AB - In this paper, two types of specimens made of NIMONIC alloy were chosen for experimental investigation, one of which was laser peening-strengthened and one which was not. Nimonic is widely used for various workpieces in industry, for example in gas turbine engines, die casting inserts and cores, exhaust valves, etc. The laser shock peening offers a lot of advantages over the conventional methods using the laser beam as a tool, and a transparent and absorptive layer to increase the pressure and protect the material. The changes in surface topography are observed and analysed by microscopy, a profilometer and a microhardness tester. Some unwanted damages on their surfaces that can lead to crack initiation were observed and described along with dimensions, shapes and locations, as well as further influence on the potential crack initiation that could lead to their fracture. Aforementioned specimens were in shapes of thin plates with holes, and the reinforced specimens were strengthened by laser shot peening method around the holes. Detailed displays of damages of both specimens are given, along with the results of roughness and hardness tests which are shown for both specimens. These two tests were performed near the damage presence in both cases. Results discussed in this paper can aid the understanding of in-service behaviour of the mechanical parts with surface damages, even of laser peening-strengthened materials.

AB - The analysis of the influence of a reinforcement ring on the stress and strain state within a pressure vessel by using numerical methods is presented in this paper. The aim was to compare the numerical results for different reinforcement ring geometries (in terms of width), while assuming that a crack is present in the welded joint connecting the ring to the pressure vessel outer wall. The numerical simulation was based on a pressure vessel which is typically used as a part of hydro power plants, containing a manhole which is supported by the reinforcement ring. The results obtained by the simulation can be used as a base for further, more complex cases, such as a 3-dimensional analysis of the same problem.

AB - Locking Compression Plates (LCP) have found application in the orthopaedic healing process in modern medicine. Their design is specifically modified depending on the bone and the loading the specific bone is subjected to. Dimensions of LCP, as well as mechanical characteristics, provide greater structural resistance than the bone itself; in practice, however, continuous application and cyclic loading can lead to fails and fractures. Defining of the testing approaches and procedures used for the evaluation of the stress and location of geometrical areas with potential risk of the stress concentration represent the aim of this investigation. Results obtained in this paper show that combined use of modern experimental methods (DIC) and numerical simulations on the modified and simplified LCP geometry, can be used to locate stress and strain fields, as well as areas with stress concentration that can result in the appearance of cracks during cyclic loading.

AB - Total hip replacement implants represent permanent implants and require large bone and cartilage removal during implantation. Revision would affect joint capability to sustain load, which makes this procedure irreversible. During exploitation, i.e. everyday activities, implants are subjected to dynamic loading. Thereby, these structures are prone to failure by fatigue. Highest stress states on total hip replacement implants are present in the neck area of the implant, which is a position of crack initiation. Under loading the implant neck exhibits tension and compression zones. Crack initiation in the neck side under tension would lead to crack opening and certain fracture. Implants are examined by experimental and numerical methods. The most common numerical method is finite element method (FEM) used to simulate different loading conditions. In this paper numerical analysis of stress distribution in the neck area is performed on a specific implant. Four numerical models are created in order to show how certain design solutions influence the stress distribution in the neck area.

AB - Shown in this paper are the results of microstructure testing of crane wheels, along with the repair welding procedure performed by hard-surfacing. Repair welding involved the application of a welded layer to the crane wheel, due to the damage that was caused by wear. Detailed analyses, based on the mechanical and chemical properties of the materials used for crane wheels, as well as for repair welding, were performed for the contact between the rail and wheel in real exploitation conditions, as well as by using numerical simulations. Numerical simulations were performed by using the finite element method. For the purpose of the analysis, contact stresses between the wheel and rail were calculated according to Hertz theory. Each of the numerical models was used to perform stress analysis with or without a crack in order to determine crack influence on the crane wheel integrity, and to compare the results with the values obtained theoretically. In addition, the symmetry of the contact area between the wheel and rail was taken into account, i.e. both symmetric and asymmetric contact models were made.

AB - Numerical analysis of the stress state in a tooth of a repaired shaft in Zelezara Smederevo is presented, along with the repair welding procedure. The need for repairs arose due to exploitation conditions and regular maintenance. Due to repair welding activities, cracks have occurred, which can affect the shaft tooth integrity. The machining process, focused on crack elimination, as well as the reduction of their influence, is given in this paper. The use of finite element method confirmed that cracks with length less than 5 mm do not affect the integrity of the tooth in the case they are located in the compressed front zone of the tooth, i.e. if the cracks are positioned longitudinally.

AB - The method for repairing (replacement) of a bottom panel of hot water boiler in Valjevo heating plant, with a power of 30 MW, manufactured by Remming is presented in this paper. Damage that occurred on the bottom panel were a consequence of conditions under which the boiler was working, which resulted in the thinning of pipe walls of the boiler bottom panel. Metal corrosion caused this thinning of pipe walls under the presence of sulfuric acid. The procedure used for repairing, i.e. the replacing of the bottom panel of the boiler is shown. Repair welding was performed using the MAG procedure, combined with gas welding. In addition, the requirements of the welding technology related to successful repairing of the equipment are also discussed.

AB - Total hip replacement implants represent permanent implants, and require large bone and cartilage removal during implantation. Revision would affect joint capability to sustain load, which makes this procedure irreversible. During exploitation, i.e. everyday activities, implants are exposed to high influence of dynamic load, which will lead to failure of material by fatigue. Highest stress states on total hip replacement implants are present in neck area of implant, which is a position of crack initiation. Under loading neck area of implant contains tension and compression zones. Crack initiation on neck side under tension would lead to crack opening and certain fracture of the material. Implants are designed to reduce stress concentration on tension side of the neck and to create maximal stress concentration on compression side of the neck, where eventual crack would be pressed by material preventing its further propagation. Implants are examined with experimental and numerical methods. Most common numerical method is finite element method (FEM), used to simulate different loading conditions. Numerical analysis of stress distribution in neck area on specific implant was computed for static load equal to maximal load applied on implant. Subject of this paper is influence of implant geometry on stress distribution in neck area, thereby analysis was performed only for implant. Contact bone-implant was compensated with adequate boundary conditions. Material properties of selected implant were obtained from literature. Four numerical models were created in order to show how certain reductions of material influence on stress distribution in neck area of implant. The objective of this paper was to analyse these solutions.

AB - Presented in this paper are two methods for repair welding of a total of 8 gear shafts (toothed shafts) of service rollers in the "Topla valjaonica" rolling mill within Železara Smederevo. Damage that occurs in these shafts is a consequence of exploitation conditions, which lead to lateral wear of the tooth up to one half of its thickness, due to adhesion and surface fatigue. Shown in the following text are the procedures for repair welding of gear shafts, including manual arc welding (MAW procedure) and the automatic welding procedure (FCAW). In addition, the requirements that need to be fulfilled in order to successfully perform the repair welding, so that the repaired pars can be exploited again, are presented. The techno-economical analysis had confirmed the technological and economical justifiability of applying this repair welding methods, compared to purchasing of new parts.

AB - Presented in this paper is the case of unsuccessfully performed repair welding of the upper
treiber roll in the „Topla Valjaonica“ facility within the Železara Smederevo, currently known today as Hesteel ltd. Inadequate and improperly performed welding technology resulted in the occurrence of a large number of cracks, with the possibility of their propagation to the parent material. The upper and lower treiber roll are parts of the installation whose purpose is to fold the rolled strip and then send it to be further machined. The parent material used for the upper treiber roll was the structural steel S235J0. Repair welding was the consequence of damage that occurred during the exploitation of the roll. Shown in the paper are some of the cracks detected on the welded surface of the upper treiber roll. The analysis of the reasons behind the occurrence of these cracks is presented, and machining was recommended for the purpose of removing of these cracks, along with the use of certain NDT methods.

AB - Repair welding has caused crack initiation in the upper Treiber roll in the steel works plant mill at Zelezara in Smederevo. The upper and lower Treiber rolls serve the purpose of folding and directing rolled metal strips, supplied by the output rollers to the coiling mandrel. The parent material of the upper Treiber roll is S235JO. Unsuccessful welding resulted in a series of further activities to remove cracks. In addition, the cracks are identified on the Treiber roll for easier designation and monitoring while machining. Hardness tests have been performed on specific locations within the welded hard layer. After machining and removal of the whole welded layer with defects, it is determined that the welding activities contributed to the occurrence of a number of cracks in the parent material, which did not exist prior to surfacing. Hence, steps that need to be taken in order to eliminate these cracks in the parent material are suggested at the end of this paper.

AB - The method used for repairing of the bottom panel of hot water boiler of 30 MW power, manufactured by Remming (a part of the 'Valjevo' Heating Plant) is presented in this paper along with the reasons why damage has occurred. The damage appeared on bottom panel as a consequence of service conditions to which the boiler was subjected. It has resulted in the thinning of tube walls in the bottom panel. Low-temperature has been determined as the cause of the tube damage, i.e. due to the presence of sulphuric acid. For the purpose of damage analysis and proper selection of the repair welding technology, the first tube wall measurements were performed in the boiler bottom panel. Upon determining the necessary repairs, and due to damages not originally included, the wall thickness tests are repeated and microstructural analysis by metallographic replica testing (for one tube) is performed. No major microstructural defects typically caused by exploitation conditions have been detected on the examined screen tube surface. The repair welding procedure which involved replacing of the bottom panel is also shown, along with suggestions for further damage prevention. Repair welding is performed using MAG welding procedure, combined with gas welding.

AB - During the experimental testing of a welded joint, made of steel P460NL1, complete strain and displacement fields, which provide full insight into the behaviour of a welded joint under tensile load, were obtained using an optical stereometric measuring method. Optical stereometric method involved the application of digital image correlation. Presented in this paper are the strain and displacement for various load levels are shown, along with the behaviour of the welded joint as a whole. As a result of this approach, concrete and accurate values of the observed strain field as a whole can be compared directly, rather than as chosen representative parts that would be tested using a strain gauge in a single position, and provide a more detailed insight into the behaviour of the tested joint. With the aid of images obtained using cameras, the development of strain over time can be monitored, while pointing out the critical parts of a welded joint, allowing the determining of potential locations with increased stress intensity factor.

AB - Exploitation safety of pressure equipment depends, among other factors, on the possibility of predicting the behaviour of each of its components during exploitation. If the safety of analysis is oriented towards materials which are used for manufacturing of individual parts of pressure equipment, such as mantle, lids and flanges, predicting their behaviour is relatively simple since the properties of these materials are generally similar in all directions. However, predicting the behaviour of welded joints is significantly harder and less reliable, due to a number of reasons, including chemical and structural non-homogeneity, changes in wall geometry at the welded joint site, as well as residual stresses and weld forming defects. Occasionaly, different pressure equipment parts are made of different types of steel, due to optimisation, which results in heterogeneous welded joints. Because of the difference in physical and mechanical properties of these steels, their joints have their own specificities, which make predicting their behaviour during exploitation much more complicated.

AB - In this paper a numerical investigation of replacement implant for partial hip arthroplasty is presented. The long-term stability of hip implants depends, among other things, on the loads acting across the joint. Forces occurring in vivo can be much greater than the recommended test values, because a typical gait cycle generates forces up to 6-7 times the body weight in the hip joint. A finite element analysis (FEA) was performed using 3-dimensional models to examine the mechanical behaviour of the femoral component at forces ranging from 2.5 to 6.3 kN. This implant design was chosen for numerical analysis because stress concentration in femoral component lead to implant fracture. Results show that the force magnitudes acting on the implant are of interest, and that they can cause implant stress field changes and implant stability problems, which can lead to implant failure.

AB - Locking Compression Plates (LCP) have found great application in the orthopedic healing process in the modern medicine nowadays. Their design is specifically modified depending on the bone and the loading a specific bone is subjected to. Dimensions of LCP as well as mechanical characteristics provide greater structural resistance than the bone itself, but as a consequence of continues application as well as cyclic loading, practice has shown that fails and breaks accrue. Defining of the testing approaches and procedures used for the evaluation of the stress and location of the potentially risk geometrical areas represent the aim of this paper. Results obtained in this paper apply modern experimental as well as numerical simulations on the modified and simplified LCP geometry with an aim to locate stress and strain fields, as well as areas with a stress concentration that can result in the appearance of the cracks during the cyclic loading.

AB - Presented in this paper is the effect of plasma welding (hardfacing) and carbides presence on the occurrence of cracks and micro-cracks in the welded layer. The reasons behind this phenomenon were analyzed and explained. In addition, the plasma welding technology with all the necessary data such as welding parameters is shown for the case of a non-damaged tooth of a machine used for milling of marble. Welded layer with a significant amount of tungsten-carbide was applied onto new, non-damaged tooth in order to improve the characteristics of the surface layer of the base material, by increasing its hardness which leads to increasing of wear resistance and impact toughness. After welding, tooth was cut using an electrical discharge machining (EDM) for the purpose of examinations of the ap-plied surface layer in different locations throughout welded joint. Macro and micro-structure analysis aided in determining the characteristics of the surface layer. The nature and causes of cracks and micro-cracks were analyzed, in order to provide a better solution to avoid cracks occurrences, as well as in determining of their potential effect on the integri-ty of the tooth as a whole.

AB - The main goal of this paper was to determine the technological and economic aspects of a pipeline supporting structure related to the selection of different steel beam profiles. For that purpose, numerical models were made in ABAQUS, using IPE and HEA profiles, and were subjected to wind loads in order to calculate stress and displacement fields, wherein the calculations were performed in the elastic area of deformation. Based on these results it was possible to determine the savings in terms of raw material costs, along with the weight reduction of the whole metal construction. From these results, it was concluded that the construction made of IPE profiles was the cost-effective solution, due to its smaller weight, which also suggests that such a construction would be easier to manufacture and manipulate.

AB - The behaviour of welded joints in local zones, as well as their mutual influence, represents one of the main challenges in welded structure design. Namely, the main issue lies in determining the mechanical properties of materials in a welded joint. These properties are necessary for an accurate calculation of welded structure integrity. The possibility of obtaining local strain/displacement values makes the "Digital Image Correlation" (DIC) technique suitable for welded joint testing and determining of mechanical properties. In this paper a tensile testing machine was used for loading and a two camera system was used for 3D strain analysis. A specimen with parallel sides, obtained by welding of a V joint was used. Calibration was performed prior to testing, in order to ensure dimensional consistency of the system. Application of DIC technique using Aramis software for measuring local displacement/strain in a welded joint is presented in this paper. Due to tension in the V-weld specimen (Base material - S235JRG2, electrode wire - VAC 60), mutual influence of mechanical properties of local zones is present, wherein the root weld had the highest stiffness.

AB - In this paper the analysis of existing design of mechanical heart valves is presented, as well as the
application of advanced numerical methods, primarily the finite element method for the design and analysis of these implants. A heart valve model was designed using CAD software. Further numerical analysis was performed using finite element method. For the analysis of this model, pyrolytic carbon was the selected material. Load cases of valve leaves and ring were analyzed, and relevant results were presented. It is shown that the results obtained by numerical methods can be a good starting ground for the design analysis of biomedical implants, but that it is necessary to perform further development of the model.

AB - Shown in this paper is the application of stereometric deformation measuring method on a welded
joint made of steel P460NL1, along with its drawbacks. Stereometric measuring of deformation is a technique with a wide application in measuring of deformation and displacement in objects with simple or complex geometry. Despite its high accuracy, it is susceptible to errors which could provide an inaccurate insight into the behavior of the tested object, thereby resulting in incorrect material properties. This typically occurs due to the inaccurate calibration of the ARAMIS measuring system. In case of welded joint, the effects of heat and chemical composition of various parts of the welded joint are also present, which makes the problem more complex, and the conclusions may be incorrect or insufficiently accurate.
