The development and preliminary validation of the Serbian value lexicon – An archival approach to value measurement

AB  - Values refer to stable beliefs and principles held by individuals, which guide their attitudes, behaviours, and judgments, and play a crucial role in shaping their identities and interactions with others. Studying values in social psychology is important as it provides insights into the motivational forces that drive individuals’ behaviour and decision-making, shaping the dynamics of interpersonal relationships and societal interactions. The aim of this paper is to test the possibility of measuring basic values in the archive and text materials. Based on the Schwartz’s theory of values and earlier work on the value lexicon in English, the Serbian lexicon of values was developed and preliminarily validated on a large-scale Internet-based survey. The lexical co-occurrence of words in the natural language use on the Internet was analysed in order to assess the convergent, discriminant and predictive validity of the lexicon. Lexical cooccurrence analysis showed that the words representing the same values cooccurred significantly more in comparison to the words denoting different values. The pattern of correlations between the values measured in the archive material on the Internet using the value lexicon showed high convergence with the pattern of correlations between the values assessed by the self-reported measures used in the European Social Survey in 2018. The relative prominence of the specific values on the official websites of the exemplar societal institutions and organizations identified by the value lexicon was in line with the expectations and preliminarily confirmed the criterion validity of the lexicon of values. Possible applications of the lexicon of values, as well as some methodological issues pertaining to its future use, are discussed in the final part.

AB  - Predmet rada je motivisanost prostornih značenja srpskih glagola sa prefiksom iz- posmatrana iz ugla metodološkog aparata razvijenog za ispitivanje značenja engleskih fraznih glagola sa partikulom out. Cilj rada je da utvrdimo da li se i u kojim aspektima shematske strukture koje leže u osnovi prostornih značenja glagola sa prefiksom iz- poklapaju sa strukturama koje motivišu prostorna značenja fraznih glagola koji sadrže partikulu out. Na osnovu sprovedene analize, došli smo do zaključka da je stepen poklapanja slikovnoshematske strukure koja motiviše prostorna značenja posmatranih glagola u oba jezika visok i da primarno izvire iz pojmovno-semantičkog okvira njihovih sastavnih komponenti – partikule out u engleskom jeziku i prefiksa iz- u srpskom jeziku.
AB  - The paper deals with the semantic motivation of the concrete meanings of Serbian verbs with the prefix iz-, observed from the viewpoint of the methodological framework developed for analysing the meaning of English phrasal verbs with the particle out. We aim at determining whether and in what aspects the schematic structures that underlie the concrete meanings of the verbs with the prefix iz- overlap with the structures that motivate the concrete meanings of phrasal verbs containing the particle out. Based on the conducted analysis, it may be concluded that the extent of overlap of the image-schematic structure that motivates the concrete meanings of the observed verbs in both languages is high and that it primarily stems from the conceptual-semantic framework of their constituent components – the particle out in English and the prefix iz- in Serbian.

Be a knowledge receiver on a free-flowing river"- a good practice example in the field of nature protection education in the Five-country Biosphere Reserve Mura-Drava-Danube

AB  - Within the “LifelineMDD” project, co-financed by the EU through the Interreg
Danube Transnational Programme, in the WP3 package, coordinated by WWF
Adria-Serbia, an educational program is being developed to impart knowledge
and skills to members of the local community on the importance of nature
conservation and ecological connectivity in the Five-country Biosphere Reserve
Mura-Drava-Danube. The program was based on knowledge from research and
scientific studies on biotic indicator species of birds and fish, abiotic factors of
sediment transport and climate change, cooperation of various stakeholders and
pilot studies of restoration carried out within the same project under the different
packages. The results of the WP3 included: the development of didactic materials
for trainings, including a uniform educational manual with practical activities at
the level of all five biosphere reserve countries (Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary
and Serbia) included in the project, and organization of trainings for national
trainers and local educators. The aim of trainings was to develop and improve the
knowledge and competencies of participants for the use of various digital tools
and interactive techniques and learning methods in nature, and to empower them
to independently implement activities from the four areas that are the focus of
the project. The educational training in Serbia, named “Be a knowledge receiver on
a free-flowing river” was implemented in the Bačko Podunavlje Biosphere reserve
(Sombor, Bački Monoštor, Bezdan) during March, April and May, 2022. The training
was attended by 21 participants who live and/or work within the protected area
itself or in its immediate vicinity. The training participants were teachers, nature
conservationist, professional workers in protected areas, tourist guides, youth workers as well as other individuals who teach on importance of environmental
protection and actively contribute to the promotion of nature conservation, and
play an important role in developing environmental awareness among children
and young people. During the training, more than 40 activities from the Manual
“Local Communities for Living Rivers” were implemented, which is the key to the
successful implementation of an educational program in nature and which is
adapted to work with different age categories of participants. A special focus
was placed on activities for people with developmental disabilities, with the aim
of as effective inclusion as possible. The implementation of the training created
a solid network of national trainers and local educators who have an important
role in the management, preservation, interpretation and promotion of biosphere
reserves. Such a dynamic educational program aimed at protecting nature, with
a large number of practical activities and with different profiles of participants,
represents an effective work model for learning and developing the awareness
of all generations of the local population about the importance of the MDD
transboundary biosphere reserve.
AB  - U okviru projekta “LifelineMDD“, kojega sufinancira EU putem Interreg Danube
Transnational Programme, unutar WP3 paketa, koji je koordiniran od strane
WWF Adria Srbije, razvijan je edukativni program za prenošenje znanja i vještina
članovima lokalne zajednice o važnosti očuvanja prirode i ekološke povezanosti
u Petodržavnom rezervatu biosfere Mura-Drava-Dunav. Program je utemeljen na
rezultatima istraživanja i znanstvenih studija o biotičkim indikatorskim vrstama
ptica i riba, abiotičkim faktorima transporta sedimenta i klimatskih promjena,
suradnji različitih dionika te pilot studijama restauracije, urađenim unutar istog
projekta u okviru različitih paketa. Rezultati WP3 obuhvatili su: izradu didaktičkih
materijala za obuke, uključujući ujednačeni edukativni priručnik s praktičnim
aktivnostima na razini svih pet zemalja rezervata biosfere (Austrija, Slovenija,
Hrvatska, Mađarska i Srbija) uključenih u projekt te organizaciju obuka za
nacionalne trenere i lokalne edukatore iz spomenutih zemalja. Cilj ovih obuka
bio je razvijanje i unaprjeđivanje znanja, vještina i kompetencija sudionika za
korištenje različitih digitalnih alata i interaktivnih tehnika i metoda učenja u prirodi
te njihovo osnaživanje za samostalnu provedbu aktivnosti iz četiriju područja koja
su u fokusu projekta. Edukativna obuka u Srbiji “Tu na rijeci znanje ispeci“ urađena
je unutar Rezervata biosfere Bačko Podunavlje (Sombor, Bački Monoštor, Bezdan)
tijekom ožujka, travnja i svibnja, 2022. godine. Obuci je nazočilo 21 sudionik koji
živi i/ili radi unutar zaštićenog područja ili u njegovoj neposrednoj blizini. Sudionici
obuke su bili nastavnici, učitelji, čuvari prirode, stručni djelatnici u zaštićenim
područjima, turistički vodiči, djelatnici u radu s mladima kao i ostali pojedinci koji
podučavaju druge o značaju zaštite okoliša i aktivno doprinose promociji očuvanja
prirode, te igraju značajnu ulogu u razvijanju ekološke svijesti kod djece i mladih.
Tijekom obuke ostvareno je preko 40 aktivnosti iz Priručnika “Lokalne zajednice za žive rijeke“ koji predstavlja ključ za uspješno provođenje obrazovnog programa u
prirodi, a koji je prilagođen radu s različitim uzrastima sudionika. Također poseban
fokus je stavljen na aktivnosti prilagođene osobama s razvojnim smetnjama, u
cilju što efikasnijeg uključivanja. Realizacijom obuke uspostavljena je čvrsta mreža
obučenih trenera i lokalnih edukatora koji su važna spona u upravljanju, očuvanju,
interpretaciji i promociji rezervata biosfere. Ovakav dinamičan obrazovni program
u cilju zaštite prirode, uz veliki broj praktičnih aktivnosti te s različitim profilima
sudionika, efikasan je model rada za učenje i razvijanje svjesti svih generacija
lokalnog stanovništva o značaju Petodržavnog rezervata biosfere Mura-Drava-
Dunav.

“Xylella is the Enemy that Must be Fought”: Representations of the X. Fastidiosa Bacterium in the Media Discourse

AB  - The paper explores media representations of Xylella fastidiosa, the bacterium that causes severe plant diseases, using data from online sources in English which reported on the developments in the bacterium spreading and treatment from 2015 to 2020. Two directions of analysis are pursued, the quantitative and qualitative one. Quantitative analysis reveals that the bacterium and its effects are described via the terms belonging to the lexical fields of fear, diseases, change, the supernatural, hostility, destruction, killing and war, with the latter three being the most dominant statistically speaking. Further, qualitative analysis attests that some of these terms are used metaphorically as instantiations of the war metaphor, which is generally effective in communicating the severity of the X. fastidiosa induced diseases and mobilising the necessary support. Based on the results, it may be argued that the language used in the media for describing X. fastidiosa fits into the prevalent “catastrophe discourse”, with the purpose of raising awareness of the gravity of the threat the bacterium poses, as well as justifying the severe measures undertaken to contain it.

AB  - Although Professor Vukan Dešić’s brilliance is evidently important on a global scale, unfortunately, not much has been written about his biography and contribution to the scientific field so far, and thus not much is known, as stated by Janko Cvijanović in the text “A Tribute to Professor Vukan Dešić 1906-1975” published in 2011[8]. This overview paper first aims to outline and consolidate all the biographical facts available today in libraries and archives, and then list the teaching, scientific and professional contributions made by Professor Vukan Dešić during his fruitful life. Nowadays, it is extremely important to emphasize the relevance of the pioneering contributions of Professor Dešić, because there can be no bright future without respect for the past. Bearing in mind that Professor Dešić opened up the path into a deeper understanding of the scientific organization of work, at least in the European area, as a sign of gratitude to our founder, we write this paper and dedicate the 8th International Conference of Industrial Engineering – SIE 2022 to him, pointing out especially to the following contributions of our “teacher”: 1) his contribution to the development of higher education through performing the functions of the Vice-rector, Dean and Rector at the University of Belgrade and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering; 2) his contribution to the development of railways as the general manager of the Yugoslav State Railways and assistant to the Minister of Railways, i.e. Transport; 3) the fact that, as early as in 1949, he developed the course in Scientific Organization of Work and founded the Department for Scientific Organization of Work at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Belgrade exactly 70 years ago; 4) the fact that he is responsible for the establishment of the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering, an initiator of the founding of the Faculty of Organizational Sciences and the Technical College of Mechanical Engineering; 5) his contribution to the development of scientific fields as a head and/or founder of a large number of institutes and scientific associations (e.g. Centre for Multidisciplinary Studies, Yugoslav Society of Mechanics); 6) his numerous scientific and professional contributions of tremendous importance, with special emphasis on the fact that he is the founder of the contingent theory of organization, the creator of an innovative Complex Analytical Method, which seriously raised the level of organization of the Yugoslav companies at the time, the forerunner of the invention of Ishikawa, and a serious critic of Taylor’s contributions, who refuted the premises laid by Henry Town as the foundations of management and organization.

AB  - Predmet rada je antonimija 22 prideva srpskog jezika, prikazanih u okviru sintagme koja aktivira jedno
od tri značenja: primarno, sekundarno konkretno i sekundarno apstraktno. Cilj rada je da uporedimo
rezultate dobijene u ovom zadatku sa prethodnim istraživanjem u kome su ispitanici davali antonime za
iste prideve prikazane u kontekstu rečenica. Porede se odgovori ispitanika iz dva tipa uzorka (opšte
populacije i jezičkih stručnjaka) u okviru istog tipa zadatka, kao i rezultati ispitanika iz istog uzorka na dva zadatka sa različitim stimulusima, rečenicama i sintagmama. Pokazuje se da u dve različite
grupe ispitanika u okviru istog zadatka nema izraženijih razlika u broju navedenih antonima, odabiru
antonima i stepenu slaganja u pogledu dominantnog antonima. U različitim tipovima zadatka, broj datih
antonima kod iste grupe ispitanika je isti, dok se dominantno navedeni antonimi donekle razlikuju u
situaciji aktiviranja sekundarnog apstraktnog značenja prideva. U zaključku se diskutuje o implikacijama dobijenih nalaza.
AB  - The paper deals with the antonymy of 22 polysemous Serbian adjectives from an empirical point of view, comparing the results of two studies in which the adjectives were shown to respondents either within a phrase or a
sentence and activated in one of their three senses: primary, secondary concrete and secondary abstract. Research
with both types of stimuli was conducted in two samples, the general population and language experts. Aims of
the paper include determining whether there are differences: (1) in the number of provided antonyms, the choice
of antonyms and the level of agreement regarding the dominant antonym in different types of samples (who had
the same type of task), and (2) between two types of tasks in the number of given antonyms and the dominantly
stated antonym.
The findings indicate that in two groups of respondents with the same type of task, the number of antonyms
increases from the first, through the second to the third situation (i.e. adjective activation in primary, secondary
concrete and secondary abstract sense). The dominantly stated antonyms are almost the same in the cases of activating the adjective in primary and secondary concrete senses, while there are some differences between sample
types in secondary abstract sense. When we compare the results of respondents from the same type of sample on
two different tasks, it is shown that two samples of the general population do not differ significantly with respect
to the average number of antonyms for any activated adjective sense, while there are some differences between
two linguist samples in the number of antonyms when the primary sense is activated. The greatest difference in the
dominantly stated antonyms in different types of tasks, both in the general population and language expert samples,
occurs in the case of activating the adjective secondary abstract senses.

Collaborative learning in ESP classes – an exploration of university students’ opinions

AB  - The research aims to investigate the opinions of
students on different facets of collaborative learning based on
their experience with teamwork in English classes at the university.
The results indicate that students find teamwork most beneficial
when it comes to translation tasks. The main stated advantages of
teamwork refer to more efficient accomplishing of tasks, developing
teamwork skills and interacting with colleagues. The most often
mentioned disadvantages include the unequal contribution of team
members, frequent disagreement between them and a possible lack
of motivation and interest, all of which may result in the lower
achievement of the team as a whole.
AB  - Cilj rada je da se ispita mišljenje studenata o različitim aspektima
kolaborativnog učenja na časovima engleskog jezika za posebne namene na
osnovu njihovog iskustva u izradi jezičkih zadataka u parovima i pravljenju
usmene prezentacije u četvoročlanom ili petočlanom timu. Dodatno, bavimo
se vezom između procene sopstvenog znanja engleskog jezika koju su
davali ispitanici i koristi koje oni mogu imati od timskog rada na časovima
engleskog jezika na univerzitetu. Uzorak su činili studenti Mašinskog fakulteta
Univerziteta u Beogradu, koji su u drugom semestru školske 2019/20. godine

se vezom između procene sopstvenog znanja engleskog jezika koju su

engleskog jezika na univerzitetu. Uzorak su činili studenti Mašinskog fakulteta
Univerziteta u Beogradu, koji su u drugom semestru školske 2019/20. godine
popunili upitnik napravljen za potrebe istraživanja. Rezultati pokazuju da
studenti na časovima engleskog jezika najviše vole da rade u paru i smatraju

AB  - Iako je izvanrednost profesora Vukana Dešića neosporna i u svetskim razmerama, o njegovoj biografiji i doprinosu naučnoj oblasti je do sada, nažalost, vrlo malo pisano. Cilј ovog preglednog rada jeste da sakupi i objedini sve u bibliotekama i arhivima trenutno raspoložive biografske činjenice, a zatim da istakne i nastavne, naučne i stručne doprinose koje je profesor Vukan Dešić tokom svog plodnog života ostavio, kao što su: 1) doprinos razvoju visokoškolskog obrazovanja kroz obavlјanje funkcija prorektora,
dekana i rektora Univerziteta u Beogradu i Mašinskog fakulteta; 2) doprinos razvoju železnica na funkciji generalnog direktora Jugoslovenskih državnih železnica i pomoćnika ministra železnice, odnosno, saobraćaja; 3) doprinos da je, davne 1949. godine, uveo nastavu iz predmeta Naučna organizacija rada i osnovao Katedru za naučnu organizaciju rada pre ravno 70 godina na Mašinskom fakultetu u Beogradu; 4) zaslužan je za formiranje Saobraćajnog fakulteta, inicijator osnivanja Fakulteta organizacionih nauka i Više tehničke mašinske škole; 5) doprinos razvoju naučnog prostora kao direktora i/ili osnivača većeg broja instituta i naučnih društava (npr. AB  - Predmet rada jesu pridevi kojima se opisuju imenice put i
staza, u dva slučaja: onda kada se one koriste u svom osnovnom značenju u domenu kretanja u prostoru i onda kada se upotrebljavaju
u metaforički motivisanim značenjima. Cilj je istraživanja da
se uporede kategorije prideva upotrebljenih uz svaku imenicu
u ova dva značenja, da se utvrde sličnosti i razlike između imenica put i staza prema navedenim kategorijama prideva i da se
rezultati istraživanja uporede sa nalazima dobijenim u sličnim
istraživanjima na materijalu engleskog jezika. Rezultati pokazuju da je broj kategorija prideva, kao i broj različitih prideva u
kategoriji znatno veći kada su pridevi upotrebljeni uz imenice u
osnovnom, nego u metaforičkom značenju. Кada se pridev upotrebi
sa imenicom u metaforičkom značenju, dominanti su pridevi
kojima se opisuje koliko je kretanje po metaforičkoj stazi/putu
lako ili teško, kao i pridevi koji potiču iz ciljnog domena, što
je u skladu sa prethodnim nalazima u engleskom jeziku.
AB  - The paper focuses on the adjectives used in describing the Serbian nouns put and staza,
in two cases: when they are used in their primary meaning to denote the elements of motion
through space and when they are used in their extended meanings. The aim is to compare the
categories of adjectives used with each noun in their primary and extended meaning and to
determine the similarities and differences between the nouns put and staza with respect to the
obtained adjective categories. Additionally, we compare the findings of the present research to
the findings of previous similar studies conducted in the English language which served as an
inspiration for the current study (Johansson Falck 2013). The results indicate that the number
of adjective categories, as well as the number of different adjectives used within the category,
is significantly higher when adjectives are used with nouns in the primary than in the metaphorical meaning. When an adjective is used with a noun in a metaphorical sense, dominant
adjectives are those describing how easy or how difficult it is to thread the path or a road;
further, there is a vast number of adjectives that originate from the target domains, which is
consistent with the findings in English pertaining to the nouns road and path.

intuitivna jezička znanja leksikografa razlikuju od znanja izvornih govornika, koji nisu jezički stručnjaci. Ispitanici iz dva uzorka imali su zadatak
da navedu pridev suprotnog značenja u odnosu na grafički istaknut pridev u
rečenici, koji je aktiviran u primarnom konkretnom, sekundarnom konkretnom
i sekundarnom apstraktnom značenju. Rezultati pokazuju da se ispitanici dve
grupe dosledno slažu oko toga šta je antonim prideva aktiviranog u primarnom
značenju, dok razlike postoje u izboru antonima za sekundarna značenja, pri čemu
adekvatniji antonim ponekad navode jezički stručnjaci, ali u nekim slučajevima
i jezički laici. Dobijeni rezultati sugerišu da se pri ispitivanju antonimije
istraživači podjednako mogu osloniti na intuiciju jezičkih laika, kao i na
intuiciju jezičkih stručnjaka.
AB  - The paper explores whether and in what way the intuitions of linguists differ from the
intuitions of non-linguist native speakers on the example of antonymy. Reliance on speakers’ intuitions in linguistic research is neither new nor uncommon. However, the question
of whether the intuitions of non-linguist native speakers should be treated the same as the
intuitions of those with formal linguistic education is still open. Previous studies dealing
with this topic compared linguist and non-linguist intuitions mainly based on their responses in various syntax tasks, yielding different results in terms of reliability of non-linguist
vs. linguist intuitions.
In this study, respondents from two samples (16 lexicographers and 81 non-linguist
native speakers of Serbian) had the task to replace the underlined adjective in a sentence
with its antonym. Twenty-two Serbian adjectives were used in different contexts in stimulus-sentences activating their primary, secondary concrete, and secondary abstract meaning. When the results from two samples are compared, it is observed that, in both samples,
the number of stated antonyms tends to increase from the primary, through the secondary
concrete, to the secondary abstract meaning. Two groups of respondents provided the same
dominant antonyms when the adjectives were activated in their primary meaning, and only
one different antonym when the adjective was used in secondary concrete meaning. The
biggest difference between the samples was found in antonyms given by respondents when
the adjective was used in its secondary abstract meaning. The results indicate that, compared to linguists, there is higher agreement in the sample of native speakers on the dominant antonym when the adjective is activated in primary meaning. There is also a tendency
of higher agreement on the antonym in the group of native speakers when the adjective is
used in secondary abstract and concrete meanings as well, but the difference is not statistically significant.
Bearing in mind the obtained results, it can be concluded that, in the field of antonymy, researchers can equally rely both on the intuition of native speakers and that of
linguists. Still, further studies on larger samples of both categories of respondents are necessary to complement the findings of the current research.

tri vrednosti (niska, srednja i visoka). Cilj rada je da se utvrdi stepen upotrebe epistemičkih markera u dvama jezicima, kao i u odabranim naučnim oblastima. Istraživanje je izvršeno na korpusu od po četiri naučna rada iz svake oblasti na engleskom
i na srpskom jeziku. Rezultati pokazuju da se epistemički markeri nešto više koriste u radovima na engleskom nego u onima na srpskom jeziku. U obama jezicima, najveći
broj epistemičkih markera upotrebljava se u radovima iz oblasti psihologije. Takođe,
epistemički markeri niske i srednje vrednosti zastupljeniji su nego oni visoke vrednosti, što ukazuje na to da su autori u obama jezicima oprezni prilikom iznošenja
kategoričkih tvrdnji, što je u skladu sa postulatima pisanja naučnog rada i nalazima
ranijih istraživanja.
AB  - The paper deals with epistemic modality markers in English and Serbian research articles covering
three different scientific fields (mechanical engineering, agriculture, and psychology). The research is based
on a Systemic Functional Grammar within which epistemic modality is viewed as a probability implying
three values (low, median and high).The aim is to determine the degree of the use of epistemic markers in
two languages, as well as in the selected scientific fields. The research was conducted on a corpus of four research articles from each field in English and Serbian. The results show that the use of epistemic markers is

AB  - Poslednjih godina, upotreba metadiskursa u pisanoj produkciji na univerzitetskom nivou učenja jezika predstavlja vrlo važnu temu u literaturi. Ovaj rad bavi se upotrebom dve specifične metadiskursne odlike, ograda i pojačivača, u esejima studenata posvećenim pitanjima sprečavanja efekata globalnog zagrevanja i napisanim u okviru kursa engleskog jezika na univerzitetskom nivou. Analizirano je ukupno 124 eseja (20.829 reči). Primenom Hajlandovog interpersonalnog modela metadiskursa, utvrđeno je da se u analiziranim esejima znatno češće koriste ograde nego pojačivači (22,23 prema 8,26 na 1000 reči). Unutar obe klase uočavaju se različiti glagolski, imenički, priloški i pridevski markeri ograđivanja i pojačavanja iskaza. U zaključku se ukazuje na neophodnost uvođenja metadiskursnih markera u kurikulum nastave stranog jezika na univerzitetskom nivou s obzirom na njihov značaj ne samo u akademskim, već i u drugim tipovima tekstova s kojima će se (diplomirani) studenti susretati u toku i posle studiranja.
AB  - In recent years, the use of metadiscourse in the material written at the university level of language learning has been a very important topic in the literature. This paper deals with the use of two specific metadiscourse features, hedges and boosters, in students' essays related to the issues of preventing the effects of global warming. The essays were produced during a university-level English language course at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. A total of 124 essays (20,829 words) were analysed. Using Hyland's interpersonal metadiscourse model, it was found that hedges were much more frequent in the analysed essays in comparison to boosters (22.23 vs. 8.26 per 1000 words). Within both classes, there were examples of use of different verbs, nouns, adverbs, and adjectives acting as hedges or boosters. The conclusion points to the need to introduce metadiscourse markers in the curriculum of foreign language teaching at the university level, given their importance not only in academic but also in other types of texts that (graduate) students will deal with both during and after their studies.

najčešće u radovima iz oblasti poljoprivrede i građevinarstva, zatim slede
radovi iz medicine, dok su najslabije zastupljene u diskursu lingvistike. U
zaključku se diskutuju dobijeni nalazi, kao i mogućnosti korišćenja korpusa
sačinjenih od naučnih radova u nastavi akademskog pisanja na univerzitetskom
nivou.
AB  - The paper focuses on the use of the predicate decomposition structures in Serbian
research articles (RAs) of four scientific fields: civil engineering, linguistics, medicine and
agriculture. We primarily analysed the structures comprising semicopulative verbs, for
example: vršiti analizu/pregled/ispitivanje – ‘to conduct analysis/examination/researchʼ.
The aim of this preliminary study is to examine whether, in which way and to what extent
the predicate decomposition structures are used in RAs of these fields. The corpus is made
up of two articles per each field, published in scientific journals (31,733 words in total). It
is shown that such structures most often occur in RAs of the fields of agriculture and civil
engineering, followed by RAs of medicine, while they are least used in the discourse of
linguistics. The conclusion discusses the obtained findings, as well as the possibilities of
using the corpus made up of RAs in teaching academic writing at the university level.

AB  - The aim of the paper is to investigate the semantic motivation of a set of English and

AB  - Pravilna upotreba metadiskursa u akademskom pisanju predstavlja važan deo
pragmatičke kompetencije autora, kao i sredstvo za oblikovanje specifičnog konteksta
u okviru jedne diskursne zajednice. Predmet ovog istraživanja su metadiskursni markeri upotrebljeni u sažecima naučnih radova na srpskom jeziku objavljenim u časopisu
Poljoprivredna tehnika u periodu od 2008. do 2018. godine. Cilj rada je bio da se utvrdi
da li i u kojoj meri se metadiskursni markeri koriste u sažetku naučnih radova iz ove
oblasti kako bi se postigla koherentnost i kohezija izlaganja. Diskurs poljoprivredne
tehnike odabran je jer nismo naišle na istraživanja ove vrste u toj oblasti o tome na koji
način autori koriste metadiskursne markere kako bi oblikovali kontekst i uspostavili
odgovarajući odnos sa potencijalnim čitaocima. Za klasifikaciju markera korišćena je
Hajlandova taksonomija. Pokazuje se da autori sažetaka u većoj meri upotrebljavaju
interaktivne nego interakcione markere, čime ostvaruju dobru povezanost teksta. Takođe, kako bi preneli odgovarajuću dozu opreza, ali i ubeđenosti u rezultate svog istra-
živanja, približno podjednako koriste ograde i pojačivače. Na osnovu utvrđene upotrebe metadiskursnih markera u analiziranom korpusu, može se zaključiti da se diskurs
poljoprivredne tehnike nalazi negde između čvrstih i mekih nauka. U zaključku se razmatraju implikacije dobijenih rezultata i daju preporuke za buduća istraživanja.
AB  - The proper use of metadiscourse in academic writing is an important part of the author’s pragmatic competence, which serves as a means for creating a specific context
within a discourse community. The current study explores metadiscourse markers used
in research article abstracts written in the Serbian language and published in the journal Poljoprivredna tehnika in the period from 2008 to 2018. The aim of the paper was
to determine whether and to what extent metadiscourse markers were used in research
article abstracts in this field in order to achieve coherence and cohesion of the text. The discourse of agricultural engineering has been selected since, to our knowledge, there
have been no prior studies in this area on how authors use metadiscourse markers to
shape the rhetorical context and establish a proper relationship with potential readers.
Hyland’s taxonomy was used to classify the markers. It is shown that interactive markers were used to a greater extent than interactional markers, which serves to increase
text cohesion. Additionally, the authors use hedges and boosters to an approximately
same extent to convey both an appropriate degree of caution and conviction in the results of their research. Based on the findings on the use of metadiscourse markers in the
analysed corpus, it can be concluded that the discourse of agricultural engineering is
somewhere between hard and soft sciences. The conclusion discusses the implications

Poljoprivredna tehnika u periodu od 2008. do 2018. godine. Cilj rada je bio da se utvrdi
da li i u kojoj meri se metadiskursni markeri koriste u sažetku naučnih radova iz ove
oblasti kako bi se postigla koherentnost i kohezija izlaganja. Diskurs poljoprivredne
tehnike odabran je jer nismo naišle na istraživanja ove vrste u toj oblasti o tome na koji
način autori koriste metadiskursne markere kako bi oblikovali kontekst i uspostavili
odgovarajući odnos sa potencijalnim čitaocima. Za klasifikaciju markera korišćena je
Hajlandova taksonomija. Pokazuje se da autori sažetaka u većoj meri upotrebljavaju
interaktivne nego interakcione markere, čime ostvaruju dobru povezanost teksta. Takođe, kako bi preneli odgovarajuću dozu opreza, ali i ubeđenosti u rezultate svog istra-
živanja, približno podjednako koriste ograde i pojačivače. Na osnovu utvrđene upotrebe metadiskursnih markera u analiziranom korpusu, može se zaključiti da se diskurs
poljoprivredne tehnike nalazi negde između čvrstih i mekih nauka. U zaključku se razmatraju implikacije dobijenih rezultata i daju preporuke za buduća istraživanja., The proper use of metadiscourse in academic writing is an important part of the author’s pragmatic competence, which serves as a means for creating a specific context
within a discourse community. The current study explores metadiscourse markers used
in research article abstracts written in the Serbian language and published in the journal Poljoprivredna tehnika in the period from 2008 to 2018. The aim of the paper was
to determine whether and to what extent metadiscourse markers were used in research
article abstracts in this field in order to achieve coherence and cohesion of the text. The discourse of agricultural engineering has been selected since, to our knowledge, there
have been no prior studies in this area on how authors use metadiscourse markers to
shape the rhetorical context and establish a proper relationship with potential readers.
Hyland’s taxonomy was used to classify the markers. It is shown that interactive markers were used to a greater extent than interactional markers, which serves to increase
text cohesion. Additionally, the authors use hedges and boosters to an approximately
same extent to convey both an appropriate degree of caution and conviction in the results of their research. Based on the findings on the use of metadiscourse markers in the
analysed corpus, it can be concluded that the discourse of agricultural engineering is
somewhere between hard and soft sciences. The conclusion discusses the implications
of the obtained results and provides recommendations for future research.",

use of metadiscourse markers and to determine their types according to Hyland’s (2005)
taxonomy. The corpus consisted of 100 essays dealing with two topics related to mechanical
engineering. The research findings indicate that students used interactional metadiscourse
categories to a significantly higher extent than interactive metadiscourse categories. The
most used markers overall were transitions, followed by engagement markers and hedges.
This suggests that students tried to capture the attention of their readers and make them
participate in the discussion. Still, some markers were misused or overused, which implies
that students need more instruction in the adequate use of markers. It can be concluded that
adding explicit instruction in the use of metadiscourse markers to the ESP university
curriculum would increase the level of students’ pragmatic competence so as to help them
avoid pragmatic failures in writing.
AB  - U poslednje vreme, metadiskursni markeri predstavljaju čest predmet istraživanja u
primenjenoj lingvistici i analizi diskursa. Svrha metadiskursnih markera jeste uspostavljanje
odnosa sa čitaocem i bolje prenošenje poruke autora, što je posebno važno kada je reč o
akademskom pisanju. Usled toga, metadiskursni markeri imaju važnu ulogu i u razvoju
pragmatičke kompetencije onih koji uče strane jezike.
Predmet ovog istraživanja je metadiskurs u žanru studentskih eseja. Cilj istraživanja jeste da
se analizira upotreba metadiskursnih markera u esejima koje su pisali studenti koji pohađaju
kurseve engleskog jezika struke na univerzitetu i da ih razvrsta prema široko korišćenoj
Hajlandovoj taksonomiji metadiskursnih markera. Korpus su činili eseji studenata prve
godine mašinstva (N=100). Studenti su imali zadatak da napišu esej na engleskom jeziku
dužine od 150 do 250 reči kao deo završnog ispita, na jednu od dve teme koje se tiču oblasti
mašinstva: “Advances in Mechanical Engineering in the 21st century” i “Mechanical
Engineering – Branches and Opportunities”. O ovim temama se na časovima prethodno
diskutovalo, ali studenti nisu dobili uputstva o tome na koji način treba koristiti
metadiskursne markere u esejima.
Rezultati pokazuju da su studenti koristili oko 52,5 markera na 1.000 reči. U okviru analize
prema kategorijama Hajlandovog interpersonalnog modela metadiskursa, pokazuje se da su
interakcioni markeri (607 markera ukupno, tj. 32,55 na 1.000 reči) češće korišćeni od
interaktivnih markera (373 markera ukupno, tj. 20 na 1.000 reči). Najbrojniji markeri u
pojedinačnim kategorijama su bile tranzitivni markeri (ukupno 281, tj. 15,07 na 1.000 reči)
koje pripadaju grupi interaktivnih markera, a zatim slede markeri angažovanja (254 ukupno,
tj. 13,52 na 1.000 reči) i ograde (222 ukupno, tj. 11,90 na 1.000 reči), koji pripadaju grupi
interakcionih markera.
Ovakav obrazac upotrebe metadiskursnih markera u analiziranim esejima ukazuje na to da
su studenti najpre želeli da uključe čitaoca u tekst, a zatim i da na odgovarajući način
povežu različite ideje i da oprezno iznesu svoje stavove o datim temama. Iako se pokazalo
da je većina studenata sposobna da koristi metadiskursne markere u pisanju eseja na stručnu temu na engleskom jeziku, u pojedinim slučajevima zabeležena je i pogrešna ili preterana
upotreba metadiskursa. Stoga se može zaključiti da bi eksplicitno uvođenje teme upotrebe
metadiskursa na časovima engleskog jezika na univerzitetu doprinelo razvijanju
pragmatičke kompetencije i omogućilo studentima da se adekvatno izražavaju u pisanoj
formi na engleskom jeziku pri pisanju predloga projekata, tehničke dokumentacije ili
naučnih radova u njihovoj daljoj profesionalnoj karijeri.

Mišljenja studenata o onlajn nastavi engleskog jezika - mogućnosti i ograničenja

AB  - Predmet rada je percepcija onlajn nastave engleskog jezika na univerzitetskom nivou iz ugla studenata/kinja koji su ovaj vid nastave pohađali na Poljoprivrednom fakultetu Univerziteta u Beogradu u prolećnom semestru 2020. godine, tokom proglašenog vanrednog stanja zbog epidemije kovida 19. U istraživanju je učestvovalo 40 ispitanika/ca. Ekstenzivnim, onlajn upitnikom koji je konstruisan za potrebe ove studije, ispitivana su mišljenja studenata o raznim aspektima realizovane onlajn nastave i način na koji procenjuju značaj tehničkih, kontekstualnih i psiholoških faktora u tom procesu, kao i motivisanost za učešće u ovom obliku nastave. Rezultati analize pokazuju da su ispitanici/e ispoljili/e visok nivo motivisanosti za ovaj vid nastave engleskog jezika. Ocena praktično svih analiziranih aspekata onlajn nastave je preovlađujuće pozitivna, što se odnosi i na opaženu ekvivalentnost znanja stečenog na klasičnim i na onlajn časovima, kao i na podjednaku interaktivnost jednog i drugog vida nastave. Kao glavnu dobru stvar onlajn nastave većina ispitanika/ca navodi činjenicu da su nastavu mogli da prate od kuće čime su uštedeli na vremenu, kao i olakšanu komunikaciju i atmosferu koja se stvara na onlajn časovima jezika. Kao najčešća loša strana ovog vida nastave navedene su zamerke tehničke prirode, poput loše internet veze i sa njom povezanih prekida zvuka i slike. U zaključnom delu diskutovan je značaj dobijenih rezultata u kontekstu njihovih pedagoških implikacija i potencijala za unapređenje ovakvog vida nastave.
AB  - Online classes are not a brand-new concept in teaching languages. The use of Internet and different applications and platforms in everyday life all probably contributed to recognizing online classes as a convenient way for language teaching. There has been a plethora of research on online classes, their benefits and weaknesses, as well as on students' attitudes towards this type of learning. Since there are many benefits of integrating online materials into language teaching programmes, some language practitioners are eager to use these regularly, whereas some still hesitate and use this type of teaching rarely or not at all. However, the year 2020 forced all university teachers to conduct online classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, since it was impossible to conduct face-to-face instruction in classroom setting. This opened up new possibilities, but brought about various problems as well. Having all this in mind, this paper aims to show how university students perceived the online classes of English during the declared national state of emergency in Serbia. These particular students attended online English classes at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade, in the spring semester of 2020. An extensive, online questionnaire designed for the purposes of the study was used to examine students' opinions on various aspects of online classes, their assessment of important technical, contextual, and psychological factors in the process, as well as their motivation to participate in online classes. The results of the analysis show that the respondents were highly motivated for this type of English language classes. They predominantly positively assessed practically all analyzed aspects of online classes, including the observed equivalence of knowledge acquired in face-to-face and online classes, as well as the equal interactivity of both types of classes. The level of self-assessed digital literacy of respondents was fairly high, which must have helped students to a great extent in successively attending the classes. As for the main advantage of online classes, most respondents stated that they were able to attend classes from home, which saved their time and facilitated communication. They also liked the atmosphere in online language classes. The most commonly stated disadvantage of this type of classes is poor internet connection, followed by the related interruptions of sound and video. The dominant attitude of the respondents was that English classes at the university should be conducted as hybrid courses, which implies that they should be a combination of face-to-face teaching and online classes. Although small-scale, the findings of this pilot research can help pinpoint the weaknesses of online classes, as well as offer useful suggestions aimed at improving them in the future. For instance, since students mostly use their mobile phones to attend online classes, it would be convenient for the class activities to be accessible and manageable through different social media apps. Still, it may be argued that the findings are limited in scope since the study was conducted on the sample of students of only one faculty of the University of Belgrade; additionally, it explored the experience with only one online course these students attended. Therefore, the research may be expanded by exploring the potential of online classes in different subject courses, as well as at other faculties.

AB  - Cilj istraživanja je da empirijski ispitamo status antonimije jednog skupa polisemičnih prideva srpskog jezika, prikazanih u rečeničnom kontekstu koji aktivira određena značenja (primarno i dva sekundarna). Pokazuje se da se ispitanici oko izbora antonima najviše slažu u slučaju aktiviranja primarnog značenja, dok najslabije slaganje postoji za sekundarno apstraktno značenje. Leksički antonim poklapa se sa pravim, u najvećem broju slučajeva i sa antonimom za sekundarno konkretno značenje, a u jednom broju slučajeva razlikuje se od dominantnog antonima za sekundarno apstraktno značenje. Prosečan broj različitih navedenih antonima varira u zavisnosti od aktiviranog značenja. Dobijeni rezultati interpretiraju se u skladu sa teorijskim pristupima antonimiji.
AB  - This research is aimed at empirically exploring the status of antonymy of one set of polysemous adjectives of the Serbian language, shown in the context of a sentence that activates certain adjective meanings (the primary and two secondary meanings). The agreement in respondents' choice of antonyms is the highest when it comes to primary meaning, and the lowest in the case of secondary abstract meaning. The lexical antonym is the same as the antonym given for the primary meaning and, in the majority of cases, the antonym for the secondary concrete meaning. However, it is frequently different from the dominant antonym for the secondary abstract meaning. The average number of different antonyms varies, depending on the activated meaning. The findings obtained are discussed in the light of the theoretical approaches to antonymy.

AB  - This paper explores the semantic motivation of English phrasal verbs with the particle out whose constituent verb refers to processes and activities performed by or to plants and their prefixed Serbian counterparts with the prefixes iz-, s- and raz-. The cognitive approach to the semantics of phrasal verbs and prefixes is employed, which entails observing their meaning through the notions of conceptualisation, image-schematic structuring and spatial schematisation. It is shown that there is a high degree of correspondence in the concrete and abstract senses of the contrasted English and Serbian lexemes owing to the same spatial configurations which structure the constituent English and Serbian satellites (the particle out and the prefixes iz-, s- and raz-, respectively). Additionally, various conceptual metaphors stemming from the domain of PLANTS, inherent in the constituent verb, play a prominent role in the extension of the phrasal and prefixed verb meaning in both languages. The conclusion underlines the benefits of using the cognitive semantic approach in the contrastive studies of particles and prefixes.

AB  - In cognitive linguistic literature, metonymy has been posited as one of the
vital mechanisms in studying the extension of meaning. Kövecses and Radden (1998)
put forth the idea of viewing the relationships within idealized cognitive models
(ICMs) as instances of metonymy, i.e. part-and-part configurations, providing a
classification of several ICMs to this respect (action, causation, perception, production,
control, possession etc.). This paper is aimed at exploring the role of the conceptual
metonymies belonging to different types of ICMs in the semantic motivation of English
phrasal verbs featuring the particles in, out, on and off. It is shown that the instances
featuring the action ICM are the most prominent in the analysed examples. In several
cases, phrasal verb meaning was motivated by the causation ICM. The established
metonymies stem from the conceptual-semantic framework of the verb, motivating
the semantic interaction between the verb and the particle, and thus contribute to the
specific meaning of the overall phrasal verb. It may be concluded as a result that the
classification of ICMs proposed by Kövecses and Radden will prove to be valuable
when exploring the semantics of English phrasal verbs.
AB  - U okviru teorijskog pravca kognitivne lingvistike metonimija se smatra jednim
od najvažnijih mehanizama u proučavanju proširenja značenja. Kevečeš i Raden
(Kövecses & Radden 1998) razvili su tezu o posmatranju odnosa unutar idealizovanih
kognitivnih modela kao primera za realizaciju metonimije, i, u skladu s tim, ponudili
klasifikaciju idealizovanih kognitivnih modela koja obuhvata IKM radnje, IKM
uzročnosti, IKM percepcije, IKM produkcije, IKM kontrole, IKM posedovanja itd. U ovom radu razmatra se uloga pojmovnih metonimija koje pripadaju različitim
tipovima idealizovanih kognitivnih modela u semantičkoj motivisanosti engleskih
fraznih glagola sa partikulama in, out, on i off. Pokazuje se da u analiziranim primerima
najveću ulogu imaju metonimije koje pripadaju IKM radnje. U jednom broju primera,
značenje fraznih glagola motivisano je i metonimijama koje spadaju u IKM uzročnosti.
Ustanovljene metonimije izviru iz pojmovno-semantičkog okvira glagola i motivišu
semantičku interakciju između glagola i partikule, čime doprinose specifičnom
značenju fraznog glagola. Zaključuje se da klasifikacija idealizovanih kognitivnih
modela i metonimija u okviru njih, koju su razvili Kevečeš i Raden, može biti veoma

The role of path metaphors in conceptualising life in English and Serbian: A corpus-based analysis

AB  - The aim of this paper is to obtain insight into crosslinguistic similarities and
differences in English and Serbian regarding the conceptualisation of life via
components related to motion along a path. This is accomplished by studying
the extended meanings of a set of English and Serbian lexemes associated with
departure, passage through intermediate path points, arrival and the space along
which the motion occurs, using randomly selected examples from the representative corpora of the two languages. Since a common focus in cognitive linguistic studies has been on the metaphor life is a journey, we show that there
is an equally important case of life being conceptualised as a trajector in both
languages, which testifies to the phenomenon of metaphor duality. In addition,
the direction of the movement also serves as an important factor in structuring
various aspects of life and its related concepts.

AB  - The paper focuses on the synonymous relations established between a certain number of
English phrasal verbs containing the same constituent verb and the particles away, out and
off. The research is carried out within the theoretical framework of cognitive linguistics,
which enables us to view the semantic motivation of the linguistic units under examination
in the light of their conceptual structure. This semantic analysis includes 124 phrasal verbs
with the particle away, 406 phrasal verbs with the particle out and 260 phrasal verbs with
the particle off, with the total of 1,620 different meanings. It is shown that a considerable
number of the investigated phrasal verbs exhibit a high level of synonymous relations. We
argue that such a semantic phenomenon is a result of the closely comparable conceptual
scenes motivating their semantic structure, which stem from different spatial configurations
underlying the conceptual framework of the constituent particles. The final part discusses
the obtained findings and their possible implications for enhancing the understanding of the
nature of phrasal verbs in general, as well as for further investigations of the semantic
relations established among English phrasal verbs.
