Controlling highway toll stations using deep learning, queuing theory, and differential evolution

AB  - Traffic congestion is, nowadays, one of the most important highway problems. Highway tolls with booth operators are one of the causes of traffic congestion on highways, especially in rush hour periods, or during seasonal holiday travels. The value of driver waiting time (needed to stop and pay the toll) and the cost of the toll booth operators can reach up to about one-third of the revenue. In this paper we propose a novel methodology for continuous-time optimal control of highway tolls by predicting the optimal number of active modules (booths) in toll stations. The proposed methodology is based on a combination of recurrent neural networks, queuing theory, and metaheuristics. We utilized several recurrent neural network architectures for predicting the average intensity of vehicle arrivals. Moreover, the prediction error of the first recurrent neural network was modelled by another one in order to provide confidence estimates, additional regularization, and robustness. The predicted intensity of vehicle arrival rates was used as an input of the queuing model, whereas differential evolution was applied to minimize the total cost (waiting and service costs) by determining the optimal number of active modules on a highway toll in continuous time. The developed methodology was experimentally tested on real data from highway E70 in the Republic of Serbia. The obtained results showed significantly better performance compared to the currently used toll station opening pattern. The solutions obtained by solving a system of differential equations of the queuing model were also validated by a simulation procedure.

RELIABILITY-BASED RISK ASSESSMENT OF AUXILIARY MACHINERY IN OPEN-PIT MINES: CASE STUDY OF A HYDRAULIC EXCAVATOR

AB  - Risk based approach has been proven in generating utility in the mining industry by multiple authors. However, most of the previous research has focused on heavy machinery, neglecting the impact that auxiliary machines have in overall risk management. The following study aims to propose a risk assessment methodology for auxiliary machinery in open-pit mines based on the analysis of a hydraulic excavator maintenance data. The overall risk was defined in accordance with the FMEA method, as a product of three partial indicators: severity, occurrence and detection of failures. Failure type distribution and distinction were illustrated via Pareto chart with the goal to rate the detection indicator. The chi-square tests of downtime and time between failure data were following and enabled analytical determination of the system’s reliability and mean downtime, which led to evaluating the severity and occurrence of failures. Accordingly, framework for evaluation was proposed with a three dimensional risk assessment matrix as a result and proved on collected data.

Discrete-time system conditional optimization based on Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model using the full transfer function

AB  - The study proposes a novel method for synthesis of a discrete-time parallel distributed
compensation (PDC) controller for the nonlinear discrete-time Takagi–Sugeno (TS) fuzzy plant model. For each of the fuzzy plant model linear subsystems, a local linear first order proportional-sum (PS) controller is designed. The algebraic technique is used in two-dimensional parameter space, utilizing the characteristic polynomial of the row nondegenerate full transfer function matrix. Each system’s relative stability is accomplished in relation to the selected damping coefficient. The supplementary criterion is the minimal value of the performance index in the form of the sum of squared errors (SSE). However, unlike the traditional technique, output error is influenced by all simultaneous actions on the system: nonzero inputs and nonzero initial conditions. The full transfer function matrix of the system allows for the treatment of simultaneous actions of the input vector and unknown unpredictable initial conditions. In order to show the improvement caused by the application of a new optimization method that considers nonzero initial conditions, a comparison of PDC controllers designed under zero and nonzero initial conditions is given, where the system in both cases starts from the same nonzero initial conditions, which is often the case in practice. The simulation and experimental results on a DC servo motor are shown to demonstrate the suggested method efficiency.

Risk Evaluation: Brief Review and Innovation Model Based on Fuzzy Logic and MCDM

AB  - The risk assessment of engineering systems represents an important part of the quality of service and dependability. The existing methods for risk evaluation use crisp sets for rating partial indicators' proposition and their cumulative products as an overall indicator. In this paper, existing FMEA and FMECA methods have been improved using the fuzzy expert system for calculating the risk priority number. The application of fuzzy logic allows the use of linguistic descriptions for risk analysis. In this way, the state of the system in terms of risks and consequences is better described. The settings of the fuzzy systems are based on the application of two multi-criteria decision-making methods. The AHP method was used to define the mutual relationship of the impact of partial indicators (occurrence, severity, and detectability) on risk. In this way, subjectivity in risk assessment is reduced. In the composition of the fuzzy model, the TOPSIS method is introduced to reduce the dissipation of results, which contributes to the accuracy of the outcome. This contributes to the accuracy of the results. The results were verified through a case study of a complex engineering system-bucket-wheel excavators. The risk was observed from the aspect of the danger of damage and the danger of downtime. The initial information for weak points of ES is defined according to historical damage events and statistics of downtime. Expert knowledge was used for weak points grading in the model. Additional model verification was performed using similar methods, using the same input data. The innovative model, presented in the paper, shows that it is possible to correct different weights of risk indicators. The obtained results show less dispersion compared with other existing methods. Weak points with increased risk have been located, and an algorithm has been proposed for risk-based maintenance application and implementation.

AB  - Although Professor Vukan Dešić’s brilliance is evidently important on a global scale, unfortunately, not much has been written about his biography and contribution to the scientific field so far, and thus not much is known, as stated by Janko Cvijanović in the text “A Tribute to Professor Vukan Dešić 1906-1975” published in 2011[8]. This overview paper first aims to outline and consolidate all the biographical facts available today in libraries and archives, and then list the teaching, scientific and professional contributions made by Professor Vukan Dešić during his fruitful life. Nowadays, it is extremely important to emphasize the relevance of the pioneering contributions of Professor Dešić, because there can be no bright future without respect for the past. Bearing in mind that Professor Dešić opened up the path into a deeper understanding of the scientific organization of work, at least in the European area, as a sign of gratitude to our founder, we write this paper and dedicate the 8th International Conference of Industrial Engineering – SIE 2022 to him, pointing out especially to the following contributions of our “teacher”: 1) his contribution to the development of higher education through performing the functions of the Vice-rector, Dean and Rector at the University of Belgrade and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering; 2) his contribution to the development of railways as the general manager of the Yugoslav State Railways and assistant to the Minister of Railways, i.e. Transport; 3) the fact that, as early as in 1949, he developed the course in Scientific Organization of Work and founded the Department for Scientific Organization of Work at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Belgrade exactly 70 years ago; 4) the fact that he is responsible for the establishment of the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering, an initiator of the founding of the Faculty of Organizational Sciences and the Technical College of Mechanical Engineering; 5) his contribution to the development of scientific fields as a head and/or founder of a large number of institutes and scientific associations (e.g. Centre for Multidisciplinary Studies, Yugoslav Society of Mechanics); 6) his numerous scientific and professional contributions of tremendous importance, with special emphasis on the fact that he is the founder of the contingent theory of organization, the creator of an innovative Complex Analytical Method, which seriously raised the level of organization of the Yugoslav companies at the time, the forerunner of the invention of Ishikawa, and a serious critic of Taylor’s contributions, who refuted the premises laid by Henry Town as the foundations of management and organization.

AB  - Рад на пројекту Deep Machine Learning and Swarm Intelligence based Optimization Algorithms for Control and Scheduling of Cyber‐Physical Systems in Industry 4.0 – MISSION4.0 је у оквиру једног од радних пакета подразумевао истраживање у области нелинеарних проблема оптимизације и управљања кретања захватног механизама у присуству ограничења. У циљу постизања задате путање врха захватног механизма, пројектовани су управљачки системи засновани на фази логици у управљању, чији параметри су оптимизовани применом различитих метахеуристичких метода оптимизације. Примена предложених техника управљања приказана је на примеру захватног механизма аутономног мобилног робота. Други део истраживања односио се на управљање брзине и позиције мотора једносмерене струје, као главног покретача захватног механизма, где су примењене различите технике управљања: фази управљање, техника feedback линеаризације, као и њихове оптимизоване верзије различитим метахеуристичким алгоритмима. У овом раду даје се преглед једног дела резултата пројекта MISSION4.0, објављених у различитим међународним и националним часописима и конференцијама, као и преглед резултата приказаних у техничком решењу.
AB  - One of the work packages in the project Deep Machine Learning and Swarm Intelligence based Optimization Algorithms for Control and Scheduling of Cyber-Physical Systems in Industry 4.0 - MISSION4.0 included research in the field of nonlinear optimization problems and control of the motion of the gripping mechanism in the presence of constraints. In order to achieve the proposed path of the gripping mechanism, control systems based on fuzzy logic, were designed and their parameters were optimized using various metaheuristic optimization methods. The application of the proposed control techniques is shown on the example of the gripping mechanism of an autonomous mobile robot. The second part of the research was related to the control of the speed and position of the direct current motor, as the main actuator of the gripping mechanism, where different control techniques were applied: fuzzy control, feedback linearization technique, as well as their optimized versions with different metaheuristic algorithms. This paper provides an overview of a part of the results of the MISSION4.0 project, published in various international and national journals and conferences, as well as an overview of the results presented in the technical report.

Fuzzy Controller Optimized by the African Vultures Algorithm for Trajectory Tracking of a Two–Link Gripping Mechanism

AB  - This paper presents the proportional–derivative fuzzy controller for
trajectory tracking of the gripping mechanism with two degrees of
freedom. Aiming to achieve movement of the gripping mechanism without
sudden starting and stopping, a polynomial velocity profile is utilized. The
African vultures optimization, as one of the latest metaheuristic
algorithms, is used to obtain the optimal input/output scaling gains of the
proposed fuzzy controller according to the selected fitness function. The
results obtained by this algorithm are compared with the other three new
and popular metaheuristic algorithms: the whale optimization, the ant lion
optimization and the sine cosine algorithm. Moreover, a simulation study
was done for the defined initial position and for the scenario where there is
a certain deviation because the gripping mechanism is not at its original
initial position. Finally, the robustness of the controller is tested for the
case when the masses of the segments increase three times. The results
revealed that the suggested controller was capable of dealing with
nonlinearities of the gripping mechanism, initial position and parameter
changes. The movement of the gripping mechanism is smooth and follows
the defined trajectory.

AB  - Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a common ingredient in everyday products and activities and a part of all levels of education. Artificial intelligence is present as a separate subject in schools or as part of the different curriculum in the form of learning outcomes and content. This paper summarizes the design of the artificial intelligence curriculum structure for vocational schools in Serbia and possible challenges in the implementation process. Also, the paper proposes ways of popularizing and providing help to teachers as a response to possible challenges in the teaching of artificial intelligence topics. The paper is created to support the achievement of the goals of the Strategy for the Development of Artificial Intelligence in the Republic of Serbia for period 2020–2025.

AB  - After years of instability in Libya, the Libyan public sector has a real need for the administrative skills and modern methods that the private sector can provide, in addition to the financial resources owned by some banks, which makes investing in Libya an attractive target for any potential investor. The recent drastic changes in the Libyan government's policy toward openness to foreign investment and a greater role for the private sector suggest that PPP-type schemes can be a powerful alternative to the traditional way in which the country purchases its projects. This led to the government's adoption of a PPP system, and the establishment of an entity to manage this approach called Libyan Public Private Partnership Company (LPPPC). On the other hand, the process of public-private partnership in infrastructure projects faces a wide range of risks, challenges, and obstacles that affect the success of the public-private partnership, which must be studied to avoid or mitigate them. It is important to have an appropriate methodological framework for evaluating proposed infrastructure projects before they are offered to PPP and to be able to identify the main factors affecting the project in order to assess the implementation capability and risks associated with the project. The proposed and used framework is the SWOT analysis to identify and analyze the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) surrounding the project.

AB  - This paper presents the model for the identification of reference points on the lifetime
curve of engineering systems. This curve commonly represents the increase and decline of failure
in relation to time. A direct correlation between failure rate and costs is assumed in this paper,
therefore, statistical and empirical analysis of costs provided reference points. This approach is
used for positioning stages of the engineering system’s lifetime with a minimal number of failures
and costs, regardless of whether these are acceptable or not. The following three stages are usually
identified: the beginning, the stationary part and the end of life. The boundaries between them are
recognized on the basis of minimum total lifetime costs and on economic lifetime costs. Model is
tested on the dozers, machines frequently used in the mining industry for the earthmoving operations,
and which are characterized by high operating and maintenance costs.

AB  - Техничко решење се односи на решавање проблема оптималног управљања у смислу одређивања оптималне трајекторије, односно профила брзине кретања механизама транспортних машина, као и синтезу управљања за праћење задате оптималне трајекторије. Проблем оптималног кретања механизма захватног уређаја (његовог врха) спада у категорију нелинеарних проблема оптимизације у присуству ограничења. У циљу његовог решававања, неопходно је било урадити следеће: 1) математички моделовати динамичко понашање механизма захватног уређаја мобилног робота; 2) одредити оптималну трајекторију, односно профил брзине кретања механизма захватног уређаја; 3) пројектовати управљачки систем који омогућава праћење задате, оптималне трајекторије; 4) оптимизовати параметре управљачког система у циљу остваривања што је могуће мање грешке праћења. Применом методе принципа максимума одређен је оптимални профил брзине, односно оптимална трајекторија кретања, у смислу минимизације времена кретања механизама транспортних машина (захватних уређаја, целих машина или њених делова). Потом је имплементирано интелигентно, фази управљање кретања механизма у циљу остваривања дефинисане оптималне трајекторије, при чему је за оптимизацију параметара фази алгоритма управљања коришћена метахеуристичка метода оптимизације заснована на интелигенцији јата китова, као једна од најсавременијих. Експериментална верификација предложене методологије у овом техничком решењу приказана је на примеру аутономног мобилног робота, а добијени резултати су показали да је рад оптимизованог фази управљачког система веома задовољавајући, тако да се ова метода може успешно користити за задатке управљања у различитим техничким областима.

AB  - This paper presents a feedback linearization controller for trajectory tracking of two degrees of freedom (2DOF) gripping mechanism.  To reach this goal, after deriving the dynamical equations of the gripping mechanism, the feedback linearization approach is utilized to change the nonlinear dynamics to a linear one. Classical proportional-derivative controller with feedback linearization is applied for positioning and tracking control. Furthermore, in order to achieve movement of the mechanism without the sudden stopping at the desired point, a trapezoidal velocity profile is used to obtain desired trajectory. Numerical simulations using Matlab/Simulink successfully demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

AB  - The manufacturing industry frequently deals with the problem of gripping mechanism and their movement optimization. This paper presents an optimization methodology based on the whale optimization algorithm to design an optimal fuzzy PD controller of a two - link gripping mechanism (robot arm) as a part of mobile robot working cycle. The dynamical analysis of gripping mechanism investigates a coupling relation between the joint torques applied by the actuators and the position and acceleration of the robot arm. The proposed fuzzy controller optimizes the trajectory of the 
robot’s end effector. Additionally, a simulation study was done for the specific initial case and the trapezoidal velocity profile was generated. Based on the predefined acceleration, movement of the robot arm is shown to be smooth and without an abrupt braking.

AB  - With expanding environmental and climate change regulatory frameworks,
the fossil-based baseload generation is forced to decline, thus making room
for more and more generation based on renewable and other carbon-free
energy sources. This paper deals with a number of controversial issues and
open questions concerning the growing penetration of renewable energy
sources into power generation systems, often without due care of the impacts
of variable as compared to conventional generation on the reliability of electricity
supply. Particular attention is paid to baseload generation, power market
design, system operation under extreme weather conditions, energy storage,
back-up, and reserve power, as well as to the role of mechanical inertia
and reliability of on-site fuel supply, demonstrated on an example of coal
excavation and delivery to a power plant.

AB  - The main idea of this chapter is to promote maintenance centered to safety, in accordance to adaptive
fuzzy inference model, which has online adjustment to working conditions. Input data for this model are
quality of service indicators of analyzed engineering system: reliability, maintainability, failure consequence,
and severity and detectability. Indicators in final form are obtained with permanent monitoring
of the engineering system and statistical processing. Level of safety is established by composition and
ranking of indicators according to fuzzy inference engine. The problem of monitoring and processing
of indicators comprising safety is solved by using the features that Industry4.0 provides. Maintenance
centered to safety is important for complex, multi-hierarchy engineering systems. Sudden failures on
such systems could have significant financial and environmental effect. Developed model will be tested
in the final part of the chapter, in the case study of bucket wheel excavator.

AB  - In this paper, we presented a novel methodology for learning temporal point process based on the
implementation of one-dimensional numerical integration techniques. The implementation of numerical
methodology is used for linearizing negative maximum likelihood (neML) function to enable backpropagation
of neML derivative. The presented approach is tested on highway toll dataset. Moreover, four different wellknown
point process baseline models were compared: first-order and second-order polynomial Poisson
inhomogeneous process and Hawkes with exponential and Gaussian kernel. The results showed that different
numerical integration techniques influence the quality of the obtained models.

Availability presents a variable value and changes in time and space. Usually, availability is shown as the coefficient of time use of the machine. This approach is not good enough because it does not go into the structure of the availability itself and requires a high level of IT support in system monitoring. In this sense, this paper will use the fuzzy theory and the corresponding analytic hierarchy process (AHP) multi-criteria analysis to present a conceptual and mathematical model for the assessment of availability based on expert judgment. The model will be shown in the case study (on the example) of bulldozers working in the open-pit lignite mine.

AB  - Effectiveness evaluation is one of the basic components of engineering asset management and maintenance engineering in general. Effectiveness is an overall concept representing a measurement of quality of service level for the analyzed engineering system. This concept contains a series of partial indicators relating to time in operation and time for maintenance activities, as well as functional properties of the system. This article describes the analysis and structuring of partial indicators, as well as the development of a model for their synthesis to the level of effectiveness. Mentioned data are of hybrid character, measured data and experts' judgments; hence a fuzzy inference model is suggested for their processing and integration into effectiveness. This approach provided the possibility for evaluation of an engineering system in the sense of decision making about remaining capabilities and optimization of life-cycle costs. To demonstrate the potential of the developed model for evaluating effectiveness, this article provides a case study relating to bulldozers. Bulldozers are one of the most common machines operating on surface mines in difficult conditions, under pressure to achieve maximum performance with low stoppages and reduced costs during overall operational life. The case study included two approaches. The first one was based on data collected by experts' judgments, while the other one was based on the measurement and statistical processing of data. The evaluation of these machines is done by fuzzy-based decision support model for effectiveness evaluation. The example shows the behavior of the bulldozer during the operation and during the maintenance. The strength and applicability of the model were demonstrated by a comparative analysis of the obtained results.

Effectiveness is an overall concept representing a measurement of quality of service level for the analyzed engineering system. This concept contains a series of partial indicators relating to time in operation and time for maintenance activities, as well as functional properties of the system. Bulldozers are one of the most common machines operating on surface mines in difficult conditions, under pressure to achieve maximum performance with low stoppages and reduced costs during overall operational life. AB  - Transporteri sa gumenom trakom na površinskim kopovima rade u izuzetno teškim radnim
uslovima. Razlog tome je izražen uticaj radnog okruženja na normalan i nesmetan rad. Kiša, blato,
veliki raspon radnih temperatura samo dodatno otežava dostizanje planiranih kapaciteta. Povećana
prašina i vlaga stvaraju velike probleme obrtnim delovima transportera; valjcima i bubnjevima.
Usled dužeg perioda rada u takvim uslovima, dolazi do problema sa zaptivanjem, pa ulazak prašine
i vode često znatno smanjuje radni vek ležaja, što neminovno utiče na pouzdanost sistema. Cilj
analize vršene kroz ovaj rad je da ukaže koji tip ležajeva se najbolje pokazao na valjcima u
nosećem i povratnom kraku za odgovarajuće pozicije rolne u slogu i opterećenja u radu.
AB  - Belt conveyors on open cast mines work in extremely difficult working conditions. The reason for
this is the significant impact of atmospheric conditions on normal and smooth operation. Rain,
mud, a large range of operating temperatures only makes it more difficult to reaching the planned
capacity. Increased dust and moisture often create major problems with the rotary parts of the
conveyor; rollers and drums. Due to prolonged periods of operation under such conditions, there
is a sealing problem, and the ingress of dust and wate often greatly reduces the lifespan of the
bearing, which inevitably affects the reliability of the system. The aim of the analysis carried out
by this paper is to indicate which series of bearings have best shown on the rollers in the carrier
and the return arm for the respective roll position and work load.

AB  - U radu su predstavljene dve metode za rešavanje Košijevog problema običnih diferencijalnih
jednačina prvog reda. Metode su bazirane na rešavanju običnih diferencijalnih jednačina prvog reda
korišćenjem genetskih algoritama (GA). Metode su međusobno upoređene sa različitim načinama sparivanja
populacije. Pored toga data su poređenja GA sa najprostijim i najčešće primenjivanim metodama za
rešavanje običnih diferencijalnih jednačina. Pokazuje se da GA daju zadovoljavajuće vrednosti rešenja
diferencijalnih jednačina i da su efikasniji od određenih numeričkih metoda. Runge Kuta metod pokazuje
najbolje vrednosti aproksimacije rešenja, dok Ojlerov metod sa korakom 0,1 pokazuje veće vrednosti
relativnih grešaka aproksimativnih rešenja u odnosu na GA. Bez obzira na to primena GA je vrlo ograničena
s obzirom na vreme izvršenja istih koje je nekoliko 1000 puta veće u odnosu na preostale metode.
AB  - In this paper two different methods for solving Cauchy problem of first order differential equations
are preseneted. Methods are based on implementation of genetic algorithms. Results of both methods are
compared with the commonly used techniques for solving differential equations. It is shown that methods
based on genetic algorithms achieved satisfactory results and better performances compared to Eulers
method. 5th order Runge Kutta method obtained best approximation of real results, whereas Euler method
with step 0,1 achieved the worst performances. Neverthless it is shown that application of genetic algorithms
in solving first order differential equations is limited due to high computational costs.

AB  - U radu je predstavljen metod za predviđanje intenziteta saobraćaja na sistemu za naplatu putarine
za različit broj unapred određnih naplatnih rampi koje će biti otvorene. Sistem za naplatu putarine je
predstavljen kao više jednokanalnih sistema ospluživanja, gde jedan kanal predstavlja jednu naplatnu
rampu. Razvijanjem metodologije zasnovane na predviđanju parametra opsluživanja za unapred zadati broj
otvorenih kanala, kombinacijom neuronskih mreža i modela masovnog opsluživanja evaluirane su
verovatnoće stanja sistema za naplatu putarine i ukupni troškovi istog . LSTM neuronska mreža (eng. Long
short term memory) sa unutrašnjom standardizacijom korišćena je za predviđanje parametra opsluživanja.
Analizirane su 24 arhitekture mreža, model sa najboljim prediktivnim performansama je izabran i korišćen u
cilji predviđanja parametra opsluživanja.
AB  - In this paper method for predicting states of toll station system for different number of open toll
ramps is developed. The system for toll payment is modeled as single channel queuing model, where one
channel presents toll ramp. The novel methodology based on combination of reccurent neural networks and
queuing theory is presented. The goal of the methodlogy is to evaluate total costs and probability of traffic
intensity at the pay toll stations.. Long short term memory neural network (LSTM) with layer normalization
is used as a model for prediction intensity. The 24 different architectures of network are analyzed, and the
best one is used as the predictor for intensity of vehicles arrivng time.
