling of viscous friction which is extended to the fractional derivative of the angular displacement. In addition, to solve the output tracking problem of a robotic manipulator with three DOFs with revolute joints in the presence of model uncertainties, robust advanced iterative learning control (AILC) is introduced. First, a feedback linearization procedure of a nonlinear robotic system is applied. Then, the proposed intelligent feedforward-feedback AILC algorithm is introduced. The convergence of the proposed AILC scheme is established in the time domain in detail. Finally, simulations on the given robotic arm system confirm the effectiveness of the robust AILC method.

AB - On the hitherto installed chillers/rooftop units/dry coolers and air coolers, a significant improvement in cooling was noticed in the summer mode when the pipe bundle is sprayed with water. Tests have been performed on systems that produce water mist (micron-sized water droplets), which are formed by spraying water under high pressure through the nozzles/nozzle openings. When a drop of micron-sized water comes in contact with warm air, it evaporates very quickly, absorbing a certain amount of heat, which results in cooling the air. This improves the operation of the cooler in critical periods when the ambient air temperature is very high. The aim of the test is to determine the improvement of the cooler operation under operating conditions with the application of the described system in relation to the operating mode without water spraying (dry operating mode).

AB - This paper deals with the procedure for measuring the relevant parameters of plate-finned tube heat exchangers operating as an air heaters. Besides the description of the experimental installation, the most important geometric characteristics of these appliances are given. In order to determine the relevant parameters for dry and wet regimes (for cases with and without spray cooling), experimental measurements of the heat and hydraulic performance of the heat exchangers were made. Water flowed through the pipes as a warmer fluid. During the experiments, the flow rates and temperatures of the working fluids were varied within the limits defined by the operating parameters of the installation itself, sufficient to allow the obtained results to be generalized. The experimental data were processed by appropriate statistical methods; the aim was to determine equations suitable for engineering practice. The coefficients of the air-side heat and mass transfer and friction factor are defined on the complex geometry of this type of heat exchangers under realistic operating conditions, as a function of the relevant similarity criteria.

AB - The paper analyzes the electric energy consumption of three different refrigeration installations: cascade refrigeration system with R134a in the high-temperature circuit and CO2 in the low-temperature circuit, single-stage refrigeration system operating with R404A, and two-stage transcritical CO2 system. The indirect impact of the refrigeration system on global warming through electric energy consumption was examined.
Thermodynamic cycles of these installations have been described and models have been developed to analyze the electric energy consumption required to drive the compressor as the largest consumer, for the cooling capacity of the evaporator 5,7 kW at evaporation temperature -30 °C for meteorological 2017, in the city of Belgrade. As a basis for comparative analysis, the existing cascade refrigeration system, which is located in the Laboratory for Thermal Science at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Belgrade, was selected.

AB - This paper describes some pedagogical approaches of using electrical motors within engineering study programs. We are discussing the education of students who are without any electrical engineering background, and who only aim to use motors within different engineering applications like robots, hydro-mechanical or control engineering application. Laboratory support is typically expensive, especially for countries like Serbia, but laboratories are necessary for engineering education. The paper promotes problem-based learning approach which is based on affordable or as cheap as possible laboratory experiments.

We are discussing the education of students who are without any electrical engineering background, and who only aim to use motors within different engineering applications like robots, hydro-mechanical or control engineering application. Laboratory support is typically expensive, especially for countries like Serbia, but laboratories are necessary for engineering education. The paper promotes problem-based learning approach which is based on affordable or as cheap as possible laboratory experiments.",

AB - Paper deals with an analysis of differences between the male and female responses regarding thermal comfort, noise and lighting level and indoor air quality in offices. The research was done in Belgrade, Serbia, for office building in a period from March to Jun 2018. Measurements for outdoor and indoor air parameters were done, together with the statistical survey of occupants. The results showed the significant differences in responses between male and women for the same state of the environment. It is noticed that men were more sensitive to the higher temperatures, preferring colder working environment, while women stated to feel more comfortable in slightly warmer environment. Study also showed that men were more tolerant to noise, while women were more sensitive to poor air quality.

AB - The main research topics of this doctoral dissertation are modeling and control of mechanical systems, with special emphasis on robotic systems with open-chain structure. The so-called Rodriquez’s approach, which is well suited for usage on a computer and for automatic derivation of differential equations of motion, has been used for obtaining mathematical model of robot. In order to define more accurately dissipative forces occurring in robot joints when the system is in motion, a fractional order friction model, which represents a generalization of the standard model, has been introduced...

AB - This paper describes needs, possibilities, and implementation of open educational resources, which are supporting the problem-oriented engineering education based on realistic experimental results. Experimental results can partly substitute real experimentation which is necessary part of engineering education and research. Open educational resources and use of blended learning approach can improve relevancy and decrease costs of engineering education for the majority of engineering schools. These approaches include mobile learning concepts. Also, laboratories via the Internet are one way of sharing laboratory resources in order to increase the availability of experimental work. But there are many situations in which the use of Internet-mediated laboratories is nonrealistic. On the other hand, trained staff and hands-on laboratories and experimental installations are very limited resources at all engineering faculties in countries like Serbia. Because of that, the web portals for sharing experimental data (with defined experimental protocols and all relevant descriptions and tutorials) can be useful for mobile learning applications and engineering education and research.
