AB  - Digital transformation of business activities has outgrown from
competitive advantage to necessity in recent years. Evolution of
information and communication technologies (ICT) has created
the world where electronic business (E-Business), document
management systems (DMS) and enterprise resource planning
(ERP) solutions have become standard, even for micro, small
and medium enterprises (MSME) in developing countries.
Modern businesses focus on implementing data analysis,
business intelligence (BI) and even artificial intelligence (AI)
concepts in their everyday activities, thus the digitalization of
business activities is simply considered as default. Nevertheless,
public companies in developing countries fall behind and
struggle in this transformation process, as usual. Due to various
reasons, they are still in the phase of digitalization, rather than
implementing advanced solutions. Any organizational change
demands unfreezing and mindset redirection, among both
management and executors, which is always challenging,
especially in the public sector. This paper aims to explain the
preconditions and benefits of digital transition of the train
maintenance process, and key challenges in such transformation.

AB  - This paper explains the problem of more pronounced heating of the wheels and wear of the brake shoes of equally loaded railway vehicles with SS or S2 tread brakes compared to wagons with S0 or S1 brakes when they are in the same train composition. As the mass of the railway vehicle increases and the square of the speed increases, the energy that is converted into heat during braking increases. In the case of tread brakes, this heat is dissipated to a lesser extent through the shoes, and to a greater extent through the wheel. Due to the uneven temperature field, parts of the wheel expand differently, and thermal stresses arise in the wheel. During extreme braking, the thermal stresses in the circumferential part of the wheel can exceed the yield point of the material, and as a result, permanent deformations occur due to circumferential compression. After cooling, residual tensile stresses are created in the direction of the wheel circumference. In extreme cases, this can cause the wheels to crack. For this reason, it is necessary to limit the intensity of braking, especially during long-term partial braking due to speed regulation on railway down slopes. However, the maximum braking force must not be limited. This is achieved by introducing a variable load relay valve with kinked characteristics. The Kink valve is a relay valve of a special design, which, based on the level of loading of the wagon, maps the pressure in the brake cylinder, so that when braking from 80 to 100% of the maximum pressure at all loads, the braking force is proportional to the load, and during partial braking, in in the case of a load over 14.5 t/axle, the braking force is reduced, so that the wheels do not overheat during frequent partial braking.

Proof tests of geometric-kinematic calculations of railway vehicles

AB  - Geometric-kinematic calculations and experimental proof tests of the mutual position of assemblies and sub-assemblies of wagons that are in relative displacement are significant in developing new types of railway vehicles and especially in the application of non-standard solutions. In the case of standard types of wagons and standard solutions, compliance with the recommended geometric dimensions and parameters of the vehicle should guarantee that even in extreme positions there will be no irregular contact between moving parts of the rail vehicle. This is especially important if it is necessary to place some elements or parts of the wagon’s equipment in the zone of wheelsets and in the zone of the connection between the bogies and the car body. This check can be carried out using graphic-analytical methods, according to the methodology given in the relevant EN standards, ORE reports, and AVV publications, and the limit values of the angular and translational coordinates of the moving parts. Verification of these calculations and verification of the derived state can be done by simulating these movements on the vehicle prototype itself or using a mock-up. This paper presents limit values and proof tests, for checking the mutual position of the running gear and the vehicle car body of a tank wagon car type Zacns. The test was performed using a transfer table for simulating the rotation of bogies relative to the car body in the horizontal plane and by using pads placed under wheels for simulating rotation in the vertical plane. The check was performed by visual inspection and by distance measurements.

AB  - The logistical support necessary for the organization of type tests of rail vehicles is a complex task. Resources that must be provided are expensive and related to the complex organization of work in the field. On the other hand, the relevant European standards are technically more and more demanding, so the logistical support is also more extensive. In this paper, the focus is on the presentation of activities related to type tests of freight wagons. The testing of the brake system is shown in detail. For this test it is necessary to perform measurements on an open track, at different running speeds and different levels of vehicle loading. Given that the test is performed by decoupling the wagon, it is necessary to apply a number of technical measures that will ensure that the test is performed safely and with minimal risks. By applying the network planning method, it was shown that although there is a relatively small number of activities, each of them can be critical, i.e. in case of delay may cause additional costs, that can be identified during planning, but which are not recognized and most often not acknowledged by the purchaser of the testing.

Analysis of wheel contact surface damage and brake blocks brеaking

AB  - The paper presents an analysis of possible causes of damage to the tread of wheels and cracking of brake blocks of heavy-duty motor tower car VMT 980 C-GR. In order to determine the possible causes, a series of tests were done to check all the influences that led to the occurrence of these damages. The  analysis included checking the regularity of the brake operation, non-destructive testing of the tread damage, and visual inspection of the brake blocks. The correctness of the brake operation was checked by stationary brake tests.
The examination of the damage to the tread of the wheels was performed by non-destructive methods, using means for detecting microcracks and measuring the hardness. The results of the conducted tests indicate that the characteristics of the brake system are within the designed limits and are not the cause of damage to the wheels and the brake blocks. The measured values of hardness on the side and on the tread are higher than the minimum required for test samples according to EN 12362. The wheels are made of ER7 steel, which is used as a standard for railway wheels, with a chemical composition within the prescribed limits. Further analysis showed that significant surface damage to the brake blocks is a consequence of previous damage to the tread surface of the wheels. Visual inspection of the wheels showed flaking and cracking, indicating contact
fatigue and the presence of thermal stresses as the most likely causes of brake blocks and wheel damage.

The results of the conducted tests indicate that the characteristics of the brake system are within the designed limits and are not the cause of damage to the wheels and the brake blocks. The measured values of hardness on the side and on the read are higher than the minimum required for test samples according to EN 12362. The wheels are made of ER7 steel, which is used as a standard for railway wheels, with a chemical composition within the prescribed limits. Further analysis showed that significant surface damage to the brake blocks is a consequence of previous damage to the tread surface of the wheels. Visual inspection of the wheels showed flaking and cracking, indicating contact fatigue and the presence of thermal stresses as the most likely causes of brake blocks and wheel damage.

AB  - For many years, methods for assessment the safety against derailment of railway vehicles have been developed and improved. Possible approaches to solve this task are conducting real in-situ measurements or the application of MBS simulations. The goal of both approaches is to reliably determine the lateral Y and vertical Q forces and their Y/Q ratio. The limit values of this ratio, which should not be exceeded, are defined by standards and in technical reports of the European Technical Committees. Based on the complex geometry of the wheel-rail contact and other parameters of the vehicle and the track, this should ensure that derailment will not occur. In the experimental approach or measurement of relevant parameters, in Europe there are several methods defined by the standard EN 14363. All of them are extremely complex and demanding in terms of conditions to be provided and logistics, so in recent times tendencies are to apply simulations. This paper presents the results of the derailment safety tests of several types of freight wagons using method 2 of EN 14363. The application of this method was made possible by the development of an original wayside system for measuring the wheel-rail contact forces and the development of a hydraulic test rig for twisting a complete wagon. The results of these tests show that some freight wagons, although with standard running gears and standard dimensions, have quite high ratio Y/Q forces during curve negotiation.

AB  - The logistical support necessary for the organization of type tests of rail vehicles is a complex task. Resources that must be provided are expensive and related to the complex organization of work in the field. On the other hand, the relevant European standards are technically more and more demanding, so the logistical support is also more extensive. In this paper, the focus is on the presentation of activities related to type tests of freight wagons. The testing of the brake system is shown in detail. For this test it is necessary to perform measurements on an open track, at different running speeds and different levels of vehicle loading. Given that the test is performed by decoupling the wagon, it is necessary to apply a number of technical measures that will ensure that the test is performed safely and with minimal risks. By applying the network planning method, it was shown that although there is a relatively small number of activities, each of them can be critical, i.e. in case of delay may cause additional costs, that can be identified during planning, but which are not recognized and most often not acknowledged by the purchaser of the testing.

AB  - Draw-buff gear plays a significant role in the transmission and damping of longitudinal forces generated during accelerating and braking of trains. The role of the buffers is to protect the railway vehicles bearing structure, cargo and passengers from excessive longitudinal impacts. Especially when shunting freight wagons. For that reason, they have built-in elastic-damping elements that absorb shocks and partially convert kinetic energy into heat. This paper analyzes buffers with rubber-metal springs, which are the most often used in the freight cars nowadays. The static and dynamic force-stroke characteristics obtained by measurements on hydraulic press and during buffing impact tests are presented. These results are then compared with calculations using FEM analyses. The analyses included checking of the buffers ability to absorb a sufficient amount
of energy that can be generated during wagon normal operation and in the case of exceptional shunting impacts.

AB  - The increased capacity of freight railway traffic leads to increased noise pollution. The existing regulation TSI NOI defines the maximum noise level allowed to be emitted by railway vehicles. Consequently, the noise tests are mandatory type tests for all new vehicles. Experience from noise tests of different freight wagons have shown that measured noise level depends on many parameters and in most cases is close to the maximum permissible values. Contemporary design of the freight wagons has to be conceived such as to emit as low noise as possible. Accordingly, it is necessary to identify the main influencing sources that affect the noise generation and to find a way to reduce their influence. This paper presents results obtained by measurements of pass-by noise of a freight wagon, with wheels having different wheel tread surface roughness. It appeared that wheel-rail rolling contact as a noise source is very significant and may be critical for assessment of the railbound vehicles.

AB  - From the aspect of safety, brakes of rail vehicles are an extremely important system on the vehicle. Braking performance affects the normal functioning of vehicles and interoperability of rail vehicles in classic railway train compositions. All trains, classic and different type of motor trains must conform with the available stopping distances, which are predefined by the railway signalling, i.e. control length of a signal and depends on the maximum allowable speed for which the track section is designed. Apart from that, in classic wagons, which are combined and participate in the formation of different train compositions, mutual compatibility must be ensured from the aspect of used braking equipment and connection subassemblies, but even more important, braking performance of all wagons in the train has to be uniform within certain tolerances. This prevents weaker braked wagons from running into stronger braked ones, which can cause longitudinal jerks and may in extremes lead to a train rupture. Stopping distance during brake application depends on train braking performances, longitudinal running resistance and presence of wind and its direction. This paper deals with the influence of wind conditions on the results of slip brake tests and the estimation of a single vehicle's braking performance. Based on experimental measurements, simulations using CFD and comparison with the obtained results, this paper proposes a possibility to extract air drag resistance and wind force from the total resistance force. Presented methodology and obtained results may serve for further simulations of aerodynamic characteristics apart from braking performance, such as vehicle running resistance, energy consumption, etc. and for optimization of the wagon shape and design.

AB  - Large investments, research efforts and time have been allocated till nowadays for innovation of agricultural tractors and machinery, with the primary aim to increase their productivity, reliability, durability, as well as the environmentally friendly, safe and easy usage. Following this general trend, present work is focused on theoretical analysis of the forces acting on the links of the three-point hitch mechanism. The simulation algorithm and computer code have been developed for calculation of draft forces by two methods (following ASAE D497.4 standard and Goryachkin approach), depending on the three point linkage geometry and mouldboard technical characteristics, and calculation of forces acting on lower and upper links of three-point hitch mechanism. Calculated forces values, based on ASAE draft, exposes smaller differences compared to experimental values, while for the Goryachkin method improvement is possible by entering experimental values for soil resistance coefficient k and coefficient of dynamic resistance s, as we did in this study performing measurements on the aggregate comprehending tractor IMT 539 (IMT Belgrade, Serbia) and two furrow moldboard plough PTO 2.25 (OLT, Osijek, Croatia).

Numerical research of impact of tube wall thickness and polyurethane foam density on absorption characteristics

AB  - Implementation of collision energy absorber in bearing structure of the current railway vehicles presents a big engineering challenge. A main challenge is to develop compact absorber suitable for installation in a very limited space at the front beam. Beside to compact dimensions, designer has a task to create absorber with required absorption power and the most acceptable deformation scenario during energy absorption. Previous investigations of the different types of collision energy absorbers have shown that shrinking tube absorber gives the best output
parameters. The subject of this paper is numerical research of the impact of tube wall thickness and polyurethane (PU) foam density on energy absorption and specific energy absorption of shrinking tube absorber. Using this type of absorber, energy absorption arises: 1) elastic-plastic deformation of tube wall, 2) friction between absorption elements and 3) compression of PU foam inside the tube. The paper presents numerical simulations performed in ANSYS Workbench software using the quasi-static behavior and a plane axi-symmetric model. Analysis of empty and foam filled tube were done. Validation of developed numerical model was realized by comparison with experimental results obtained via previous quasi-static tests. Results of numerical simulations showed that increase of wall thickness leads to significant increase of mass and deformation resistance, respectively. Greater mass in comparison with purpose and benefit of absorber is absolutely acceptable, but a sharp increase of the deformation resistance may induce uncontrolled distortions of wagon structure before a fully utilization of absorber. On the other side, increase of PU density gives lower increase of deformation resistance in comparison to previous one and negligible increase of mass. Mentioned parameters were carefully analyzed and influence of them on energy absorption and specific energy absorption was discussed. Presented numerical analyses
showed that it is possible precisely to set absorption characteristics without performing experimental tests, and to reduce development costs by using validated numerical model

Static strength analysis of construction of Mobile lifting platform

AB  - Manufacturing of railway vehicles require use of many different special support tools which have a role to simplify production process and to increase productivity. Beside, design of these elements requires a special care about worker safety. Subject of this paper is static strength analysis of the mobile lifting platform designed for railway industry. This type of mobile platform is used for worker outside of the wagon body and can provide operation up to 4000 mm. Platform was designed from steel tubes, square and circular cross section joined by welding and moving joints. Hydraulic cylinder, with adequate and controlled initial force, is used for platform lifting and lowering platform. Static strength analysis was done using finite element method by SolidWorks software package. Bearing in mind very complex construction of mobile platform, simplification of numerical model was done. Platform structure was divided in three subassemblies: working platform, folding scissors and lower chassis, and for each of them numerical analyses were performed. In accordance with purchaser requests loads were applied on the working platform, while the reaction force was measured at constraints located on the lower chassis and at the joint between the piston of hydraulic cylinder and scissors structure. Next to primary analysis of the main platform structure, static strength analyses were carried out for fences and stairs. All analyses were accomplished in accordance to valid standards. Obtained results showed that the assemblies of mobile platform, including fences and stairs, are able to withstand load of workers and required equipment without permanent deformation.

Influence of head wind on the braking distance of single railway vehicle

AB  - Train stopping distance during brake application is influenced by the brake system performance, longitudinal running resistance and presence of wind and its direction. This paper deals with influence of the wind conditions on the results of slip brake tests. The influence is more expressed in the case of single vehicles tests and less expressed for the trains. The tests with and without presence of head wind were performed on the tank car type Zacns. Depending on wind
speed, measured stopping distances may differ significantly. Opposite from head wind, tail wind increases stopping distance and should be considered when calculating safety margin and setting service train speed depending on the wind conditions. The results may also serve for further analyses of aerodynamic characteristics of railway vehicles and for verification of numerical simulations.

AB  - The paper presents practical application of originally developed method for wayside measurements of wheelrail contact forces using strain gauges and an overview of recently developed similar methods presented by different authors. Presented methods were compared and some of their advantages and disadvantages were identified, including convenience for practical use. Some problems related to preciseness of location of the strain gauges application were emphasized. The main task for achieving reliable and accurate measurement
results using any method is to identify locations on the rail where it is possible to avoid crosstalk and to separate influence of the vertical forces and contact point position on the lateral forces measurements. Although different authors identified such locations, it appeared that in real on-site measurements due to existence of geometry imperfections of the rails, non-uniform foundation stiffness and other influencing conditions, calibration and some post-processing of the recorded data is often needed. Also, in order to obtain reliable results involvement of alternative ways for validation of the obtained results is very welcome including use of  alternative methods like identification of the contact point(s) and comparison with calibration curve families.

Experimental research of characteristics of shearing ring

AB  - Development of passive safety elements represents one of the most complex fields of mechanical engineering
and requires practical and theoretical knowledge equally. A new standard EN15227 directed at railway vehicle
structures defines the dimensions and phases of deformation of the end-of-vehicle structure during collision.
Serbian railways have many passenger wagons over 20 years old that have no crash elements. These wagons
are equipped with a standard buffer in accordance with UIC regulations. The challenge, therefore, is to install
crash elements in line with the standard buffer as well as to define a moment when the crash element starts
energy absorption. A shrinking tube absorber has the most acceptable absorption characteristics as well as
being compact and compatible with the dimensions of standard buffer. In this research, the joint between the
standard buffer and the collision energy absorber is a shearing ring designed to break in a specific way at a
specific force. The standard buffer is designed to withstand a force of 800 kN without permanent deformation.
When the force exceeds this value, the spring in the standard buffer is blocked and the shearing ring breaks,
activating the energy absorber. The shearing ring is made from quenched and tempered carbon steel that has
passed adequate thermal treatment. Dimensioning of the shearing ring required a series of experiments to
determine mechanical characteristics using reduced- and full-scale samples. Final verification of dimensions
and working principles of shearing ring was done via collision of two passenger coaches.

When the force exceeds this value, the spring in the standard buffer is blocked and the shearing ring breaks,
activating the energy absorber. The shearing ring is made from quenched and tempered carbon steel that has
passed adequate thermal treatment. Dimensioning of the shearing ring required a series of experiments to
determine mechanical characteristics using reduced- and full-scale samples. Final verification of dimensions
and working principles of shearing ring was done via collision of two passenger coaches.",

AB  - This paper presents a comparative analysis based on the results from static strength calculation of wagon body, series Sdggmrss-twin, and on the results from the real wagon test. The verification of results from calculations and tests and their comparison was mandatory for client's commissioning of the wagon by notified body. Calculations based on the finite elements method were carried out in the Department of Railway Engineering at Technical University of Sofia. Experimental studies on real wagon construction were conducted at the facilities of Bulgarian National Transport Research Institute by testing team from Laboratory of rail vehicles at University of Belgrade. It was found that the obtained static stress results are similar, which proves that the proposed models are appropriate and they can help to solve a wide range of issues, for example those related to lightweight design of railway vehicles.

Measurement of the Stress State in the Lower Link of the Three-Point Hitch Mechanism

AB  - Agricultural machines and their implements are subjected to dynamic loads during farm operations. Depending on the type of operation (e.g. lifting or plowing), lower links of the three-point hitch mechanism are exposed to stresses caused by combination of bending moments and axial forces. In this paper we analyzed influence of the soil resistance during plowing in the lower link and the possibility of its failure. The stresses were measured using strain gauges at locations with uniform stress distribution in order to enable more reliable comparison with finite element analysis (FEA). Recorded stresses vs. time were used for identifying mean stresses and amplitudes for different plowing depth and different tractor speeds. Due to the geometry of the lower links and their joints in the three-point hitch mechanism, during plowing and transferring soil resistance, links are loaded not only by axial forces but also by bending moment in the horizontal plane. Under some assumptions, FEA provided us to make relations between the measured stresses and the loads that caused them. Measured stresses show that links have significant safety margin relative to tractor installed power and soil resistance, which enables the possibility of their design optimization. Obtained results may also serve for further analyses of fatigue life prediction, measurement of the draft forces etc.

AB  - Aluminum carbody structures vs. steel structures have an increasing share in rail vehicle passenger fleet. New trams for Belgrade city transport with aluminum carbody structure after approximately three years of service, suffered from cracks. The first repair made by manufacturer was only partially successful. Two years after repair some cracks reappeared. This paper deals with some specificity of the aluminum structures repair process. The issue of the aluminum structures fatigue is compared with the fatigue of common carbody steel structures. Stress measurements in the repaired welding zone after second repair and reinforcement are presented. The test was performed with fully loaded tram under typical service conditions. Assessment of the future fatigue behavior is made based on the analysis of measured data.

AB  - Safety of railway vehicles is one of the most importance steps in developing and design of them. Passive safety elements have a role to reduce consequences of collision to a minimal by absorbing collision kinetic energy. Applying a proper standard and adequate design of railway vehicle structure has a direct impact on safety of railway traffic. One of many ways for collision energy absorption is the tube energy absorber which works on the principle of shrinking the foam filled tube passing through special cone bushing. Fill made from high density polyurethane has a role to increase deformation resistance during elastic-plastic deformation of the tube. Seamless tube was made from low carbon steel while the cone bushing was made from quench and tempered carbon steel. This type of absorber is designed to install in a line (behind) with standard buffer. Using this type of absorber energy absorption occurs by elastic-plastic deformation of the tube, friction between the tube and cone bushing and pressing of the foam. With the aim to show influence of the density of the foam on absorption power, experimental investigations of tubes filled by polyurethane foam of different density were done. Results of experimental investigations show that increase of density gives higher deformation resistance as well as higher absorption power. Further investigations will be directed to improve of absorption characteristics by chose a most acceptable density of foam.

AB  - Ugao naletanja točka na šinu je značajan parametar dodira točak-šina. Zajedno sa silama koje nastaju pri tom dodiru, služi za ocenu dinamičkog ponašanja šinskog vozila pri prolasku kroz krivinu. U ovom radu je analizirana merna nesigurnost rezultata merenja specijalnim laserskim sistemom konstruisanim za merenje ugla naletanja točka na šinu, ističući značaj teorijskog pristupa pri izboru odgovarajućeg mernog principa i pri identifikaciji svih uticajnih parametara. Razmatran je i uticaj pravilnog postavljanja i pozicioniranja sistema na koloseku na rezultate merenja. Kako bi se ocenio kvalitet sprovedene analize, u radu su prikazani neki od rezultata merenja ovim uređajem i njihovo poređenje sa rezultatima dobijenim simulacijom, primenom specijalizovanog softverskog paketa VAMPIRE Pro. PR Projekat Ministarstva nauke Republike Srbije, br. TR 35006 i br. TR 35045.
AB  - The angle of attack is an important wheel-rail contact parameter. Together with wheel-rail contact forces it serves for estimation of the rail vehicle curving performances. This paper analyses measurement uncertainty of the specially designed laser system for measurements of the wheel-rail angle of attack, with emphasis on the importance of the theoretical approach for selection of the appropriate measuring principle and for identifying all influential factors. The influence of the correct installation of the system on results is also considered. In order to evaluate quality of the analysis, some measurement results are presented and compared with the results of multibody system (MBS) simulation using specialized computer package VAMPIRE Pro.

Axial crushing analysis of characteristics of empty and foam filled circular tubes

AB  - This paper describes experimental research of improved type of collision kinetic energy absorber. Absorber
works on the principle of shrinking a foam filled tube of circular cross section. During collision, a seamless
tube is passing through a special cone bush, extrusion the tube and compressing the foam. Energy is
absorbed by the plastic deformation of the tube, friction between the tube and the cone bush and through
deformation of the PU foam. The tubes were filled with PU foam higher density. This new type of absorber
enables gradual increase of deformation resistance and greater absorption power with compact dimensions.
Scaled samples have been tested in the laboratory conditions. The influence of the PU foam and different
geometries on absorption characteristics, as well as the benefits of using such an absorber, are presented
and discussed in this paper. The results show that the foam filled absorber has approximately 12% higher
absorption power than the only extrusion absorber by itself.
