AB  - This paper is devoted to the ductile–brittle transition behavior of high strength low alloyed structural steel NIOMOL 490K. This steel grade is designed for welded pressure vessels exposed to dynamic loads, operating at temperatures below zero, and that is why it must have acceptable toughness. Due to its importance for the safety assessment of pressure vessels, a characterization of this steel with Charpy V-notch test in range of temperature between-60 ⁰C and +60 ⁰C was undertaken. Ductile-to-brittle transition temperature curves were generated in the present study by using instrumented Charpy pendulum impact test on V-notch specimens. Notches were located in the parent material, heat-affected zone and weld metal. The nil-ductility temperature and tensile properties in temperature range from -60 ⁰C to +60 ⁰C are presented in this paper. We used different test temperatures to better understand ductile-to brittle transition response than just use either Charpy energy or other related ductility criteria.

AB  - Most of the serious weldment failures lead to catastrophic consequences in terms of damage of other equipment, loss of production, and risks to workers' health and safety. Hence, there is motivation to find margin between safety and disaster. This necessitates guaranteeing the integrity of a welded structure even if a crack is present. Therefore, influence of the material inhomogeneity and residual stresses on deformation and fracture behavior needs to be described precisely. Fracture mechanics parameters J - integral and CTOD have attracted great interest in recent years. Two three point bending specimens of base metal (BM) and weld metal (WM) were tested according to standard BS EN ISO 15653. Than, a two dimensional finite element analysis was performed in Ansys Workbench software to calculate J-integral, and compare with experimental results. The aim of this work is to explore the possibility of using the test results in the reliable prediction of weldment fracture.

Numerical simulation of fatigue crack propagation: A case study of defected steam pipeline

AB  - In order to prevent the premature failure of steam pipeline produced of molybdenum-vanadium steel, the experimental tests were performed to measure fracture toughness and to determine the mechanical behaviour of cracked pipes. A finite element method was used to calculate the fracture behaviour of the pressurized pipeline made of 14MoV6-3 steel based on the J-integral computation. The J-R curves were experimentally obtained by the elastic unloading compliance method for the single edge notched bend specimens and compared with those obtained using finite element method. A two dimensional finite element analysis was performed in Ansys Workbench software to determine the stress distribution and calculate J-integral values for the selected specimen geometry. Special attention was paid to the influence of applied boundary conditions on the accuracy of J-integral values, as well as to the influence of mesh density. It is shown that numerically obtained J-values significantly depend on the number of nodes used to apply displacements. However, if recommendations proposed in this paper are implemented, the accuracy of calculated values is satisfactory and successful failure analysis can be carried out. This approach can be useful in engineering applications where time saving and costs reducing are required.

AB  - Steel grade 14MoV6-3 is a low-carbon microalloyed steel with addition of chromium and molybdenum. This grade is designed mainly for power industry applications, withstanding operating at elevated temperatures.In this paper, mechanical properties of steel grade 14MoV6-3 and methodology of calculation of critical values of the J-integral are presented. The level of damage is determined by analyzing the virgin material of the same grade. The focus of presented investigation is on the experimental J integral determination, where critical values of the J-integral (J(IC)) are compared with the values obtained by using the finite element methods (FEM). FEM model was defined on the basis of experimental conditions and obtained numerical values should confirm our experimental results.

AB  - This paper contains the results of experimental analysis of fatigue endurance of used steel teeth regenerated by hard facing. The cylindrical spur gears were tested and compared with the newly made ones, oiler being regenerated by hard facing with subsequent cementation and quenching. The fatigue testing wider variable amplitude loading was used to determine the duration of operational life through measurement of wear. The obtained results demonstrated the impact of hard facing methods on gear endurance in operation. In the test on regenerated gears it was discovered that initial pits appeared almost simultaneously for different facing materials and a bit earlier than in tests on newly made ones, despite their considerably higher pitting rate. Apart from that, the tested operational lives of regenerated and newly-made gears were approximately equal and much longer than predicted.

AB  - From a fracture mechanics point of view on welded joints, it is assumed that the welded joint is pre-cracked such as that the fatigue life of the pre-cracked structure is then determined by the period of crack growth under variable load. Experimental data obtained by testing provide a substantial basis for a better understanding and an explanation of the phenomenon of material fatigue. Low cycle fatigue (LCF) occurs during the process of charging and discharging of reactors, pressure vessels and pipelines; the fatigue can be accelerated by an additional negative effect of temperature variation and the aggressive effect of the media contained inside the vessel, and during the exploitation of the equipment in the processing industry.
In the present paper the results are presented of J-integral measurements at LCF of a low-alloyed high strength steel (HSLA) weld metal used in the submerged arc welding process in the manufacture of pressure vessels.
AB  - U zavarenim spojevima, sa gledišta mehanike loma, se pretpostavlja prisustvo prslina, gde se onda vek s obzirom na zamor takvih konstrukcija sa prslinama procenjuje vremenom rasta prsline pod promenljivim opterećenjem. Eksperimentalni podaci dobijeni ispitivanjem pružaju značajnu osnovu za bolje razumevanje i objašnjenje fenomena zamora materijala. AB  - Istraživanje uzroka pojave prslina u zavarenim spojevi-ma je pokazalo da zaostali naponi doprinose otkazu rotornih bagera SRs 1300.26/5 + VR ± 10 u eksploataciji. Izvedena su ispitivanja radi karakterizacije zavarenih spojeva (hemijski sastav, zatezne osobine, tvrdoća i udarna žilavost čelika, elektroda i zavarenih spojeva) i ocene sklonosti ka pojavi prslina. Na osnovu teorijske analize radnih i kritičnih napona napravljen je model zavarene konstrukcije rotora bagera i određena su kritična mesta za merenje deformacija mernim trakama. Utvrđeni su zaostali naponi usled zavarivanja i radni naponi za različite režime rada rotornog bagera i analiziran njihov uticaj na otkaze u eksploataciji. .
AB  - The investigation of welded joint cracking revealed that residual stresses contribute to the failure of bucket wheel excavator SRs 1300.26/5 + VR ± 10 in exploitation. Testing for welded joints characterization (chemical com-position, tensile properties, hardness and impact toughness of steel, electrodes and welded joints) and susceptibility to cracking assessment had been performed. Based on theoretical analysis of working and critical stresses, a model of bucket wheel excavator welded structure was developed and critical locations for strain gauge measurements were determined. Welding residual stresses were assessed as well as working stresses for different operating regimes of excavator and their effects on service failures. .

AB  - U radu su analizirani modifikovana REI metoda i mogućnost njene primene na zavarene spojeve tankih cilindričnih ljuski, ne uzimajući u obzir specifičnost zavarenih spojeva (heterogenost strukture, zaostale napone i geometrijske nepravilnosti), a sve sa ciljem dobijanja dovoljno tačne i jednostavne inženjerske procedure za određivanje sila rasta prsline (SRP) u zavarenim spojevima u kojima su prisutni zaostali naponi i geometrijske nepravilnosti. U radu su prikazane modifikacije radi uprošćenja REI metode i mogućnosti izrade odgovarajućeg programa u cilju brže primene procedure.
AB  - The modified REI method and possibility of its application to the welded joints of this cylindrical shells have been analyzed in the paper, without taking into consideration specificity of welded joints (heterogenity of structure, residual stresses and geometric irregularities), in order to obtain quite correct and simple engineering procedures for determination of crack grow forces in welded joints in which there are residual stresses and geometric irregularities. The modifications for REI method simplification and possibilities of producing suitable program in order to speed up application of procedure have been reviewed in the paper.

AB  - Prikazan je proračun parametara mehanike loma za površinsku prslinu primenom modela niza opruga. Korišćena je Kingova metoda za određivanja otvaranja usta i vrha prsline, na osnovu čega je određen i J integral za idealno plastične materijale. Ukazano je na neke probleme u primeni ove metoda i moguće modifikacije za njihovo prevazilaženje. Takođe je ukazano i na mogućnosti rešavanja problema kao što su zaostali naponi i geometrijske nepravilnosti, koji mogu značajno da utiču na ponašanje zavarenih spojeva.
AB  - Evaluation of fracture mechanics parameters for surface cracks using line spring model has been shown. King's method for crack mouth and tip displacement evaluation was applied, on basis of what the J integral for perfectly plastic materials was determined. Some problems in application of King's method are pointed out, as well as possible modifications of this method for their solution. Possibilities to solve the problems such as residual stresses and geometry imperfections, which can significantly affect welded joint behavior, are also introduced and analyzed.
