Optimization of BLDC motor/propeller matching in the design of small UAVs

AB  - The need for small and micro unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for use in military as well as civil applications is larger than ever before with a high probability for a growing demand in the future. The large variety of possible implementations and applications of these vehicles contributed to a lot of different designs and concept solutions. While these designs often vary in regards to their aerodynamics and construction, most of them use a DC electric motor paired with a propeller as means of propulsion. This is especially emphasized in recent years due to the fact that BLDC motors have achieved levels of very high power density. In this paper commercially available off-the-shelf BLDC motors in combination with commercially available off-the-shelf propellers are considered. Optimization algorithm is used in order to determine the optimal match of BLDC motor and propeller which gives the highest efficiency of the complete propulsion system for different flight conditions.

Aerodynamic characteristics of low reynolds number airfoils

AB  - Assessment of airfoil aerodynamic characteristics is essential part of any optimal airfoil design procedure. This paper illustrates rapid and efficient method for determination of aerodynamic characteristics of an airfoil, which is based on viscous-inviscid interaction. Inviscid flow is solved by conformal mapping, while viscous effects are determined by solving integral boundary layer equations. Displacement thickness is iteratively added to the airfoil contour by alternating inviscid and viscous solutions. With this approach efficient method is developed for airfoil design by shape perturbations. The procedure is implemented in computer code, and calculation results are compared with results of XFOIL calculations and with experiment. Eppler E387 low Reynolds number airfoil and soft stall S8036 airfoil are used for verification of developed procedure for Reynolds numbers 200000, 350000, and 500000. Calculated drag polars are presented in this paper and good agreement with experiment is achieved as long as small separation is maintained. Calculated positions of laminar separation, reattachment, and turbulent separation closely follow experimental measurement. The calculations are performed in relatively short time, which makes this approach suitable for low Reynolds number airfoil design.

Numerical analysis of lean premixed combustor fueled by propane-hydrogen mixture

AB  - A numerical investigation of combustion of propane-hydrogen mixture in a swirl premixed micro gas turbine combustor is presented. The effects of hydrogen addition into propane on temperature distribution in the combustor, reaction rates of propane and hydrogen and NO, emissions for different equivalence ratios and swirl numbers are given. The propane-hydrogen mixture of 90/10% by volume was assumed. The numerical results and measurements of NO emissions for pure propane are compared. Excellent agreements are found for all equivalence ratios and swirl numbers, except for the highest swirl number (1.13). It is found that the addition of hydrogen into propane increases NO, emission. On the other hand, the increase of swirl number and the decrease of equivalence ratio decrease the NO, emissions.

AB  - Rad izlaže realizovanu 3D CFD simulaciju faze paljenja gasnog gorionika sa ciljem određivanja maksimalne temperaturske razlike koja u njemu izaziva maksimalne termičke napone. Proces je nestacionaran. Simulacije je realizovana za minimalnu snagu jer je taj slučaj kritičan.
AB  - This paper presents performed 3D CFD simulation of burner start-up and finding the maximal temperature difference through mantle thickness which induces maximal thermal stress. The process is unsteady, beginning from the mantle room temperature and ending with its steady state condition. The behavior of burner is simulated for minimal thermal power, i.e., for critical conditions from the mantle temperature standpoint.

AB  - The effects of active separation control by steady blowing jets were investigated numerically on three different examples: subsonic flow past Aerospatiale A airfoil at 13 degrees angle-of-attack, transonic flow past NACA 0012 airfoil at 4 degrees angle-of attack, and transonic flow in linear compressor/turbine cascade. Performed analyses are two-dimensional, flow is turbulent (or transitional) while fluid is viscous and compressible. Jets are positioned along the suction sides of the foils, the first one being located just upstream of the separation point, and modeled by source terms added to flow equations. Several different jet diameters and intensities are investigated. As the choice of turbulence model affects the final solution of Reynolds equations, turbulence is modeled by four different models: Spalart-Allmaras, realizable k-epsilon, k-omega SST, and gamma-Re-theta, and a comparison of obtained results is performed. Goals of the study include definition of an adequate numerical setting that enables sufficiently correct simulation of the problems in question as well as evaluation of the possible increase in aerodynamic performances. Lift coefficients, lift-to-drag ratios or relative pressure differences are improved for all controlled cases.

Influence of selected turbulence model on the optimization of a class-shape transformation parameterized airfoil

AB  - An airfoil was parameterized using the class-shape transformation technique and then optimized via genetic algorithm. The aerodynamic characteristics of the airfoil were obtained with the use of a CFD software. The automated numerical technique was validated using available experimental data and then the optimization procedure was repeated for few different turbulence models. The obtained optimized airfoils were then compared in order to gain some insight on the influence of the different turbulence models on the optimization result.

AB  - Numerička analiza izolovanog, reprezentativnog glavnog rotora helikoptera izvršena je u komercijalnom softverskom paketu ANSYS FLUENT 16.2. Generalno, strujna slika oko rotora je nestacionarna, trodimenzionalna, složena i vrtložna. Takve simulacije zahtevaju značajne proračunske resurse. Uticaj zemlje, koji poboljšava aerodinamičke performanse rotora, predstavlja dodatni izazov pri numeričkom modeliranju. U ovom radu strujno polje je izračunato Navije-Stoksovim jednačinama osrednjenim Rejnoldsovom statistikom (RANS). Rotaciono kretanje uzeto je u obzir primenom dva različita pristupa: 'Frame of reference' i 'Sliding mesh'. Izvršeno je poređenje dobijenih rezultata sa vrednostima jednostavnijih modela kao što su model zasnovan na zakonima održanja (MT) i kombinovani model segmenta lopatice (BEMT). Rezultati su predstavljenu u obliku kontura pritiska, brzine i vrtložnosti kao i vrednostima aerodinamičkih koeficijenata..
AB  - Numerical investigation of an isolated representative helicopter main rotor has been performed in ANSYS FLUENT 16.2. In general, flow field around the rotor is unsteady, three-dimensional, complex and vortical. Such a simulation requires substantial computational resources. Ground effect, which improves the aerodynamic performances of the rotor, represents an additional challenge to numerical modeling. In this study, flow field is computed by Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier- Stokes (URANS) equations. Both Frame of reference and Sliding mesh approaches were employed to model the rotor rotation. Obtained results are compared to results obtained by simpler, sufficiently reliable models such as Momentum Theory (MT) and Blade Element Momentum Theory (BEMT). Presented results include fluid flow visualizations in the form of pressure, velocity and vorticity contours and the values of aerodynamic coefficients.

AB  - Optimalna upotreba čiste i obnovljive energije vetra predstavlja jednu od uvek aktuelnih tema u energetskom sektoru. Kako postoje razne mogućnosti pri odabiru tipa, dimenzija, geometrije, korišćenih materijala itd. vetroturbina, još uvek se dosta napora ulaže u fazi projektovanja ne bi li se obezbedila najveća moguća efikasnost proizvoda tokom njegovog radnog veka. Jedan od najčešćih pristupa pri projektovanju je vršenje optimizacionog postupka nad širokim skupom mogućih rešenja koji rezultuje optimalnim dizajnom u skladu sa definisanim polaznim kriterijumima. Nekoliko različitih višekriterijumskih spregnutih aerodinamičkih i strukturnih optimizacija, kako bez
tako i sa ograničenjima, predstavljeno je ovim radom. One su izvršene nad dva tipa vetroturbina, sa horizontalnom i vertikalnom osom obrtanja, koje se znatno razlikuju po veličini i prikladne su kako za velike tako i za male potrošače. Aerodinamičke performanse vetroturbina procenjene su kombinovanim modelom zasnovanim na teoriji idealnog diska i elementa lopatice. Model je malo prepravljen za slučaj vetroturbina sa vertikalnom osom obrtanja i naziva se Dvostrukim-višestrujnim modelom. Iako je u pitanju jednostavan model, naročito u poređenju sa savremenim metodama proračunske mehanike fluida, pruža zadovoljavajuće rezultate pri stacionarnim režimima rada te je ovde nadograđen strukturnom MKE analizom i implementiran u višekriterijumsku optimizaciju rojem čestica. Izvršene analize su prostorne ili ravanske, dok je fluid smatran viskoznim i nestišljivim. Dostupni eksperimentalni rezultati opstrujavanja aeroprofila su korigovani i korišćeni u proračunima. Korišćeni aerodinamički model verifikovan je kroz poređenje numeričkih rezultata sa eksperimentalnim podacima sličnih vetroturbina. Prateće strukturne analize vršene su nad kompozitnim lopaticama vetroturbina koje trpe proračunata aerodinamička, gravitaciona i inercijalna opterećenja. Za nekoliko kombinacija ulaznih i izlaznih parametara različite višekriterijumske optimizacije su izvršene i upoređene i njihova primena je analizirana. Razmatrani ulazni parametri uključuju: prečnik vetroturbine, dužinu, tetivu i aeroprofil lopatice, debljinu kompozitne ljuske kao i raspored slaganja platana. Ciljne funkcije i ograničenja su: nominalna snaga, minimalna ili optimalna brzina vetra, masa lopatice, ugib na kraju lopatice, kriterijum loma lopatice ili njene sopstvene frekvencije. Pouzdanost i tačnost predstavljene metodologije može se povećati korišćenjem složenijih modela koje je moguće jednostavno implementirati u kod.

AB  - This paper presents results of experimental investigation on elimination of combustion oscillations caused by new low pollution burner which was integrated in a gas heater. The method is known as a passive method, based on introducing the air in the combustion chamber. Since efficiency of the passive method is highly dependent of the way the air is injected, several different methods were investigated and compared. The paper also presents effects on pollution characteristics during its operation in the unstable regime.

Uticaj sastava biogasa na emisiju polutanata mikroturbine sa pilot gorionikom

AB  - Stimulacija korišćenja biogasa, koji predstavlja gorivo dobijeno iz obnovljivih izvora energije, intenzivirala je istraživanja vezana za razvoj i implementaciju različitih tehnika sagorevanja. Optimalna tehnika sagorevanja biogasa bi trebalo da obezbedi stabilno sagorevanje, uz zadovoljavanje sve strožijih ekoloških standarda u širokom dinamičkom opsegu rada. Prisustvo inertne komponente uzrokuje probleme vezane za stabilnost sagorevanja, gubitke energije, kao probleme vezane za emisiju štetnih supstanci. Sastav biogasa može značajno da varira u zavisnosti od načina proizvodnje i korišćene sirovine. Pored toplotne moći, koja se menja promenom sastava bigasa, takođe dolazi i do promena karakteristika sagorevanja, uključujući i emisiju štetnih supstanci. U radu je prikazano eksperimentalno istraživanje uticaja sadržaja ugljendioksida (inertne komponente) na emisiju azotnih oksida i ugljenmonoksida. Istraživanje je vršeno pomoću vihornog gorionika mikroturbine sa pilot gorionikom indukovanjem dva intenzivna vihora, variranjem mogućeg sastava biogasa i koeficijenta viška vazduha, pri nominalnoj snazi 9 kW. Utvrđeno je da sa povećanjem sadržaja ugljendioksida emisija azotnih oksida smanjuje, dok emisija ugljenmonoksida raste u celom opsegu koeficijenata viška vazduha za koje su vršena merenja.
AB  - Stimulation of using biogas, which is a fuel derived from renewable energy sources, has intensified the research, development and implementation of various combustion techniques. Optimal combustion technology should provide a stable combustion meeting ever stricter environmental standards in a wide dynamic range. The presence of inert components cause problems related to the stability of combustion, energy losses, as well as problems related to the emission of harmful substances. The composition of biogas can significantly vary depending on the mode of production and used materials. Combustion of biogas is a very interesting problem, as it is a low calorific value fuel, derived from renewable energy sources. Experimental investigation of combustion of biogas, in order to determine the effect of carbon dioxide content on the emission of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide is presented. It was found that with increasing carbon dioxide content emissions of nitrogen oxides are reduced, while carbon monoxide emissions are increased in the whole range of coefficients of excess air, for which measurements were carried out. The presence of carbondioxide in the fuel reduces the emission of nitrogen oxide by acting on both the basic mechanisms of NOx formation: thermal and prompt. The existence of the inert component in the flammable mixture lead to decreased concentrations of O, OH and CH, and the lowering of the temperature in the reaction zone. The effect of carbon dioxide content on CO emissions is opposite to the impact on NOx emissions, because it is essentially related to its effect temperature reduction, as it is in the case of NOx inhibiting factor, while in the case of CO it is predisposing factor.

Pored toplotne moći, koja se menja promenom sastava bigasa, takođe dolazi i do promena karakteristika sagorevanja, uključujući i emisiju štetnih supstanci. U radu je prikazano eksperimentalno istraživanje uticaja sadržaja ugljendioksida (inertne komponente) na emisiju azotnih oksida i ugljenmonoksida. Istraživanje je vršeno pomoću vihornog gorionika mikroturbine sa pilot gorionikom indukovanjem dva intenzivna vihora, variranjem mogućeg sastava biogasa i koeficijenta viška vazduha, pri nominalnoj snazi 9 kW. Utvrđeno je da sa povećanjem sadržaja ugljendioksida emisija azotnih oksida smanjuje, dok emisija ugljenmonoksida raste u celom opsegu koeficijenata viška vazduha za koje su vršena merenja., Stimulation of using biogas, which is a fuel derived from renewable energy sources, has intensified the research, development and implementation of various combustion techniques. Optimal combustion technology should provide a stable combustion meeting ever stricter environmental standards in a wide dynamic range. The presence of inert components cause problems related to the stability of combustion, energy losses, as well as problems related to the emission of harmful substances. The composition of biogas can significantly vary depending on the mode of production and used materials. Combustion of biogas is a very interesting problem, as it is a low calorific value fuel, derived from renewable energy sources. Experimental investigation of combustion of biogas, in order to determine the effect of carbon dioxide content on the emission of nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide is presented. It was found that with increasing carbon dioxide content emissions of nitrogen oxides are reduced, while carbon monoxide emissions are increased in the whole range of coefficients of excess air, for which measurements were carried out. AB  - U radu su prikazani rezultati eksperimentalnog istraživanja emisije oksida azota (NOx) namenski razvijanog gasnog gorionika sa dva vrtložnika. Ispitivani su uticaj vihornih brojeva, nominalne toplotne snage i keoficijenta viška vazduha. Utvrđeno je da spoljašnji vrtložnik utiče na emisiju NOx samo u uslovima koeficijenta viška vazduha ispod 1,4. Povećanje vihornog broja smanjuje emisuju NOx. Utvrđeno je da unutrašnji vrtložnik i toplotna snaga imaju zanemarljiv uticaj na emisiju NOx. Gorionik je pokazao širok dinamički opseg rada i niske emisije oksida azota i ugljen-monoksida, koje zadovoljavaju najstrožije evropske kriterijume.
AB  - Swirl burners are the most common type of device in wide range of applications, including gas turbine combustors. Due to their characteristics, swirl flows are extensively used in combustion systems because they enable high energy conversion in small volume with good stabilization behavior over the wide operating range. The flow and mixing process generated by the swirl afford excellent flame stability and reduced NOx emissions. Experimental investigation of NOx emission of a purposely designed micro-turbine gas burner with pilot burner is presented. Both burners are equipped with swirlers. Mixtures of air and fuel are introduced separately: through the inner swirler - primary mixture for pilot burner, and through the outer swirler - secondary mixture for main burner. The effects of swirl number variations for the both burners were investigated, including parametric variations of the thermal power and air coefficient. It was found that the outer swirler affects the emission of NOx only for the air coefficient less than 1.4. The increase of swirl number resulted in decrease of NOx emission. The inner swirler and thermal power were found to have negligible effect on emission.

AB  - U radu je prikazano eksperimentalno istraživanje i analiza uticaja sadržaja ugljen-dioksida u biogasu na emisiju azotnih oksida. Sagorevanje biogasa različitog sastava vršeno je vihornim gorionikom sa pilot gorionikom. Rezultati pokazuju da postoji uticaj sadržaja ugljen-dioksida na emisiju azotnih oksida, i to tako da sa povećanjem sadržaja ugljen-dioksida emisija azotnih oksida opada. Ovakav trend je nepromenjen u opsegu koeficijenta viška vazduha (1,2-1,8) za koje je vršeno istraživanje. Utvrđeno je da pri nepromenjenom sastavu biogasa promena toplotne snage nema uticaja na emisiju azotnih oksida.
AB  - Fuels derived from biomass are an alternative solution for the fossil fuel shortage. Usually fuels of this kind are called low calorific value fuels, due to the large proportion of inert components in their composition. The most common is carbon dioxide, and its proportion in biogas can be different, from 10 up to 40%, or even more. The presence of inert component in the composition of biogas causes problems that are related with flame blow off limits. One of the possibilities for efficient combustion of biogas is the combustion in swirling flow including a pilot burner, aimed to expand the borders of stable combustion. This paper presents an analysis of the influence of the carbon dioxide content on nitrogen oxides emissions. Laboratory biogas was used with different content of CO2 (10, 20, 30 and 40%). The investigation was carried out for different nominal powers, coefficients of excess air and carbon dioxide content. With increasing content of carbon dioxide, emission of nitrogen oxides was reduced, and this trend was the same throughout the whole range of excess air, carried out through measurements. Still, the influence of carbon dioxide content is significantly smaller than the influence of excess air. The coefficient of excess air greatly affects the production of radicals which are essential for the formation of nitrogen oxides, O, OH and CH. Also, the results show that the nominal power has no impact on the emission of nitrogen oxides.

The geometry of the premix section, the combustor, and the operating details is given. Air and gaseous propane were used as a fuel mixture. The tests have been performed at atmospheric conditions. The exhaust emissions of NO and CO have been measured as a function of combustor type, equivalence ratio, swirl number, and power and briefly discussed. The obtained data can be useful for the preliminary design of a microturbine combustor and for the validation of computational fluid dynamics modeling of swirling, chemically reacting, one-phase flows.

AB  - Rezultati numeričkih modeliranja prezentovani u ovom radu, deo su istraživanja laboratorije za sagorevanje Mašinskog fakulteta u Beogradu, sprovedenog u okviru FP6 projekta 'FlexHEAT', koji su zajedno realizovale institucije iz šest evropskih zemalja a koji je finansiran od strane Evropske unije (www.flexheat.uni-erlangen.de). U radu su prezentovani uporedni rezultati numeričkih proračuna kojima se simulira sagorevanje goriva na bazi metana (prirodni gas, srpski gas, biogas i sl), a koji su dobijeni korišćenjem eksperimentalno proverenog, kompletnog hemijskog mehanizma GRI 3.0 koji čini 325 hemijskih reakcija i odgovarajućeg veoma redukovanog hemijskog mehanizama, koga čine 2 hemijske reakcije (od kojih je jedna povratna) razvijenog na bazi dvostepenog C.K. Westbrook & F.L. Dryer (WD) modela. Rezultati su dobijeni upotrebom programskog paketa 'ChemKin' i determinišu oblast i mogućnost primene ovako značajno redukovanih hemijskih mehanizama u CFD proračunima, u situacijama kada kompleksnost samog strujanja sa hemijskim reakcijama kroz složene geometrije gorionika i peći ne dozvoljava upotrebu složenijih hemijskih mehanizama.
AB  - The paper presents comparison of the results obtained in numerical research conducted, with the aim to simulate combustion of methane-based fuels like natural gas, Serbian gas, biogas, etc. Presented results were obtained using experimentally verified, full chemical mechanism GRI 3.0, with 325 chemical reactions, and using selected, very reduced chemical mechanism, with only two chemical reactions, based on two-step C.K. Westbrook & F.L. Dryer (WD) model. 'ChemKin' software was used for all numerical simulations of chemical kinetics and 'Fluent' for CFD analysis. The goal was to determine possibilities and application fields of this very reduced chemical mechanism in CFD calculations, especially in cases when flows with chemical reactions through complex geometry of burners and furnaces, disable usage of full mechanisms.

AB  - The effect of combustor type, equivalence ratio, swirl number and power on NOx and CO emissions of a purposely built, lean premixed, laboratory scale model combustor with water cooled walls and center body, which simple geometry imitates combustors found in micro gas turbines, has been experimentally investigated in detail. The geometry of the premix section, combustor and the operating details are given. Air and gaseous propane were used as a fuel mixture. The tests have been performed at atmospheric conditions. The exhaust emissions of NOx and CO have been measured as a function of combustor type, equivalence ratio, swirl number and power and briefly discussed. The obtained data can be useful for the preliminary design of a micro turbine combustor and for the validation of CFD modeling of swirling, chemically reacting, one phase flows.

AB  - An experimental research and analysis of performance of three domestic house hold gas appliances was carried out. The objective of this work, based on the conducted analysis of the research data, was to improve the appliances’ performance, prefer ably through relative simple modifications, in order to satisfy DIN 4702 emissions and efficiency standards when using different fuels, including natural gas, liquefied petroleum gases and lower quality natural gas. This report summarizes details of this work and how the objectives were achieved.

AB  - Prikazani su rezultati eksperimentalnog istraživanja efekta koeficijenta viška vazduha i geometrije sklopa gasni uređaj za domaćinstvo - atmosferski gorionik na emisiju CO i NOx. U cilju poboljšanja emisije izvršene su određene modifikacije geometrije uređaja. Dobijeni rezultati potvrđuju da modifikacije bitno menjaju emisiju CO a znatno manje emisiju NOx u odnosu na referentno stanje. Emisija CO opada do nule a NOxraste ali u srazmerno manjoj meri.
AB  - The paper summarizes experimental research results of the effect of air equivalence ratio and geometry of a domestic gas oven atmospheric burner on CO i NOx emissions. In order to improve emissions modifications of geometry of the appliance were performed. The obtained results confirmed that the modifications strongly affected the CO emission while the NOx emission was affected less when compared with the reference state. The CO emission decreased to zero while the NOx emission showed relatively smaller increase.
