AB - The paper discusses the history of belt conveyors over the years until the development of the modern belt conveyor at the end of the 19th century. The roots of conveyor systems and principles of operation go back to the ancient times, with a first trace of primitive belt conveyor found in the beginning of the 17th century. The early belt conveyors can be found in the late 18th century due to the invention of Oliver Evans in USA and in the 19th century, by Lyster in England and Lopatine in Russia. The first modern solution of the heavy-duty belt conveyor was proposed by Thomas Robins in the last decade of the 19th century, with the basic principles of operation which remain unchanged up to now.

AB - The auxiliary lifting device is additional device – attachment to the regular
lifting device for lifting unit loads. This particular auxiliary lifting device
has extraordinary design. It is a device with a relatively large lifting
capacity, mechanism for span adjusting and mechanism for rotation
around vertical axis ± 360°. The final design solution has passed through
several modifications. The first design solution had capability of rotating
around vertical axis but the span could be adjusted manually by placing
hooking elements into predefined places along the span of the auxiliary
lifting device. The second design solution represented a mechanized
version of the first design solution in which the span adjustment was
performed mechanized using an electric motor. Further iterations in the
design sustained minor changes and adjustments. The final design solution
was produced and tested in operation.

AB - The evolution of belt conveyors, as an important type of continuous conveying machinery,
is examined here in a historical perspective. For this purpose, the selected period is from
the ancient time, i.e. occurrence of conveying equipment, and up to the end of the nineteenth
century. The basic postulation of a modern machine, including conveyors, is often
interlinked to that of its ancestor, which may be simple and primitive. Ancient machines
and principles of their work were the basis for later improvements which also brought the
inventions in engineering. For instance, Archimedes lifted water to high altitude with a
screw, which was regarded as the ancestor of today’s screw conveyor and essentially his
design has not changed since then. Bucket elevators also have their predecessors dating
back to ancient times. In the concrete case of belt conveyors, a first trace can be found in
the beginning of the seventeenth century, even classified as primitive example. During the
Industrial Revolutions, various machines, such conveyors, appeared. The first modern-like
belt conveyors are dedicated to the late eighteenth century due to the invention of Oliver
Evans in USA and to the nineteenth century, by Lyster in England, Lopatine in Russia and
Thomas Robins in USA. The technical solutions developed by the end of the nineteenth
century were forerunners of the today’s belt conveyors, while the key operational principles
have not changed.

AB - This paper deals with the LCA of a ball bearing used in belt conveyor idler.
Previous work had shown that ball bearing is manufacture intensive
product. Therefore herein conducted LCA is cradle-to-gate analysis and it
was focused on the production stage of the ball bearing. Chromium steel
and stainless steel were considered as ball bearing materials. Results had
shown that chromium steel from the ball bearing has the highest
environmental impact in all impact categories, followed by processes
related to machining of the chromium steel and forging. Change of the
lubricant harmed the environmental properties in this case. Future work
should consider different materials for raceways and balls.

AB - A cradle-to-gate LCA analysis of a small belt conveyor was conducted. Manufacturing stage was analysed from the aspects of environmental impacts and energy consumption. The biggest environmental impact in majority of baseline impact categories is obtained from low-alloyed steel production and electricity consumption during the manufacturing stage, followed by impact of the transport. Ways for possible energy savings regarding manufacturing practice and technologies were proposed later on.

AB - As transportation machines, belt conveyors are part of intralogistics. Intralogistics is branch of
logistics which is a much broader concept. In the field of bulk material handling belt conveyors
are the most common means of transportation of goods. This research is dealing with the life
cycle assessment (LCA) of a bucket wheel excavator (BWE) belt conveyor. It should establish
methodology for LCA analyses of such short and similar types of belt conveyors and their
possible eco and energy efficiency improvements. Generally, this methodology could be applied
on any type of belt conveyors for bulk material handling as well as for solids transportation.
Belt conveyor components were analysed separately within series of simplified LCAs which are
presented in scientific papers. The first analysed component of the belt conveyor was the belt
conveyor idler. The next component of belt conveyor subjected to analysis was the drive pulley.
Further research was focused on analysis of the belt conveyor belting. The most recent analysed
component is belt conveyor electric motor. Previously published paper related to conveyor
design optimization can serve as source of definitions for such terms as sustainability, energy
efficiency and energy savings. Latest research is dealing with summarized results from previous
papers and with simplified LCA of a complete belt conveyor as well. It also contains
recommendations, guidelines and possible solutions for eco and energy efficiency improvements
of such type of belt conveyors. This series of simplified LCAs should provide a basis for further
analysis and more comprehensive complete LCA of the belt conveyor with more powerful
software tools, such as GaBi and SimaPro.

During the trials of the facility belt misalignment issue has occurred. The first measure in the direction of solving this problem was installation of side wheels for belt tracking. Since this didn't solve the problem, another solution is performed that included designing detachable drum rims for guiding the belt.

AB - The paper gives a survey of NDT of steel cord belts. For the purpose of NDT of steel cord belts a laboratory test rig is developed at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Belgrade. Its intended use is nondestructive inspection of steel cord belts with Introcon S 2000 instrument. Axial distance between the drums of transporter is only 1500 mm and it can work with belt widths up to 400 mm. AB - This paper presents simplified life cycle assessment (LCA) of a bucket
wheel excavator (BWE) belt conveyor. Conducted analysis should provide
insight in most of the issues concerning sustainability and environmental
properties of the belt conveyor. This paper also provides recommendations
for improvement of the belt conveyor based on previous studies and
sumarized results based on analysis of complete conveyor presented here.
It should also serve as a starting point for complete LCA of the belt
conveyor. The aim of complete LCA is to provide more detailed review of
environmental properties of the belt conveyor and possible improvements
of its energy efficiency, energy and cost savings. All of these analysis
should serve as a basis for establishing methodology for LCA studies of
any BWE or similar types of belt conveyors.

AB - Truck mounted hydraulic cranes are widely used in the timber and in the waste disposal industry. They have a specific design, where dead weight, size in the folded position and the position of the gripper in the folded position are of particularly importance. Functionality of the crane is therefore expressed with load handling capabilities and also with the functionality during road transportation of the payload, when the crane is in the folded position on the truck. For handling
of heavier loads, nowadays mainly two types of cranes are used - the K cranes and the Z cranes. The main advantage of the K cranes is higher load capacity in comparison with the Z cranes when cranes of approximately the same weight are compared. On the other hand the main advantage of the Z cranes is their capability of folding in position, transvers to truck length. In the paper the kinematics of the mechanisms of the characteristic size K and Z cranes are analysed and mutually compared. The main accent is on the discussion about their load capacity.

The electric motor (EM) is the only component of a belt conveyor that consumes electric energy. Simplified LCA was conducted with the Ecodesign Assistant (EA) and the Ecodesign PILOT (EP) software tools. The EM was recognized as D type product, which is "use intensive" product. Analysis with the EP considers suggested strategies for improvement of the product with the emphasis on the electric energy efficiency improvement.

AB - This paper deals with the simplified life cycle assessment (LCA) of a bucket wheel excavator (BWE) conveyor
belting. Belting is the most important component of a belt conveyor. Simplified LCA was conducted with the Ecodesign
Assistant (EA) and the Ecodesign PILOT (EP) software tools. Conveyor belting was recognised as ABE hybrid type
product, whose 'raw material', 'manufacture' and 'end of life' stages are significant in its life cycle. After the second
iteration, the conveyor belting was recognised as a 'raw material' and 'manufacture' intensive product. Further analysis
considered strategies for possible product improvement suggested by the EP tool.
This particular analysis of conveyor belting is part of a complete LCA of the BWE belt conveyor which should
provide a basis for establishment of the methodology for conducting LCA studies of a BWE or similar types of belt
conveyors.

AB - Prior to conducting complete life cycle assessment of the bucket wheel
excavator's belt conveyor, simplified life cycle assessment of its components has to be
done. One of these components is return belt idler support 0°, which consists of idler
support and three rollers. Simplified life cycle assessment of the idler roller is
conducted with Ecodesign Assistant and Ecodesign PILOT tools. Conducted analysis
has shown that the most significant stage of the idler roller life cycle is raw materials
stage. Suggested strategies provide possible improvements towards more
environmentally friendly and energy efficient idler roller design.

excavator's belt conveyor, simplified life cycle assessment of its components has to be
done. One of these components is return belt idler support 0°, which consists of idler
support and three rollers. Simplified life cycle assessment of the idler roller is
conducted with Ecodesign Assistant and Ecodesign PILOT tools. Conducted analysis
has shown that the most significant stage of the idler roller life cycle is raw materials
stage. Suggested strategies provide possible improvements towards more
environmentally friendly and energy efficient idler roller design.",

AB - Conveyors are machines which typically operate continuously during long periods of time. Even a small increase in energy efficiency leads toward considerable energy savings and therefore improved sustainability. The energy is consumed to overcome dissipative effects and for possible lifting of transported goods. It can be saved only by reducing the dissipative effects. In the paper an example is introduced of two designs of the production machine chain conveyor. The effect of the changes of the design on the energy consumption is established. The dissipative effects are defined using analytical approach which is verified by means of measurements. Improved sustainability in the case of the second design is proven and discussed.

AB - This paper describes current status of modeling energy usage patterns for
PCs, provides insight in their energy consumption, energy costs and CO2
emission. It also provides possible solutions for improving energy
efficiency and energy savings. The study involved analysis of two different
mode settings (High Performance and Power Saver mode) of same
computer and gaming test case study. Usage patterns for both modes were
modeled based on Intel®'s EEP methodology. Workload was simulated
with StressMyPC freeware software. PC energy consumption while
executing workload was measured with Trotec® BX11 measuring device
during 15 days testing period, 8 hours a day. Computer and monitor were
separately observed.

AB - As it is widely known, there are three basic reasons for the bucket wheel excavators subsystems redesign: (1) better customization of the machine versus operating conditions; (2) easier maintenance and (3) failure of the substructure under consideration. The improved design solution of the excavating device, outlined in this paper, was developed to satisfy the first and second reason, while the redesigned bucket wheel boom hoisting system satisfies the third. Thanks to the mentioned redesigns, partial revitalizations of the bucket wheel excavators are realised, leading to considerable increase of the machine's reliability as well as the reliability of the complete surface mining system and, additionally, making the maintenance process easier.

AB - The slewing platform is the fundamental part of the bucket wheel excavator (BWE) structure. The occurrence and propagation of cracks in the zones of the slewing platform mantle holes, may probably lead to BWE collapse. The goals of the study presented in the paper were to: (1) Diagnose the cause of cracks occurrence; (2) Define the reconstruction design of the mantle; (3) Verify the reconstructed structure by numerical-experimental analysis. The identification of the stress-strain state of the mantle is done by applying the finite element method. Experimental stress analysis of the reconstructed mantle's structure is executed two times in the BWE real working conditions, using methods of strain gauges. The maximum measured value of stress is about 10% lower in relation to the calculated value of stress for the studied load case. Speaking from the engineering standpoint, the mentioned deviation is quite acceptable, particularly having in mind the stochastic character of the excavation process. Besides experimental investigations, the validity of the presented reconstruction also unquestionably confirms the mentioned failure-free exploitation, while the BWE excavated more than 2.6 x 10(6) t of coal after the reconstruction.

AB - Stacker ARs 2000 presents the final link in the system for continuous overburden removal in the open pit mine "Kostolac" Serbia. Its superstructure leans on three crawlers of the same length, width and height. During the stacker's travel from the erection site to the open pit mine, three crawler chain links fractured, presenting an indication of the problems that were to occur during exploitation. In fact, after only 1000 working hours (about three months), 30 chain links sustained fractures resulting in direct and indirect costs due to the downtime that substantially diminished the effects of the overburden removal system. The goal of the study presented in the paper was to diagnose the cause of chain link breakdown occurrence. Working stresses in the chain link are defined by applying FEM. Experimental investigations define the chemical composition, the tensile properties, the impact toughness and the macro and microhardness. Metallographic examinations are conducted additionally. Based on the results of the numerical-experimental analysis, it can be concluded that chain link breakdown is predominantly caused by (a) substantial deviation of the mechanical properties of the material with respect to those prescribed by the standard and (b) the existence of macro and microcracks in the material structure.

AB - U radu su prezentirana tri tehnička rešenja nastala tokom realizacije projekta iz programa tehnološkog razvoja. Dva tehnička rešenja predstavljaju unapređenja postojećih mašina - redizajn dvotočkovnih kolica guseničnog kretača i obrtne platforme rotornih bagera. .
AB - This paper presents three technical solutions that have emerged during the realization of the project from the technological development program. Two of these solutions are in fact improvements to the existing machines - the redesign of the crawler two wheel bogie and the slewing platform of the bucket wheel excavator. The application of these solutions enabled safe operation of the surface mining system. The third technical solution is a new product: high - performance mechanized side slipway for river, sea and oversea ships, the performances of which exceed almost doubly those listed as limit ones in the referenced literature. The construction of the 'Bomex 4M' shipyard and the realization of the transport system's original design, significantly raised our country's export possibilities when it comes to shipbuilding. .
