AB - The research presented in this paper refers to the possibility to understand the information
presented by symbols, which indicate safety status and possible troubles regarding automobiles and driving. The testing included sixteen symbols, six of which were ISO-verified and recommended symbols. The study included 204 youth respondents. The study used a multidisciplinary, ergonomic approach, based on research of the usability of symbols. The basic task of subjects was to recognize the symbols and to rate their confidence on the five-point scale that they gave exact answers. For each symbol, hypotheses about the proportion of correct answers at the population level were tested, applying the inferential statistics technique. The ISO criterion of 67% successful symbol recognition was adopted as the limit value for the justification of the use of symbols. The test results showed that
eight out of sixteen symbols did not meet this criterion. The results of this research indicate that it is
necessary to take certain measures in order to improve the understanding of the function of symbols on vehicle dashboards. One of the proposed measures consists in the improvement of training courses in driving schools, which from a theoretical but also a practical aspect should include education about symbols on car dashboards, primarily those responsible for informing about the safety status. In addition, a redesign of the symbols that had the lowest recognition rate can be recommended.

AB - Recent years have witnessed an increasing number of electric bicycles on the roads and a rise in the number of road crashes involving e-bicyclists. There are various causes of road crashes involving e-bicyclists. Out of the total number of fatalities in traffic, bicyclists account for 9% in the Republic of Serbia. Road crashes occurring when motor vehicles overtake bicyclists make up 13% of the total number of road crashes involving bicyclists. Having in mind the above-mentioned, an experimental study has been conducted in order to analyze whether the use of helmets and reflective vests, different vehicle categories, and the speed of electric bicycles affect the lateral distance when overtaking e-bicycles. This research analyzed the lateral distance of 1228 vehicles overtaking an e-bicyclist. There are statistically significant differences in the lateral distance when overtaking an e-bicycle regarding helmet use, different vehicle categories overtaking the e-bicycle, and different speeds of the e-bicycle. The results showed that a faster speed of an e-bicycle led to a shorter lateral distance when overtaking it and that SUV drivers (along with motorcycle drivers) had the shortest lateral distance when overtaking e-bicycles.

AB - Today's times are characterized by increased mobility of people, primarily by road traffic. The number of zones where roadworks are carried out is continuously increasing, so the number of risky situations in which drivers can find themselves is also increasing. Roadwork zones represent high-risk conditions in traffic, both for road users and construction workers. This paper presents and analyses data on road crashes and their consequences in roadwork zones, including the analysis of four typical roadwork situations that could pose a risk for traffic participants. The obtained results can be used to prevent similar accidents in the future in road construction zones.

AB - It is generally recognized that sight is the most important sensory perception used to collect information while driving, comprising up to 90% of the total information collected. It is of great importance that those objects and stimuli that must be perceived to drive safe, are the ones that will be the first to be observed and located by the driver. It is especially demanding when objects are perceived using mirrors in the vehicle. For the above reasons, an experimental study was carried out, which includes the evaluation of the distance with/without rear-view mirrors in the vehicle. The results show the difference in the estimation of distances when a rear-view mirror is used and when the rear-view mirror is not used. The test objects were various colors, so the results involve also this aspect of perception. The above results play an important role in improving the safety of all road users.

AB - The research presented in this document addresses the ability of drivers to understand what information has been presented by symbols that are used to indicate certain status of vehicle lights. The concept known as usability can be applied extensively to ergonomic design and testing of a wide range of products and systems, including cars. In order to assess drivers' understanding of what information is exactly presented by symbols that are used to describe the state of the lighting system of an automobile, a usability test was designed. The test included 4 symbols, three of which were ISO-approved symbols. This study of usability of symbols on a sample of drivers showed that understanding of information represented by symbols is relatively low, ranging from 41.93% to 61.29%. Certain statistical tests allow for prognosis results on a population level, using the data based on a sample. For that purpose, we used the Z-test of a sample proportion. Testing of statistical hypotheses yielded even lower values of symbols understanding at the population level, for each tested symbol. Suggestions have been made to improve the usability of this type of symbol.

AB - The safety of children in traffic is a global problem. The education of children is the basis of improving their safety in traffic. However, new times bring new ways of education. For the above reasons, experimental research was carried out in which it examined how the designed traffic playground can be used in the education of children about traffic safety. For research purposes, a traffic playground was designed in a real and virtual environment. 60 children between the ages of 7 and 10 participated in the experiment. The recognition of the elements of design traffic playgrounds, as well as the behavior of children when crossing the street in a virtual and real traffic environment, were examined. Children have a higher percentage of correct answers in the virtual traffic environment than in the real traffic environment.

AB - Societal safety measures that have been used to prevent infections spreading, when too strict or prolonged, can have negative consequences, among which disruption of economy and income or jobs loss are the most severe. Certain research also suggests that the psychological footprint of COVID‐19 probably will be more substantial than the medical footprint. Psychological responses, especially anxiety and fear, are important factors for an individual’s behaviors. COVID stress syndrome is a complex phenomenon involving various types of fears. Fear and anxiety-related behaviors relating to the coronavirus pandemic was assessed with the newly developed multifactorial questionnaire, COVID Stress Scales (CSS). The focus of this study was to examine the relationship, if there any, between employment status and COVID‐19‐related experiences of stress. High perceived stress levels were associated with employment in companies with a majority share of private capital and with being retired, while unemployed participants and employed students seemed to be at least anxious. CSS could be valuable for health practitioners, policymakers and other researchers as a tool for determining who are at higher risk of psychosocial issues, in order to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on mental health and to tailor ergonomics interventions.

AB - The adult ergonomic design principles usually do not apply to children, because their needs, skills,
and expectations differ. The purpose of this study is to explore preschoolers' and primary schoolers' color
perception and memorization in the context of spatial orientation, in order to explore possibilities of
implementation of colors in the design of the school interior. Our experiment involved 80 participants. This
study mainly recruited children aged 5 - 9 years as research participants. After the investigation, we found that:
(1) Children showed the highest accuracy in memorizing the yellow object (87.5 %), while they had
demonstrated the lowest percentage of correct answers when memorizing the blue object (73.8 %); (2) Boys
showed a higher accuracy in the perception of colored objects, compared to girls, for all four used colors; (3)
Older children (third grade) showed better accuracy in memorizing the targeted properties of used test object of
different colors (for all used colors) than younger children. These findings are considered in the context of the
design of school equipment and surrounding.

AB - Buses for city transportation are nowadays used by a large number of citizens throughout the world.
Safety of passengers is one of the main objectives that must be ensured. In connection with this, the interior
design of the bus is one of the main factors that affects passenger safety. In addition, injuries of passengers are
one of the main factors that point to the safety of city buses. However, in cases of injuries of travelers on public
transport buses, safety indicators are based primarily on injuries recorded in some official facilities, such as
hospitals for example. The main assumption in this article is that exist the undocumented injuries of travelers
that can indicate the omissions in city bus design or way of transportation. In this article, it is presented a study
about the undocumented injuries of travelers on city buses. For the purpose of this study, a new questionnaire
was developed, which is intended for the collection of officially undocumented data about injuries of
passengers in vehicles for public transportation. Hypotheses directed to the detection of the existence of
certain factor that especially contributes to the appearance of injuries were tested.

AB - According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates,
186,300 children die annually from road traffic crashes globally,
equivalent to over 500 child deaths daily. Road traffic injuries are
among the top four global causes of death in children between the ages
of 5 and 14 years. Among these deaths, children as pedestrians
accounted for about 38%. To create effective intervention programs,
the research on pedestrian safety risks associated with age is needed.
For these reasons, an experiment was conducted to explore the impact
of using tablet PC devices for learning purposes in the field of traffic
safety. The results indicate that children show better performances
when working with tablet PC, than in simulated traffic situations.
Thus, it is important to take these findings into account when aiming to
train children for road safety.

AB - Children represent a vulnerable population from the standpoint of traffic safety. A modern traffic poses complex and high requirements to all its participants, and among them, particularly to young children. Children have a higher risk of pedestrian injuries. Children experience traffic differently from adults. How do children view the world? What helps them to link with their environment? How do children imagine traffic signs? To address these questions, this study examines how fast the children (between 6 and 10 years of age) react to traffic signs mounted at different heights. The
analysis of the results indicated that there were differences in mean reaction time for traffic signs of different heights. Children best perceive a traffic sign when it is mounted at 1.9 m. The research highlights the importance of ergonomic principles in choosing the appropriate height of traffic signs for children.
