AB - The operation of gas generators brings relatively high thermo-mechanical loads on the gas generator structure. The objective of this article is to determine the operating conditions, in terms of mechanical loads at extremely high temperatures in very limited and narrow space, of a multifunctional bulkhead for application on specific kinds of gas generators with back-to-back rotor concept. The paper contains numerical analysis and experimental investigation for determining the loads and behavior of the structure. Numerical analysis indicates that there is significant influence of the Tesla turbine effect on flow parameters. Also, uneven pressure distribution and significant thermal loads are identified. With experimental investigation and subsequent exploitation tests, it was concluded that the presented methodology identifies the operating conditions, truthfully simulates the bulkhead stress state and deformations and that the presented design solution satisfied all demands. Regarding results obtained by these numerical simulations, the innovative design solution for the multifunctional bulkhead was proposed.

AB - This paper presents research related to the tubular combustion chamber of an expendable turbojet. Although annular combustors are dominant at present, tubular combustors are still attractive because they are simpler to produce and require lower amounts of air flow for testing. The objective of this research was to assess the combustor's primary zone configuration, and four configurations were tested to obtain experimental answers for use in future work. The configuration of the combustion chamber is a simple and classic design in line with its expendable purpose. The test methodology was to perform initial testing of the primary and secondary zones under atmospheric conditions using the four configurations, and then to subsequently complete the combustor using the best configuration. The complete combustor was then tested under both atmospheric conditions and working conditions. The results showed that the stability margin was wide enough to cover the combustor's entire working area. The measured efficiency and pressure drop were in very good agreement with the corresponding designed values. The design and testing methodology proposed here could be used for similar scientific and engineering research applications.

AB - Purpose The purpose of this paper is to improve the lubrication and remove as much as possible of the heat generated in the bearing assembly, embedded in the jet engine. Design/methodology/approach To determine the necessary values of the air pressure and oil amount, an experimental approach is used. For that purpose, a custom made test rig is developed. Findings Less amount of oil makes better lubrication conditions, reflected in the smaller temperature of the bearings. Concerning the air pressure, too high and too low air pressure deteriorates the lubrication parameters. An optimum value should be determined experimentally. The influence of oil amount is remarkably bigger than the influence of air pressure. Originality/value This experimental investigation provides an easy and fast way to improve the high-speed bearings lubrication parameters.

AB - High speed bearing assemblies have been always challenging in terms of the heat removal and bearing lubrication. Evolution of these lubrication systems led to the oil-mist concept, which consists of the air under high pressure, together with oil droplets. Too high pressure combined with too much of oil would cause the additional resistance to the rolling elements’ movement, while the low pressure with the small amount of oil wouldn’t be effective in terms of the heat removal and lubrication. In this paper, it is analysed the influence of the air pressure and the amount of oil onto the bearings’ temperature.

AB - If one compares the tip-jet helicopters to the conventional ones, one of the most important disadvantages are the much heavier blades, due to the massive inner channel for operating fluid transport through its structure. This increased blade mass causes a significantly larger centrifugal force that loads the construction of the rotor head, especially the feathering and teetering hinge. The case study of this paper is feathering hinge assembly of teetering rotor head for ultra-light tip-jet unmanned helicopter. The new design solution and structural optimization for such engineering problem is presented in this paper. The described construction solution is developed for a new project of unmanned helicopter Hussar based on the experience and knowledge achieved on the previous helicopters ATRO-X and Hornet.

AB - Metal matrix composites are very inhomogeneous materials, and their properties depend on various parameters (production process, constituents, their interfaces, etc.). The influence of SiC microparticles (40 mu m) reinforcement and graphite macroparticles (200-800 mu m) addition on the mechanical properties of Al-Si A356 alloy, produced by compocasting, has been assessed using macro- and nanoscale measurements of hardness and modulus of elasticity. The Al makes over 90 wt% of the A356 alloy, so the nanoscale measurements were performed on different alpha phase regions on each material (core of alpha phase, eutectic alpha phase, and alpha phase near the phase boundaries alpha phase/secondary phases). The results showed that there is no direct correlation between mechanical properties on macro- and nanoscale. The nanoscale results also showed that the secondary phases (SiC and graphite particles) can have significant effect on the mechanical properties on the atomic level, i.e. in the alpha phase regions very close to the secondary phases.

AB - This paper presents the methodology for estimation of power delivery and efficiency of the tip-jet helicopter propulsion system. The main advantage of the tip-jet helicopter is the absence of heavy transmission and tail rotor, but if compared to conventional helicopters, it has significantly lower efficiency. The crucial parameter that impacts the performances of the tip-jet helicopter is a propulsion force at the end of the blade. The analytical and numerical calculations with results for prediction of this propulsion force are presented in this paper. The case study is the ATRO-X tip-jet helicopter. Its propulsion system is driven by the gas-generator Phoenix-100, as a power source, which generates propulsion force by ejecting the hot combustion products through the nozzles at the blades tips.

AB - Polymer based composite sliding bearings are increasingly applied in many industries, due to their economic (usually low cost of production) and technical (good tribological properties) benefits. In order to predict their life cycle, it is necessary to perform numerous experiments and evaluate their wear rate. This is generally quite expensive and time consuming. By applying only one series of the experiments and determining Archard’s wear coefficient, and embedding it into the code of the Ansys software, it is possible to simulate the wear, and thus save the time and the financial resources. This paper explains the procedure of the wear simulation in case of known Archard’s coefficient, for sliding bearings made of PTFE polyamide composite material in contact with shaft of steel. The output of the simulation is the contact pressure in relation of time and the amount of worn volume for 3 revolutions of the shaft.

AB - Purpose This paper aims to present the methodology to determine Archard's wear coefficient. By applying this coefficient into the numerical simulation of wear, it is possible to predict wear without long lasting and usually expensive experiments. Design/methodology/approach To determine necessary particles of Archard's equation and calculate wear coefficient K, an experimental investigation is proposed. Afterwards, the wear simulation is executed in FEM software ANSYS 18.1. Analytical method is offered to determine worn volume for cylinder-in-cylinder contact, based on "inclination" of inner cylinder. Findings Comparing the value of Archard's coefficient obtained by this experimental investigation with the values from the literature for the similar materials, high correlation is noted. Furthermore, numerically calculated contact pressure is confirmed with analytical method. Trend of pressure decrease due to wearing process, as well as due to increase of contact surface is observed. Practical implications - Since the prediction of the wear is closely related to the life cycle assessment of bearings, and the machines in general, it has significant practical importance for designers. Originality/ value - Determination of Archard's coefficient is usually performed by conventional pin-on-disk tribometers. This methodology offers a different approach for the determination of Archard's wear coefficient for cylinder-in-cylinder contact, which is convenient for shaft-sliding bearing contact.

AB - This paper describes a new approach for measuring the axial force on a turbo-jet engine rotor from the Phoenix family. The axial force occurs due to pressure distribution from the operating fluid along the surfaces of the rotor structure. The case study is the Phoenix 100 turbo-jet engine which is specific because it has a high axial force that loads a relatively small, high speed bearings set. In order to define the maintenance period of the bearing system, it was crucial to measure this force. Since the conventional and commercial sensors were not applicable to this construction, a specific solution was created and implemented in the acquisition system and experimentally verified during the engine run on its test stand.

AB - Prediction and calculation of wear of the mechanical components in contact is one of the most important tasks in modern engineering. Due to time consumptive experiments and quite expensive test rig, it became even more challenging to evaluate wear by means of the computer simulation instead of the real experiments. With rapid improvement of the computer resources, this task became more realistic, and the results are more concurrent to those obtained by experiments. Since the most of the solvers evaluate wear by means of the Archard's equation, to perform the simulation it is mandatory to determine Archard's coefficient K. This paper provides necessary steps, experimental investigations and measurements in order to calculate Archard's coefficient K, as an input value for the simulation of wear of the polymer-based composite sleeve bearings.

AB - The dynamic behavior of machines which rotate at extreme high speeds is crucial for stable and long operation. In design process some dynamics calculation must be taken into account to avoid potential operation near resonance areas. This paper considers dynamic analysis of the high speed reducer, designed together with the turbo-shaft engine. Resonances can occur when frequency of rotation and teeth mesh frequency are close to gear pair in mesh natural frequency, to the shafts natural frequencies and to the other parts natural frequencies. Problems can be avoided by translating resonant areas to higher or lower level of frequency by changing some design parameters, mass, stiffness and by variation of the stiffness of bearing supports. The paper presents the approaches to natural frequencies identification for the example of high speed reducer design. Some examples of design solutions, especially for elastic bearing supports and their experimental testing are also presented.

AB - Turboshaft engines, as the rule, contains gear transmission unit - reducer and belong to the group of drive systems with the name motor-reducer. These are the compact and autonomous assemblies for various applications. In the case of turboshaft engine in combination with high speed reducer, arise the set of phenomenon which has to be solved. Majority of them are in relation to reducer protection of overheating and of gears and bearings failures. The article contains analysis of heat sources, heat transfer through design structure and heat taking out in order to maintain acceptable temperature level of reducer lubricant. Theoretical discussions are supported with various experimental results and testing procedures, including analytic calculations. The set of design solutions for reducer protection when reducer located in the area of hot gas flow, is the main content. The case study is innovative design of turboshaft motor-reducer with free turbine which provides flexible operation and compact design structure.

abstract = "Turboshaft engines, as the rule, contains gear transmission unit - reducer and belong to the group of drive systems with the name motor-reducer. The case study is innovative design of turboshaft motor-reducer with free turbine which provides flexible operation and compact design structure.",

AB - Wear intensity is very important in terms of determining life cycle of machine elements. Experimental analysis of wear factor of certain material in contact with other specific materials are inevitable for this prediction. This paper provides two methods of determination of wear factor of polymer based sliding bearings – volume loss method and mass loss method. Volume loss method is based on capturing wall thickness before and after wearing process. The capturing was performed by means of 3D microscope. On the other hand, mass loss method is based on measuring mass of bearing sample before and after wearing. This measuring was performed by means of high accuracy balancing device. Afterwards, it was performed comparison of the results by connecting mass and volume through density. The tested specimen is sliding bearing of PTFE-Polyamide composite. The wearing was performed on the machine USL 5-30. Operational parameters are: velocity - 1m/s, pressure - 1MPa and sliding distance - 20000 m.

AB - Tankozide cilindrične strukture imaju veoma visoku primenu u industriji.
AB - Thin-walled cylindrical shells are commonly used in numerous branches of industry. Since they are subjected to axial load, the most common cause of their failure is buckling. This paper provides numerical analysis and experimental verification of the buckling of the thin-walled aluminium alloy cylindrical shell with special regard to the influence of dent, positioned in the middle of the shell. Numerical simulation was performed using ANSYS 16.2, and experimental verification was performed by means of hydraulic press Armavir, PSU-50, which was used to subject the specimen to the increasing axial load until the occurrence of buckling. Comparing the results it was concluded that there is significant decrease of the buckling resistance if compared the values of the specimen with no dent, and the specimen with 2 mm deep dent. On the contrary, resistance of the 2 mm and 4 mm dented specimen is quite similar. Position and shape of the deformations occurred due to buckling are matching if experimental and numerical results are compared.

AB - Self-lubricating sliding bearings are widely used in numerous industrial applications, primary regarding their specific lubrication mechanism. This lubrication mechanism is a main advantage compared with classical sliding bearings, where their production is not so complicate and makes lower price. This kind of bearing could be simple to assembly and in operating produce less noise and vibrations. According to their material and type of operating, self-lubricating sliding bearings could operate with oil (grease) in its own material structure or even without any amount of lubricant. Besides numerical analysis and calculations, at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Belgrade numerous experimental investigations of those bearings have been conducted, regarding own laboratory with test rig. This paper presents only selected results of those experiments, where portable DAQ acquisition with LabVIEW software tool was applied.

AB - A prediction of crack propagation is subject of research of many scientists. Understanding crack occurrence and propagation could save lives (i.e. in airplane industry), or at least reduce the costs occurred by unexpected failures and stoppages. In this paper it is provided a brief theoretical background of the crack propagation regarding to stress intensity factor, and simulation of crack propagation through a planar plate made of steel with the middle positioned cylindrical hole, by means of Abaqus software. In addition, it is performed calculation of stress intensity factors with MORFEO, software that could be implemented onto Abaqus.

AB - Only 12% of the total energy of the fuel finds its way to the driving wheels, while 15% of it is being dissipated as mechanical, mainly frictional losses. These numbers could be improved by applying methods of reparation and regeneration of engine parts, which are subject of this paper. If it is taken into account the time elapsed between ordering and delivery of the new engine, the price of it including import taxes, it is economically justified to do regeneration of the worn components instead of ordering the new one. In this paper are explained the most common damages of IC engine parts, diagnostics and possible solutions for their regeneration.

AB - Polytetrafluroethylene (PTFE) is currently finding increasing utility due to its unique properties like high chemical resistivity, low coefficient of friction and high temperature stability. However, PTFE exhibits poor wear resistance, especially abrasion. The wear resistance of PTFE can be significantly improved by addition of suitable reinforcement (filler) materials. Among the most common filler materials are glass fibers, graphite, carbon and bronze. In this paper, it is presented a review of tribological properties of composite materials with PTFE matrix and above mentioned filler materials.
