Failure analysis and numerical simulation of slab carrying clamps

AB  - The goal of this study was to determine the reasons for failure of slab carrying clamps which had occurred in one of the clamp support levers. Detailed fractography analysis revealed that there was a welded joint at the location where failure occurred, which was not expected, since the second lever was not welded. Once the presence of the welded joint was confirmed by hardness measuring and the analysis of chemical composition, attempts were made to determine which materials were used for the welding, in order to obtain a more detailed insight into the nature of the failure. The first step of this extensive analysis involved the development of a simple, approximated numerical model, with the goal of determining the location of stress concentration in the support lever, so that it could be compared to the real failure location. Further investigations will involve more complex models, including the ones that will simulate crack growth, once its location is numerically verified.

Repair welding procedure and techno-economic analysis of burner pipe

AB  - The selection of the electrode for repair welding is one of the activities needed before repairing machine parts. In this case, damages that have occurred in a burner pipe welded joint during manufacture or previous repair welding have resulted in the need to replace the previously used electrodes with more suitable ones for the exploitation conditions to which the burner is subjected. For this purpose, 2 specimens welded with 2 different electrodes (Castolin and 6825 and PIVA 25/20 B) are cut from the pipes and tested. Micro- and macro-analyses of these specimens are performed, along with hardness testing. It is concluded that the Castolin 6825 electrode is better suited for burner pipe repair welding. Following this, the test repair welding of the burner pipe is performed. In addition to penetrant tests of the welded pipe, a short overview of the techno-economic analysis of the repaired pipe is given, including the ratio of repair price to the price of manufacturing a new burner.

Repair attempts of cold crack on forklift made of C45 steel: Case study

AB  - This paper describes the attempts of forklift repair, wherein cold cracks initiated due to residual stresses, in order to allow further exploitation. These forks were made of non-alloyed steel with high carbon content, steel C45, which typically requires heat treatment in order to be properly welded. For this reason, the welding technology used for the manufacturing and repairing the equipment in question was carefully analysed in order to determine the cause of cold cracks, after each attempt at repairing. It was determined that the cracks were not the consequence of the welding procedure themselves, but were caused by defects in the base material itself, which were impossible to remove by welding.

Damages of burner pipes due to the working conditions and its repair welding

AB  - Repair welding represents the activity that restores the working capability of machine or construction caused by some damage due to working or environmental condition. Damages of burner pipes, part of the facility "Cold Rolling Mill" Steelwork in Smederevo, which appeared on welded joints during the manufacturing of the burner, and its repairing are presented in this paper. The damages occurred on welded joints along the weld as a result of the working conditions that burner was exposed to. Due to high temperatures that can reach up to 850 degrees C and "explosion" during gas burning, a crack may appear on the inner side of the burner. The base material of the burner pipes is stainless steel X12NiCrSi35-16. Repair welding is preceded by a series of operations, and one of them is the selection of an electrode. It turned out that inadequate selection of the electrode for repair welding had contributed to the occurrence of cracks on welded joints. Selecting a new electrode and examining its characteristics, as well as performing test welding of pipe that is still in exploitation, had confirmed the importance of proper selection of materials for repairing of burner pipes.

presented in this paper. Following the previously performed repair welding, a large number of
cracks were detected, located along the length of the welded joint, as well as along the transversal
direction. Based on the analyses of cracks and the initial welding procedure, additional repair
welding was performed, for the purpose of eliminating these cracks. Due to the base material of the rail and its characteristics (i.e. poor weldability), adequate preheating and heat treatment had to be taken into account, and particular attention needed to be devoted to the way in which the welded joint is laid. Apart from the base material quality, aforementioned parameters have considerable influence on the welded joint quality and cracks initiation.

AB  - Presented in this paper is the case of unsuccessfully performed repair welding of the upper
treiber roll in the „Topla Valjaonica“ facility within the Železara Smederevo, currently known today as Hesteel ltd. Inadequate and improperly performed welding technology resulted in the occurrence of a large number of cracks, with the possibility of their propagation to the parent material. The upper and lower treiber roll are parts of the installation whose purpose is to fold the rolled strip and then send it to be further machined. The parent material used for the upper treiber roll was the structural steel S235J0. Repair welding was the consequence of damage that occurred during the exploitation of the roll. Shown in the paper are some of the cracks detected on the welded surface of the upper treiber roll. The analysis of the reasons behind the occurrence of these cracks is presented, and machining was recommended for the purpose of removing of these cracks, along with the use of certain NDT methods.

AB  - Repair welding has caused crack initiation in the upper Treiber roll in the steel works plant mill at Zelezara in Smederevo. The upper and lower Treiber rolls serve the purpose of folding and directing rolled metal strips, supplied by the output rollers to the coiling mandrel. The parent material of the upper Treiber roll is S235JO. Unsuccessful welding resulted in a series of further activities to remove cracks. In addition, the cracks are identified on the Treiber roll for easier designation and monitoring while machining. Hardness tests have been performed on specific locations within the welded hard layer. After machining and removal of the whole welded layer with defects, it is determined that the welding activities contributed to the occurrence of a number of cracks in the parent material, which did not exist prior to surfacing. Hence, steps that need to be taken in order to eliminate these cracks in the parent material are suggested at the end of this paper.

The upper and lower Treiber rolls serve the purpose of folding and directing rolled metal strips, supplied by the output rollers to the coiling mandrel. The parent material of the upper Treiber roll is S235JO. Unsuccessful welding resulted in a series of further activities to remove cracks. In addition, the cracks are identified on the Treiber roll for easier designation and monitoring while machining. Hardness tests have been performed on specific locations within the welded hard layer. After machining and removal of the whole welded layer with defects, it is determined that the welding activities contributed to the occurrence of a number of cracks in the parent material, which did not exist prior to surfacing. Hence, steps that need to be taken in order to eliminate these cracks in the parent material are suggested at the end of this paper.",
