AB - Energy losses in the region between the runner and outlet section of a conventional hydraulic turbine have been the subject of investigation for a long time. In this paper as well, elbow draft tube losses are determined for the relevant wide range on-cam operating modes of the Kaplan turbine using a contemporary approach. The research considers the impact of swirl flow parameters, defined for the referent inlet of the draft tube, on the hydraulic losses. According to the methodology and obtained numerical results, a new formula for the calculation of draft tube losses is proposed. In the process of a hydropower plant refurbishment, the presented approach may enable more efficient and economically justified consideration of the performance improvement of the entire double regulated hydraulic turbine, especially in the case of keeping the existing elbow draft tube.

AB - Hydraulic losses in the region between the guide vanes and runner of a Kaplan turbine are commonly either neglected or considered a part of the total guide vanes losses. This paper focuses on the determination of these losses for a relevant range of operating modes of the Kaplan turbine model. The research was performed by numerical simulations using two turbulence models, wherein some of the results were validated by the available experimental data. The impact of swirl flow parameters, defined for referent inlet of the researched vaneless passage, on the hydraulic losses was considered. Based on the numerical and experimental results, a novel formula for determination of these losses is proposed. The contribution of the studied losses to the total turbine losses is also identified.

AB - Secondary losses, which occur during the energy transfer process in axial turbomachinery, have been the subject of investigation for a long time. So far, much more attention has been naturally paid to the research of the phenomenon in gas and steam turbines than in hydraulic turbines. In the paper, the profile and secondary energy losses in the Kaplan turbine runner were considered by the comprehensive numerical simulations using two turbulence models and by the available experimental data of the blade profiles' characteristics. The performed research provides a contribution to better determination of secondary losses in the engineering practice, its distributions and participations in the total turbine losses for a wide range of on-cam operating modes. According to the proposed methodology and the obtained results, the improvement of the existing formula has been done thus enabling more accurate quantifying of secondary losses in the runner of the axial hydraulic turbine.
