Influence of Aging on the Flexural Strength of PLA and PLA-X 3D-Printed Materials

AB  - The three-point bending test is a valuable method for evaluating the mechanical properties of 3D-printed biomaterials, which can be used in various applications. The use of 3D printing in specimen preparation enables precise control over material composition and microstructure, facilitating the investigation of different printing parameters and advanced materials. The traditional approach to analyzing the mechanical properties of a material using a three-point bending test has the disadvantage that it provides only global information about the material’s behavior. This means that it does not provide detailed insight into the local strain distribution within the material. However, the 2D Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method offers additional insight, especially in terms of strain localization. DIC is an optical technique that measures full-field displacements and strains on the surface of a sample. PLA and enhanced PLA-X material were utilized to create three-point bending samples. The aim of this paper was to analyze and compare the influence of aging on the mechanical properties of PLA and enhanced PLA-X materials using three-point bending coupled with the DIC method. The results showed statistically significant differences between the PLA and PLA-X, for both the new and aged materials. The aged PLA samples had the highest average value of maximal force around 68 N, which was an increase of 8.8% compared to the new PLA samples. On the other hand, the aged PLA-X material had an increase of 7.7% in the average maximal force compared to the new PLA-X samples. When comparing the two materials, the PLA samples had higher maximal force values, 6.2% for the new samples, and 7.3% for the aged samples. The DIC results showed that both the new PLA and PLA-X samples endured higher strain values at Points 1 and 2 than the aged ones, except for the aged PLA-X sample at Point 2, where the new sample had higher strain values. However, for the first 5 min of the experiment, both materials exhibited identical behavior, after which point significant differences started to occur for both materials, as well as at Points 1 and 2. A more profound comprehension of the biomechanical characteristics of both PLA and PLA-X material is essential to enhance the knowledge for potential biomedical applications. The DIC method was found to be a powerful tool for analyzing the deformation and failure behavior of samples and for complementing the traditional approach to material testing.

AB  - Different pipe manufacturing techniques, such as the manufacture of seamless pipes in the oil sector employing a conical shaft, necessitate data on the circumferential strain and stress condition of the pipe. The purpose of this study was to evaluating the displacement, strain, and stress behavior of a pipe ring tensile specimen (PRTS) in the hoop direction, as there was a lack of a standardized testing methodology. Five single S235JRH steel PRTS were tested for the study. The study describes how to test S235JRH steel PRTS with a Digital Image Correlation approach. The 3D Digital Image Correlation technique methodology was used to record the evolution of the strain. In the break zone and almost equivalent locations, all Single PRTS fractured. The experimental ultimate strength value's deviation value (also known as the real stress value) is greater than the theoretical ultimate strength value.

AB  - The three-point bending test is a widely used and important method for evaluating the mechanical properties of materials. Its versatility, applicability, and ability to provide valuable information on flexural strength, stiffness, and fracture toughness make it a valuable tool in materials science, engineering, and biomedical research. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) provides a high resolution and full-field measurement of deformation during the bending process. DIC also allows for the calculation of strain fields, which can be used to determine material properties such as Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio. This is particularly important in understanding the strain distribution and identifying potential failure mechanisms in the material. In this paper, the potential application of the 2D Digital Image Correlation method on three-point bending tests is presented.

AB  - Fused deposition modeling is one of the most widely used 3-D printing technologies, among other additive manufacturing processes, because it is easy to use,
can produce parts faster, and the cost of the finished part is low. Printing processes and finished parts are often studied and characterized using different
techniques to collect mechanical, numerical, thermal and dimensional data, with
the aim of improving and optimizing the result. The first part of this research is
based on the observation of temperature changes with a thermal imaging camera
during the fused deposition modeling printing process and during the cooling
process after printing. Specimens of polylactic acid and polylactic acid-X improved with second-phase particles were prepared to compare the thermal and
dimensional properties of the two materials. The obtained results determined the
characteristic temperature behavior of the materials. In the second part of the research, a 3-D optical scanner was used to verify the stability and accuracy of the
printed specimens over time. The proposed measurement period showed that stabilization of the parameters takes place, and further follow-up should be performed thereafter.

A specially constructed steel instrument with two D blocks is used to test PRTS. Two D-shaped mandrels are fixed on the tensile tool and tensile testing equipment, and a 3D printed PRTS is placed over them. The three-dimensional Digital Image Correlation (3D DIC) approach was used to capture the strain evolution in the gage length of the specimens. All specimens are 3D scanned to evaluate the geometry of the PRTS cross-section following fracture. Six groups of PRTS were studied, with three different filling percentages (60, 90, and 100 percent) and two different geometric kinds (Single and Double PRTS). The results reveal that the kind and percentage of filling, as well as the printing method, affect material behaviour; however, the methodology using a DIC system, 3D printer, and scanner is an excellent tool for mapping entire strain fields in PRTS and thereby defining pipe mechanical properties.

AB  - Fused deposition modelling is, among the other additive manufacturing processes, one of the 
most frequently used three-dimensional printing technologies, because of its ease of use, high speed in production and low cost of the final part. Printing processes and finished parts are often examined and characterized using various techniques, for gathering the mechanical, numerical, thermal, dimensional data, with goal to improve and optimize the outcome. The first part of this research is 
based on the following the temperature changes using thermal imaging camera during fused deposi-
tion modelling printing processes and during cooling process after printing is finished. Specimens 
were made from polylactic acid and polylactic acid - X improved with second-phase particles, in 
order to compare thermal and dimensional characteristics of both materials. Obtained results determined characteristic temperature behavior of materials. The second part of research employed optical 3D scanner for verification the stability and accuracy of printed specimens over time. most frequently used three-dimensional printing technologies, because of its ease of use, high speed in production and low cost of the final part. Printing processes and finished parts are often examined and characterized using various techniques, for gathering the mechanical, numerical, thermal, dimensional data, with goal to improve and optimize the outcome. The first part of this research is 
based on the following the temperature changes using thermal imaging camera during fused deposi-
tion modelling printing processes and during cooling process after printing is finished. Specimens 
were made from polylactic acid and polylactic acid - X improved with second-phase particles, in 
order to compare thermal and dimensional characteristics of both materials. Obtained results determined characteristic temperature behavior of materials. The second part of research employed optical 3D scanner for verification the stability and accuracy of printed specimens over time. Proposed period of measuring has shown that stabilization of parameters is taking place, and further follow-up should be done afterwards.",

AB  - Data on the strain and stress status of the pipe in the circumferential direction are required for various pipe manufacturing procedures (e.g., in the oil business, the process of manufacturing seamless pipes with a conical shaft). The aim of this study is to develop a procedure to determine the strain and stress behavior of Pipe Ring Tensile Specimens (PRTSs) in the hoop direction, as there are a lack of official standardized methods for testing PRTS. This paper discusses the application of the Digital Image Correlation method for testing plastic PRTSs. PRTSs are tested using a specially designed steel tool with two D blocks. A 3D-printed PRTS is placed over two D-shaped mandrels, which are fixed on a tensile tool and tensile testing machine. The strain evolution in the gage length of the specimens is captured using the three-dimensional Digital Image Correlation (3D DIC) method. To check the geometry of the cross-section of the PRTS after fracture, all the specimens are 3D scanned. For the study, six groups of PRTS are analyzed, consisting of three filling percentages (60, 90, and 100%) and two geometry types (Single and Double PRTS). The results show that the type and percentage of filling, as well as the method of printing, affect the material behavior. However, the approach with the DIC system, 3D printer, and scanner shows that they are effective instruments for mapping complete strain fields in PRTS, and thus are effective in characterizing the mechanical properties of pipes.

AB  - Procedura ispitivanja epruveta oblika prstena dobijenih iz cevi nije standardizovana i potpuno definisana. Cilj ove studije je razvijanje procedure za određivanje polja pomeranja i deformacija kod epruveta oblika prstena. Predložena je geometrija epruvete sa jednostrukom konfiguracijom standardne epruvete. Za potrebe ove studije, epruvete se proizvode tehnologijom 3D štampe sa standardnim polilaktičnim polimerom (PLA). Jedan od glavnih elemenata eksperimentalne postavke za ispitivanje epruveta oblika prstena je specijalno razvijeni alat sa dva D bloka. Alat se
postavlja na kidalicu i prenosi opterećenje na unutrašnju površinu uzorka simulirajući unutrašnji
pritisak. Metoda korelacije digitalnih slika koristi se za analizu polja pomeranja i deformacija na
spoljašnjoj površini uzorka. Eksperimenti se izvode pri brzinama od 1 mm/min na kidalici Shimadzu
AGS-X. Rezultati ispitivanja pokazuju da su kod predloženih epruveta lomovi nastali u zonama
snimanja, tj. u definisanim suženjima i ukazuju na mogućnost daljeg poboljšanja postupka ispitivanja i geometrije epruveta.

AB  - Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) technologies are an important part of the system for detection and characterization of any type of damages of engineering structures. Various technologies have been applied in different engineering sectors in last several decades – strain gauges, acoustic emission, fibre optic sensors, etc. One of the methods that has a high potential for application in sector of pressure vessels, especially on complex geometrical parts, is 3D Digital Image Correlation (3D-DIC) method. 3D-DIC method enables full-field displacement and strain measurement. The aim of this paper was to investigate the possibilities of application
of the Aramis system (GOM, Germany) based on 3D-DIC method on several cases typical for pressure vessels and its influence on structural health – crack detection and crack propagation monitoring and stress concentration areas of complex structures in the vessel-nozzle joint (sphere to cylinder and cylinder to cylinder connections). Aramis software was used to measuring von Mises strain fields and displacements. The results showed that 3D-DIC method is suitable for structural health monitoring of pressure vessels during their lifespan.

AB  - Pipe material propertise test is very important for quality investigate of pipe construction. Many studies that have been conducted are based on use ring shape specimens. Previous research has used weaker pipe materials and larger diameters, which facilitates tool making. This state of the art has led to the development of a new approach to testing pipe rings of larger thicknesses and smaller diameters (e = 6.32mm, DN32) as well as defining a better test procedure. Using DIC cameras (Digital Image Corelation), stress state analysis was performed and deformations on the outer surface and side of the ring (pipe wall) were analyzed. The outer surface of the ring and the thinning of the test tube in the axial direction as well as the elongation of the measuring part of the test tube were recorded with two cameras. With the third camera, the lateral side of the specimen was recorded so that the change in the thickness of the ring as well as the occurrence of bending in the radial plane during the test were analyzed. The test results are based on data on deformation, thickness reduction in the axial and radial directions. The test results enable the assessment of the condition of the pipe material and the assessment of its service life. The use of ring-shaped test tubes facilitates production and provides better results compared to the flattening method.

AB  - As pressure equipment is most commonly used in various industrial fields, making manufacturing processes eco-friendlier (e.g., mass reduction of the final product, material and energy savings, etc.) and transitioning to sustain-able production by developing eco-innovative products will have a positive effect on the environment. The aim of this paper is to analyze globe valve housing exposed to internal pressure using full-field experimental 3D digital image correlation (3D-DIC) method and numerical strain and stress data in order to propose improvements for more sustainable development, with respect to practical engineering application of EN standards. The highest von Mises strain values around 0.03% were measured on the point of highest geometrical discontinuity, sphere/cylinder intersection. Stresses of the examined globe valve using numerical and theoretical approach are significantly below material yield limit and allowable stress for internal pressure values of 30 bar, that is significantly higher than nominal operating pressure of 6 bar, proving that structure is over-dimensioned and can be optimized. New experimental procedure development and application in full-field strain analysis contributes to increased valve housing reliability, mass reduction and material and energy savings during manufacturing which directly affects its eco- friendliness, lowers manufacturing price and increases market competitiveness.

Experimental and numerical analyses of an U-bend tube made of an output inter-heater tube after exploitation

AB  - One of the important tasks of evaluating the integrity of mechanical process elements and structures is to determine the local mechanical properties. In this paper, experimental and numerical analyses of the mechanical behavior of an output inter-heater tube, made of 12H1MF heat-resistant steel, was performed after 200,000 h of exploitation. During exploitation, the tube was exposed to various mechanisms of damage including gas corrosion. The tube was cut from a pipe system during reparations of a thermal power plant, and then cold-deformed by bending to obtain a U-bend tube, which was then used in the experiment. For this purpose, a specimen holder made of structural steel S235 was specifically designed to test such a sample. The U-bend tube was then exposed to the external compressive load during the experiment. Experimental research was based on the application of the 3D digital image correlation (DIC), while a finite element method (FEM) was applied in numerical simulation performed by using the Abaqus software package. The 3D DIC is an optical and contactless experimental method that allows measurements of displacement fields and deformations of geometrically complex structures. The Aramis system was used for the experimental analysis as well as for verification of the numerical model. During the experiment, the von Mises strain field was measured at the top of the U-bend tube, in the tightening zone, as it represents a critical place for crack initiation and propagation during the work of an inter-heater. Based on the obtained results and a comparative analysis of experimental and numerical values of the von Mises strain field at the U-bend tube, deviation of the model predictions of about 18 % was determined. The FEM predicted smaller values of the von Mises strain field compared to the DIC method. This is the result of an incomplete geometry applied in the model due to deformation that occurred in the bend zone of the U-bend tube, loss of material and the tube surface damage due to the influence of gas corrosion during 200,000 h of exploitation. Experimental analysis has confirmed that the U-bend tube, after 200,000 h of exploitation, can remain in service even if it is damaged due to the effect of gas corrosion.

INFLUENCE OF THE SIZE AND POSITION OF WINDOWS BLINDS ON HEAT LOSSES

AB  - Heat losses in buildings have high influence on construction materials choice, size and quality of windows, doors or glass roofs and the construction processes. For a 10 floor-building, heat losses through windows are almost half of the losses of the whole building. With that in mind, improving the thermal protection of windows and other glass surfaces can increase energy savings. One example for thermal protection increase is using blinds on windows. Influence of the size and position of the windows blinds on heat losses is analysed in this paper. A mathematical model was developed and experimental study was conducted to obtain the values of thermal losses in the function of the position and size of the blind openings. The obtained results showed the ratio of the amount of heat for the window with and without a blind. According to the measured values, the
thermal insulation is increased for about 18 % on the window with blinds. The use of the blinds is profitable and the mentioned savings can contribute to the lower energy consumption in house heating and cooling.

AB  - In this paper, a multi-objective optimization of geothermal water desalination plant with ejector refrigeration system is proposed. The multi-objective antlion optimization algorithm is used. Six different optimization scenarios were performed with economic (total investment cost and profit) and thermodynamic (exergy destruction) objectives for refrigerants R11, R114 and R717. Multi-criteria decision making with integrated AHP and PROMETHEE II approach is executed for evaluating the most suitable design project and refrigerant. Besides economic and thermodynamic criteria, three additional environmental criteria were used: ozone depletion potential, global warming potential and toxicity. The sensitivity analysis showed that water desalination plant with R114 refrigerant and coefficient of performance 0.507 is optimal for a wide range of criteria weights. A similar result of the optimal design point is obtained in scenarios where only economic objective functions were considered during the optimization procedure. Furthermore, it is proved that R114 Pareto front is more optimal in comparison with other refrigerants.

AB  - To ensure reliability of pressure vessels during service it is necessary to (1) know properties of materials used in their design and (2) evaluate vessels' behaviour under different working conditions with satisfying accuracy. Due to various technical and/or technological requirements, nozzles are usually welded on vessel's shell producing geometrical discontinuities that reduce the safety factor. To evaluate their influence, vessels with two different nozzles were experimentally studied and critical areas for crack initiation have been identified by 3D Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method. After that, the numerical analysis of equivalent 3D finite element model was performed and obtained results were compared with experimental values. In the most critical area, next to the one of the nozzles, crack was initiated and then growth of the damage was simulated using extended finite element method (XFEM). In this paper evaluation of stress intensity factors (SIFs) along crack path is presented, as well as the most probable direction of the crack propagation on the shell. Based on SIFs values, critical length of the crack and number of pressure cycles to the final failure were estimated.

AB  - Different applications of a variable area convergent-divergent nozzle are found in various parts of the industry. This paper presents the development of a new design methodology for a variable area convergent-divergent nozzle, to maintain constant nozzle area ratio for different values of mass flow rates. The validation of the presented model was carried out on an example supersonic ejector using experimental, numerical and analytical data. Analytical (one dimensional) and computational fluid dynamics models showed satisfactory prediction performance in comparison with the experiment. The average entrainment ratio error was between 10% and 7%, respectively. Results confirmed that the velocity of the primary fluid at the nozzle outlet is in accordance with the one dimensional analysis. Although disturbances (strong and weak shock waves) are visible, their effects are negligible. Also, supersonic ejector performances are presented through relations between entrainment ratio, outlet pressure and spindle position. Disadvantages of variable area nozzle utilization in ejector applications are emphasized.

AB  - Pressure equipment has widespread application in various industrial sectors. Due to this variety, pressure equipment can have complex structure and is subjected to different working loads (static, dynamic, thermal etc.) during the operation life that can cause failure. Strain measurement of complex structure has always been a huge challenge for researchers. Conventional experimental methods (e.g. strain gauges) give only limited data sets regarding measurement on critical areas with high geometrical discontinuities. 3D Digital Image Correlation method is an optical method that enables full-field strain measurement of critical areas on structural components. Sphere/cylinder junction is common geometrical discontinuity on pressure equipment and globe valve housing was chosen as representative example. In this paper, globe valve housing was subjected to external axial loading caused by pipeline dilatations. Highest measured von Mises strain values around 0.15 % were recorded on cylinder/sphere intersection. Determining strain state of critical areas enables better understanding of complex structures and provides an opportunity for further development and improvement for practical industrial application.

Modeling, simulation and PI gain-scheduling controller optimization of water desalination plant with liquid jet vacuum ejector

AB  - This paper gives a novel approach to modeling, simulation and control of a water desalination plant. The process in desalination plant is based on a vapour compression acquired by a liquid jet vacuum ejector. Optimal plant design for a nominal operating point is obtained using the combination of the multi-objective optimization with the multi-criteria decision making. Furthermore, the dynamic steady-state model which includes a liquid jet vacuum ejector, pump, valve and pressure vessel is developed. Moreover, for the different values of inlet temperature and water mass flow rate (disturbances) the optimal regimes of system actuators are found by the antlion algorithm, with respect to the profit maximization. Also, the control-oriented model of the system has been developed and linearized around different operating points to design a gain-scheduling nonlinear proportional integral controller. Additionally, it is demonstrated that the proposed controller is capable of guiding the system through the optimal states under the influence of disturbances. A map of the controller gains is determined by extensive simulation minimizing the appropriate cost functions. High-fidelity model has been numerically simulated in order to demonstrate that the developed method provides the desired design specifications while minimizing operational costs.

AB  - U radu je prikazan metod modelovanja, simulacije i upravljanja postrojenja za desalinizaciju vode. Postrojenje za desalinizaciju vode spada u klasu postrojenja koje uparavaju slanu vodu korićenjem vodeno-parnog ejektora. U cilju validacije rezultata simulacije dinamičkog modela, razvijenog u cilju upravljanja, rezultati stacionarne simulacije postrojenja su korišćeni. Dodatno razvijen je PI kontroler koji dovodi sistem do željenih stanja pri uticaju poremećaja. Linearizovani model postrojenja je verfikovan pomoću nelinearnog dinamičkog modela. Pokazano je da navedeni pristup daje zadovoljavajuće rezultate.
AB  - In this paper, modelling, simulation and control of water desalination plant is presented. The desalination plant is based on vapour compression method acquired utilizing a liquid jet ejector. Nonlinear steady-state model is developed in order to verify simplified dynamic model for control purposes. Furthermore, to design PI controller capable of guiding the system through desired states under the influence of disturbances, the linearized model of the plant has been developed and verified applying the nonlinear dynamical model. It is shown that presented approach can deliver satisfying model and tracking results.

AB  - Globe valves are one of the most widely used industrial fittings. Due to variety in globe valve application, different loadings occur in its working life (static, dynamic, thermal etc.), but the most dominant one is internal pressure. This paper presents the analysis of standard globe valve housing under the internal pressure using 3D Digital Image Correlation method, Finite element analysis and calculation according to EN standard. Experimental analysis was focused on determining mechanical properties of critical areas, i.e. on local areas of globe valve housing with high geometrical discontinuities. Experimental system consists of cameras for 3D displacement and strain analysis and software Aramis. Models designed using FEA are verified through the experiment, while at the same time the possibility of using Aramis system for these constructions has been proven. It is found that the predictions from the model agree well with experimental results as the result differences between two methods in the area of the highest strain values vary below 30 %, which is satisfactory for engineering application. Experimental and numerical results demonstrate that the experimental method is adequate for solving geometrically complex problems and provides an opportunity for further development and improvement for practical industrial application.

AB  - Klanična industrija produkuje velike količine otpadnih voda, koje ugrožavaju i degradiraju prirodne prijemnike - recipijente, obzirom da se otpadne vode najčešće ispuštaju bez bilo kakvog oblika obrade ili prečišćavanja. Otpadne vode klanične industrije sa sobom nose fekalije, slamu, neprerađenu stočnu hranu, razne stomačne izlučevine, krv, masnoće, razne čvrste otpatke i druge prisutne organske materije. Mnoga primenjena tehničko-tehnološka rešenja u cilju sprečavanja ugrožavanja prirodnih recipijenata nisu dala adekvatne rezultate sa ekološkog aspekta. Rekonstrukcijom jednog sistema za predtretman klaničnih otpadnih voda primenom tehničko-tehnološkog rešenja ejektor - pumpa, ne samo da su dobijeni dobri rezultati zahtevani po projektu, nego su ukazali i na mogućnost njihove primene kod mnogih tipova agroindustrijskih otpadnih voda, naročito kod sve brojnijih malih agroindustrijskih pogona.
AB  - Slaughter industry produces large amounts of waste water, which endanger and degrade the natural recipients - recipients, given that the waste vode najčešće discharged without any form of treatment or purification. Wastewater slaughter industry carry faeces, straw, unprocessed animal feed, various stomach secretions, blood, fat, a variety of solid waste and other organic matter present. Many applied technical and technological solutions in order to prevent harming the recipients are not given adequate results from the ecological aspect. The reconstruction of a system for pre-treatment and slaughter waste water by applying technological solutions ejector - pump, not only have obtained good results required by the project, but also pointed to the possibility of their use in many types of agro-industrial waste water, especially with the growing number of small agro-industrial drive .

AB  - Nanošenje zaštitnih prevlaka na mašinske delove nalazi sve širu i učestaliju
primenu u svim granama industrije. Osnovna funkcija zaštinih prevlaka je
produženje radnog veka mašinskih delova povećanjem otpornosti na eroziju,
abraziju, oksidaciju, koroziju itd. Hladna metalizacija je postupak nanošenja
dodatnog materijala u obliku praha u čvrstom stanju, na osnovni materijal
(podlogu). Čestice dodatnog materijala dovode se u struju gasa koji se kreće
velikim brzinama, pri čemu je temperatura struje gasa obavezno niža od
temperature topljenja dodatnog materijala. Zbog relativno niske temperature
u procesu nanošenja, ovim postupkom je moguće nanositi materijale koji su
podložni oksidaciji (Al, Cu, Ti itd.) i razlaganju (WC, SiC itd.) na visokim
temperaturama. U poređenju sa ostalim postupcima metalizacije, hladna
metalizacija izdvaja se kao postupak sa najnižom temperaturom u procesu
nanošenja prevlaka. Hladna metalizacija nalazi sve širu primenu u industriji,
pre svega zbog izuzetnog kvaliteta dobijenih prevlaka. U ovom radu opisan
je princip rada kao i područje primene postupka hladne metalizacije.
