AB  - The aim of this experimental research is to confirm the correctness of the proposed methodology for optimizing atmospheric gas burners. Also, the burner was tested in actual conditions. The object of this experimental optimization is a typical modern atmospheric gas burner for households (required heat output for average households ranges from 8 to 12 kW) to which the proposed methodology will be applied in order to optimize its design characteristics and performance to obtain energy efficient and an environmentally friendly device.

ENRICHMENT OF LOW-CALORIE GASEOUS FUELS WITH HYDROGEN

AB  - The quite certain introduction of hydrogen and mixtures of hydrogen and low calorific value gases (bio-gas and land-fill gas) for the energy needs of modern society reveals a number of open questions related to the problems of applying these fuels in future commercial gas devices and systems. Currently, fuel cells are the only commercialized devices for using hydrogen. In the case of using hydrogen by the combustion method, there are already commercialized gas turbines of high power, while in the case of devices of lower power, manufacturers are still in the research and development phase. Serbia is given the opportunity to be in the process of developing the technology for the application of hydrogen in the energy sector.

AB  - U energetski intenzivnim industrijama kao što su livnice, čeličane, fabrike hemijske industrije, rafinerije i dr. značajne količine otpadne toplote se generišu u obliku rashladne vode čija temperatura je uobičajeno u opsegu od 25 do 40°C. U slučajevima kada se otpadni fluidni tokovi niske temperature ne mogu primeniti direktno u procesu, postoji mogućnost i tehnička rešenja da se oni iskoriste primenom toplotnih pumpi. U ovom slučaju otpadna toplota sa niskim toplotnim potencijalom (niskom eksergijom) iz raznih industrijskih procesa koristi se, posredstvom toplotne pumpe, kao toplotni izvor za zagrevanje vode za potrebe grejanja objekata, pripremu sanitarne tople vode, zagrevanje različitih procesnih voda i sl. U ovom radu prikazani su rezultati tehno-ekonomske analize koja je sprovedena za primer toplotne pumpe koja koristi otpadnu toplotu iz industrijskih procesa. U radu je razmotreno nekoliko različitih izvora otpadne toplote sa različitim karakteristikama u pogledu raspoloživog protoka fluida, temperature i vremenske raspoloživosti izvora otpadne toplote. Rezultati analize pokazali su da je primena toplotnih pumpi sa nominalnom toplotnom snagom od 295 i 2x390 kW, koje rade u režimu temperature 80/30°C i 80/35°C pri stepenu korisnosti od 3,2 i 3,3, u konkretnom slučaju opravdana, pri čemu je prost period povrata investicije u opsegu od 2,3 do 6 godina.

AB  - This paper presents a procedure for simulating the accelerated aging process of a material during the operation of an atmospheric burner used in a gas heater for domestic use. The test was performed under the conditions of the prescribed controlled high temperature, for defined intervals of the expected heat load, when using the prescribed gaseous fuel, with continuous monitoring of the surface temperature of the flame ports surface.

AB  - The paper presents results of theoretical numerical research dealing with CO and NOx emission performed in the process of optimization of the performance of low-power atmospheric burners. The theoretical part of this paper, whose main goals were better understanding of the complex issues of methodology and establishment of performance prediction and optimization of low-power atmospheric gas burner included numerical variation of independent parameters, such as burner geometry, the coefficients of primary and secondary air and different gaseous fuels including biogas. The findings of theoretically obtained performance prediction and optimization of atmospheric burners were experimentally investigated in purpose built test rigs for a number of variable parameters. The obtained results fully justified the proposed models of performance prediction and burner optimization.

AB  - Kompozitne ploče sa saćastom ispunom se sve više koriste pri izradi primarnih vazduhoplovnih struktura. Ovi materijali koriste se pri konstrukciji oplata trupova letelica, centralnih i spoljnih torzionih kutija krila, oplata pogonskih grupa, vrata stajnih trapova, komandnih površina kao što su spojleri i eleroni. Da bi se odredila polja napona i deformacija opterećene strukture neophodno je poznavanje svih elastičnih koeficijenata. U ovom radu, metod za određivanje svih potrebnih elastičnih koeficijenata ispune i ploča je predstavljen. Koristeći se eksperimentalno dobijenim rezultatima za papir NOMEH (tip 410 ) kao i fenolnu matricu materijalni model je predstavljen, izrađen je model konačnih elemenata kompozitne ploče sa saćastom ispunom i numerički je simuliran test savijanja u tri tačke. Dobijeni rezultati upoređeni su sa rezultatima dobijenim eksperimentom. Primećeno je dobro slaganje između predloženog modela materijala i eksperimentalno dobijenih vrednosti.
AB  - Honeycomb core composite plates are becoming more important in the construction of primary aerospace structures. Nowadays, these types of materials are used for construction of fuselage skins, central and outer wing boxes, engine tail cones, landing gear doors, command surfaces like spoilers and ailerons etc. To determine the stress strain field in loaded honeycomb plates elastic coefficients are required. In the present work, a method for determining all required elastic coefficients for the core and plates is presented. Using experimentally obtained values for Nomex paper (type 410) and phenolic resin material model is presented and FEA model of composite plate with honeycomb core is created and three point bend test is simulated. Numerically obtained stress and strain values are compared to the experiment. Good agreement between proposed material model and experimentally obtained values is observed.

AB  - One of the main objectives in research and development of resin based cements (RBCs) is to enhance their clinical longevity and ease of use. In spite of the undeniable technological advances introduced in the last few decades, the polymerization shrinkage i.e. strain that accompanies the chain-growth polymerization of dimethacrylate monomers remains one of the major concerns for the clinical performance of composite restorations. Also, RBCs can produce a considerable amount of heat, due to the light energy from the curing lights and exothermic reaction of polymerization. The purpose of this study was to determine the temperature changes during the photo-polymerization using thermocouples and to measure strain field of the self-etching, self-adhesive RBC, Maxcem Elite (Kerr, Orange, CA, USA) (empty set5 x 1 mm - Group I and empty set5 x 2 mm - Group II) using experimental technique, 3D Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method. Digital images were recorded immediately after photo-polymerization of the samples with a LED-curing unit for 20 s, according to manufacturer's recommendation. Vickers microhardness was determined after photo-polymerization and after 24 h. Temperature curves for both groups indicated similar patterns but the peak temperature of Group II was significantly higher compared to peak temperature of Group I. DIC showed that peripheral zone of the samples had the highest strain values in both groups. Group I indicated significantly higher values of hardness. All the results were material-dependent and probably correlated to the composition of each material, which is not fully disclosed by the manufacturers.

AB  - An experimental research of lean premixed flame in a swirl burner is performed using CH* chemiluminescence imaging. The images of flame are acquired and the flame structure is investigated. The position of flame front, represented by the area with highest rate of exothermic chemical reactions, is deduced from the acquired images. To identify the flame front using two dimensional images, a method of image tomography is applied. A tomography of the images is numerically performed using an in-house developed numerical Abel transform. It is found that flame tomography enables precise location of flame front in turbulent flows. The tomography research is compared and analyzed with the numerical results of the same burner.

AB  - Utilization of hydrocarbon gaseous fuels, such as biogas, landfill gas and others, is a valuable contribution to sustainable energy production and climate changing control. The presence of CO2 in these gases decreases heat of combustion, flame temperature, flame speed and can induce flame blow-off and combustion instabilities. In order to better understand the problem, flame geometry and location was investigated using chemiluminescence (CH*) imaging technique. Combustion took place in a purposely built, lean, premixed, unconfined swirl burner, fueled by methane and propane diluted with CO2. The fuel type, air-to-fuel equivalence ratio and CO2 content were chosen as the independent variables. The CH* imaging by means of a commercial CCD camera, fitted with an optical filter, was used for flame investigation. The analysis of images showed that the CH* emission intensity, flame geometry and location were remarkably affected by the fuel type and the air-to-fuel equivalence ratio, while the CO2 dilution was of minor importance.

The effects of hydrogen addition into propane on temperature distribution in the combustor, reaction rates of propane and hydrogen and NO, emissions for different equivalence ratios and swirl numbers are given. The propane-hydrogen mixture of 90/10% by volume was assumed. The numerical results and measurements of NO emissions for pure propane are compared. Excellent agreements are found for all equivalence ratios and swirl numbers, except for the highest swirl number (1.13). It is found that the addition of hydrogen into propane increases NO, emission. On the other hand, the increase of swirl number and the decrease of equivalence ratio decrease the NO, emissions.

AB  - The results of experimental investigation of pulverized coal combustion process with the aim to improve energy efficiency of an industrial steam boiler are presented in the paper. The investigation included measurement of combustion process parameters in four typical operating conditions, from minimum to maximum steam boiler load, and visualization of combustion process by using the camera with thermal imaging sensor. Several organizational and technical measures to improve energy efficiency of the industrial steam boiler are proposed and discussed in the paper. The measures are evaluated in terms of a possible reduction in the coal consumption and CO2 emissions.

AB  - This paper deals with methods for calculation of potentials of waste heat generated in paper/board production process. For that purpose, the material and heat balance of the cardboard machine at Umka Cardboard Mill has been determined. Field measurements were conducted in order to define the unknown values of process parameters used for calculation in the balance equations and modelling. The focus was given to the cardboard drying section, which consumes most of the energy supplied to the machine. Additional aim of the work presented in the paper was to evaluate the specific energy consumption and the thermal efficiency of all individual energy units within the machine's drying section. The results indicate two main sources of waste heat: waste heat released to the atmosphere with the discharge air from the present waste heat recovery system (14,380 kW), and waste heat released in the hall from the machine and extracted by the hall ventilation system (4,430 kW). Waste heat from both sources is characterized by fairly low temperatures 58-75°C and fairly high moisture content (30-40 g/kg). The specific heat consumption and specific steam consumption (consumption per tonne of produced cardboard) of the machine was 1,490 kWh/t and 1.4 t/t, respectively. The thermal efficiency of drying section and coating drying section was 55.6% and 33.6%, respectively. All these figures imply necessity for further waste heat utilization with the aim of improving the efficiency of energy use.

AB  - U radu su prikazani rezultati eksperimentalnog istraživanja emisije oksida azota (NOx) namenski razvijanog gasnog gorionika sa dva vrtložnika. Ispitivani su uticaj vihornih brojeva, nominalne toplotne snage i keoficijenta viška vazduha. Utvrđeno je da spoljašnji vrtložnik utiče na emisiju NOx samo u uslovima koeficijenta viška vazduha ispod 1,4. Povećanje vihornog broja smanjuje emisuju NOx. Utvrđeno je da unutrašnji vrtložnik i toplotna snaga imaju zanemarljiv uticaj na emisiju NOx. Gorionik je pokazao širok dinamički opseg rada i niske emisije oksida azota i ugljen-monoksida, koje zadovoljavaju najstrožije evropske kriterijume.
AB  - Swirl burners are the most common type of device in wide range of applications, including gas turbine combustors. Due to their characteristics, swirl flows are extensively used in combustion systems because they enable high energy conversion in small volume with good stabilization behavior over the wide operating range. The flow and mixing process generated by the swirl afford excellent flame stability and reduced NOx emissions. Experimental investigation of NOx emission of a purposely designed micro-turbine gas burner with pilot burner is presented. Both burners are equipped with swirlers. Mixtures of air and fuel are introduced separately: through the inner swirler - primary mixture for pilot burner, and through the outer swirler - secondary mixture for main burner. The effects of swirl number variations for the both burners were investigated, including parametric variations of the thermal power and air coefficient. It was found that the outer swirler affects the emission of NOx only for the air coefficient less than 1.4. The increase of swirl number resulted in decrease of NOx emission. The inner swirler and thermal power were found to have negligible effect on emission.

AB  - U radu je prikazano eksperimentalno istraživanje i analiza uticaja sadržaja ugljen-dioksida u biogasu na emisiju azotnih oksida. Sagorevanje biogasa različitog sastava vršeno je vihornim gorionikom sa pilot gorionikom. Rezultati pokazuju da postoji uticaj sadržaja ugljen-dioksida na emisiju azotnih oksida, i to tako da sa povećanjem sadržaja ugljen-dioksida emisija azotnih oksida opada. Ovakav trend je nepromenjen u opsegu koeficijenta viška vazduha (1,2-1,8) za koje je vršeno istraživanje. Utvrđeno je da pri nepromenjenom sastavu biogasa promena toplotne snage nema uticaja na emisiju azotnih oksida.
AB  - Fuels derived from biomass are an alternative solution for the fossil fuel shortage. Usually fuels of this kind are called low calorific value fuels, due to the large proportion of inert components in their composition. The most common is carbon dioxide, and its proportion in biogas can be different, from 10 up to 40%, or even more. The presence of inert component in the composition of biogas causes problems that are related with flame blow off limits. One of the possibilities for efficient combustion of biogas is the combustion in swirling flow including a pilot burner, aimed to expand the borders of stable combustion. This paper presents an analysis of the influence of the carbon dioxide content on nitrogen oxides emissions. Laboratory biogas was used with different content of CO2 (10, 20, 30 and 40%). The investigation was carried out for different nominal powers, coefficients of excess air and carbon dioxide content. With increasing content of carbon dioxide, emission of nitrogen oxides was reduced, and this trend was the same throughout the whole range of excess air, carried out through measurements. Still, the influence of carbon dioxide content is significantly smaller than the influence of excess air. The coefficient of excess air greatly affects the production of radicals which are essential for the formation of nitrogen oxides, O, OH and CH. Also, the results show that the nominal power has no impact on the emission of nitrogen oxides.

AB  - Rezultati numeričkih modeliranja prezentovani u ovom radu, deo su istraživanja laboratorije za sagorevanje Mašinskog fakulteta u Beogradu, sprovedenog u okviru FP6 projekta 'FlexHEAT', koji su zajedno realizovale institucije iz šest evropskih zemalja a koji je finansiran od strane Evropske unije (www.flexheat.uni-erlangen.de). U radu su prezentovani uporedni rezultati numeričkih proračuna kojima se simulira sagorevanje goriva na bazi metana (prirodni gas, srpski gas, biogas i sl), a koji su dobijeni korišćenjem eksperimentalno proverenog, kompletnog hemijskog mehanizma GRI 3.0 koji čini 325 hemijskih reakcija i odgovarajućeg veoma redukovanog hemijskog mehanizama, koga čine 2 hemijske reakcije (od kojih je jedna povratna) razvijenog na bazi dvostepenog C.K. Westbrook & F.L. Dryer (WD) modela. Rezultati su dobijeni upotrebom programskog paketa 'ChemKin' i determinišu oblast i mogućnost primene ovako značajno redukovanih hemijskih mehanizama u CFD proračunima, u situacijama kada kompleksnost samog strujanja sa hemijskim reakcijama kroz složene geometrije gorionika i peći ne dozvoljava upotrebu složenijih hemijskih mehanizama.
AB  - The paper presents comparison of the results obtained in numerical research conducted, with the aim to simulate combustion of methane-based fuels like natural gas, Serbian gas, biogas, etc. Presented results were obtained using experimentally verified, full chemical mechanism GRI 3.0, with 325 chemical reactions, and using selected, very reduced chemical mechanism, with only two chemical reactions, based on two-step C.K. Westbrook & F.L. Dryer (WD) model. 'ChemKin' software was used for all numerical simulations of chemical kinetics and 'Fluent' for CFD analysis. The goal was to determine possibilities and application fields of this very reduced chemical mechanism in CFD calculations, especially in cases when flows with chemical reactions through complex geometry of burners and furnaces, disable usage of full mechanisms.

abstract = "Rezultati numeričkih modeliranja prezentovani u ovom radu, deo su istraživanja laboratorije za sagorevanje Mašinskog fakulteta u Beogradu, sprovedenog u okviru FP6 projekta 'FlexHEAT', koji su zajedno realizovale institucije iz šest evropskih zemalja a koji je finansiran od strane Evropske unije (www.flexheat.uni-erlangen.de). U radu su prezentovani uporedni rezultati numeričkih proračuna kojima se simulira sagorevanje goriva na bazi metana (prirodni gas, srpski gas, biogas i sl), a koji su dobijeni korišćenjem eksperimentalno proverenog, kompletnog hemijskog mehanizma GRI 3.0 koji čini 325 hemijskih reakcija i odgovarajućeg veoma redukovanog hemijskog mehanizama, koga čine 2 hemijske reakcije (od kojih je jedna povratna) razvijenog na bazi dvostepenog C.K. Westbrook & F.L. Dryer (WD) modela. Rezultati su dobijeni upotrebom programskog paketa 'ChemKin' i determinišu oblast i mogućnost primene ovako značajno redukovanih hemijskih mehanizama u CFD proračunima, u situacijama kada kompleksnost samog strujanja sa hemijskim reakcijama kroz složene geometrije gorionika i peći ne dozvoljava upotrebu složenijih hemijskih mehanizama., The paper presents comparison of the results obtained in numerical research conducted, with the aim to simulate combustion of methane-based fuels like natural gas, Serbian gas, biogas, etc. Presented results were obtained using experimentally verified, full chemical mechanism GRI 3.0, with 325 chemical reactions, and using selected, very reduced chemical mechanism, with only two chemical reactions, based on two-step C.K. Westbrook & F.L. Dryer (WD) model. 'ChemKin' software was used for all numerical simulations of chemical kinetics and 'Fluent' for CFD analysis. The goal was to determine possibilities and application fields of this very reduced chemical mechanism in CFD calculations, especially in cases when flows with chemical reactions through complex geometry of burners and furnaces, disable usage of full mechanisms.",
