AB - The phenomenon of ductile-to-brittle transition in ferritic steels has been a ubiquitous research challenge for the last 50 years. The characterization of this problem using the fracture mechanics concept, from the earliest studies based on the linear-elastic fracture mechanics to the application of the elastic–plastic fracture mechanics, has become inevitable over time. The fracture toughness is not an intrinsic material property but depends on geometrical factors (such as the specimen shape, thickness, and surface roughness), defect type and distribution, loading mode, and environmental conditions. The pronounced scatter of experimental data on fracture toughness, characteristic of all ferritic steels in the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature region, necessitated the use of statistical methods for data processing. That approach, which emerged in the 1970 s, can still be found today as the basis for interpreting fracture toughness data in ductile-to-brittle transition problems. This paper presents a brief historical overview of such studies along with the problems that have arisen as a consequence of using fracture mechanics concepts, such as constraint effects, as an example. In the time-honored research tradition, all the proposed methods and models, as well as their criticisms, provided the basis for the development of new approaches to the ductile-to-brittle characterization of ferritic steels. Specifically, these include size effects and scaling of geometrically similar samples, with the aim of predicting material behavior beyond experimental limits. Brief outlines of two new approaches are provided in this succinct review. The criticisms of all presented methods are oriented mostly on the application domain, as well as their capability to predict fracture toughness, with short overview of their most conspicuous advantages and disadvantages.

AB - For heavy vehicle systems, within the power transmission chain from the driving machine to the working components (wheels), gears have a large share of application in the form of gearboxes, differentials and speed reducers. Their purpose is to achieve the highest possible output torque at the working components. In one heavy-duty truck, the gearbox lost its working capacity due to the failure of its vital parts: a tapered roller bearing and a helical gear. The analysis presented in this paper, conducted on the basis of experimental and analytical methods, showed that, due to inadequate installation of the bearings’ outer ring in the gearbox housing in one intermediate shaft support, the roller bearing performed its elementary function in very unfavorable working conditions of mechanical and thermal nature. Due to the damage accumulation, the roller bearing gradually lost its working capacity. As a result, the intensity of the working conditions of the entire gearbox increased. At the moment when they reached the critical value from the aspect of the gear teeth bending strength, volumetric destruction occurred, i.e fracture of the helical gear tooth, and thus the cessation of gearbox power transmission.

AB - In this paper is presented the 1-point method for material behaviour prediction, in terms of fracture toughness, of the ferritic steel EN 1.6310 in the transition temperature regime (-60°C and -90°C). Experiments were carried out at two different temperatures, representing two studies joined in one. Experimental testing was performed according to ASTM 1820 standard. This 1-point method is based on statistical processing (of 2-parameters Weibull statistics) of obtained experimental results, i.e. scattered J-integral values, of C(T) specimens with different geometries. Fixing value of one Weibull parameter and taking into account size-dependence of second one, fracture probabilities in the function of J-integral for large C(T)100 and C(T)200 were determined based on testing of C(T)50 specimen size. This research pointed out the sensitivty of proposed method on statistical sample size. One of the aims of proposed method was reducing the cost and price of laboratory tests in overall by predicting material behaviour and testing smaller C(T) specimen size. This research represents an upgrade of the Landes and Heerens works, and it is dedicated to their efforts in understanding and characterisation of transition temperature regime of ferritic steels.

AB - The large scatter of the experimental fracture toughness data, characteristic of all ferritic steels in the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature region, imposed the need to include statistical methods for data processing. Due to the inherent stochasticity, the application of fracture mechanics concepts in the characterization of the DTB transition phenomenon has remained a challenging task over the past 50 years. Various models were developed based on statistical approach to data processing in order to capture the salient features of the phenomenon, but all of them have certain limitations because of the intrinsic complexity of the problem. However, all these models provided a solid basis for the continued development of new approaches in the characterization of DTB. Such two novel models are compared herein. They include size effects and utilize scaling of geometrically similar C(T) specimens, with the aim of obtaining predictions of the fracture toughness. Both proposed models have the weakest link statistics in common. In the present study, the EURO fracture toughness data set for 22NiMoCr37 reactor steel is used and the experimental data obtained at temperature of -60 °C is selected to demonstrate the accuracy of the estimates. The fracture toughness measure used is the critical value of the stress intensity factor used in the master curve KJc [MPa√m]. The obtained predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results, taking into account the inherent scatter of the experimental data. The estimate of KJc cumulative distribution function obtained by extrapolation using the novel two-step-scaling method is sensitive to the statistical size of the input data sets.

AB - In this paper, we have considered tip interference and radial interference of internal involute spur gears. Equations of tooth profiles are provided and operating constraints for internal gears are defined. The undercutting and interference of the teeth profiles are the main problems for the practical application of internal gears in planetary gear trains, which requires particular attention in the design of planetary gear trains. The problem of avoiding interference of internal involute spur gears is especially challenging. Therefore, it is necessary to create the corresponding geometric models and express the above requirements by the corresponding functional constraints to verify the engagement condition. The developed geometrical model of the tooth surfaces is most helpful in the analysis of meshing interference, contact, and stress analyzing, manufacturing, measuring, and optimizing internal gear sets. The numerical results are tested by computerized simulation of the meshing of internal involute spur gears.

AB - The influence of the running-in process operating parameters on tribological properties of the block-on-disc samples in lubricated sliding conditions is analyzed and discussed in detail. Different running-in regimes are achieved by varying the normal load and sliding speed. After the running-in period, during which the operating parameters are varied, all samples are placed in a working regime under the same set of operating conditions. At the end of the running-in period, as well as at the end of the working period, an analysis of the changes in the surface roughness, microhardness, wear rate, and coefficient of friction is performed. Less desirable properties in terms of wear rate and steady-state coefficient of friction are noticed for the samples that were run-in with the operating conditions which were the same as the working regime operating conditions. In the defined test conditions, it is shown that the intensity of normal load applied during the running-in process has a dominant influence on the amount of wear and coefficient of friction value. It was also shown that the running-in process can significantly improve the roughness of the initially rough contact surfaces. The results of experimental testing indicate that the variation of the operating parameters during the running-in process can be used to improve the working ability of the sliding contact surfaces under the mixed lubrication regime.

AB - This paper presents the results and methods used for determining of probability of cleavage fracture toughness of ferritic reactor steel in transition temperature area. The steel tested in this study is steel know as 20MnMoNi 55 by DIN standard, typically used for structures working at low temperatures. In addition, the effect of test specimen geometry, temperature and fatigue crack initiation rate on fracture toughness was investigated in order to predict the fracture behaviour and probability of cleavage fracture. Two main studies joined in on one are presented in this paper. Testing in both studies were performed according to ASTM 1820 standard and the Weibull distribution with regression analysis, which includes fitting the experimental results in a logarithmic coordinate system, was used to predict the Jc values. Cleavage fracture probabilities in the function of Jc for large test specimen, C(T)100 and C(T)200 were determined based on the results obtained by testing of small C(T)50 specimens, for the purpose of direct savings and decreased costs of specimen testing. Cleavage fracture probability, represented by using Weibull distribution of experimental data will provide a clear insight into material behaviour at different temperatures. The influence of Delta K values during fatigue pre-cracking procedure on the fracture toughness scatter was also presented and discussed.

AB - The load distribution of simultaneously meshed gear teeth pairs has a significant influence in determining the relevant stress for the working capacity calculation of cylindrical gear pairs with respect to surface and volume strength. According to conventional calculation procedures, the influence of the boundary-ideally uniform load distribution, when all simultaneously meshed teeth pairs are equally engaged in the load transfer, on the teeth flanks stress state is taken into account by approximate expressions for contact ratio factor Z epsilon. In addition, this factor is not defined, no assumptions were given on the basis of which approximate expressions were determined, and no procedure for determining these expressions was disclosed. This paper defines a factor on the basis of which an analysis of the boundary-ideally uniform load distribution can be carried out. By observing the contact lines in the meshing area, when one and two or two and three meshed gear teeth pairs are alternating during the meshing period, a set of analytical expressions is developed to describe the boundary-ideally uniform load distribution of simultaneously meshed gear teeth pairs. Based on the developed analytical expressions, the limiting values of the gear teeth flank stresses can be determined more precisely and the degree of accuracy of the approximate expressions for the contact ratio factor which are given in conventional calculation procedures can be tested. The analysis carried out in this paper can be used for more accurate considerations of all cylindrical gear pairs occurrences which depend on load distribution, such as: load capacity, mesh stiffness, vibration, noise, energy efficiency, etc.

AB - The efficiency of thermal power plants significantly depends on the efficiency of belt conveyor systems. Conveyor idlers, as key parts of belt conveyors, are often the main cause of bulk material transportation systems failures. Testing the operational characteristics of conveyor idlers in laboratory and exploitation conditions is a prerequisite for any progress in the field of increasing energy efficiency of conveyor systems. This paper describes an analysis and discussion of testing results for different types of conveyor idlers, in terms of their performances under the act of predefined radial load. Tests were conducted on a new conveyor idler's testing machine developed at the University of Belgrade-Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The presented tests are performed in order to determine the quality of carrying and return conveyor idlers. The obtained results will help in solving the key problems in the critical areas of conveyor systems and will increase their energy efficiency. Finally, the expected results can potentially reduce the financial and energy losses which conveyor idlers cause in belt conveyor systems, as well as in the whole system of thermal power plants.

AB - Application of typization in the process of designing mechanical sub-assemblies and assemblies is one of the ways to reduce the cost of production. Therefore, nowadays, not only roller bearings, bolts, wedges, etc. are produced as standard machine elements but, by the usage of typization, a production of a large series of typified subassemblies and assemblies, such as electric motors, pumps, power transmissions, etc., is increasing. Increased application of typified parts, sub-assemblies and assemblies in mechanical systems requires an increase in their safety and reliability during operation. Accordingly, in this paper, the load capacity of the typified machine parts series from the aspect of their structural strength is analyzed. It has been shown that there is a scattering of calculated results of the safety factor of members of the typified series from the aspect of the structural strength. The paper presents a proposal for a calculation methodology by which the mentioned scattering of the results of load capacity of typified machine parts series can be significantly reduced.

AB - By kinematic combinations of toothed pairs with external and internal contacts, we can obtain planetary gears with a considerably improved performance than the corresponding ones with fixed axes, as well as planetary gears with notably poor performance regarding the efficiency. In regard to that, the reference literature and papers almost regularly emphasize that planetary gears, under the same technical conditions, have a smaller mass and a higher degree of efficiency than the ones with fixed axes. The main aim of this paper is to examine the above statement and to determine the scope of the gear ratios in which the planetary gears are more suitable than the fixed axes gears.

abstract = "By kinematic combinations of toothed pairs with external and internal contacts, we can obtain planetary gears with a considerably improved performance than the corresponding ones with fixed axes, as well as planetary gears with notably poor performance regarding the efficiency. In regard to that, the reference literature and papers almost regularly emphasize that planetary gears, under the same technical conditions, have a smaller mass and a higher degree of efficiency than the ones with fixed axes. The main aim of this paper is to examine the above statement and to determine the scope of the gear ratios in which the planetary gears are more suitable than the fixed axes gears.",

AB - A study of the influence of extruded material type and layer thickness on the surface roughness and the geometry accuracy on a 3D printed gear tooth profile is presented in this paper. A whole set of samples with the same geometric characteristics is printed from two types of materials (PLA and ABS plastic) and with different layer thickness: 0.1; 0.2; and 0.3 mm. The results of roughness testing and uniformity of the layer thickness are presented in this paper. By comparing the results of samples testing from PLA and ABS plastics with the same 3D printing parameters, a certain conclusions are presented at the end of the paper.

AB - Nowadays, rapid prototyping technologies are available at very affordable prices. This is the main reason why they are being used in almost all industry sectors. 3D printers are currently being widely used for rapid prototyping and development of the new products. However, taking into account the permanent progress of rapid prototyping materials mechanical characteristics (usually different kinds of plastics), 3D printers are sometimes used even for production of the failed parts replacements - operating at the low load and rotational speed conditions. This is the main goal of this paper - to establish optimal 3D printing parameters (printing direction, layer height and percent of infill) which will allow printed gears to replace failed steel gears, for at least some time, enough for spare steel gears to be produced and delivered on site. Taking into account previously mentioned facts, the application of the 3D printed gears can potentially provide the reduction of maintenance delays in different industrial facilities (factories, workshops, etc.) which will consequently lead to significant energy and financial savings.

AB - Planetary gears, obtained by the kinematic combinations of toothed pairs with external and internal contacts, are able to provide considerably improved performance compared to the gear pairs with fixed axes, however if not properly designed they can exhibit poor performance regarding gear efficiency. In this regard, and given the fact that majority of research paper concerning this topic emphasize that planetary gears have generally better weight-to-power ratio and improved efficiency compared to the gear pairs with fixed axes, this paper examines the above statements. The main aim is to determine the domain of feasible gear ratios for which the planetary gear sets exhibit better performance, in terms of efficiency and weight-to-power density, than the classical fixed axes gears. In this work, the model of instantaneous gear efficiency is presented and applied to study the efficiency of both standard and high contact ratio involute spur gears. Approximate expressions for the friction power losses and for the efficiency are presented assuming the friction coefficient is changeable along the path of contact.

AB - Modified 2.25Cr1Mo steel, known as a relatively new
generation, grade T24 heat resistant steel (7CrMoVTiB10-
10), is extensively used as a material for fabrication of water
walls panels - evaporator tubes in supercritical boilers of a
new generation in thermal power plants. A special
advantage of T24 steel is low carbon content and the
optimal content of alloying element which simultaneously
provides its good weldability and heat resistance. For
elements up to 10 mm of thickness, made of T24 steel
standards not foreseen previous and subsequent post-weld
heat treatment (PWHT). However, after a series of problems
encountered with welded joints, practice has shown that
some kind of heat treatment is necessary, in order to reduce
the susceptibility to hydrogen induced stress corrosion
cracking (HISCC). This paper deals with the microstructural
characterization of both base material and welded joint of
boiler tube (dimension 44,5x7,1 mm), made of T24 steel,
before and after PWHT. The aim of this paper is to evaluate
the effect of this type of PWHT on microstructural changes
and its possible impact on the susceptibility to cracking of
T24 welded joints.
