Tribology of the Al-Si alloy based MMCs and their application in automotive industry

In this chapter, the state of the art for automotive application of MMCs with Al-Si alloy base and commonly used reinforcements is presented. It also comprises available technologies for MMCs production as well as mechanical and tribological properties of the Al-Si based MMCs. Particular concern was given on the personally conducted researches of the A356 Al-Si alloy MMCs with Al2O3, SiC and graphite particles produced by the compocasting process. The obtained composites tribological properties were compared with the reference material - a gray cast iron, which was chosen as a standard material for producing the engine cylinder liners. Future prospects for the research and application in automotive and any other industries of Al-Si alloy base composites are discussed.
