AB - The numerical analysis of the behaviour of a pressure vessel with a reinforcement ring subjected to both static and dynamic load is presented in this paper. This research was based on a previous analysis which involved different reinforcement ring dimensions, and their influence on the stress distribution within the pressure vessel, assuming the presence of a crack (Sedmak et al., in: International Conference on Structural Integrity and Durability, 2017). The aim was to compare the numerical results for two models, one of which was a 2D model simulated with classic FEM, whereas the other included a 3D fatigue crack, and was simulated with extended finite element method, using Morfeo software. The numerical simulation was based on a pressure vessel which is typically used as a part of hydropower plants, containing a manhole which is supported by the reinforcement ring. The analysis focused on a crack that was located in the welded joint between the reinforcement ring and the pressure vessel mantle. The results obtained by the simulations have shown the differences in the stress magnitudes and in the consequences resulting from the crack growth in both cases, depending on the type of the load, wherein the second (fatigue) load case was noticeably more extreme.

AB - This paper is focused on the experimental measuring of impact energy as a part of the doctoral dissertation involving the fatigue behaviour of welded joints, made of fine grain normalised micro-alloyed low carbon high strength steel P460NL1 [1,2], typically used for pressure vessels working at subzero temperatures. VAC 65 [3] was used as filler material, and two plates were welded using the MAG welding procedure (with 82% Ar + 18% CO2 shielding gas). The specimens were taken from two opposite ends of the welded plate, taking into account the measured values of groove edge temperature in these locations, wherein the temperatures in Location 2 (near the end of the weld) were higher than those in Location 1 (near the weld's beginning). Based on their specific position, in terms of temperature and notch position (weld root or face), the specimens were divided into four groups of three. This testing was performed using a SCHENCK-TREBEL instrumented Charpy pendulum. The total impact energy was determined, along with its components, crack initiation and crack propagation energy. The obtained results have confirmed that the test specimens were of high toughness, with total impact energy ranging from 165200 J, at room temperature. The crack propagation energy was the dominant component, being several times greater than the crack initiation energy, as was expected.

AB - The main goal in this research is the experimental crack growth analysis for certain welded joint constituents of complex high strength alloyed steels, concerning both the specimens and real structures, as well as the influence of crack growth on the safety of the welded joint. In order to perform the welding of such structural steels, the welding filler material is designed to obtain a somewhat lower value of the weld metal strength than the strength of the parent metal (PM) (undermatching effect). The onset of plastic flow in this type of welded joint occurs initially in the weld metal (WM). Thus, plastic deformation in the PM does not occur until the deformation hardening of the WM reaches the plasticity limit of the PM. First, the finite element method is applied as a numerical tool, followed by two experimental methods: the strain gauge method, and the digital image correlation method. Literature connected to all the disciplines concerning this research has been collected, studied and systematized in detail. The difference in the welded joint behaviour as a whole and its constituents has been analysed through tension testing of specimens produced with both overmatched and undermatched weld metal, which is important for assessing the crack growth resistance, since it brings major results on the material behaviour of the loaded structure. In the effort to prove this assumption, at first - based on experimental results the numerical simulation is performed by applying ABAQUS software on three-point bending specimen behaviour. The application of the finite element method has proved an acceptable weldability of the undermatched steel weld and the resistance to crack growth and brittle fracture. The possibilities for a fast and relatively simple model development are shown, representing competent realistic specimen behaviour, both concerning stress concentrations and deformation fields in external loading experimental conditions. These models clearly depict the crack propagation. The procedure for experimental analysis is defined, and based on the results obtained, the stresses and plastic deformations have been confirmed to reach the highest levels at locations of acting loads and crack tips, as has been expected...

AB - The analysis of the influence of a reinforcement ring on the stress and strain state within a pressure vessel by using numerical methods is presented in this paper. The aim was to compare the numerical results for different reinforcement ring geometries (in terms of width), while assuming that a crack is present in the welded joint connecting the ring to the pressure vessel outer wall. The numerical simulation was based on a pressure vessel which is typically used as a part of hydro power plants, containing a manhole which is supported by the reinforcement ring. The results obtained by the simulation can be used as a base for further, more complex cases, such as a 3-dimensional analysis of the same problem.

AB - The steels fracture toughness was measured at two different temperature T= - 60°C and T = -90°C, at v=0.02 mm/min and v=0.5 mm/min. The following steels: CrMoV, 20MnMoNi55, A533B and A508 were tested with three different sizes of CT specimens 50 and 100 and 200. Those steels are weldable, although the authors investigated the fracture behaviour of base material. In order to satisfy statistical analyses, a large number of specimens were tested. Fracture behaviour has turned out to be typical, S-shaped curve for transitional fracture at low temperatures. Apart from the other variables, specimen’s width significantly affects measured toughness. Smaller specimens, CT50, might be considered of upper bound reliability while the CT200 specimens were shown to be the most conservative. In this way it has been shown that wider specimens are more reliable in a fracture assessment of the examined steels. In this paper, the fracture probabilities of specimens in function of fracture toughness were determined as well, and it could be concluded that the widest specimens are the most likely to be broken for the same values of the fracture toughness.

In this paper, the fracture probabilities of specimens in function of fracture toughness were determined as well, and it could be concluded that the widest specimens are the most likely to be broken for the same values of the fracture toughness.",

AB - JLB (cleavage lower bound toughness) assessment performed by testing of a single specimen represents a reliable method for evaluating of the lower limit based on one or more fracture toughness results, with considerable scatter. This method can be used to assess he lower limit in the transition area via single specimen testing for each required temperature. Method gives the best estimates for small specimens, which are characterized by significant result scatter and might be considered of upper bound reliability. In this paper, the fracture probabilities of specimens in function of fracture toughness were determined as well, and it could be concluded that the widest specimens are the most likely to be broken for the same values of the fracture toughness.

AB - The method for repairing (replacement) of a bottom panel of hot water boiler in Valjevo heating plant, with a power of 30 MW, manufactured by Remming is presented in this paper. Damage that occurred on the bottom panel were a consequence of conditions under which the boiler was working, which resulted in the thinning of pipe walls of the boiler bottom panel. Metal corrosion caused this thinning of pipe walls under the presence of sulfuric acid. The procedure used for repairing, i.e. the replacing of the bottom panel of the boiler is shown. Repair welding was performed using the MAG procedure, combined with gas welding. In addition, the requirements of the welding technology related to successful repairing of the equipment are also discussed.

AB - The aim of this paper is to present the possibilities of application of digital image correlation (DIC)
method in measuring crack propagation in a welded joint specimen with a notch. For this purpose, specimens were taken from butt welded plates, made of P460NL1 micro-alloyed steel, which is typically used in manufacturing of pressure vessels, such as pipelines and storage tanks. Solid wire FILTUB 12M was used as additional material for the welded joints. Fatigue pre-cracking of threepoint bending specimens was done on the hydraulic testing machine 1332 INSTRON-100 kN by introducing fatigue crack in the weld metal region of the welded joint.
After that specimens were analysed using digital image correlation software ARAMIS. This optical measuring system, in addition to the software also includes two cameras, which were used to record images of crack propagation in three dimensions, as well as the strain field.

First, by rigidly joining the two parts together, the resulting system is stronger than the sum of its parts. Second, composite action can better utilize the properties of each constituent material. Composites consisting of resin matrices reinforced with discontinuous glass fibers and continuous glass-fiber mats are widely used in truck and automobile components bearing light loads.

AB - Dimensioning of pressure vessels can be done according to various criteria, the basic one being the safety against the fracture by splashing. In this paper two methods for this dimensioning procedure are presented. The first one is based on application of the classical mechanics while the second one uses the fracture mechanics principles. Both methods were applied for checking the exploitation properties and capability of a vapor distributor in a power plant. Based on the in-situ measured damages and calculations by both methods, it was concluded that the vapor distributor could be further used as a part of the boiler installation in the local power plant. The second criterion, based on the application of the fracture mechanics principles, provided more reliable results than the first one, based on the classical mechanics.
