AB - A numerical analysis of welded connection between two steel structures is performed with the usage of the finite element approach. A frame stage‐like structure is placed between the main horizontal girders of the structure of the hall. A visual inspection of the frame revealed numerous irregularities of welds which brought demand for redesign and overall check. The emphasis in this paper is comparative calculation of initial and redesigned welded end‐joints, without imposing the optimal technical solution. It is used modern and particular finite element software for calculation of welded joints. The values of stresses in the welded joint as well in plates and members are lower than the permitted values for both models. However, the influence on the main structure is reduced with redesigned technical solution. The level of stresses is lower along with reduction of rotational stiffness of the joint. This can be considered as a relief to the main girders of the hall structure and should be a cost and a goal for supporting any additional structure.

AB - The paper deals with strength of load-carrying fillet welds with application of two different approaches. First one is calculation by classical/scholar approach while second one is devoted to finite element analysis. The classical approach is concerned with national and European engineering practice. The finite element approach includes the application of particular tool which preserves main recommendations from modern postulations in design of joints. The object of interest is welded beam-to-column joint with different structural elements and the stresses are obtained for two models. It is investigated correlation of results of weld stresses from both the approaches. Direct matching of results was neither expected nor found but basic correlation is revealed within the joint behaviour under loadings. Considering finite element approach as prevailing, its advantage is clearly shown throughout inclusion of local effects of plates. However, classical approach is essential for proper understanding of joint behaviour and should be always the first step in structural analysis. The usage of at least two different approaches is one way of improving safety checks in engineering and stands for purpose of validation or verification of design.

AB - The paper discusses the history of belt conveyors over the years until the development of the modern belt conveyor at the end of the 19th century. The roots of conveyor systems and principles of operation go back to the ancient times, with a first trace of primitive belt conveyor found in the beginning of the 17th century. The early belt conveyors can be found in the late 18th century due to the invention of Oliver Evans in USA and in the 19th century, by Lyster in England and Lopatine in Russia. The first modern solution of the heavy-duty belt conveyor was proposed by Thomas Robins in the last decade of the 19th century, with the basic principles of operation which remain unchanged up to now.

AB - This paper gives survey on up-to-date studies which deal with numerical simulations of bolted end-plate moment connections. The selection is performed with the aim to cover different design concepts which reflect the problem of joint behaviour in general. Main characteristics of joint design and corresponding analysis features are presented in tabular form intended to serve as guidance for appropriate modelling of bolted
end-plate connections. Consequently, the procedure for conducting numerical simulation in proper mode is proposed by authors. An illustrative example-case study of analysis of a extended stiffened end-plate bolted beam-to-column joint is shown. The design case is modelled with two finite element software packages which have different approaches and levels of complexity. Finally, the analytical calculation of this joint is done according to Eurocode 3 with the aim of validation. The moment-rotation curve, as a basis in this field, is obtained for each model. The results from numerical simulations with both the approaches are in good correlation. Basic characteristics of two mentioned design approaches are also explained as an orientation for engineers and reserchers in this field.

AB - The evolution of belt conveyors, as an important type of continuous conveying machinery,
is examined here in a historical perspective. For this purpose, the selected period is from
the ancient time, i.e. occurrence of conveying equipment, and up to the end of the nineteenth
century. The basic postulation of a modern machine, including conveyors, is often
interlinked to that of its ancestor, which may be simple and primitive. Ancient machines
and principles of their work were the basis for later improvements which also brought the
inventions in engineering. For instance, Archimedes lifted water to high altitude with a
screw, which was regarded as the ancestor of today’s screw conveyor and essentially his
design has not changed since then. Bucket elevators also have their predecessors dating
back to ancient times. In the concrete case of belt conveyors, a first trace can be found in
the beginning of the seventeenth century, even classified as primitive example. During the
Industrial Revolutions, various machines, such conveyors, appeared. The first modern-like
belt conveyors are dedicated to the late eighteenth century due to the invention of Oliver
Evans in USA and to the nineteenth century, by Lyster in England, Lopatine in Russia and
Thomas Robins in USA. The technical solutions developed by the end of the nineteenth
century were forerunners of the today’s belt conveyors, while the key operational principles
have not changed.

Some aspects on quantification of the wear at steel wire ropes

AB - Steel ropes are widely used in material handling machines. The excessive wear of wires is often presented as a type of rope degradation. One of many indicators of the wear is abrasion, corrosion and fatigue cracks. Within this class of rope degradation, the main representation of wear is wire abrasion in the layers of the external wires. This is especially noticeable at the steel ropes which are operating in the drum devices with multilayer winding and in hoists of mining shafts. Over performed work cycles, the estimation of losses in rope cross-section is important for the calculation of the rope capacity. Abrasive wear of external wires is a relatively easy phenomenon to detect with a qualitative interpretation. However, it is a very difficult phenomenon to quantify. The aim of this article is to address this issue. A brief survey of usual methods for rope inspections is given, which can serve as practical guidance for the engineers in this field. With accompanying case study, it presented the advantages of magnetic method in rope inspections oriented towards measuring the changes of wires within the wear assessment.

AB - The paper deals with the mathematical modelling of the dynamic behavior of the structure of the ship unloader. It is given the procedure for formulation of the reduced dynamic model which retains the main aspects of the behavior of the structure and yet is simple enough to be performed with standard engineering tools. The approach is applied on the real bridge-type grab ship unloader but can also be used on similar complex structures. Initially, the complete structure is modelled with finite element software where the natural frequencies were obtained. This 3D model is reduced to an equivalent plane model of the sea-side part of the boom. The postulation of the analytical approach is based on the model of a simple beam with an overhang where dynamic analysis is concerned with the Rayleigh Ritz method for estimating the adopted admissible functions. The results of the modal analysis of the reduced mathematical model showed a small difference from the results of finite element analysis which stands for the verification of the presented approach.

On the basis of experimental tests, the behaviour of beam-to-column joint with and without stiffener is investigated. The stress distribution and deformation characteristics were determined and discussed with corresponding results of finite element analysis of joint behaviour. Furthermore, the extensive finite element simulations were carried out and the obtained results are discussed in this paper. The main analyzed parameters are the geometrical characteristics of the plates added to the beam-to-column joint. Their influence on joint resistance and stiffness is observed including the possibility of material cost optimization. Overall, the comparison of used approaches confirms their conjoint importance except for the postulation where the stiffener is assumed to behave as a strut in the joint. Also, there are some practical recommendations in design which can be used by engineers.

AB - The end-plate bolted connections are widely used in the construction of metal buildings and steel portal frames and play a crucial role in the safety of steel structures. Studies agreed that joint rotational behavior should be considered in frame analysis due to the fact that majority of these joints are semi-rigid. This paper gives a survey on the progress in this topic, based on the studies in the last decade and main design approaches which are analytical, numerical and experimental. There are noted some principal characteristics of each method, along with some advantages and disadvantages. The illustrative example is given to describe the situation when all the mentioned methods are included on the single joint. It is proposed, as a good practice, to propose analytical model in that way to comply with experimental verification and to use numerical model in the form of validation in the last stages of joint design. Finally, it is noted that joint behavior under monotonic or cyclic loading, within the scope of the ductile failure modes of the joint, can be controlled with the design parameters of the end-plate and bolts.

AB - The paper deals with the structural optimization of the cantilever girder. Standard CAD
optimization tool is used for the model of the main girder on a large jib crane. The objective
function is the minimum weight of the girder subjected to the given payload, while constraint
functions are postulated according to the usual structural rules and regulations. The illustrative
example shows an easy way of optimization which can be used in everyday CAD designing practice.
It gives practical recommendations in the selection of variable parameters. The obtained results
indicate that the algorithm is time-saving when compared to the analytical approach, especially
when variability of the section needs to be included in the design.

AB - This paper deals with the local bending stresses at the steel runway beams
made of HEA sections. Some aspects of this structural problem are
considered here, with usage of finite element analysis (FEA). There are
presented three different models and several load cases to obtain the
values of local bending stresses which enable the comparison with the
results from adopted EN regulative. Specially, it is considered the possible
superposition of stresses for adjacent wheel loads. This is done due to
restriction in regulative which deals with the geometry of trolley vs. beam
width. It is confirmed some inconsistencies in current regulative, along
with the occurrence of affected zone in section with possible higher values
of stresses near the web. Without consideration of volume, it is noted that
distance of adjacent wheels has influence on the level of local stresses.

The prying effects in the joint are considered for the comparative analysis with analytical model of bolt calculation. There are observed three basic models of the joint which reflect variation of the joint stiffness, along with the cases of different parameters of end-plate thickness. It is shown that several parameters have effects on the stresses at the joint and need to be considered in the structural analysis of the frame structures. Also, there are given some recommendations for practical usage for the design of this kind of joints.

AB - The paper deals with experimental study of the stresses at the bolted end-plate moment connection. The design parameters are adopted to include prying effects in joint. A stress level is obtained in the elements where the highest values occur in the tension zone of the end-plate. The accompanied finite element analysis is performed for comparing purposes with experimental results. It is shown that end-plate thickness should be the unavoidable joint parameter in structural analysis of frame-like structures.

AB - The problem of torsion due to horizontal inertial effects is considered at cantilever beam with variable I-section. Linear variation of height is concerned as most practical one for the design of cantilever beams. The solution for adopted cases of beams is obtained numerically, according to the complexity of the given ordinary differential equation which deals with pure torsion along with warping torsion. The models are based on known tailor-made beams with possibility for application in design of jib cranes, as practical aspect of this work. The comparison of results is done with uniform cantilever beam models which can be used as one way for verification of stress state of variable cantilever beams subjected to bending with torsion. The obtained results show corresponding advantages of usage of variable sections.

abstract = "The problem of torsion of the I-section beam is considered in this work,
with emphasis on the variable cross section of the beam. Linear variation
of height is concerned as most practical one for the design of cantilever
beams. The solution for adopted cases of beams is obtained numerically,
according to the given ordinary differential equation which deals with pure
torsion along with warping torsion. The models are based on practical
tailore-made beams. The comparison of results is done with uniform
cantilever beam models which can be used as one view for stress check of
cantilever beams subjected to bending with torsion.",

AB - Wear as a tribological process has a major influence on the reliability and life of rolling bearings. Field examinations of bearing failures due to wear indicate possible causes and point to the necessary measurements for wear reduction or elimination. Wear itself is a very complex process initiated by the action of different mechanisms, and can be manifested by different wear types which are often related. However, the dominant type of wear can be approximately determined. The paper presents the classification of most common bearing damages according to the dominant wear type, i.e. abrasive wear, adhesive wear, surface fatigue wear, erosive wear, fretting wear and corrosive wear. The wear types are correlated with the terms used in ISO 15243 standard. Each wear type is illustrated with an appropriate photograph, and for each wear type, appropriate description of causes and manifestations is presented. Possible causes of rolling bearing failure are used for the fault tree analysis (FTA). It was performed to determine the root causes for bearing failures. The constructed fault tree diagram for rolling bearing failure can be useful tool for maintenance engineers.

AB - Excavation, transport and spreading of barren soil and crude ore are being performed by a number of machines during the continuous production process at excavation sites, such as: bucket-wheel excava-tor; conveyor and spreader (so called ECS system). Failure of any machine in the technological chain leads to the failure of the whole system, and therefore it should be considered a structure with a serial connection. In this paper the results of non-destructive tests performed at welded joints and parent material (vi-sual testing, penetrant testing, ultrasonic testing, radiographic testing, hardness testing) on the basis of which the state analysis of components of the damaged structure, integrity evaluation of braces of the cutting and discharge boom and homogeneity of welded joints of newly _formed structures of the spreader A2Rs B 5500.55 + BRs at the excavation site 'Drnmo' near Kostolac, Serbia were perfor-med, are presented. Taking into account the fact that the user of the spreader does not own the design and technical documentation, all tests and researches presented in this paper were performed under the assumption that the lattice structures of both cutting and discharge boom were made of structural steels £955 and 5235, in accordance with standard EAT 10027-1.

AB - This paper presents an investigation of the accident which occurred during startup of the extending structure from the transport position. In order to clarify the causes of crack occurrence along almost the entire surface of the lever cross-section, the authors performed visual, experimental (chemical composition, tensile properties, microhardness) as well as metallographic examinations. Stress states in the critical zone are defined by applying the finite element method (FEM). Based on the investigation results it was concluded that the lever breakdown is predominantly caused by both the 'operating-in' defect (the malfunction of the limit switch) and the 'manufacturing-in' defect (poor weld quality). The investigation results presented in this paper are important because same or similar problems could arise in supporting structures of various types of transportation, construction and mining machines.

work, in order to represent guidance for designers of material handling
equipment. Safety requirements for beams are implemented in given
algorithm. Specially, the beam model of monorail crane concerns the
stress, deflection and lateral buckling proof as main considerations in
design of such systems. There are given capacity curves for various I-sections
with respect to desired span of runway which enables fast and
easy adoption of structural elements. Also, they can be used for capacity
estimation of the single girder bridge cranes and other beamlike
structures.

The two-dimensional inertial effects of the moving body are included in derivation of differential equation of motion for the system. Factors as speed, acceleration and suspension characteristics of a moving body are studied, including the influence of structural damping. The obtained results validate the presented approach and can be used in the design process of gantry cranes.

AB - Truck mounted hydraulic cranes are widely used in the timber and in the waste disposal industry. They have a specific design, where dead weight, size in the folded position and the position of the gripper in the folded position are of particularly importance. Functionality of the crane is therefore expressed with load handling capabilities and also with the functionality during road transportation of the payload, when the crane is in the folded position on the truck. For handling
of heavier loads, nowadays mainly two types of cranes are used - the K cranes and the Z cranes. The main advantage of the K cranes is higher load capacity in comparison with the Z cranes when cranes of approximately the same weight are compared. On the other hand the main advantage of the Z cranes is their capability of folding in position, transvers to truck length. In the paper the kinematics of the mechanisms of the characteristic size K and Z cranes are analysed and mutually compared. The main accent is on the discussion about their load capacity.

AB - This paper presents a lumped-mass approach for the approximate determination of the dynamic response of a flexible L-shaped structure with tip mass subjected to a moving load. The load in the form of a force of a constant magnitude moving across the top beam of the L-shaped frame with a constant speed is considered. A two degrees of freedom model is formed, which allows to avoid complex analytic postulations and finite element formulations. The incorporation of the moving load influence on the frame structure is achieved through moving force flexibility influence coefficients. By using the assumed-modes method with polynomial shape functions, the validation of the approach is given.

AB - This paper deals with eigenfrequencies of distributed-parameter system within the form of gantry-like structure with
cantilever part. The individual members of the structure-framework are assumed to be governed by the transverse vibration
theory of Euler-Bernoulli beam. It is obtained postulation of frequency equation while solutions are obtained numerically
with in-house software, for several cases of structures. Also, it is done finite element postulation of the gantry-like structure
as discrete-parameter system for analyzing the free undamped vibrations. Thus, it stands for two folded presentation. It is
done verification of postulated algorithms.

AB - The dynamics of a two‐dimensional gantry crane structure subjected to various types of moving load is examined in this work. First, the classification of gantry cranes is suggested and group of gantry cranes at container terminals are distinguished because of high performances which have tendency to become even better in near future. The analytical approach is introduced in modeling the gantry structure as continuous system with transverse vibrations. However, modern approach, i.e. combined finite element and analytical method is adopted to solve the title problem. Two types of structure of gantry cranes are considered. Three types of trolleys are implemented in calculation, i.e. moving mass, moving oscillator and moving oscillator with swinging payload as original model are considered as moving loads acting upon the structure of the gantry cranes. The interaction between the structure and each moving load model is derived and the governing equations for MDOF systems are obtained. The postulated equations, which are second order differential equations with time dependent coefficients, are solved with direct integration method‐Newmark method. The analysis is applied to two types of gantry cranes and dynamic responses are obtained for both the structure and the trolley. There are studied factors of moving loads such as magnitude, speed, acceleration, deceleration and factors within the trolley structure such as swinging of the payload and spring stiffness. Numerical results reveal that used approach is useful and can draw conclusions for structural design purposes of gantry cranes.

AB - The paper deals with the moving load problems within the structural dynamic analysis of a large gantry crane as high-performance machine. The emphasis is placed on combined method approach, i.e. finite element method and analytical postulations, to obtain the mathematical model of crane. Moving trolley is considered throughout several models: moving force, moving mass, moving oscillator and moving oscillator with swinging object. Each model has characteristics which determine the responses of the crane structure, along with its dynamic properties. The title problem is solved by calculating the forced vibration responses of the two-dimensional framework with time-dependent property matrices and subjected to an equivalent moving load. Improving the moving load models increases complexity as well for postulating as for obtaining the solutions from overall crane model. Comparative presentation of models is shown here with conclusion that leads to an appropriate way of model selection prior to crane problem postulation.
