The planar response of the bucket wheel excavator superstructure is investigated by using a four degrees-of-freedom discrete dynamic model where truss-like substructures are employed to model the pillar with counterweight arm and bucket wheel boom. Excitation is due to the resistance-to-excavation. Four representative geometric configurations of the excavator are examined. The fundamental frequency of the system is most sensitive to the change of the geometric configuration, while the fourth mode frequency is the least sensitive. The maximum displacements and accelerations are observed when the bucket wheel boom is in its lowest position.en
