U radu se razmatra semantička motivacija leksema povezanih s pojmom koraka: step, step into, step out, out of step, overstep u engleskom i korak, zakoračiti, iskorak, raskorak i prekoračiti u srpskom jeziku.
The paper purports to explore the semantic motivation behind the polysemy of the lexemes related to the concept of STEP in English and Serbian, namely, step, step into, step out, out of step, overstep in English and korak, zakoračiti, iskorak, raskorak, prekoračiti in Serbian. The extension of meaning and its possible semantic motivation are observed through the prism of cognitive linguistics. The data used in the analysis are excerpted from the representative corpora of English and Serbian. Firstly, it is shown that the patterns of meaning extension of the nouns step and korak are motivated by various elements of the path schema. On the other hand, it is the specific meaning of their semantic derivatives (step into vs. zakoračiti u, step out vs. iskorak, out of step vs. raskorak (između), and overstep vs. prekoračiti) in both languages that stems from the path schema, whereas the general meanings of the derivatives stem from different particles, prepositions or prefixes which they are comprised of, in particular, the containment and verticality schemas. The concluding part discusses possible implications of the obtained findings and compares English and Serbian with respect to these.EN
