AB - Featured Application Nanoelectromechanical systems and nanorobots can be used to treat cancers associated with the Kv10.1 voltage-gated ion channel activity. The Kv10.1 model was developed by applying the control engineering theory. Nanoelectromechanical systems play the role of a PID regulator. The use of nanoelectromechanical systems or nanorobots offers a new concept for sensing and controlling subcellular structures, such as ion channels. We present here a novel method for mathematical modeling of ion channels based on control system theory and system identification. We investigated the use of nanoelectromechanical devices to control the activity of ion channels, particularly the activity of the voltage-gated ion channel Kv10.1, an important channel in cancer development and progression. A mathematical model of the dynamic behavior of the selected ion channel Kv10.1 in the Laplace (s) domain was developed, which is given in the representation of a transfer function. In addition, we addressed the possibilities of controlling ion channel activity by nanoelectromechanical devices and nanorobots and finally presented a control algorithm for the Kv10.1 as a control object. A use case demonstrates the potential of a Kv10.1 controlled nanorobot for cancer treatment at a single-cell level.

AB - Fatigue crack growth in orthopaedic locking compression plates (LCP), under four-point bending, has been simulated by the extended finite element method (xFEM) to assess LCP optimal geometry in respect to remaining life. Loads corresponded to those occurring in human tibia during gait cycle for different body weights (60, 90 and 120 kg). Experimental investigation consisted of tensile testing and fatigue crack growth rate testing of Ti6Al-4 V alloy, as used for LCP, by standard testing using tensile testing machine and Fractomat, respectively. Results showed that the remaining life of LCPs strongly depend on plate geometry and patient body weight (load).

AB - The mathematical modeling of ion channel kinetics is an important tool for studying the electrophysiological mechanisms of the nerves, heart, or cancer, from a single cell to an organ. Common approaches use either a Hodgkin-Huxley (HH) or a hidden Markov model (HMM) description, depending on the level of detail of the functionality and structural changes of the underlying channel gating, and taking into account the computational effort for model simulations. Here, we introduce for the first time a novel system theory-based approach for ion channel modeling based on the concept of transfer function characterization, without a priori knowledge of the biological system, using patch clamp measurements. Using the shaker-related voltage-gated potassium channel Kv1.1 (KCNA1) as an example, we compare the established approaches, HH and HMM, with the system theory-based concept in terms of model accuracy, computational effort, the degree of electrophysiological interpretability, and methodological limitations. This highly data-driven modeling concept offers a new opportunity for the phenomenological kinetic modeling of ion channels, exhibiting exceptional accuracy and computational efficiency compared to the conventional methods. The method has a high potential to further improve the quality and computational performance of complex cell and organ model simulations, and could provide a valuable new tool in the field of next-generation in silico electrophysiology.

AB - Sodium carbonate is a well-known material for being used as a good sorbent of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and as such has gained increasing importance in environmental protection. In order to enhance its sorption ability, mechanochemical activation of sodium carbonate was carried out in this study while the occurred changes after the activation and the relaxation time in a controlled environment were monitored. Activation was performed in a vibro-mill from 1 to 28 min. Based on the results of specific surface area, obtained by BET, the samples activated for 2 and 7 min were chosen and placed in a moist carbon dioxide atmosphere for 96 h, a period called the relaxation time. Differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyses were applied with the aim of determining the changes that occurred on the activated samples during the relaxation period. The decomposition temperature change of activated Na2CO3 samples, as well as mass loss and conversion level of Na2CO3 to NaHCO3 were monitored depending on activation and relaxation time periods. The conversion reactions of sodium carbonate to sodium bicarbonate under the specified environment of carbon dioxide and moisture were also studied, and the thermodynamic data such are changes in enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs energy at the temperature range of 0-160 degrees C are given.

AB - The effect of elevated and lowered temperatures on the elastic properties of carbon fiber-epoxy composite material was studied using multi-phase unit cell (MPUC) numerical model. Evaluation of the elastic properties of carbon fiber-epoxy composite material is based on the finite element method. Obtained results confirmed that elevated and lowered temperature has noticeable influence on elastic properties of carbon fiber-epoxy composite material. As demonstrated, this fact has considerable influence on accurate evaluation of generated thermal stresses in real laminated composite structures, exposed to extremely high or low operating temperatures.

AB - This research will show the analytical way of determining the remaining life of a welded joint with a fatigue crack initiated in its heat affected zone. The calculation will be divided into two stages, since the fatigue crack propagated through the heat affected zone, and then through the parent material. The analysis will be related to specimens with different fatigue properties taken into account for both regions. These calculations included a number of models, since different crack lengths were used for the heat affected zone and the parent material. There were three pairs of different HAZ vs PM fatigue crack lengths, always with the assumption that the total crack length is 5 mm, due to measuring range of the used measuring foils. The aim of this analysis was to apply method typically used in fracture mechanics in order to determine the number of cycles in a welded joint with an initiated fatigue crack, depending on a number of parameters. Obtained results were then compared to the results from the numerical analysis for the same cases. While the total number of cycles was mostly unaffected by these changes, some noticeable differences were observed between individual welded joint regions in question, the heat affected zone and the parent material.

AB - The purpose of this paper is to present study of creep behaviour of a rotating disc in the presence of load and thickness by using Seth's transition theory. It has been observed that a flat rotating disc made of compressible as well as incompressible material with load E-1 = 10, increases the possibility of fracture at the bore. It Is also shown that a rotating disc of incompressible material and thickness that increases radially experiences higher creep rates at the internal surface in comparison to a disc of compressible material. The model proposed in this paper is used in mechanical and electronic devices. They have extensive practical engineering applications such as in steam and gas turbines, turbo generators, flywheel of internal combustion engines, turbojet engines, reciprocating engines, centrifugal compressors and brake discs.

AB - There are successful and less successful maintenance systems (MS). As a dynamic category, the success of the maintenance function must be taken into consideration both for the present day and the future. This is the reason why it is necessary to continuously evaluate, improve and redesign MS. Business process modelling is a good methodology for this purpose. A business process model basically encompasses a formal description of the concept of the system, evaluation methods and process improvement techniques. This paper presents a concept of MS evaluation by using statistical process control in connection with performance indicators and MS improvement by modelling and simulation system. The maintenance model is used for simulation and experimentation. The simulation helps to visualise, understand, analyse and improve processes. The proposed concept is extendable and could be applied in different MS.

AB - This paper presents nonlinear deformation behaviour of non-homogeneous spherical shell examined under pressure by using Seth's transition theory. It has been seen that for increased material compressibility in thickness direction, the circumferential stress in the spherical shell reaches maximum at the external surface, but is reverse in the case of a deceasing compressibility in the thickness direction. The spherical shell of non-homogeneous material (non-homogeneity increases radially) is on the safer side of design. Hence, the more use of non-homogeneous material (non-homogeneity increases radially) may be beneficial for manufacturing spherical shells as they provide longer service life than shells of homogeneous material under identical conditions.

AB - This paper highlights the changes of polyethylene behaviour during various loading rates as well as the influence of test temperature on the material characteristics. Passive infrared thermography method and a high speed infrared camera were used to observe the temperature changes of the sample surface during the tests. The experimental program was carried out on samples taken from PE80 polyethylene gas pipes with simulated imperfections with bilateral V-notch, U-notch, and central hole. Samples have been tensile tested and the results are correlated with the temperature distribution of the samples surface.

AB - Stress calculation of steam pipeline is presented, focused on the welded joint. Numerical calculation was peiformed using the finite element method to obtain stress distribution in the welded joint made while replacing the valve chamber. Dissimilar materials were used, namely steel 10CrMoV9-10 according to EN 10216-2 for the valve chamber, the rest of steam pipeline was steel X20, whereas the transition piece material was steel X22. Residual stresses were calculated, in addition to design stresses, indicating critical regions and necessity for post-weld heat treatment.

AB - TRIZ methodology provides an opportunity for improving the classical engineering approach based on personal knowledge and experience. This paper presents the application of TRIZ methods for improving vehicle maintenance where special equipment is installed. A specific problem is the maintenance of the periscopes with heating system. Protective glass panels with heating system are rectangular glass elements. Their purpose is to perform mechanical protection of built-in prisms and provide heating of the prisms. Aging and long-term use leads to failure of these elements. The practice requires solutions in order to extend the lifetime of the system. New solution is evaluated by simulation and experiment.

AB - Primitive controllers used in the early version for HVAC systems, like the on-off (Bang-Bang) controller, are inefficient, inaccurate, unstable, and suffer from high-level mechanical wear. On the other hand, other controllers like PI and cascade controllers, overcome these disadvantages but when an offset response (inaccurate response) occurs, power consumption will increase. In order to acquire better performance in the central air-conditioning system, PIP-cascade control is investigated in this paper and compared to the traditional PI and PID, in simulation of experimental data. The output of the system is predicted through disturbances. Based on the mathematical model of air-conditioning space, the simulations in this paper have found that the PIP-cascade controller has the capability of self-adapting to system changes and results in faster response and better performance.

Prednost ove metode nad ostalima je u bržoj obradi podataka, postizanja veće efikasnosti i sniženje troškova projektovanja., This paper presents a mobile system in which are implemented control theory and machine vision in conjunction with theory of integrity and life assessment of welded structures. The technical system is system with two video cameras, by which is provided stereometric vision, to obtain three - dimensional image in real time. The advantage of this method is the faster data processing, archiving greater efficiency and cost reduction design.",

AB - This paper presents measurement of strain using stereometry method. It describes the use of digital stereometry to measure microstrains on the surface. This can be achieved by comparison of the images of point distribution on faced surface at different load levels. The examples present the possibility to measure strain concentration in the vicinity of crack tip on metallic sample. Applying two video cameras and corresponding software the image of strain distribution can be obtained in different forms, in 2D and 3D formats.

AB - In this paper King's line spring model for surface cracks is analyzed and it is shown that interesting relations can be derived starting from analytical expressions of the model. King's model is compared with the line spring model of Rice and Levi. Significant similarities between two models are shown, but King's model extends the application of the approach to elastic-plastic region. FAD based on EPRI approach and SINTAP method are also analyzed.

AB - In this paper the influence of cracks on structural integrity of heterogeneous ferrite-austenite welded joints applying the basic fracture mechanics concept was analyzed. The crack driving force was obtained numerically using King's method, while materials resistance to crack growth was determined experimentally via J-integral and was given as the J-R curve. In order to find out properties of such welded joints, plates made of high alloyed austenite steel were welded to plates made of micro alloyed ferrite steel. The experimental investigation, in combination with the numerically obtained results, enabled reliable estimation of structural integrity of ferrite-austenite welded joints.

AB - Background: According to the fundamental importance of the tracking theory on technical systems (ship servomotor), the main goal of this paper is a further development of the theory and the application of the tracking, especially to the practical tracking concept. Results: The plant under consideration is an electro-pneumatic ship servomotor. This system is often applied as the final control element of a controller in automatic control systems. The correction device for the mentioned plant will be a digital computer. The mentioned control forces the observed plant output to track the desired output value with prespecified accuracy. In this paper the simulation results produced by practical tracking control algorithm on an electro-pneumatic servo system will be presented.

AB - The paper presents the application extent of procedures for measurement deformations on ships. The actual deformation distribution was measured on the surface of the specimen by the optical grating method (OGM) parallel to the CTOD measurements. Displacements are actually measured with two cameras, i.e. stereometric method. The stereometric method for monitoring deformation is presented with an example of application. The deformation of the surface was measured by recording the displacements of the optical marks, and captured in such a way that the 3D coordinates are connected with picture coordinates. Further calculation of the ship deformation gradient is possible by using the theory of large deformations, which allows large plastic deformations as well as rigid ship motion. Further development of research is focused on constant deformation and damage monitoring in order to take full advantage of computer technology.

AB - In situations where the end users have no domain experts, a virtual consultant in a form of a software surrounding based on updated internet technologies may often show to them the procedure to follow in a given situation in a way in which the particular problem can be solved, as well as the alternative approaches to the welding activities. The paper presents current status of the expert system titled "electronic consulting in welding" which has been developed under the Eureka E!3595 project. The first part assumes creation of a so-called content server as a web application used to represent, store, update and distribute the knowledge and multimedia resources from the domain of welding. Two main units of the content server consider questions received from the end users and provide weldability assessment and computation of welding parameters (at the moment, for two welding procedures). Detailed overview of the later unit is given including description of the constitutive modules - from data input to generation of reports and optimization of computed parameters.

AB - This paper describes the use of digital stereometry in measuring micro strains on the surface. This can be achieved by comparing images of point distribution on faced surface at different load levels and thus introduced stresses. The examples present the possibility to measure strain concentration in the vicinity of crack tip on metallic sample and on bone tissue. By applying two video cameras and corresponding software the image of strain distribution can be obtained in different forms, in 2D and 3D formats.
