The parts of machines and structures are often exposed to
the action of aggressive corrosive environments, which in a
short period of time can provoke the loss of their integrity. It
is well known that for extending service life, the protection
of exposed structure zone by coating is frequently used. One
of the possible protection methods is hardfacing the stainless
steel of appropriate chemical composition and suitable
thickness on the surface of the parts that are made of
structural steel whose corrosion resistance is extremely low.
Due to a number of advantages, the plasma transferred arc
(PTA) surfacing process has found significant use in the
field of surface protection as well as surfacing buffer layers
for very different materials. The goal of this paper is to
determine the dependence of plasma arc welding process
parameters and characteristics of welded layer made of
stainless steel 316L, regarding selection of optimum process
parameters. Investigations were car...ried out on structural
steel S235JR which surface is hardfaced by powdered 316L
stainless steel with varying amounts of heat input. In this
investigation, heat input depended only on welding current
that was changed, while the other parameters of the process
were constant.
