On Determination of the Particle Size Distributions of Kieselguhr and Perlite Granulations
Apstrakt
Kieselguhr (Diatomaceous Earth - DE) and perlite are materials of natural origin, commonly used as mediums for mechanical filtration in food and biopharmaceutical industry. Particles size distribution of any filter granulation, composed of these materials, has to be appropriately prepared. In the paper are analysed particle size distributions of two D E and a perlite granulation. They are measured by the microscopic morphometric method, ordinarily used in the experimental microbiology. The empirical probability density functions (pdf’s) of particle sizes are formulated for all granulations on the base of measured values. To find an adequate analytical function, a set of different functions is tested. The fitting procedure followed the iterative algorithm of Levenberg-Marquardt to adjust the parameter values. The basic purpose of approximating an experimentally determined pdf with an analytic function is to describe a large amount of information, included in the empirical distribution, ...with a small number of parameters. They are constants in the adopted pdf fit function, evaluated by a fitting procedure. The closest approximations of pdf’s characterizing a perlite and two DE granulations are achieved by logistic dose response, power and exponential decay function, respectively. This approach enables further modelling and analysis of nonstable matrix filtering medias. Based on the particle sizes pdf’s of different DE and perlite granulations, it is possible to determine an optimal medium mixture (containing different filtration granulations), depending of the filtration requirements.
