AB - The paper proposes an approximate solution to the classical (parabolic) multidimensional 2D and 3D heat conduction equation for a 5 × 5 cm aluminium plate and a 5 × 5 × 5 cm aluminum cube. An approximate solution of the generalized (hyperbolic) 2D and 3D equation for the considered plate and cube is also proposed. Approximate solutions were obtained by applying calculus of variations and Euler-Lagrange equations. In order to verify the correctness of the proposed approximate solutions, they were compared with the exact solutions of parabolic and hyperbolic equations. The paper also presents the research on the influence of time parameters τ as well as the relaxation times τ∗ to the variation of the profile of the temperature field for the considered aluminum plate and cube.

AB - Standard structural assessments of ship hulls include the evaluation of the elastic structural response. Elastic analysis neglects extreme and unpredicted loadings, which can produce catastrophic outcomes, such as the loss of the ship’s ultimate strength. Moreover, hull elements are considered unaffected by age-related degradation. Therefore, this study models and quantifies the effect of corrosion-induced structural degradation on the ultimate strength of a high-tensile-steel (HTS) cargo ship using progressive collapse and nonlinear finite element methods. Uniform and pitting corrosion are modeled through selected scenarios, which hull elements might encounter during exploitation, producing a total of 148 calculation models. The findings show that corrosion-induced degradation can significantly decrease the ultimate strength of the hull (up to 30% for the most severe scenarios assessed). Furthermore, ultimate strength decreases almost proportionally to the amount of wastage considered. It was found that stiffener corrosion has a significant effect on the total ultimate strength. This study’s aim is to emphasize the vast importance of including ultimate strength along with ageing effects in industry-standard structural assessments of large HTS ship structures, designed to last for several decades whilst exposed to excessive and unpredicted bending moments.

AB - Although the mining industry is the oldest one, it is still a major source of pollution with more people hurt or injured than in any other industry, while social conflicts around it are worldwide spread. Namely, mining projects still have direct and indirect environmental impacts and seriously affect land, water, air, biota, and people, while mining equipment focused in this paper has the highest footprint. The reason for the lack of progress in mining industry is the most likely the fact that in current research streams technology-centered design dominates. Our novel Smart Miner concept aims to create a step toward smart, ergonomic and sustainable mining machinery workplaces. It proposes a paradigm shift from pure technology to a Human and Data-Centric Engineering, which could be easily transferred to other industries, and develops solutions for raising the level of environmental quality in complex interactions between phys- ical, behavioral and organizational processes field, by matching advanced operator I4.0&5.0 and society S5.0 standards.

An original idea approval route starts with mining machinery operator wellbeing in its microenvironment and its cyclical alignment with stakeholders in the value chain. After development of smart, ergonomic, non-invasive and reliable operator aid systems for regulation of physical environment job stressors - noise, human vibration, lighting, temperature, air quality, workplace layout issues etc., which solve environmental and human health issues and influence overall performance, research passes to operator macroenvironment determined by organizational contextual factors, which also impair sustainable development results. Micro and macro levels are planned to be connected and balanced by real time analytics to fit high sustainability performance indicators in novel, flexible and scalable system, aimed to increasing productivity and production together with reducing emissions and decrease of accidents rate.

AB - This paper presents an analysis of train screw coupling used mainly in Europe as mechanical
connection of wagons in train. An analysis of train breaks apart incidents revealed that less than
30 % of the cases were caused by elements of the screw coupling, with coupling links accounting
for only 5 % of the failures. Therefore, the investigation focused on testing the coupling links,
which are safety elements of the screw coupling. The coupling links underwent various inspections,
including visual inspection, dimensional control, non-destructive testing, examination
of chemical composition, and mechanical tests. Dimensional control found longitudinal plastic
deformations of the links. Chemical examination revealed that the links were made of different
material than recommended, but their mechanical properties generally met the recommended
values. However, variations were observed among different links, likely due to different rates of
deformation during testing and operational conditions. Overall, the analysis and inspections
provided insights into the condition and performance of coupling links in the screw coupling
system, highlighting the importance of monitoring and maintaining these elements to ensure safe
and efficient railway operations.

AB - In recent years, Additive Manufacturing (AM) has become an increasingly popular method in industrial
applications for fabricating components with complex geometries, offering several benefits over traditional
(subtractive) manufacturing methods. Among all available AM technologies, ‘‘vat photopolymerization’’ is still
a reliable approach for manufacturing high-resolution components at relatively small costs. This particular
AM technology is based on the photopolymerization process where 3D objects are created by light-induced
solidification and it has been broadly developed and used in the past decades. Depending on the employed
light source there are three different subtypes of this technology, namely: SLA, DLP, and mSLA. Among all
three listed, the Masked Stereolithography Apparatus (mSLA) technology has emerged as a promising approach
due to the much simpler AM machine construction compared to the other two. However, the mechanical
properties of mSLA components have not been studied extensively, hence there is a lack of knowledge of
how AM process parameters and post-processing treatments affect the final mechanical properties of mSLA
components. This work presents an experimental investigation of the compressive and flexural mechanical
responses of components produced through this relatively new AM technology. A series of static and cyclic
tests were conducted with varying layer thickness and post-curing times. It is demonstrated that a thorough
optimization of the mentioned variables is required to obtain parts with the desired mechanical properties.

AB - Brazed carbide profile mill cutters are widely used in the machining of wood, wood materials, and plastic to form various functional and aesthetic surfaces. Tools of this kind are used in serial and mass production and they are built today using very costly 5-axis grinding machines supported by specialized CAM software that is very expensive too. The paper first developed the possible concept of 5-axis grinding of brazed profile mill cutters using universal diamond grinding wheel shapes. The developed concept of 5-axis grinding served as a basis for the developed approach for 3+2-axis grinding of the brazed formmill cutters which is the essence of this paper. Verification of this set approach of 3+2-axis grinding is performed on a developed functional prototype of a simple 3+2-axis grinder (Axes XYZ are CNC controlled, axes B and C are unpowered axes and have fixed positions during grinding). Based on the established 3+2 grinding strategy complete grinding of a complex profile has been performed on a developed functional prototype. Shape and measures of the cutting edge profile achieved by grinding are inspected on an optical measuring system and showed exceptional results. The established 3+2-axis method of grinding
is an economically successful alternative to costly 5-axis grinding machines, as well as to specialized software, presented in the paper through experimental and practical application.

AB - The three-point bending test is a valuable method for evaluating the mechanical properties of 3D-printed biomaterials, which can be used in various applications. The use of 3D printing in specimen preparation enables precise control over material composition and microstructure, facilitating the investigation of different printing parameters and advanced materials. The traditional approach to analyzing the mechanical properties of a material using a three-point bending test has the disadvantage that it provides only global information about the material’s behavior. This means that it does not provide detailed insight into the local strain distribution within the material. However, the 2D Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method offers additional insight, especially in terms of strain localization. DIC is an optical technique that measures full-field displacements and strains on the surface of a sample. PLA and enhanced PLA-X material were utilized to create three-point bending samples. The aim of this paper was to analyze and compare the influence of aging on the mechanical properties of PLA and enhanced PLA-X materials using three-point bending coupled with the DIC method. The results showed statistically significant differences between the PLA and PLA-X, for both the new and aged materials. The aged PLA samples had the highest average value of maximal force around 68 N, which was an increase of 8.8% compared to the new PLA samples. On the other hand, the aged PLA-X material had an increase of 7.7% in the average maximal force compared to the new PLA-X samples. When comparing the two materials, the PLA samples had higher maximal force values, 6.2% for the new samples, and 7.3% for the aged samples. The DIC results showed that both the new PLA and PLA-X samples endured higher strain values at Points 1 and 2 than the aged ones, except for the aged PLA-X sample at Point 2, where the new sample had higher strain values. However, for the first 5 min of the experiment, both materials exhibited identical behavior, after which point significant differences started to occur for both materials, as well as at Points 1 and 2. A more profound comprehension of the biomechanical characteristics of both PLA and PLA-X material is essential to enhance the knowledge for potential biomedical applications. The DIC method was found to be a powerful tool for analyzing the deformation and failure behavior of samples and for complementing the traditional approach to material testing.

AB - Failure analysis of welded joint with multiple defects was performed taking into account the effect of all defects, not just a dominant one. Four cases of multiple defects in welded joint under the uniaxial tensile loading were investigated using extended Finite Element Method. Two-dimensional Finite Element Models were made according to the tensile specimens with initial crack located in a critical area of welded joint. For each multiple defects case, numerical simulation was performed with three initial crack depth. Engineering Critical Analysis was made using Failure Assessment Diagrams for each defect that was determined as critical for its welded joint case. Numerical simulation showed that the geometry of the most prominent one from a point of view of structural integrity. It was concluded that the vertical misalignment in combination with a secondary defect, had the most adverse effect which can lead to failure of welded structure.

AB - Transport and mining companies are vulnerable to a variety of hazards, and this paper offers a novel conceptual framework for organisational resilience assessment at different organisational levels. It is based on a safety climate and performances assessment in companies in the transport and mining sector. The framework contains factor and reliability analysis and continues by applying the SMART method from the perspective of resilience corners: anticipate, monitor, react and learn. The highest resilience coefficients at all organisational levels are obtained regarding safety awareness, safety training and safety communication areas, while the lowest values are observed for risk assessment and the organisational environment. The obtained results indicate that the ‘monitor’ resilience corner must be improved at all organisational levels, employees trained and procedures changed, since employees do not sufficiently use experience from previous events. The very high values at all organisational levels of the coefficients regarding the ‘anticipate’ and ‘learn’ resilience corners indicate organisational adaptation to changes through corrective activities, rather than planned preventive ones. All hierarchical levels have good resilience indicators, except for middle management, which expressed an adequate resilience index, due to the lower ratings of the safety training, organisational commitment, risk assessment and management support areas.

AB - A novel concept of morphing airfoils, capable of changing camber and thickness, is proposed. A variable airfoil shape, defined by six input parameters, is achieved by allowing the three spinal points (at fixed axial positions) to slide vertically, while the upper and lower surfaces are determined by the lengths of the three corresponding ribs that are perpendicular to the spine. Thus, it is possible to find the most appropriate geometric configuration for a wide range of possible operating conditions often present with contemporary unmanned aerial vehicles. Shape optimizations for different Reynolds numbers and different cost functions are performed by coupling a genetic algorithm with simple panel method flow calculations. The obtained airfoils are presented and compared, whereas the proposed concept is validated by more advanced flow simulations. It appears that improvements in aerodynamic performance of nearly 20% can be expected at Re ranging from 0.05 × 106 to 0.1 × 106. The proposed methodology shows promise and can be applied to different types of lifting surfaces, including wing, tail or propeller blade segments. To check the viability of this method for producing airfoils that can be used in a practical sense, structural analysis of one of the obtained geometries using a simplified 1D finite element method as well as a more detailed 3D analysis are performed. The model is then 3D-printed on a fused deposition modeling (FDM) printer with a polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) filament, and the capability of the airfoil to adequately morph between the two desired geometries is experimentally shown.

AB - The paper presents an analytical model for travel time evaluation in double-deep, triple-deep, quadruple-deep and fivefold-deep tier-captive shuttle-based storage and retrieval system (SBS/RS). Under the assumption of the deepest location rule for the storage process and the nearest neighbour rule for the retrieval process, the expressions for single-command and dual-command cycle times of the shuttle vehicle and elevator are developed, from which the SBS/RS performance can be estimated. The model based on the probability theory enables the evaluation of all individual times that make up the cycle times and assessment of the average number of totes relocated during a retrieval process. Special attention is devoted to the modelling of the relocation of totes which block access to the requested tote during the retrieval process. The validity of the analytical model is examined via the developed simulation model. The given case study shows that the proposed analytical travel time model results match the results of the simulation model. The presented modelling strategy could be applied to bigger system racking depths following the same modelling logic.

The presented modelling strategy could be applied to bigger system racking depths following the same modelling logic.",

AB - It is known that Fourier’s heat equation, which is parabolic, implies an infinite
velocity propagation, or, in other words, that the mechanism of heat
conduction is established instantaneously under all conditions. This is unacceptable
on physical grounds in spite of the fact that Fourier’s law agrees well
with experiment. However, discrepancies are likely to occur when extremely
short distances or extremely short time intervals are considered, as they must
in some modern problems of aero-thermodynamics. Cattaneo and independently
Vernotte proved that such process can be described by Heaviside’s telegraph
equation. This paper shows that this fact can be derived using calculus of
variations, by application of the Euler-Lagrange equation. So, we proved that
the equation of heat conduction with finite velocity propagation of the thermal
disturbance can be obtained as a solution to one variational problem

AB - Optimal averaged Gauss quadrature rules provide estimates for the quadrature error in Gauss rules, as well as estimates for the error incurred when approximating
matrix functionals of the form u
T
f (A)v with a large matrix A ∈ R
N×N by lowrank approximations that are obtained by applying a few steps of the symmetric or
nonsymmetric Lanczos processes to A; here u, v ∈ R
N
are vectors. The latter process
is used when the measure associated with the Gauss quadrature rule has support in
the complex plane. The symmetric Lanczos process yields a real tridiagonal matrix,
whose entries determine the recursion coefficients of the monic orthogonal polynomials
associated with the measure, while the nonsymmetric Lanczos process determines a
nonsymmetric tridiagonal matrix, whose entries are recursion coefficients for a pair of
sets of bi-orthogonal polynomials. Recently, it has been shown, by applying the results
of Peherstorfer, that optimal averaged Gauss quadrature rules, which are associated
with a nonnegative measure with support on the real axis, can be expressed as a
weighted sum of two quadrature rules. This decomposition allows faster evaluation of
optimal averaged Gauss quadrature rules than the previously available representation.
The present paper provides a new self-contained proof of this decomposition that
is based on linear algebra techniques. Moreover, these techniques are generalized to
determine a decomposition of the optimal averaged quadrature rules that are associated
with the tridiagonal matrices determined by the nonsymmetric Lanczos process. Also,
the splitting of complex symmetric tridiagonal matrices is discussed. The new splittings
allow faster evaluation of optimal averaged Gauss quadrature rules than the previously
available representations. Computational aspects are discussed.

AB - We describe numerical methods for the construction of interpolatory quadrature rules of Radau and Lobatto types. In particular, we are interested in deriving efficient algorithms for computing optimal averaged Gauss–Radau and Gauss–Lobatto type javascript:undefined;quadrature rules. These averaged rules allow us to estimate the quadrature error in Gauss–Radau and Gauss–Lobatto quadrature rules. This is important since the latter rules have higher algebraic degree of exactness than the corresponding Gauss rules, and this makes it possible to construct averaged quadrature rules of higher algebraic degree of exactness than the corresponding “standard” averaged Gauss rules available in the literature.

AB - Three-dimensional printing is an innovative technique which is offering advantages in engineering in terms of modeling and processing, even shapes and geometries which are complex and are difficult to be manufactured with other methods. This novel digital technology provides advantages in production process of an individualized 3D object when compared to subtractive computer numeric controlled methods and conventional dentistry techniques. Applied digital workflow in dentistry embraces data acquisition with intraoral scanning, object design in CAD software and 3D printing with corresponding materials on adequate 3D printer. With the utilization of the 3D techniques, it is possible to make adequate digital models and to reproduce them with enough precision, which led to a transformation in dentistry practice and a wide range of present and possible future applications.
An important benefit regarding 3D printing in dental practice is the fact that various materials can be used, such as polymers, resins, metals, ceramics etc., even multiple different materials during one production process, if needed. On the other side, there is a handful of available AM techniques depending on the model geometry complexity and desired accuracy. Implementation of 3D technologies proved to be beneficial in laboratory and clinical settings, surgical and restorative
dentistry, and continues to expand in research and dental education. The aim of this article was to give one perspective and to review the techniques, materials and current applications of 3D printing in dentistry. As well, significance of waste and recycling of materials used for printing in this area is pointed out.

AB - In this paper, the problem of finite-time stability (FTS) for a class of nonstationary neutral nonlinear perturbed fractional-order time delay systems (FOTDS) is studied. Based on an extended form of generalized Gronwall inequality, a new FTS stability criterion for such systems is established in terms of the Mittag-Leffler function. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed theoretical results.

AB - This paper deals with a topic of robot following a trajectory in three-dimensional space with a prescribed velocity law. Considering the nonlinear nature of robot manipulators, and high demands regarding tracking performances, this task is very challenging, but also very popular in control community because of its importance in industrial applications. To tackle successfully this problem, we proposed a resonant controller, which outperforms classical control schemes usually employed in this situation. In this particular case, robot manipulator needs to follow an ellipse trajectory with constant speed along the curve. First, mathematical model of three degrees of freedom robot arm is derived with included actuator dynamics. Then, numerical solution of inverse kinematics problem needs to be calculated in order to obtain desired trajectory in joint space. Third, analytical procedure for designing resonant controller is given, with parameters of the controller chosen in order to achieve a good performance/robustness trade-off, which is a key element in modern control design. Finally, proposed control scheme is tested and results of robot simulation are given in the end. Final remarks conclude the paper.

AB - The most commercially widespread extrusion-based additive manufacturing technologies use thermoplastic filament materials, as opposed to vat polymerisation technology, which uses photopolymer resins. Thus,, for non-industrial applications and customised parts, ABS and PLA thermoplastic materials were mostly used for FDM printers, until the appearance of PLA and ABS resin for DLP. The development of a new resin material, ABS and PLA, presents a great challenge for customising 3D printing, as well as the comparing their mechanical properties.
In the present study, we focus on investigating the tensile, flexural, and compressive mechanical properties of ABS and PLA materials used in the DLP process. Five specimens for each resin were modelled and printed according to standard ISO 527-2, and tested on a standard testing machine. The analysis included additional processing of collected data using Matlab, and comparison of fractured surface images acquired by microscopy.
The obtained results showed that the differences in the mechanical properties of ABS resin in comparison to PLA resin are not unilateral. PLA specimens’ ultimate tensile strength (UTS) is higher for tensile and flexural test and lower for compression tests. In the case of elastic modulus, PLA specimens exhibit higher values for all three mechanical tests. Elongation at yield has higher values for ABS specimens in tensile and compression tests compare to PLA specimens. Definitely, both resin materials after DLP processing reveal better mechanical behaviour under compression compared to tension stress. Selection between these two is case sensitive and strongly depends on the 3D printed part application.

AB - Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies have evolved significantly in recent decades, bringing new trends to production processes. The advantages compared to conventional technologies are numerous: production is simpler and faster, geometry can be adjusted more easily, the quality of finished parts is better, less material is wasted, and costs are lower. Because of the wide range of
possibilities, the different AM processes and the materials that can be used, these technologies have found their place in many industries, with significant application in biomedical field. Flexibility in geometric freedom, in particular, is important for the fabrication of biomedical devices. AM technologies proved that diagnostics is facilitated and improved through the fabrication of customized and in-demand parts, consultation between physicians and patients are supported, and thus the opportunity to develop individualized, patient-specific medicine is provided. This review briefly outlines current applications and AM processes in the biomedical field.

AB - This manuscript is presenting the process of development of the original software application, e.g. the tool, to be used in assessment of the resilience level and the safety climate indicators in the industrial organizations in the transport and mining sector. The initial data that was used to develop the app was collected using the questionnaire in which employees, segmented in five different organizational levels (e.g. transport and mining machines operators, support workers, first line managers, middle level managers and top level managers), were assessing the present state and the importance of each of the investigated safety indicators.
Based on this initial database the starting measurement model was developed that was used to develop the application which calculate the resilience levels of the organizations, based on adequate MCDA methods and four resilience corners approach.
