In general, the structural design of ships with non-standard main particulars or other unique features is evaluated on a case-by-case basis, according to the practice and rules of the classification societies. These structures fall out of the scope of the rules and are commonly referred to as unconventional. As a result, apart from traditional scantling determination and strength checks performed using the prescribed formulas for standard ships, additional sophisticated analyses are necessary to ensure the structural integrity of a novel design. This work focuses on such type of the hull, represented by the design of the unconventional shallow-draught inland container Ro-Ro vessel, first of its kind, fully developed by the Department of Naval Architecture from Belgrade for the EU project named NOVIMAR. Given the novelty of this vessel, and in conjunction with the analyses already performed, it was necessary to conduct finite element analysis of the hull using the rules of the Bureau V...eritas. Complete assessment procedure is presented: starting from the finite element modelling, followed by the criteria selection, result acquisition and finally, structural response evaluation. The study demonstrates that although extremely low height of the vessel reduces its strength, another unique feature, the closed deck designed for horizontal loading of containers, significantly enhances the hull girder strength.
