AB - The nickel (Ni) coatings without and with embedded (5-7 vol. %) cubic boron nitride (c-BN) nanoparticles (10 nm in diameter) were deposited on carbon steel substrate by an electroless plating process. Coatings were tested in as-deposited and heat-treated (heating at 300 degrees C for 6 h) conditions. Coating structure characterisation was performed, as well as hardness and roughness measurements. Friction properties were tested in dry and in water (seawater) lubricated contact conditions, with bronze as a counter-body material. Both static and kinetic coefficients of friction were measured for two different surface texture preparations (initial and working). The first surface texture simulated the running-in condition, and the second surface texture represented the steady-state conditions. The enhancement of the abrasive and erosive wear resistance of heat-treated electroless Ni coatings with embedded c-BN nanoparticles was already proved in our previous studies. This study aims to investigate those influences on friction properties of electroless Ni coatings in different sliding conditions. The results show that the coefficients of friction did not differ too much between the coatings and that the surface roughness and presence of seawater had a much stronger influence.

AB - Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the biobased (rapeseed) oil with the addition of different amounts of metal-containing additive in a steel-bronze tribological system. The additional purpose was to find the optimal value of the additive. Design/methodology/approach This paper exposes experimental results of the performance characteristics (coefficient of friction (COF), working temperature and wear) of the biolubricant based on rapeseed oil. The amount of commercial metal-containing additive in formulated lubricant was 1, 1.5, 3 and 5 wt.%. All results were compared with the results obtained for the base rapeseed oil. Two different tribometers were used, with the same tribosystem elements materials (bronze and steel). COF experiments were performed under four different normal loads and fixed sliding speed and time. Temperature and wear were continuously monitored. Findings Results showed that the metal-containing additive in rapeseed oil reduced all monitored characteristics. It was also found that the dependence of all characteristics on the amount of additive is nonlinear and that there is an optimal value of it. Originality/value Owing to growing environmental concerns, vegetable oil-based lubricants and other biodegradable lubricants are expanding their area of application. Currently, one of the most widely used vegetable oil is rapeseed oil. The metal-containing additive used in this study is previously investigated as an addition to mineral- and synthetic-based oils. There are very few studies that investigate its influence on the vegetable oil-based lubricants. In addition, there is no comparative investigation of its influence on several performance characteristics (COF, temperature and wear).

AB - The investigated metal-metal composites were produced by the compocasting process using the standard zinc-aluminium alloy ZA-27 as a matrix and titanium microparticles (particle size approx. 10 mu m) as a secondary phase. The amount of Ti microparticles was 1 and 2 wt%. Small amount (0.5 wt%) of alumina nanoparticles (particle size 20-30 nm) is also used, as reinforcement. The aim of the presented research was to evaluate the possibility of producing such composites, as well as to see the effect of the addition of Ti microparticles and/or alumina nanoparticles on their microstructure, mechanical and tribological properties. Microstructure and worn surfaces analysis were performed by scanning electron microscope, and mechanical properties were analysed through the Vickers microhardness values. Tribological properties were determined on tribometer with line contact, under mixed lubrication conditions. Microstructural analysis showed that the distribution of Ti microparticles has been improved due to the addition of Al2O3 nanoparticles. This better distribution did not show any significant influence on the microhardness values or coefficient of friction values of the composites, but it induced higher wear resistance of metal-metal composites reinforced with Al2O3 nanoparticles. Better distribution and higher amount of Ti particles increased the surface area of the matrix that was protected with Ti particles during sliding and reduced wear.

AB - Metal matrix nanocomposites represent a relatively new class of material, which is still being extensively investigated. Most of the studies, however, are devoted to aluminium- or magnesium-based nanocomposites. A limited number of studies focus on zinc alloy base nanocomposites, with fewer still concentrating on zinc alloy base micro-nanocomposites. In addition, most of the tribological studies investigate adhesive or abrasive wear resistance, whereas studies of erosive wear resistance lag well behind. It was previously shown that the presence of nanoparticles in ZA-27 alloy-based nanocomposites led to a slight increase in erosive wear resistance. Upon discovering that, the aim became to produce micro-nanocomposites that would retain the positive effect of nanoparticles, while further elevating performance, by combining microparticles with nanoparticles. The ZA-27 alloy-based micro-nanocomposites were reinforced with 3 wt. % Al2O3 microparticles (particle size approx. 36 mu m) and with four different amounts (0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 1 wt. %) of Al2O3 nanoparticles (particle size 20-30 nm). Tested materials were produced by the compocasting process, with mechanical alloying pre-processing. Solid particle erosive wear testing, with particle impact angle of 90 degrees, showed that all micro-nanocomposites had significantly increased wear resistance in comparison to the reference material.

AB - In recent years there is a small but increasing number of articles presenting and/or analyzing the scientific production from discrete geographical regions on a certain scientific topic. These articles applied the so-called bibliometric methods in order to evaluate the contribution of different countries in a scientific research field. In the present work, the research output of all countries in Southeastern Europe on the scientific field of composites tribology is presented by using bibliometric indicators such as the total number of publications and citations, the average number of citations per publication, and the h-index. Analysis spans the last ten years and the required scientific data in order to calculate the bibliometric indicators were retrieved using the Scopus (R) scientific database.

AB - The nickel coatings were produced by electroless plating process, without and with addition of 5-7 vol.% SiC nanoparticles of five different sizes (10, 45, 100, 150 and 700 nm in diameter). Coatings were tested in as-deposited and in heat treated (heating at 300 degrees C for 6 h) condition, with two different surface textures preparation. This type of coatings was previously tested and showed improved abrasive wear resistance. Coefficients of friction testing of electroless nickel coatings in contact with bronze counter-body were determined in ambient air and unlubricated conditions. Static and kinetic coefficient of friction, as well as the difference between them, were analysed and discussed. The influence of size of embedded SiC particles in composite coatings, on tested friction properties of these coatings was also determined.

AB - Metal matrix nanocomposites (MMnCs) comprise a metal matrix filled with nanosized reinforcements with physical and mechanical properties that are very different from those of the matrix. In ZA-27 alloy-based nanocomposites, the metal matrix provides ductility and toughness, while usually used ceramic reinforcements give high strength and hardness. Tested ZA-27 alloy-based nanocomposites, reinforced with different types (SiC and Al2O3), amounts (0.2 wt.%, 0.3 wt.%, and 0.5 wt.%) and sizes (25 nm, 50 nm, and 100 nm) of nanoparticles were produced through the compocasting process with mechanical alloying pre-processing (ball milling). It was previously shown that the presence of nanoparticles in ZA-27 alloy-based nanocomposites led to the formation of a finer structure in the nanocomposites matrix and an improvement in the basic mechanical properties (hardness and compressive yield strength) through the enhanced dislocation density strengthening mechanism. Solid particle erosive wear testing demonstrated that these improvements were followed with an increase in the erosive wear resistance of tested nanocomposites, as well. Additionally, by analyzing the influences of type, amount, and size of nanoparticles on the erosive wear resistance of nanocomposites, it was demonstrated that there is an optimal amount of nanoparticles, which in our case is 0.3 wt.%, and that the presence of SiC nanoparticles and smaller nanoparticles in nanocomposites had more beneficial influence on erosive wear resistance.

AB - The objects of this work were nine different copper-based friction linings produced from powder by pressing and sintering. Six copper-based friction linings contained 3 wt.% zinc (Zn) and variable content of tin (Sn), i.e. 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 wt. %. Three copper-based friction linings were with fixed contents of Zn (3 wt.%) and Sn (10 wt.%), and with different amount of SiC particles, i.e. 2, 4 and 6 wt.%. Tribological studies on these friction linings included determination of the static and kinetic coefficient of friction under different normal loads and unlubricated sliding conditions, as well as, determination of the abrasive wear resistance under different normal loads and unlubricated sliding/rolling conditions. The analysed results present the influence of Sn content and addition of SiC particles to the copper-based friction lining on its friction and wear properties.

AB - The paper considers a change in the coefficient of friction and the temperature distribution in the contact zone of the steel-bronze tribosystem. Investigations were carried out by the shaft-bushing system for three values of the load in the mixed-to-boundary lubrication regime with SAE 80W transmission oil without and with Valena additive. It is found that the additive presence in oil decreases the coefficient of friction by 11-21%, depending on the applied load. At the same time, the maximum decrease in the coefficient of friction is observed at a maximum applied load of 1500 N.

AB - This paper presents a short summary of the researches conducted in past few years concerning the metal matrix composites with different matrix material, different reinforcing/alloying elements, and obtained by different processing techniques. The results are classified into three groups according to the matrix material. In the first group are the results for microcomposites with AlSi7Mg matrix alloy obtained by compocasting method. These results cover the influences of amount and size of reinforcement (Al2O3), and the influence of type of reinforcement (Al2O3, SiC and SiC with graphite addition). In the second group are the results for nanocomposites with ZnAl25Si matrix alloy obtained by casting and compocasting method. These results cover the influences of silicon and strontium addition percentage, and the influences of strontium and/or Al2O3 nanoparticles addition. In the third group are the results for micro- and nanocomposites with Cu matrix obtained by powder metallurgy technology (preceded by mechanical alloying and/or internal oxidation). These results cover the influence of size of reinforcement (Al2O3) on the macroscale (composite properties), and the same influence on the nanoscale (only the matrix properties).

AB - The aim of this study was to examine the static and kinetic friction of electroless Ni coatings of different surface roughening, in unlubricated contact with various counter-body materials. In particular, difference between static and kinetic coefficients of friction was analysed. The Ni coatings deposition was done with electroless plating process. Samples of electroless Ni coatings without and with SiC nanoparticles were heat treated at 300 °С for 6 hours. The microstructure of all samples was characterized by optical microscopy. Microhardness of samples and counter-bodies were also examined. The static and kinetic coefficients of friction was measured for each coating with initial and working surface roughness. Three typical materials used in industry were chosen as a counter-body material. The possibility of stick-slip occurrence was analysed through the static and kinetic coefficients of friction difference. Obtained results show that coatings hardness has strong influence on coefficient of friction, and that slip-stick phenomenon is unlikely to occur, since the differences between static and kinetic coefficients of friction are small. The SiC nanoparticles were added to Ni coating in order to improve the abrasive wear resistance. In the same time, presence of SiC nanoparticles slightly increases the coefficient of friction in unlubricated conditions. Obtained results showed that surface roughness does not have major influence on the coefficient of friction of tested coatings, and that coatings hardness is more influential. The SiC nanoparticles were added to standard electroless Ni coating, and their properties are investigated. Heat treatment was applied to achieve crystalline structure and to improve mechanical and tribological properties. Coefficient of friction testing was performed by simply and easy to operate test rig.

AB - Wear of moulded spheroidal graphite cast iron alloyed by Sn is studied under conditions of boundary lubrication. The lubricant contains a metal-plating additive “Valena”. Five types of moulded spheroidal graphite cast iron specimens are studied with various wt. % Sn: without Sn (0 wt. % Sn), as well as with 0.018, 0.020, 0.032 and 0.051 wt. % Sn. Three types of lubricants are applied: lithium grease NLGI 3, motor oil SAE 15W-40 and transmission oil SAE 80W-90, in cases without and with 0.5 wt. % content of “Valena” metal-plating additive. The study is carried-out under conditions of constant load, sliding distance and velocity, using the pin-on-disk tribometer. Results of the influence of Sn content on the specimens wear are obtained for the various lubricant media.

AB - The repair-regeneration oil additives are new generation additives with important place in the application of lubricants. Added to oils or greases they assure partial regeneration of worn surfaces and, at the same time, decrease the moment of friction and the coefficient of friction in the contact pairs of machines. Most common are the organic oil-soluble additives. The paper exposes results of the study of the oil-soluble metal-plating composite additive "Valena". The influence of this additive on the friction parameters of ball bearing lubricated by motor oil М-63/14 (SAE 15W-40, API SF/CC) and transmission oil ТМ-5-18 (SAE 80W-90, API GL-5) has been investigated.

AB - The zinc-aluminium based casting alloy ZA-27 is well-established alloy and is frequently used materials for sleeves of plain bearings. It has good physical, mechanical and tribological properties. However, one of the major disadvantages is its dimensional instability over a period of time (ageing). To overcome this, the copper in the alloy may be replaced by silicon. Coarsening of the silicon particles is controlled by suitable additions of strontium. The influence of the strontium addition on friction and wear properties in boundary lubricated conditions was done on block-on-disc tribometer. The tests were carried-out for three Zn25Al3Si alloys with variable strontium content (0 wt. %, 0.03 wt. % and 0.05 wt. %), and, for the purpose of comparison, for standard ZA-27 alloy. Tests have confirmed that the wear rate of zinc-aluminium alloys with silicon is lower than the standard ZA-27, and have shown that the strontium addition lowers that rate additionally, with the slight increase of the coefficient of friction.
