Crack Resistance of AA6156 Welded Stringer Panels

AB  - Experimental and numerical analysis of crack growth in integral skin-stringer panels, produced by Laser Beam Welding (LBW), was performed in the scope of WELDAIR project and later on. Experiment was performed on full-scale components (four stringers, three welded clips), made of AA 6156 T6. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) was used to measure strains and construct CTOD or J crack resistance curves. It was shown that J vs. Δa can have unusual shape, indicating real component crack resistance instead of critical J value commonly obtained by comparing J-R curves with calculated Crack Driving Forces (CDFs). The applied technique is simple, practical and has no limitation in respect to material and geometry

AB  - The fracture of engineering materials is always an undesirable phenomenon, which primarily can endanger human lives, create economic losses, and lead to downtime and unavailability of mechanical parts. The main drawback that still prevents the broader use of ceramic and glass-ceramic materials is the tendency to brittle fracture due to extremely low toughness. Due to the appearance of cracks, the mechanical properties and structure of the material degrade irreversibly, which can lead to catastrophic failure of the mechanical element or construction. This drawback can be overcome by synthesizing novel composite materials with glass-ceramic matrix and metal reinforcement with improved fracture toughness.
This research examined two materials: a glass-ceramic material and a composite material based on glass-ceramic-metal. The glass-ceramic material is obtained from andesite basalt powder, while the glass ceramic-metal composite is made from the glass-ceramic matrix of andesite basalt powder and a metal reinforcement of stainless steel powder in the content of 20 wt%. The aggregate of andesite basalt from Serbia was used as the starting natural raw material for obtaining the glass-ceramic matrix. The austenitic stainless steel powder of the commercial grade Surfit TM 316L was used as a reinforcement. Both materials were obtained using powder metallurgy, which consisted of the following phases: crushing of andesite basalt aggregate, sieving of the stainless steel powder, homogenization of powder and binder, cold uniaxial pressing of the powder, cold isostatic pressing of green compact and sintering as the final phase to obtain a high-density solid sample.
The andesite basalt, and 316L stainless steel powder were characterized using a scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction method. The sintered samples of glass-ceramic and glass-ceramic-metal were characterized with an optical light microscope, scanning electron microscope, and Vickers hardness test.
Based on the obtained results, it can bu concluded that the presence of metallic particles in the glass-ceramic matrix leads to a slight decrease in hardness while contributing to an increase in the materials fracture toughness by about 33% [1]. During crack propagation in the glass-ceramic matrix, different crack particle interactions were observed: crack stops, deflects, or bridgings when encountering the spherical metal particle. These interaction phenomena and mechanisms of crack propagation in the glass-ceramic-metal composite lead to an increase of crack propagation resistance.

AB  - The research covers the investigation of mechanical properties of welded joint made on NiCr21Mo alloy (commercial trademark Incoloy 825), and joints of steels P355GH and X2CrNiMo17-12-2, as well as the influence of the achieved mechanical properties on structural integrity. Ongoing research is oriented on welded joints made of NiCr21Mo, i.e., the alloy to be introduced for certain parts (made of the aforementioned materials P355GH and X2CrNiMo17-12-2) of processing equipment exposed to elevated temperatures and high corrosive environment. Three preliminary welding technologies are presented in the first part of the paper. Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding technique is used due to the type of filler material. The filler material features mechanical properties that provide an overmatching effect. After non-destructive tests (NDT), mechanical properties of all three welded joints are examined according to criteria that guarantee safe work and welded component integrity. In addition to mechanical tests (uniaxial tension, bending, impact toughness, hardness measurements), a microstructural analysis is performed to verify the applied preliminary welding technologies and evaluate the integrity of the obtained joints. After analysing all tests it is confirmed that the application of the preliminary welding technology has met all the requirements according to the applied criteria.

AB  - The paper describes the surfacing technology for coating of high-alloyed austenitic stainless steel 316L on the steel S235JR base material. Coatings were applied by plasma transferred arc welding process. The 5 samples were made using different welding currents while other welding param¬eters were constant. Metallographic analysis of the obtained samples is used to establish a correlation between the micro¬structural constituents and the applied welding current in the surfacing process. According to this it was possible to determine the optimal parameters of coating surfacing. The filler material was in the form of powder, while its charac¬terization was performed by scanning electron microscopy, and the characterization of the obtained coatings by optical microscopy.

AB  - Compound Ti2AlC is a MAX phase discovered in the early 1960s.  It is well known that Ti2AlC has excellent physical and mechanical properties and chemical stability [1]. On the surface of Ti2AlC, at high temperatures, a stable, protective oxide layer, Al2O3, is usually formed [2], whose coefficient of thermal expansion is approximately equal to the coefficient of thermal expansion of Ti2AlC [3]. If this Al2O3 layer is compact, it stops further oxygen penetration and protects Ti2AlC from further oxidation. Due to its excellent oxidation resistance, MAX phase Ti2AlC has great potential in producing protective coatings for components in the industry that are exposed to high temperatures [4,5]. Coating Ti2AlC can be applied to the substrate by different thermal spraying processes. Cold spraying (CS), high velocity air fuel (HVAF), and high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) processes can be singled out as particularly interesting due to the possibility of applying thicker coatings to the substrate [6].
This paper describes the technology of applying the Ti2AlC phase on heat-resistant steel using the HVOF system of the third generation, which uses a mixture of oxygen and kerosene as fuel. Also, the filler material, which was in the form of powder, and the microstructure of the obtained coating were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Ti2AlC coating was successfully applied and a relatively good mechanical bond was achieved with the substrate. The goal of surfacing the Ti2AlC coating was a potential application for protecting steel from oxidation at elevated temperatures.

AB  - During preparing activities, as well as welding proces itself, it is necessary to strictly adhere to all relavant standards, programs and prescribed procedures. Experience can have a significant role for realization of repair welding, but it can also have the opposite effect. This fact (or ignorance) has led to the need for subsequent repair of cracks on the treiber roll. The previous claim is based on the fact that the treiber roll is made of S235J0 steel, whose characteristics (such as weldability) are not unknown, and inadequately measures that where taken led to the cold cracks occurance, which directly and indirectly caused huge losses. The reasons for cold cracks occurance were also explained in the paper itself. Steps for cold cracks repairing on the upper treiber roll of steel-mill sheet metal plant are also presented. Steps for repair welding with all parameters are described in order to eliminate defects caused by previous welding technology.

AB  - The review of non-destructive testing of pressure vessel for compressed air is given, as well as the assessment and analysis of defects on the integrity of the vessel itself. The focus here is on welded joints, as the most critical areas in pressure vessels, especially if thickness is large, like in the case considered here (50 mm), cylindrical air storage vessels made of HSLA steel. Toward this end conventional NDT methods, such as UT and Radiography are used in the first phase of this research, providing valuable data for structural integrity assessment based on detected unacceptable defects in welded joints. Anyhow, since few unacceptable defects were found by conventional UT, there was a need to use advanced NDT UT methods, such as Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT), to evaluate defect position and size more precisely. In this way risk of failure can be assessed more reliable, which is of utmost importance for pressure vessel where probability of failure is low, but the consequence of failure is potentially catastrophic, like in the case considered here.

AB  - Određivanje stvarnog dijagrama napon-deformacija predstavlja višedecenijski problem jer metode određivanja deformacija, po sve tri ose, u realnom vremenu tek od nedavno predstavljaju realnost naučnog ispitivanja. Napretkom optičkih metoda za određivanje deformacija, prilikom ispitivanja zatezanjem došlo se do mogućnosti merenja deformacija uzorka u realnom vremenu. Ovu mogućnost je obezbedila primena stereometrijskog načina merenja deformacija. Dakle primenom dve kamere i softverskih paketa za obradu dobijenih rezultata, konačno postoji prilika da se odredi stvarni dijagram zatezanja tj. stvarni dijagram napon-deformacija. U okviru ove disertacije prikazana je metodologija određivanja stvarnog dijagrama napon-deformacija za ’’undermatching’’ zavareni spoj, na martenzitnom čeliku. Korišćena je korelacija digitalnih slika (DIC) i metoda konačnih elemenata (FEM) uz upotrebu softverskih paketa Aramis i Abaqus. Dijagram zatezanja koji se najčešće koristi naziva se ''inženjerski dijagram'', jer naponi i deformacije koji su predstavljeni na njemu nisu stvarni tj. dobijeni su upotrebom formula koje važe samo do trenutka kada na epruveti počne stvaranje ''vrata''. Pored ovog dijagrama često se koristi i ''stvarni'' dijagram zatezanja, koji se dobija upotrebom korigovanih formula kojima je izračunat inženjerski dijagram. Ni ovaj pristup ne daje tačne vrednosti napona niti deformacija jer ne uzima u obzir suženje epruvete i lokalne promene dimenzija kao ni koncentraciju napona koja se javlja na mestu suženja. U okviru ove disertacije, razmotren je pristup da troosno stanje napona, koje se javlja nakon stvaranja ''vrata'', dovodi do porasta napona kom je epruveta izložena i predstavljen je način dobijanja potrebnih parametara za određivanje stvarnog dijagrama koji uzima u obzir i koncentraciju napona na mestu suženja koja je, kako će se ispostaviti, dominantan parametar za porast napona pored smanjenja površine poprečnog preseka epruvete. Predstavljena naponska analiza je urađena tako da nema uticaja osnovnih i dodatnih materijala na dobijene rezultate napona. Može se zaključiti da je predložena metoda pogodna za određivanje parametara čvrstoće i kod ostalih tipova zavarenih spojeva kao i osnovnih materijala u inverznom postupku. Dakle, prilikom ispitivanja materijala kod kojih nisu poznate početne vrednosti potrebnih dimenzija (''overmatching'' zavareni spojevi ili osnovni materijali), može se ustanoviti inverzna metoda preko merenja krajnjih dimenzija i izračunavanja početnih, čime bi se dobile sve potrebne dimenzije za upotrebu predložene metode.
AB  - Determining the actual stress-strain diagram is a decades-long problem, because real-time strain determination methods on all three axes have only recently become a reality of scientific testing. Advances in optical methods for determining strains during tensile testing have made it possible to measure sample strains in real time. This possibility was provided by the application of the stereometric method for strain measurement. Therefore, by applying two cameras and a software package for processing the obtained results, we are finally able to determine the actual tensile diagram, ie. Actual stress-strain diagram. This disertation presents the methodology for determininig the actual stress-strain diagram for undermatching welded joints on martensitic steel. Used methods are digital image correlation (DIC) and FEM with software packages Aramis and Abaqus. The tensile diagram which is commonly used is called an engineering diagram, because the stresses and strains presented are not true, ie. they are obtained using formulas that are valid only until cross section of the specimen begin to change, necking of the sample ocurs. In addition to the engineering diagram, there is also a ’true’ diagram obtained by using corrected formulas. This principle to, does not provide true results because it does not take into account the reduction of cross section and stress concentration that occurs at the necking site of the specimen. This disertation considered an approach that the triaxial stress state that occurs after the formation of the neck leads to an increase in the stress to which the specimen is exposed and presented a method of obtaining the necessary parameters for determining the actual diagram, which includes the stress concentration at the necking site of the specimen. The presented stress analysis was done so that there is no influence of basic and filler materials on the obtained results of stresses. It can be concluded that the proposed method is suitable for determining the strength parameters in other types of welded joints as well as basic materials in the inverse process. Therefore, when testing materials for which we do not have initial values of required dimensions (overmatching welded joints or basic materials), we can establish an inverse method by measuring the final dimensions of the sample and calculating the initial ones, which would give all the necessary dimensions for using the proposed method.

U okviru ove disertacije, razmotren je pristup da troosno stanje napona, koje se javlja nakon stvaranja ''vrata'', dovodi do porasta napona kom je epruveta izložena i predstavljen je način dobijanja potrebnih parametara za određivanje stvarnog dijagrama koji uzima u obzir i koncentraciju napona na mestu suženja koja je, kako će se ispostaviti, dominantan parametar za porast napona pored smanjenja površine poprečnog preseka epruvete. Predstavljena naponska analiza je urađena tako da nema uticaja osnovnih i dodatnih materijala na dobijene rezultate napona. Može se zaključiti da je predložena metoda pogodna za određivanje parametara čvrstoće i kod ostalih tipova zavarenih spojeva kao i osnovnih materijala u inverznom postupku. Dakle, prilikom ispitivanja materijala kod kojih nisu poznate početne vrednosti potrebnih dimenzija (''overmatching'' zavareni spojevi ili osnovni materijali), može se ustanoviti inverzna metoda preko merenja krajnjih dimenzija i izračunavanja početnih, čime bi se dobile sve potrebne dimenzije za upotrebu predložene metode., Determining the actual stress-strain diagram is a decades-long problem, because real-time strain determination methods on all three axes have only recently become a reality of scientific testing. The tensile diagram which is commonly used is called an engineering diagram, because the stresses and strains presented are not true, ie. they are obtained using formulas that are valid only until cross section of the specimen begin to change, necking of the sample ocurs. In addition to the engineering diagram, there is also a ’true’ diagram obtained by using corrected formulas. This principle to, does not provide true results because it does not take into account the reduction of cross section and stress concentration that occurs at the necking site of the specimen. This disertation considered an approach that the triaxial stress state that occurs after the formation of the neck leads to an increase in the stress to which the specimen is exposed and presented a method of obtaining the necessary parameters for determining the actual diagram, which includes the stress concentration at the necking site of the specimen. The presented stress analysis was done so that there is no influence of basic and filler materials on the obtained results of stresses. It can be concluded that the proposed method is suitable for determining the strength parameters in other types of welded joints as well as basic materials in the inverse process. Therefore, when testing materials for which we do not have initial values of required dimensions (overmatching welded joints or basic materials), we can establish an inverse method by measuring the final dimensions of the sample and calculating the initial ones, which would give all the necessary dimensions for using the proposed method.",

AB  - Одређивање стварног дијаграма напон-деформација представља вишедеценијски проблем јер методе одређивања деформација, по све три осе, у реалном времену тек од недавно представљају реалност научног испитивања. Напретком оптичких метода за одређивање деформација, приликом испитивања затезањем дошло се до могућности мерења деформација узоркa у реалном времену. Ову могућност је обезбедила примена стереометријског начина мерења деформација. Дакле применом две камере и софтверских пакета за обраду добијених резултата, коначно постоји прилика да се одреди стварни дијаграм затезања тј. стварни дијаграм напон-деформација. У оквиру ове дисертације приказана је методологија одређивања стварног дијаграма напон-деформација за ’’undermatching’’ заварени спој, на мартензитном челику. Коришћена је корелација дигиталних слика (DIC) и метода коначних елемената (FEM) уз употребу софтверских пакета Aramis и Abaqus.Дијаграм затезања који се најчешће користи назива се ''инжењерски дијаграм'', јер напони и деформације који су представљени на њему нису стварни тј. добијени су употребом формула које важе само до тренутка када на епрувети почне стварање ''врата''. Поред овог дијаграма често се користи и ''стварни'' дијаграм затезања, који се добија употребом коригованих формула којима је израчунат инжењерски дијаграм. Ни овај приступ не даје тачне вредности напона нити деформација јер не узима у обзир сужење епрувете и локалне промене димензија као ни концентрацију напона која се јавља на месту сужења. У оквиру ове дисертације, размотрен је приступ да троосно стање напона, које се јавља након стварања ''врата'', доводи до пораста напона ком је епрувета изложена и представљен је начин добијања потребних параметара за одређивање стварног дијаграма који узима у обзир и концентрацију напона на месту сужења која је, како ће се испоставити, доминантан параметар за пораст напона поред смањења површине попречног пресека епрувете. Представљена напонска анализа је урађена тако да нема утицаја основних и додатних материјала на добијене резултате напона. Може се закључити да је предложена метода погодна за одређивање параметара чврстоће и код осталих типова заварених спојева као и основних материјала у инверзном поступку. Дакле, приликом испитивања материјала код којих нису познате почетне вредности потребних димензија (''overmatching'' заварени спојеви или основни материјали), може се установити инверзна метода преко мерења крајњих димензија и израчунавања почетних, чиме би се добиле све потребне димензије за употребу предложене методе.

AB  - Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is applied to evaluate stress-strain diagrams for welded joints in two different ways. The first one is based on the measures strains along the welded joint, including all 3 zones of interest, base metal (BM), weld metal (WM), and heat-affected-zone (HAZ) subdivided into fine grain (FG) and coarse grain (CG) subzones. AB  - This paper presents new methodology for determining the actual stress-strain diagram based on analytical equations, in combination with numerical and experimental data. The first step was to use the 3D digital image correlation (DIC) to estimate true stress-strain diagram by replacing common analytical expression for contraction with measured values. Next step was to estimate the stress concentration by using a new methodology, based on recently introduced analytical expressions and numerical verification by the finite element method (FEM), to obtain actual stress-strain diagrams, as named in this paper. The essence of new methodology is to introduce stress concentration factor into the procedure of actual stress evaluation. New methodology is then applied to determine actual stress-strain diagrams for two undermatched welded joints with different rectangular cross-section and groove shapes, made of martensitic steels X10 CrMoVNb 9-1 and Armox 500T. Results indicated that new methodology is a general one, since it is not dependent on welded joint material and geometry.

AB  - True stress-strain curves of HSLA steel welded joint regions were estimated by using numerical simulation of strains measured by DIC and special iteration procedure to match the results. Strains were measured at certain level of loading in all regions of welded joint with different tensile properties, namely base metal (BM), weld metal (WM) and two subzones of Heat-Affected-Zone (fine grain, FGHAZ, and coarse grain CGHAZ). By converting engineering stress (load divided by initial cross section area) into true stress, experimental true stress-true strain curves are obtained and used as initial iteration for the Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation, after being fitted by the power law relation for stress-strain curves. Obtained results are then compared with the experimental results to fmd the differences and make appropriate correction in power law curves and make as many iterations as needed before the differences become small enough. This procedure has been verified by an example of welded tensile panel.

AB  - Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) represent one of the technologies to process polymer materials in the way
of rapid prototyping. Parts produced by this method not so rarely have good mechanical properties in the
tangential direction in relation to the direction of the layers, but at the same time poor in the normal direction.
In order to produce a part that has desired mechanical properties in all directions, it is necessary to precisely
established printing conditions, which is one of the goals of this paper. Tensile strength experiments were
conducted on bio-based plastic PLA (polylactic acid) specimens. Specimens were produced on a 3D printer,
with printing speed from 40 up to 120 mm/min, and nozzle temperature from 170 up to 210 °C. It was
established that tensile strength has a great dependence on the printing conditions. Also, the type of fracture
varies depending on printing temperature. Although there is a trend of maximal deformation growth with
increasing printing temperature, at lower printing temperature, more ductile fracture of the specimens occurs.
Increasing the printing temperature, fracture of the specimens becomes more brittle. At the transition from one
to another, tearing of the specimens occur. Such results play a key role in the successful implementation of
such a processing type of polymer materials in the automotive, aerospace, medical, etc. industries.

AB  - In this paper is presented behavior of microalloyed steel weld metal with niobium during impact testing, as well as microstructural characterization. Impact tests were done on instrumented Charpy pendulum at room temperature, at -40 degrees C and -55 degrees C. At room temperature, crack propagation energy is much higher than crack initiation energy, while at -40 degrees C and -55 degrees C crack growth energy is lower than crack initiation energy. Fractographic investigation of the fracture surfaces has shown that at room temperature ductile trans-granular fracture is dominant, with a small amount of brittle trans-granular fracture. At lower temperature, the share of brittle fracture is increased, and inter-granular brittle fracture becomes dominant

AB  - Stabilnost procesa zavarivanja ima značajan uticaj na postizanje propisanog
nivoa kvaliteta zavarenog spoja. Povećanje stabilnosti utiče na smanjenje
mogućnosti pojave nesavršenosti, odnosno grešaka u samom spoju. Stabilnost procesa zavarivanja se ogleda u stabilnosti električnog luka. Promene
dužine luka tokom zavarivanja utiču na varijaciju parametara zavarivanja,
tačnije na jačinu struje i napon. Na osnovu praćenja parametara zavarivanja
u realnom vremenu može se izvršiti statistička analiza dobijenih rezultata.
U radu je prikazan uticaj brzine dovođenja žice i vrste zaštitne atmosfere na
stabilnost MIG/MAG postupka zavarivanja pri upotrebi metalne punjene
elektrodne žice.

AB  - Zavarivanje se široko primenjuje u industriji pri izradi različite opreme,
mostova, kranova, transportnih sredstava i sl. Ono ima odlučujući uticaj na
kvalitet, pouzdanost, vek i cenu izrade navedenih konstrukcija. Međutim,
kvalitet izvedenih zavarenih spojeva je teško ili je često gotovo nemoguće
utvrditi ispitivanjima na samim konstrukcijama. Zbog toga je potrebno
praćenje toka izrade zavarenih konstrukcija od ugovaranja i projektovanja,
preko kvalifikacije i sertifikacije osoblja i opreme, kvalifikacije procedura
zavarivanja i kontrole tokom i nakon završene izrade konstrukcije. Zahtevi za
kvalitet koje treba ispuniti u pojedinim fazama izrade konstrukcija definisani
su u standardima serije EN ISO 3834.
Odstupanja izvedenog kvaliteta zavarenih spojeva od potrebnog najčešće
nastaju u fazi zavarivanja. Do sada nije postojala mogućnost za kontinualno
praćenje, beleženje i skladištenje podataka o parametrima zavarivanja. U radu
je prikazan sistem zasnovan na informacionim tehnologijama, koji omogućava
prikupljanje i beleženje podataka o parametrima zavarivanja, upotrebljenim
materijalima i angažovanim zavarivačima, njihovo poređenje sa zadatim vrednostima i obustavljanje zavarivanja u slučajevima utvrđenih odstupanja. Na
taj način se znatno poboljšava kvalitet i pouzdanost zavarenih konstrukcija.
