AB - The ecological footprint is an excellent tool to better understand the consequences of the human behavior on the environment. The growing need for natural resources emphasizes the necessity of their accurate observation, calculation, and prediction. This paper develops and compares four hybrid machine learning models for predicting the total ecological footprint of consumption based on a set of hyper-parameters predefined by the Bayesian optimization algorithm. In particular, K-nearest neighbor regression (KNNReg), random forest regression (RFR) with 93 trees, and two artificial neural networks (ANNs) with two hidden layers were developed and later compared in terms of their performance. As energy inputs, the primary energy consumption from (1) natural gas sources, (2) coal sources, (3) oil sources, (4) wind sources, (5) solar photovoltaic sources, (6) hydropower sources, (7) nuclear sources, and (8) other renewable sources was used. Additionally, population number has also been used as an input. The models were developed using a set of data that include 1804 instances. The ANNs were modeled using two different activation functions in the hidden layers: ReLU and SPOCU. The performance was evaluated using the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), mean absolute scaled error (MASE), normalized root-mean-squared error (NRMSE), and symmetric mean absolute percentage error (SMAPE). The results show that KNNReg performs the best with MASE of 0.029, followed by the RFR (0.032), ReLU ANN (0.064), and SPOCU ANN (0.089). Moreover, SMOGN was utilized to produce a synthetic test set which was used to additionally test the best performed model. The performance on the SMOGN set demonstrates good performance (MASE=0.022). Lastly, the best performed model was implemented into a GUI that calculates the ecological footprint based on user inputs.

AB - The utilization of construction and demolition waste materials for the radionuclide immobilization by sorption processes was investigated. Given that the liquid radioactive waste usually has a complex composition and that effects of competition may significantly influence the efficiency of the treatment, the Simplex Centroid experimental design was used to explore ions sorption from multi-component solutions. For the purpose of this study, the common components of construction and demolition waste, such as pathway concrete and different bricks samples, were used along with the multi-component Sr2+, Co2+, and Ni2+ ions solutions. The equations for the prediction of metal ions sorption capacities were derived. The coefficients that correspond to the linear and interaction terms were obtained using a special cubic model. Likewise, by analysis of variance, statistically significant terms of the obtained polynomial were defined. The investigation has shown that the most effective sorption was onto the pathway concrete for all three cations, while the highest sorption capacity was found for Co2+ ions. Also, it has been determined that concerning Sr2+ ion removal there was a competition with coexisting Co2+ and Ni2+ ions, reducing its sorption capacity, while sorption of Co2+ and Ni2+ occurred more independently on other cations in multi-component solutions. Based on the obtained results, the applied experimental design can be efficiently used for the description of competitive sorption process and could be a powerful tool for the prediction of cation immobilization in liquid radioactive waste treatment.

AB - Although the production of copper and its usage has been known for thousands of years, the search for the optimal process of its production is still in progress. The removal of the negative impacts of a certain technology could cost more, over a period of time, than the initial investment in the selection of the optimal technology process which would consider these effects. Hence, the selection should be supported by the innovative and modern tools, such as the applying of the multi-criteria analysis. This paper presents the implementation of the PROMETHEE/GAIA methodology for the ranking of the appropriate technological pyrometallurgical smelting process for the copper concentrate based on the eleven parameters which recognize the economic, ecological and technical aspects of the technological process. The implementation of the multi-criteria decision-making presented in this paper can be deemed as a contribution to the decision making tools, that is, to the one who makes a decision on the selection of the appropriate technological facility for smelting of the copper concentrates. The decision-makers faced with the practical need of evaluating and selecting the most appropriate technological process for pyrometallurgical copper extraction will get the greatest benefit from this multi-criteria model. The innovative contribution of this paper is also presented in the obtained model which systematically analyzes the ecological, economic and technical parameters of the copper extraction process.

AB - The production and use of copper is continually increasing year by year. The modern concept of copper production involves the selection and use of technology which is aimed at preventing the production of large quantities of waste by-products. Increasing the efficiency of the technological process is also important during tendencies to decrease negative impact on the environment. The aim of this paper is to develop a multi-criteria model for selecting the optimal technological process for copper extraction. In order to achieve this goal, the analysis of thirty copper smelters in the world which are using various pyrometallurgical process technologies was performed. The model was developed on the basis of ranking the performance of operating copper smelters by systematically analyzing the technological, economic, and environmental parameters of the technologies applied. PROMETHEE/GAIA methodology of the multi-criteria analysis was used for the modeling. From the aspect of research findings, the results presented in this manuscript fill the literature gap. The major outcome of this research is the obtained model which can have practical merit. The decision-makers, faced with the need of evaluating and selecting the most appropriate technological process for pyrometallurgical copper extraction can benefit from this multi-criteria model. The ranking of available copper technologies applied in different production conditions was done by using the developed model. This resulted in the obtained rank of the available technologies. The findings of the research indicate that optimal results do not come from the
best technology but from the best applied and the most appropriate one, depending on the practical conditions, in order to achieve sustainable production, sustainable consumption, and to reduce the impact on the environment.

AB - U ovom radu se numeričkom analizom rešava problem sastava mešavine u postupku proizvodnje
bakra.

AB - Many benefits resulting from the development of the heavy industry are, unfortunately, accompanied by many issues resulting from the process of generating the industrial waste. This manuscript is presenting the environmental consequences, resulting from long period of time of heavy industry production and exploring the possibilities to recycle some of the industrial waste generated during the period of more than one century of ore excavation and copper extraction in the region of Eastern Serbia, in the vicinity of city of Bor. First part of the manuscript is presenting the scope of environmental issues, resulting from the heavy industry in this region and the amounts and the structure of the industrial waste, generated in this area, as well as the influence of generated waste to the environment of the region. Second part of the manuscript is dealing with the potential to recycle and reuse some of this waste, analyzing technological, economic and environmental aspects at the same time. In the final segment of the paper, some practical examples will be addressed based on the research work conducted at both experimental and industrial level. Results presented in the manuscript are mostly collected during long term research of the project team from Technical faculty in Bor, University of Belgrade, in the field of environmental management. This way, this manuscript is based on review of the research papers authored or co-authored by the author of this work, dealing with water, soil and air pollution, published in leading international journals. Also, the manuscript is presenting the literature review of other international issues dealing with the environmental management issues in the vicinity of large industrial complexes. Parts of the research results, presented in this manuscript are financially supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological development of Republic of Serbia, under the project TR34023.

AB - Selective arsenic extraction from enargite based complex concentrate from Copper Mine in Bor (Serbia), using sodium hypochlorite as a leaching agent, was investigated in this paper. The aim was to assess the optimal conditions for the most efficient arsenic removal from the investigated concentrate, based on factorial design applied to experimentally obtained data. Five important factors with three factor levels were used as the input variables and experimentally obtained arsenic extraction yield was taken as the output variable. The first and the second final order model equations were obtained. It was found that the leaching temperature had the strongest effect on the arsenic extraction. The strongest positive interaction was between the sodium hypochlorite molar concentration and the stirring speed during extraction.

AB - In this paper, the production of copper flotation concentrate in the copper mineral
processing plant „Veliki Krivelj“ (RTB Bor) was analysed. The correlation between the input
parameters (copper content in the feed, consumption of lime, consumption of frother,
collector consumption in the rough flotation stage, collector consumption in the scavenger
stage and the pulp density in the rough flotation stage) and output parameters (copper content
and recovery in the final concentrate) is accomplished by a systemic approach. The data for
analysis were obtained in the time period November 2009 – February 2010 of the plant
operation. Data were collected on a daily basis for all three shifts. For the analysis of obtained
data, the techniques of linear and nonlinear statistical analysis were applied. Accordingly, the
starting data were used to develop optimization model, which could be useful for the further
analysis of the influence of input parameters on the final outputs – i.e. final concentrate grade
and recovery.

AB - This paper presents the experimental investigation results of the polymetallic copper concentrate oxidation process with the oxygen from the air. Concentrate characterization included chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF), and light microscopy. Chemical analysis and EDXRF results showed that the investigated copper concentrate consisted mainly of copper, iron and sulphur, with small amounts of zinc, lead, arsenic and other minor elements. XRD analysis showed that metals were bonded to sulphur in sulphide minerals: chalcopyrite, pyrite, luzonite, sphalerite and enargite. Those minerals were mutually bonded into aggregates, confirmed by light microscopy. The results of DTA/TG analysis were used for determining the mechanism of the oxidation process. Comparison between experimental data obtained by XRD, DTA/TG and data obtained from the phase stability diagrams, implied that the oxidation process of the investigated concentrate can be divided in two stages: the first stage consisted of sulphide oxidation reactions with the characteristic exothermal effects below 973 K while forming sulphates and oxysulphates, and the second stage, which consisted of sulphates and oxysulphates decomposition reactions and forming copper and iron oxides, with endothermal effects above 973 K. Kinetic studies were carried out in isothermal conditions in the temperature range (573–873) K. Calculations were done according to Sharp’s method of reduced half-time reaction. Calculated values for the activation energies were 82 kJ mol−1 for the initial stage of the oxidation process (up to 723 K), and 42 kJ mol−1 for the stage of the process where desulphurization degree reached 68–86 % for the oxidation temperatures 748 K and higher. Calculated activation energy values indicated that the reaction of oxidation is a chemically controlled reaction.

AB - This paper presents the results of investigation of the effect of slag composition and the
slag basicity, in the process of smelting of sulfide copper concentrate, on the distribution
coefficient (LS=M Me ) for the following elements: Cu, Bi, Co, Au, Ag, Zn, Pb, Ni, As, Sb,
Se, and Te. The research was conducted under the industrial operating conditions of the copper
smelter in Bor, Serbia. High values for the coefficient of determination (R2> 0.6) for the LS=M
Me dependence on the slag composition were obtained, which presents a high degree of fitting.
In the case of the dependence of LS=M Me on the slag basicity, obtained R2 values were
much lower, due to the much smaller statistical sample.

AB - This paper presents the results of investigating the dependence of distribution coefficient LS/MMe
for: Cu, Zn, Pb, Sb, As, Ni, Ag, Au and Bi, between the slag and the matte, on the copper content in matte. The research was conducted under industrial conditions of copper concentrate smelting, in the reverberatory furnace in the copper smelter in Bor, Serbia. It was found that with the increase of the copper content in the matte, distribution coefficient between slag and matte for Cu, Zn and Pb increases, for Ag and Se decreases, while for Ni, As and Sb has an insignificant change. Au and Bi are almost entirely concentrated in the matte.
