The research presented in this paper refers to the ability of drivers to understand the information presented by symbols, which indicate states of automobile lighting. The testing included 4 symbols, two of which were ISO-verified symbols. This study of the usability of symbols on a sample of respondents showed that the understanding of the information presented using symbols is relatively low and ranges between 35.45 % and 70.97 %. Tests of statistical hypotheses revealed even lower values at the population level. Suggestions have been given that should initiate the improvement of the usability of this type of symbol.
