AB - In the paper, we analyze the operation of a plant producing refined alcohol with a capacity of 25,000 kg/day, which uses corn as the primary raw material. On the site location, there are a cow farm, a plant for the combined production of heat and electricity using biogas, and a distillery production plant. The raw material for biogas is manure from a cow farm. The energy required for the production process and the operation of the supporting systems (space heating, own consumption of the CHP plant, etc.) is obtained by burning biogas and ethanol so that fossil fuels are used only in cases of plant start-up or incident situations of production process failure.
The analysis presented in this paper aims to set up a carbon dioxide balance for a production plant with accompanying systems and its comparison to the carbon dioxide consumption necessary for corn's growth.

AB - During the sizing of the radiant zone in boilers and furnaces, the most often used method is the Lobo-Evans model. This method is based on the perfect mixing model for flue gas flow inside the fire box, which represents a conservative or pessimistic flow pattern. This paper presents a different, optimistic model which is based on the plug flow for flue gas flow which results in the largest possible heat duty. The proposed model is given in two distinct forms-integral and numerical. As shown in the paper, the integral model results in small deviations with respect to the numerical model and, as such, is well suited for the engineering practice. Paper also presents an engineering approach to the calculation of the conductive heat transfer through the membrane wall, which is shown to be sufficiently accurate and simple for engineering calculations.

AB - In order to establish a reliable procedure for estimation of heat transfer coefficient, experiments on plate finned tube heat exchangers have been conducted on five exchangers. Using own and previously published experimental data databank of 969 working regimes, a new correlation was formed. Correlation is based on hydraulic diameter and porous velocity and on the ratio of characteristic surfaces of the finned tube bundle. Statistical parameters of a new correlation for estimation of heat transfer coefficient are very good, and correlation covers a wide range of geometrical and other parameters of heat exchangers that are industrially important.

AB - On the hitherto installed chillers/rooftop units/dry coolers and air coolers, a significant improvement in cooling was noticed in the summer mode when the pipe bundle is sprayed with water. Tests have been performed on systems that produce water mist (micron-sized water droplets), which are formed by spraying water under high pressure through the nozzles/nozzle openings. When a drop of micron-sized water comes in contact with warm air, it evaporates very quickly, absorbing a certain amount of heat, which results in cooling the air. This improves the operation of the cooler in critical periods when the ambient air temperature is very high. The aim of the test is to determine the improvement of the cooler operation under operating conditions with the application of the described system in relation to the operating mode without water spraying (dry operating mode).

AB - This paper deals with the procedure for measuring the relevant parameters of plate-finned tube heat exchangers operating as an air heaters. Besides the description of the experimental installation, the most important geometric characteristics of these appliances are given. In order to determine the relevant parameters for dry and wet regimes (for cases with and without spray cooling), experimental measurements of the heat and hydraulic performance of the heat exchangers were made. Water flowed through the pipes as a warmer fluid. During the experiments, the flow rates and temperatures of the working fluids were varied within the limits defined by the operating parameters of the installation itself, sufficient to allow the obtained results to be generalized. The experimental data were processed by appropriate statistical methods; the aim was to determine equations suitable for engineering practice. The coefficients of the air-side heat and mass transfer and friction factor are defined on the complex geometry of this type of heat exchangers under realistic operating conditions, as a function of the relevant similarity criteria.

AB - This paper presents alternatives to Kalina cycles typically used in place of the organic Rankine cycle in biomass power plants. Overviews of both Rankine and Kalina cycles are given alongside the possibilities of using biomass as a viable energy source and recommended guidelines from the engineering practice for selection and management of these cycles. Benefits of Kalina novel bottoming cycle (and the alternative cycles presented herewith) over the Rankine cycle are the higher thermodynamic cycle efficiency and lower capital expenditures combined with the possibility of using low-grade heat sources, such as biomass or waste heat from exhaust gases. Analysis of ammonia-water binary system under various operating conditions has been performed for all the proposed cycles based on the published references and it has been shown that the proposed alternative models prove to be simpler and to have similar or even greater thermodynamic efficiency compared with the Kalina novel bottoming cycle.

Analysis of ammonia-water binary system under various operating conditions has been performed for all the proposed cycles based on the published references and it has been shown that the proposed alternative models prove to be simpler and to have similar or even greater thermodynamic efficiency compared with the Kalina novel bottoming cycle.",

AB - Thermoeconomic analysis of spiral heat exchanger is conducted. Different geometrical parameters, such as outer diameter, plate height, passage gap, etc. are used and varied in a wide range. Detailed thermal and total costs analyses were performed for two spiral heat exchanger with different process fluids (water and thermal oil) with temperature changes, while the wall temperature was kept constant (condensation). The results were shown graphically. It is determined that optimum values of number of entropy generation units correspond to minimum total annual cost. The optimal solution could be found in the recommended range of geometric sizes for defined inlet and outlet temperatures and process fluid-flow rate.

AB - Previous researches have proved that newly introduced parameters such as void velocity and others can be successfully used for correlating the heat transfer and pressure drop parameters. In order to establish a reliable procedure for estimation of air pressure drop, experiments on plate finned tube heat exchangers have been conducted, as well as the extensive investigation of the open literature. Using own and previously published experimental data, new correlation for estimation of air pressure drop have been established, covering a wide range of parameters of industrial importance. New correlation is comprehensive and statistically superior to any other pressure drop correlation.

AB - Removal of oxygen from feedwater is of paramount importance for safe boiler operation. Insufficient extraction of oxygen in deaeration vessels will lead to limited efficiency of oxygen scavengers and unsafe plant operation. The presented sizing procedure for packed deaeration columns is based on the similarity theory between heat and mass transfer and existing procedures. The goal of the proposed technique is not to achieve optimization of column dimensions, but to ensure that there is no undersizing of the packing height. This approach is justified considering the relatively low capital costs of deaeration columns in boiler plants. The proposed equations are based on an experimental setup involving several hundred operating regimes which have been verified and confirmed to have a high degree of accuracy.

AB - Paper presents an analysis of existing correlations for laminar liquid flow and heat transfer in tubes based on the published theoretical research and experimental data. Considering the relatively large deviation of existing correlations from the experimental data, the novel correlation for laminar heat transfer in tubes is proposed. The new correlation covers large range of tube diameters ranging from micro-scale level 125.4 mu m to conventional diameter 20.8 mm, Graetz numbers up to 6500 and fluid to wall viscosity ratio 0.0048-11.7. Correlation ratio of the newly proposed relationship for a total number of 390 experimental runs is 96.6% and standard deviation is 16.2%. Moreover, correlation covers both the hydraulically and thermally undeveloped and developed flows and all cases of boundary conditions that can be met in industrial applications.

AB - The application of supersonic gas ejector with variable area nozzle can be found in different industries. However, due to different types of variable area nozzle, performance prediction is mainly focused on costly numerical simulations. In this paper, one-dimensional models for performance prediction of variable area gas ejector with specially designed nozzle, were compared. Additionally, operational lines and corresponding modes were analyzed. Two different variable area ejectors were experimentally tested. The first ejector used natural gas as motive fluid, whereas in the second one motive gas was the composition of alkane. Six distinct correlations of ejector component efficiencies were evaluated. Sum of absolute relative errors and coefficient of determination were used as goodness of fit criteria. The results showed that best model has coefficient of determination 0.76 and 0.63 in the case of natural and R2 gas as motive fluids, respectively. In order to improve prediction performances of entrainment ratio, the mixture of experts machine learning technique was used. Moreover, the results of obtained conditional probabilities of models are visualized in space spanned by area and pressure ratios. The presented analysis showed that one model is not generally better than others and can be improved by using an ensemble of models.

abstract = "The application of supersonic gas ejector with variable area nozzle can be found in different industries. AB - This paper deals with heat exchangers having plain finned tubes in staggered (triangular) pattern. The objective of this paper is to provide the heat transfer and friction factor correlation which can be used in engineering practice. For this purpose, the experimental data of several (most cited) authors who deal with this type of heat exchangers are used. The new correlations are established to predict the air-side heat transfer coefficient and friction factor as a function of the Reynolds number and geometric variables of the heat exchanger - tube diameter, tube pitch, fin spacing, tube rows, etc. In those correlations the characteristic dimension in Reynolds number is calculated by using the new parameter - volumetric porosity. Also, there are given the errors of those correlations.

AB - In this paperwork, a novel methodology of entropy generation minimization (EGM) for counter-current and cocurrent heat exchangers is developed. The methodology can be applied in general case for all types of the heat exchangers with the counter-current and co-current flow configuration. A number of entropy generation units (NEGU) function, along with its pressure drop and temperature difference components, are presented. Additionally, evaluated EGM can be easily incorporated into some optimization algorithms for industrial practice. Beside of the theoretical background, on an example and case study were proved that the EGM analysis could be useful in practical applications of heat exchanger optimization. Furthermore, the correlation between the minimum value of NEGU and minimum of total annual costs (operational and investment costs) have been shown. Based on the EGM methodology, on a case study was presented that pressure drop of the plate countercurrent heat exchangers in series should be 36 kPa, in order to achieve minimal annual costs of the 456 EUR/year. The result corresponds to the heat exchangers in series with 2 sections and 46 plates per section.

AB - The paper deals with the problems of measurement of respective operating parameters of air cooler with finned tubes. It is given a PI diagram of the tested refrigeration system. The most important geometrical characteristics of this heat exchanger are shown. Experimental work included measurement of thermal performance on a physical model – the heat exchanger, which cooled the air by using secondary refrigerant, which has not changed phase flowing through the pipes. Flow rates and temperatures of working fluids were varied in defined operating ranges of experimental installation, which were sufficient to make generalization of experimentally obtained data. In conclusion, it is given the most important results that were obtained during the experimental and mathematical analysis of this exchanger in terms of cooling and drying air.

AB - This article presents the research results of direct contact condensation of steam on freely formed falling liquid jets. After the comparison of experimental data and open literature correlations it was concluded that published correlations does not provide accurate coverage of experimental data. A new correlation was established in the following form Nu= center dot[Re-L(1.175) center dot (mu(L)/mu(W))(1.175) + 17740] center dot We(G)(0.086)center dot Fr-L(0.023) center dot Ku(W)(1.14)/We(W)(0.098) center dot Pr-W(1.8). center dot(rho(L)/rho(W))(0.097) center dot (sigma(L)/sigma(W))(-0.12) center dot phi(H-LG/d(h))
