AB - Composition and production procedures of the mullite-based coatings for the protection of metal surfaces in the conditions of cavitation, wear and corrosion were investigated. An ultrasonic vibration method according to the ASTM G32 standard was used to characterize the coating. The change in the mass of samples as a function of the cavitation time was monitored and the cavitation rate was determined. The occurrence and development of the coating surface damage were monitored using a scanning electron microscope. Based on the value of cavitation rate and analysis of the surface damage morphology, the cavitation resistance of coating was determined. Coatings have shown the satisfactory resistance in the conditions of cavitation and possibility of application for the protection of parts of equipment in metallurgy and mining.

AB - Structural integrity and life assessment of oil rig pipes using analytical method is presented and applied to an oil drilling rig pipe. The new concept based on risk evaluation according to probability and consequence of failure is used. Analytical expressions for surface cracks, provided by Raju and Newman, are used to calculate stress intensity factors for different crack geometries. Furthermore, the rig welded pipe failure probability is estimated by simple application of the Failure Assessment Diagram (FAD) and used together with potential consequences to evaluate the risk level by application of risk matrix. The same logic is employed in the case of cyclic loading, i.e. fatigue crack growth, by using Paris law to calculate crack length depending on the number of cycles. Simple numerical integration is applied to take into account the change of the geometry parameter Y due to increasing depth of a surface crack.

AB - One of the major problems in numerical simulation of fatigue loading represents the generation of a finite element mesh, since the model with crack cannot use combinations of different types of mesh elements (such as HEX or TET). This paper presents the problem of the generated FE mesh during fatigue simulation of the Kaplan Turbine Shaft model in ABAQUS and Morfeo Crack software packages. The model contains an initial crack of 37 mm. Simulation was performed in order of assessing the integrity of shaft with crack. During the first attempt, a fined mesh in the vicinity of the crack was used, which did not prove to be effective in obtaining satisfactory results. FE whose size was similar or the same as the FE around the fatigue crack growth domain were used in the second attempt. After remeshing, the numerical simulation proved to be successful and gave more realistic results.

AB - Risk based approach to assess structural integrity and life of pressure vessel has been presented, starring from EU PED 2014/68 and API 581, ending with use of basic fracture mechanics parameters. In the scope of risk matrix, structural integrity has been tackled by use of the Failure Assessment Diagram (FAD), while structural life was assessed by means of Paris law, using fatigue crack growth rate as relevant parameter. Several case studies have been provided to illustrate this comprehensive approach, including penstock and air storage tanks in Reversable Hydro Power Plant, and two spherical storage tanks, one for vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), the other for ammonia. Besides the assessment of integrity and life, including some important issue like over-pressurizing, roles of engineers and managers in this process is defined and explained.

AB - In this paper, a spherical storage tank for the storage of liquefied petroleum gas is analysed. A design calculation of structural elements is performed according to valid standards and technical regulations. Seismic loads are determined. By using the finite element method, a structural analysis of the spherical storage tank is performed for the design case in which the storage tank is exposed to effects of self-weight of sphere with supporting pillars; complete reinforcement; staircases and platforms; snow; hydrostatic pressure of the working fluid; design pressure; and horizontal seismic forces. The zones with maximum stress values are shown and the obtained results are analysed.

AB - This paper presents a novel procedure for determining the actual stress- strain curves for undermatching rectangular welded joints made of martensitic armoured steel Armox 500T. The method is based on an analytical expression for true stress; digital image correlation (DIC) with two cameras, i.e. recording 3D deformations of samples; and finite element method (FEM) for stress state analysis of samples. Stresses obtained by dividing the force by the current cross-sectional area of the sample do not represent the actual stress occurring in the sample, because they do not take into account the stress concentration. In this paper we have analysed the stress concentration obtained numerically using Abaqus software in which the model's entered strain values are measured by DIC method.

AB - Risk based analysis of reverse hydro power plant penstock structural integrity is performed using fracture mechanics parameters. To assess its structural integrity, extensive testing of the full-scale prototype had been performed, including hydrostatic over-pressurizing, during the design phase. More recently, the Failure Assessment Diagram has been used to evaluate probability, whereas phenomenological analysis has been used to estimate consequence, in the scope of common risk estimation. It is shown that over-pressuring has potential detrimental effect on pipeline safety, i.e. structural integrity.

AB - A general procedure for heat exchanger design has been presented in the Heat Exchanger Design Handbook (HEDH) [1], but no precise criterion for determining baffle cut nor baffle spacing has been offered, and the emphasis is only on heat exchanger’s permissible range of application. In this paper, an optimization program has been used to calculate pressure drop, fluid velocity, heat power, overall heat transfer coefficient and middle temperature difference for various baffle cut and baffle spacing for the same type of heat exchanger, using the procedure in HEDH. This could be considered as complementary to the HEDH recommendations and can be used by designers and, generally, engineers for determining the right baffle cut and baffle spacing for their specific cases.

AB - Problem that is not very common but very dangerous for steam boilers is the furnace tube failure during exploitation and usually that caused by some defects base material or exploitation condition. In this particular case, during exploitation leakage was observed in steam boiler wave furnace tube, and accordingly steam boiler was repaired and inspected fallowing all relevant procedures and standards. Used standards are very important in order to achieve the necessary quality of welded joints and their applications are also discussed. Welding was performed with manual arc welding (MAW) technique, and inspection was performed on the welded surface. Hydro-testing (pressure testing) was also carried out. The causes that led to the burner pipe failure are also discussed.

AB - The effect of proof over-pressure on pipeline structural integrity using fracture mechanics parameters is analysed in the case of pipeline in Reversed Hydro Power Plant, made of High Strength Low Alloyed steel with 800 MPa tensile strength due to special design requirements. To assess its structural integrity, extensive testing of the full-scale prototype had been performed, including hydrostatic pressurizing. Since plastic strain was recorded during proof over-pressurizing, special attention is given to the fact that this is actually a mechanism for crack initiation and propagation. To investigate this effect micromechanical modelling is considered, as well as the Failure Assessment Diagramme. It is shown that over-pressuring has potential detrimental effect on pipeline safety, i. e. structural integrity.

Uticaj ispitivanja probnim pritiskom na nastanak i rast prslina u zavarenim spojevima opreme pod pritiskom

AB - The applied stress level which will produce plastic deformations in WM is lower than the BM yield strength, not to mention effect of over-loading. One should also keep in mind that welded joints are places with non-uniform stress distribution because of stress concentration even if residual stresses are released. Therefore, simultaneously introduced different influencing factors will produce difficulties for stress calculation of welded joints, so that the design of pressure vessels becomes more complicated than usual. Sometimes, it is inevitable to test the produced pressure vessel, using different techniques, needed for stress calculations and assessment of weldments behaviour under different service conditions.
Reversible HPP (RHPP) “Bajina Basta” is in operation since 1982, [2]. Taking into account that the failure of the most critical part, the pipeline (Fig. 1), would cause water overflow of the surge hub in the surrounding area, and the collapse of the entire plant, it is clear that special attention is still need to prove its structural integrity [3]. One of the most important effects is the proof testing, i.e. over-pressure, which is the main concern in this paper. Namely, there is a history of welded joint failures due to proof testing, e.g. spherical pressure vessels for liquefied natural gases (LNG) [4], caused by unnecessary plastic deformation acting as crack initiation and propagation mechanism. Some details are given below, as taken from monograph [3]..
It is shown, using different approaches, that the effect of over-pressure is detrimental from the point of view of structural integrity of pipeline in RHPP. Two approaches, one more sophisticated (micromechanical modelling), and the other, simpler one (FAD), lead to the same conclusion, that proof over-pressure is unnecessary challenge to the safety of the critical component in a very important power plant.

AB - Energy increase cost has required its more effective use. However, many industrial heating processes generate waste energy. Use of waste-heat recovery systems decreases energy consumption. This paper presents case study of waste heat recovering of the exhaust flue gas in a 1415 kWe co-generation plant. This waste heat can be recovered by installing an economizer to heat the condensed and fresh water in thermal degasification unit and reduce steam use for maintaining the temperature of 105 degrees C for oxygen, removal. Design methodology of economizer is presented.

AB - A pilot plant scale fiber membrane system was developed for the removal of dissolved oxygen from water via nitrogen vacuum. Feed water was introduced to the shell side; a nitrogen gas was applied to the lumen side, as an inert gas, of the hollow fiber. Outlet concentrations of oxygen in water depend on membrane module, inlet concentrations of oxygen in water, water flow, and nitrogen concentrations in inert gas and nitrogen flow. The effects of nitrogen purity on removal efficiency of dissolved oxygen were investigated. Equations for oxygen concentrations and efficiency due to nitrogen purity have been given.

AB - In many cases parts of machines and structures are exposed to wear or action of aggressive corrosive environments. In such cases, the structure integrity can be compromised in a relatively short period of time. Therefore, to extend the service life of machine elements the common practice is to protect their surfaces by coating. One of the possible protection methods is surfaceing. Due to a number of advantages the plasma transferred arc welding (PTAW) process has found significant use in the field of surface protection. This paper presents the impact of parameters of PTAW process on the weld layer geometry and on dilution of the base material and filler material.
