AB - Using vehicles and other mobile systems to transport passengers and goods, approximately 25% of Europe's greenhouse gases are generated. At the same time, many research papers, published by researchers and students, promote the use of electric vehicles as zero-emission vehicles. Given that, more broadly, the emission of electric vehicles is higher, especially in countries where electricity is obtained by burning coal, the use of internal-combustion engines is still dominant. There are other reasons for using an internal-combustion engine, such as already developed pumping station infrastructure, which is not the case when recharging electric vehicles. Improvements in engine design contribute to meet the regulations relating to the fuel consumption and toxic gas emissions. This refers to the use of alternative fuels, improving the combustion process, and increasing efficiency (efficiency coefficient) by reducing losses. The research is focused on the problem of friction and wear in internal combustion engines and reciprocating air compressors, as auxiliary devices on engines. For that purpose, construction of the reciprocating air compressor in motor vehicles was redesigned. The paper presents the characteristic test results of material used to strengthen liner of the aluminum cylinder. Specifically, a method for testing the performance characteristics of a single-cylinder reciprocating compressor inside of an experimental installation for compressed air supply has also been proposed.

AB - Today's times are characterized by increased mobility of people, primarily by road traffic. The number of zones where roadworks are carried out is continuously increasing, so the number of risky situations in which drivers can find themselves is also increasing. Roadwork zones represent high-risk conditions in traffic, both for road users and construction workers. This paper presents and analyses data on road crashes and their consequences in roadwork zones, including the analysis of four typical roadwork situations that could pose a risk for traffic participants. The obtained results can be used to prevent similar accidents in the future in road construction zones.

AB - It is generally recognized that sight is the most important sensory perception used to collect information while driving, comprising up to 90% of the total information collected. It is of great importance that those objects and stimuli that must be perceived to drive safe, are the ones that will be the first to be observed and located by the driver. It is especially demanding when objects are perceived using mirrors in the vehicle. For the above reasons, an experimental study was carried out, which includes the evaluation of the distance with/without rear-view mirrors in the vehicle. The results show the difference in the estimation of distances when a rear-view mirror is used and when the rear-view mirror is not used. The test objects were various colors, so the results involve also this aspect of perception. The above results play an important role in improving the safety of all road users.

AB - Dynamic friction coefficient (COF) of the reciprocating sliding contact of the conventional UHMWPE, was investigated in four different environments (dry contact; distilled water; pure Ringer's solution and with PMMA particles), at five values of low normal load (0.1-1 N) and three values of sliding speed (4 - 12 mm/s). Significant differences of COF values occurred at the lowest load (0.1 N), whereas sliding speed did not influence COF values. Addition of PMMA particles in Ringer's solution produced significant increase of COF values, especially at the lowest load of 0.1 N. For the dry contact and the highest load (1 N), steady state was reached shortly after the beginning of the test and friction coefficient had uniform behaviour. In the case of wet environment and the lowest load, steady state was not reached and the friction coefficient exhibited non-reproducible random behaviour. According to the Hertz theory, 0.5 N load corresponded to the elastic stress of 48.7 MPa, thus surpassing the values of the elastic limits, hardness and true yield stress of the UHMWPE, and the behaviour of the friction coefficient was drastically different below and above this load value. It can be assumed that below the 0.5 N load, viscoelastic response, accompanied with plastic deformation is dominant, with transition to mainly plastic deformation for the higher loads.

AB - This paper presents microstructural properties and damage behaviour of a vacuum mixed poly(methyl metacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement, during the sliding contact with AISI 316L stainless steel, under micro-loads. Influence of the Ringer's solution on the wear was analysed in comparison to dry contact. The variation of load did not produce any significant change of the wear factor while the increase in the sliding speed induced significant increases in the wear factor, more pronounced in the case of dry sliding. The obtained wear factors were in average higher for the sliding in Ringer's solution than those obtained under dry conditions. Significant fragmentation of the worn tracks, of irregular shapes with broken edges, was observed, slightly more pronounced for the dry contact. Many cavities and voids were formed on the wear track surface, but they did not extend into the bulk material. Higher loads produced more uniform and less fragmented wear tracks. Abrasive, adhesive wear and plastic deformation grooves were observed, as well as fatigue and erosive wear. Fatigue cracks developed in the direction normal to sliding. Network of fine craze cracks was exhibited on the surface of wear tracks, especially pronounced in the case of dry sliding. These results are important since they contribute to understanding the sites of crack initiation, and development mechanisms on the surface of PMMA bone cements, also including synergistic effects of physiological environments pertaining to the non-steady crack and craze behaviour and crack pattern development in PMMA.

AB - According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates,
186,300 children die annually from road traffic crashes globally,
equivalent to over 500 child deaths daily. Road traffic injuries are
among the top four global causes of death in children between the ages
of 5 and 14 years. Among these deaths, children as pedestrians
accounted for about 38%. To create effective intervention programs,
the research on pedestrian safety risks associated with age is needed.
For these reasons, an experiment was conducted to explore the impact
of using tablet PC devices for learning purposes in the field of traffic
safety. The results indicate that children show better performances
when working with tablet PC, than in simulated traffic situations.
Thus, it is important to take these findings into account when aiming to
train children for road safety.

AB - The corrosion behavior of particulate ZA27/SiCp composites in an aerated sodium chloride solution was studied. The composites were synthesized via compocasting with addition of 1, 3 and 5 wt.% SiC particles in the matrix alloy. Composite samples were immersed for 30 days in the 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution open to the atmospheric air. Surface appearance and microstructure of the composites were examined by means of optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, while corrosion rates of the composites were determined using the weight loss method. It was revealed that SiC particles were not influenced by corrosion. General uniform corrosion occurred in the composite matrices, mainly in the region of the η phase. Local corrosion was noticed in micro-cracks and near clusters of particulate reinforcements. Results of microstructural examinations and immersion test indicate a slightly lower corrosion resistance of the ZA27/SiCp composites compared to that of the matrix alloy.

The composites were produced by compo casting technique and then subjected to the thermal treatment (T4 regime). Microstructural examinations were performed after 30-day exposure of thermally treated composites in the sodium-chloride solution. Corrosion processes have occurred in the composite matrix. Corrosion did not affect SiC particles in the composites. The local progress of corrosion in depth of the composite matrix was noticed in micro-cracks. Corrosion resistance of ZA27/SiCp composites was evaluated based on the mass loss of composite samples during the immersion test. It was found that corrosion resistance of the composites decreased with increase in content of SiC particles. The applied thermal treatment had a negative influence on the corrosion resistance of ZA27/SiCp composites.

AB - Hybrid A356/SiCp/Gr(p) composites were produced via compo-casting using the A356 aluminum alloy as the composite matrix, with silicon carbide microparticles (SiCp) and graphite macroparticles (Gr(p)) as reinforcements. The effect of the thixocasting process on the microstructure of a modified A356 alloy (with 0.03 mass% of strontium) was considered. The microstructures of the thixocast A356 alloy and the synthesized composite materials were examined by means of optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The fracture surfaces of the composite matrix and the composites were also analyzed. The thixocast A356 alloy and the composites were subjected to artificial aging after a solution heat treatment. Aging kinetics was followed by hardness measurements. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was applied to reveal the presence of phases formed during artificial aging. The composites reached maximum hardness faster than the thixocast A356 alloy. The time required to attain peak hardness decreases with the increase in the content of particulate reinforcements.

AB - This paper presents tribological characteristics of hybrid composites with aluminium matrix, reinforced with silicon carbide (SiC) and graphite (Gr). Newly formed Al/SiC/Gr hybrid composites are the combination of the two different hybrid materials. Namely, hard particles of silicon carbide increase the hardness and resistance to wear, while soft particles of graphite improve lubrication and reduce friction coefficient and wear. It is possible to obtain Al/SiC/Gr hybrid composites by different methods of casting. Tribological tests show that load, sliding speed, sliding distance, content and size of reinforcement particles influence the size and the type of wear and friction coefficient of Al/SiC/Gr hybrid composites with aluminium matrix.

AB - Three copper-based alloys, i.e. two composites reinforced with Al2O3 particles and fabricated through PM route and Cu-Cr-Zr alloy processed by the vacuum melting and casting technique were the object of this investigation. Light microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with electron X-ray spectrometer (EDS) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were used for microstructural characterization. The ball-on-disc nanotribometer served for wear and friction tests applying low sliding speeds (6, 8 and 10 mm/s) at constant load (1 N). The objective of the paper was to investigate the effect of different processing techniques on microstructure, thermal stability and the tribological characteristics of composites and copper ingot alloy. Nano-sized Al2O3 particles (less than 100 nm in size) are present not only in the copper matrix of Cu-2.5 wt.% Al composite, obtained by internal oxidation, but they are also formed at the grain boundaries preventing the grain growth and providing very small grain size. During the high temperature annealing (in the range 300-950 degrees C) composites behaved much better than the ingot alloy. The highest thermal stability showed Cu-2.5 wt.% Al composite. The pinning effect of nano-sized Al2O3 particles prevents the grain growth slowing down recrystallization of this composite up to 900 degrees C. Micro-sized Al2O3 particles in Cu-5 wt.% Al2O3 composite, processed by mechanical annealing, are not effective in preventing dislocation motion and the grain growth, whereas microstructure of Cu-0.4 wt.% Cr-0.08 wt.% Zr ingot alloy was completely recrystallized around 550 degrees C. Cu-2.5 wt.% Al composite showed the best wear resistance, approximately 2.5 times higher than that of Cu-5 wt.% Al2O3 composite. High hardness and nano-sized Al2O3 particles size combined with the fine-grain structure are the main parameters leading to the improved wear resistance of the Cu-2.5Al composite.

High hardness and nano-sized Al2O3 particles size combined with the fine-grain structure are the main parameters leading to the improved wear resistance of the Cu-2.5Al composite.",

AB - Thixocast ZA27 alloy and particulate ZA27/SiCp composites were subjected to artificial aging at 80, 120 and 160 degrees C (T5 regime). Composites with 5 and 10 vol.% SiC particles were produced via the compocasting method. The influence of the aging was investigated using different techniques. Differential scanning calorimetry was performed to reveal the presence of phases created in the thixocast ZA27 alloy and the composites. Microstructures and fracture behavior were examined by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Aging processes in the matrix alloy and composites were followed using hardness measurements. A decrease in the hardness values was noticed with the increase in the aging temperature. At higher temperatures diffusion of zinc atoms from supersaturated phases in the matrix alloy was enhanced, which resulted in faster changes in the hardness. Aging processes in the composites were significantly accelerated compared to the matrix alloy, due to the presence of particulate reinforcements. The maximum in hardness was achieved for shorter time in the ZA27/SiCp composite with higher volume fraction of SiC particles.

AB - The possibility of adhesion/cohesion bond strength evaluation of thick plasma spray coatings with scratch tester, according to the ISO working draft (ISO/WD 27307), was analyzed and compared with the standard test method (ASTM C 633). Four different coatings deposited with atmospheric plasma spraying were used. The results showed that scratch testing could be used as an efficient method for evaluation of thick plasma spray coatings cohesion. It is a relatively easy and quick test method, and for practical application it could be also used as a supplement of some standard test method as a coating characterization and quality control technique.

AB - Continuous wear monitoring during linear reciprocating sliding was investigated. Tribological tests with Ti6Al4V alloy against alumina, at nanotribometer, on microscale, were realised in dry conditions over a range of loads (100-1000mN) and velocities (4-12 mm/s). Wear factors were calculated, for each conducted test, in two different ways. Wear factors calculated according to observed geometry of the worn tracks (according to ASTM G133 standard) were compared to values calculated according to penetration depth parameter continuously recorded by nanotribometer and results were highly correlated. Penetration depth curves and wear factor curves were obtained and analysed. Wear mechanisms based on examinations of worn surfaces by optical microscopy, were analysed in comparison with trends of penetration depth curves. Development of wear mechanism over time was further investigated. The obtained results showed that the wear factor values are strongly influenced by the applied load.

AB - The effects of heat treatment on the microstructure, hardness, tensile properties, and tribological behavior of ZA27 alloy were examined. The alloys were prepared by conventional melting and casting route. The heat treatment of samples included the heating up to 370 A degrees C for 3 or 5 h, quenching in water, and natural aging. Lubricated sliding wear test were conducted on as-cast and heat-treated ZA27 samples using block-on-disc machine. The friction and wear behavior of alloys were tested in contact with steel discs using combinations of three levels of load (10, 30, and 50 N) and three levels of linear sliding speeds (0.26, 0.50, and 1.00 m/s). To determine the wear mechanisms, the worn surfaces of the samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The heat treatment resulted in reduction in the hardness and tensile strength but increase in elongation. The heat-treated alloy samples attained improved tribological behavior over the as-cast ones, under all combinations of sliding speeds and contact loads. The rate of improvement increased with duration of solutionizing process before quenching in water. Obtained tribological results were related to the effects of heat treatment on microstructure changes of alloy.

AB - In the present study, the effect of the Al2O3 particles (average size of 12 mu m, 3 and 10 wt.%) reinforcement on the microstructure and tribological properties of Al-Si alloy (A356) was investigated. Composites were produced by applying compocasting process. Tribological properties of unreinforced alloy and composites were studied, using pin-on-disc tribometer, under dry sliding conditions at different specific loads and sliding speed of 1 m/s. Microhardness measurements, optical microscope and scanning electron microscope were used for microstructural characterization and investigation of worn surfaces and wear debris. During compocasting of A356 alloy, a transformation from a typical dendritic primary alpha phase to a non-dendritic rosette-like structure occurred. Composites exhibited better wear resistance compared with unreinforced alloy. Presence of 3 wt.% Al2O3 particles in the composite material affected the wear resistance only at specific loads up to 1 MPa. The wear rate of composite with 10 wt.% Al2O3 particles was nearly two order of the magnitude lower than the wear rate of the matrix alloy. Dominant wear mechanism for all materials was adhesion, with others mechanisms: oxidation, abrasion and delamination as minor ones.
