AB - High speed bearing assemblies are widely applied in many industries, especially in the airspace and automotive. Design of these assemblies is highly challenging due to some opposed factors affecting their proper functionality. On the one side, there is a condition of rotor-dynamics, which implies the shaft to rotate as stable as possible, retaining its original shape. In regards to this, it was observed that having one elastic and one stiff support, rather than having two stiff supports, provides better dynamic behaviour. On the other side, due to high rotational speed, these assemblies have to be sealed contactlessly, by means of labyrinth, centrifugal or similar types of seals. These seals operate with very small gaps between their rotor and stator. In order to obtain the lowest possible gap in the sealing which allows displacements of the shaft supported by one elastic and one stiff support, a specific design solution is developed. Testing procedure and results, together with design solutions are presented in this paper.

AB - The concept of this dissertation is to develop the numerical model of the wearing process of the sliding bearing in contact with the shaft. If compared to the experimental methods, the numerical method is significantly faster and more cost-effective, thus the development of this model is of great scientific, as well as practical importance. In order to achieve the ultimate goal – the development of the numerical model, it was necessary to apply and combine several different scientific methods: experimental, analytical, statistical and numerical. Combining the experimental and analytical procedure, based on the change in the thickness of the samples’ wall, the methodology for determining the worn volume of the ring (sliding bearing) in contact with the cylinder (shaft) is proposed. This methodology can be applied for the sample made of any material with above mentioned geometry. The worn volume is further used to calculate the Archard coefficient, which is a necessary input value for the wear simulation. Among others, one contribution of this dissertation is the exact value of the Archard coefficient for the material PTFE polyamide. The value obtained by the experiments is verified by comparing it with the Archard coefficients of the similar materials, obtained from the literature. Bringing the polymer sample in contact with the fluid (by initial lubrication, cleaning in the ultrasonic bath, etc.), it absorbs certain amount of the fluid. The mass of the absorbed fluid compensates an amount of the worn mass. Hence, if compared volumetric loss with the mass loss, the volumetric loss will always appear significantly higher, and these two approaches of the loss measurements cannot be correlated. This is also proved in this thesis. The contact pressure of the tribo-pair is determined by analytically and numerically. The results obtained by two different methods are in high correlation.

AB - Property based design - PBD approach provides improvement of various properties and characteristics. In the area of transmission units', by applyng PBD, significantly are increased service life and reliability, inclouding vibration and noise reduction. Together with these improvements, operating conditions of gear unit components got significantly worst and possible failure relations are changed and needs the new approaches in analysis in comparison to the traditional one.
This article has intention to create relation between possible failures of gearbox components, according to mentioned trends. The main trend is significant reduction of dimensions which is in strong contradiction with gear lubrication and cooling. Together with increase of rotation speed, these contradictory effects transforms pitting as the dominant gear failure into the scoring of the teeth contact surfaces. This and similar failure transitions are presented. In order to prevent it, specific cooling and lubrication systems have to be developed. This is the reason that design structure of gear transmission units getting more and more complex.
From presented point of view, failures of gear transmission components interaction is important design constraint and it justifies the introduction of the term Failure based Design - FBD of gear transmission units. Presented cases study of transmission units for various applications, contains mentioned analysys and FBD application.

AB - Thrust ball bearings with extremely large size and capacity, are not standardized and could not be found in catalogues. In aim to investigate possible failure causes of thrust ball bearings in heavy machinery excavators, this paper presents stress and deformations calculation supported with FME analysis in balls-raceway interfaces because of carrying whole upper construction and allow rotation movement. In this paper it was performed numerical calculations and their comparison for two, conceptually different types of large size thrust bearings. First one is classical pivot, such as load distribution in modified new bearing solution. Contact stress calculation of those bearings and FME analysis show that stress and deformation values for ball are near to the limit of static load capacity. Presented study supported by images of balls and raceways damage appearance, with or without grease as a lubricant, could be very useful in the bearing failure analysis.

AB - Self-lubricating sliding bearings made of polymer materials are used when lubrication is impossible due to construction reasons, or lubricant could spoil the product (i.e. in food industry), in chemically active environments which could affect the metal bearings, etc. In this paper there are presented the results of starting tribological tests on self-lubricated sliding bearings made of composite materials with PTFE and POM base. Above mentioned tests were carried using own testing machine USL 5-30 designed for investigation of self-lubricating sliding bearings. In this paper authors are going to present some of starting obtained results, such are friction coefficient and operating temperature trends due to an operating time. Even those are starting investigations for this kind of bearing; authors are going to try to obtain some values of the wear rate for both of materials.

AB - Self-lubricating sliding bearings are widely used in industrial applications and we could assort them in several groups towards manufacturing or lubrication. Some of them, such are oil-retaining porous bearings have been long time studied, but plastic bearings are not enough investigated where we have just some of experimental results. Self-lubricating plastic bearings are produced on polymer basis which is optimized with fiber reinforcement and solid lubricants. They are an ideal solution for machinery that require clean and oil-free operation. Plastic bearings also perform well in dirty environments since there is no oil to attract dust and dirt. Authors of this paper describe main performances and reasons why this kind of bearings are current widely used. A few typical applications of plastic bearings are presented in the paper, taking into account advantages in lubrication, production and maintenance costs in comparison with classical rolling and sliding bearings.

Ballroom Dance as a common activitie with practically importance is not enough studied and analyzed from the tribological point of view. This paper presents an attempt in this direction dealing with study of tribology aspects by analyzing a couple of Standard and Latin ballroom dances with characteristic steps and choreography. This paper shows an approximate calculation of friction forces and torques caused by some common movements and their influence on interaction in foot floor interface. Besides the approximate calculation of friction loss, authors have measured and analyze the total energy consumption by making several experiments with corresponding equipment.

AB - Parameters that characterize semiconductor devices are often determined with difficulty, and their values very frequently depend on the method used for measurements and analysis. The extraction of diode parameters from the obtained I-V measurements could be complicated by their dependence on the voltage and the presence of series resistance. Therefore, an interpretation of the experimental I-V data must be very carefully made. In this paper, some methods for obtaining diode parameters such as saturation current, ideality factor and series resistance are presented. An evaluation of these methods based on their application for the extraction of the relevant parameters of photodiodes is also performed. Some of the methods that produce reliable and reproducible results are evaluated based on the experimentally obtained results, and in the view of the complexity of the used methods and their limitations.

AB - Degradation of electrical and optical characteristics of photodetectors in increased temperature conditions is one of the most important limitation factors for their application. Since most of the electrical processes in semiconductor devices depend, to some extent, on temperature, investigations carried out at temperatures higher than room temperature may reveal possible changes in the output characteristics of a device. Temperature dependence of the current-voltage characteristics could suggest a dominant current flow mechanism, and the values of the ideality factor (n) and n(T) dependence could also indicate the presence, location and type of impurities and defects. This is especially important when impurities, localized near dislocations in the material, have energy levels deep in the energy gap. Such localized energy states could act as traps or recombination centers for charge carriers, modulating output current and inducing current noise in photodetector devices. So-called extent current (fluctuations in the output current), indicates the presence of both generation-recombination and burst noise. Magnitudes of these fluctuations are directly connected to the ideality factor and temperature, so monitoring of the n(T) dependence could indicate the changes (degradation) in not only electrical but also in optical properties of the photodiodes.

AB - The aim of this work is examining the influence of the number of the activation-over-voltage pulses to the aging of over-voltage protection elements. Both non-linear (gas-filled surge arresters (GFSA), varistors, over-voltage diodes) and linear (capacitors-constituents of filters) over-voltage protection elements were tested. The instruments employed allow reliable measurements, 1000 consecutive activation were tested. The double-exponential current pulse (amplitude I-1(max) = 13 A, I-2(max) = 16 A, rise time T-1 = 8 mus, fall time T-2 = 20 mus) for non-linear elements and a double-exponential over-voltage pulse (rise time T-1 = 1.2 mus, fall time T-2 = 50 mus) of the amplitude U-1(max) = 320 V, U-2(max) = 480 V and U-3(max) = 640 V for capacitors were used. The experimental results show that the over-voltage diodes are the most reliable elements in view of characteristic modifications that are consequence of aging. However, it was observed that varistors, GFSA and capacitors undergo noticeable changes in characteristics.

The influence of irradiation was determined by forward current-voltage (I-V) measurements of electrical characteristics. From I-V data, the ideality factor, saturation current, and series resistance were determined as a function of irradiation. Possible degradation of the electrical performance of photodetectors induced by irradiation was studied via ideality factor and its connection with the current transport mechanisms in these devices.
