Analysis of the Biofuel Combustion Process in a Small Agricultural Diesel Engine

AB  - The paper presents the results of research into the possibility of using a mixture of various types of biodiesel
fuel with standard diesel fuel of mineral origin in a mixture ratio of 50:50, labelled B50, on a diesel engine
with direct injection intended for small agricultural machinery driving. The analysis was performed in terms
of comparing the pressure flow in the cylinder and the dynamics of the combustion process over the heat
release flow in the engine cylinder. It was found that with the specified fuel mixture ratio in the mixture there
were no major changes in the pressure flow in the cylinder and the heat release process, which indicates that
the given fuel mixture ratio can be used without problems to power this class of engine in long-termoperation, without fear of possible harmful consequences for the engine.

AB  - In the paperwork had been observed nessesery steps in the introduction of diesel engines final production
application in the last ten to twenty years, it can be clearly concluded that their development is significantly
dictated by the legal regulations on permitted exhaust emissions. In order to meet these regulations,
successively with the introduction of increasingly stringent requirements, improvements were made to the
engine and its systems in order to reduce the emission of toxic components below the prescribed limits, ie to
meet them. The biggest problem was achieving the required emission levels of PM particles and nitrogen
oxides NOx. This is all the more so because the requirements for reducing these components were very often
contradictory, ie solutions that reduced particulate emissions most often increased the emission of nitrogen
oxides.

AB  - Alternative propulsion fuels for diesel engines were highlights for a variety
of research activities within a large number of R&D labs in the world.
Curiosity, as well as basic interest in alternative fuel has been immense
because of its reproducibility, renewability, as well as good ecological
characteristics. Another reason for this interest is a favorable impact on
the economies of the countries engaged in their production, by processing
that kind of bio fuel. This paper presents the results of testing and research
of the three types of alternative fuel gained from bio oil. Analyses and
comparison of the dynamics of combustion process of these alternative
fuels were done in relation to the reference diesel fuel. Burning process of
methyl esters rapeseed (RME100), soya oil (SME100), waste cooking palm
oil (PME100), as well as of regular euro diesel fuel were investigated. It
was found that these fuels were highly usable in diesel engines if they had
been produced according to a proper standard procedure under standard
EN 14214. The application of bio fuel is also very interesting for the
propulsion of agricultural engines and machinery, because it enables the
individual farming of bio fuel products necessary for the appropriate own
machinery.

AB  - Interesovanje za alternativna goriva koja bi se koristila za pogon motora sus je veoma veliko u čitavom svetu. Zato se istraživanja vezana za ovu problematiku vrše u mnogim vodećim svetskim laboratorijama za motore. Razlog ovog interesovanja su dostupnost ovakvih goriva, povoljne ekološke karakteristike i pozitivan uticaj na ekonomije zemalja koje ovakva goriva mogu da proizvode. U predmetnom radu se daje deo rezulta veoma kompleksnih i dugotrajnih istraživanja dinamike procesa sagorevanja kod dizel motora pogonjenog metilestrima biljnih ulja i to otpadnog palminog jestivog ulja, sojinog ulja i ulja uljane repice. Poređenje promena u radnom procesu motora, pre svega procesu sagorevanja, je vršeno pri sinhronizovanom radu motora na uobičajenim standardnim dizel gorivom mineralnog porekla. Analizom zakona (toka) sagorevanja svakog pojedinačnog goriva, utvrđeno je da postoje razlike koje nisu velikog karaktera, iz čega se može zaključiti da su goriva proizvedena iz biljnih ulja, a po važećem standardu, veoma kvalitetna goriva za pogon dizel motora. Ovo daje mogućnost naročito poljoprivrednim gazdinstvima da samostalno proizvode deo potrebnog goriva sa sopstvenih zemljišnih parcela uz uslov da poseduju odgovarajuću opremu za proizvodnju biodizela.

AB  - In contemporary transport sector and especially in the agricultural production, there is a large
possibility of using alternative engine fuels. In the case of agricultural applications, the largest number of
agricultural machinery's propulsion engines is diesel, which allows the use of various vegetable oils as
propellants. However, this implies that these vegetable oils have been treated by appropriate esterification
procedures and adapted for smooth use in engines. Such fuels are generally called biodiesel as well. This
paper will present some results of an investigation of the combustion process of rapeseed methyl ester of
a single-cylinder direct injection diesel engine designed to drive smaller agricultural machinery, thus
engines. The results of the research are presented in the variant of the charged engine, whereby the
charging process was performed by an external energy source (electromotor and Roots compressor) under
laboratory conditions.

oils of several oilseeds on the exhaust gas composition of a direct injection diesel engine designed to drive
smaller agricultural machinery. The fuels obtained in this way are derived from the corresponding oils by
the method of esterification using methyl alcohol and a catalyst to give the corresponding methyl esters. The
physicochemical characteristics of these methyl esters are approximately equal to the standard Euro diesel
diesel fuel. During the research, a comparative measurement of the exhaust gas composition was made, at
the propulsion of the engine with these fuels, followed by an appropriate analysis of the results. A suitable
research installation has been formed to conduct these studies at the Institute of Motors, Faculty of
Mechanical Engineering in Belgrade.

AB  - The paper presents the applied methods of testing, observations, problems and experiences gained during the
development of a domestic high pressure pump at the Military Technical Institute, which can be of interest and benefit to the
wider professional public. The pumps are intended and specially designed for diesel engines, with the nominal power of up
to 1000 hp, and are produced in many varieties, in our country and abroad, in large number. The development of this pump
proved to be very important, as the foreign business partner cancelled the contracted cooperation in the production and
delivery of serial engines high-pressure pumps. Problems got even more complicated when the domestic manufacturer, after
the ownership transformation, gave up the further cooperation on the almost agreed production of the domestic pump. In
the last five years, efforts have been made to enable a domestic manufacturer to produce the pumps. Although it is a
company that has never previously dealt with the development and production of such mechanical and hydraulic systems,
the achieved results in production and the experience gained so far give real hope that the mutual efforts will reach the
required quality and create a competitive product.

AB  - This paper includes comparative analysis of the environmental, energetic, and financial costs of different bus propulsion, possibly applied on the public transport
in the city of Belgrade. It considers the modern diesel bus, the trolleybus, the natural gas bus with the spark ignition engine, the electric bus using LiFePO4 battery, and the electric bus with ultra-capacitor. The results are presented according to the real data and the real electro-energetic situation in Serbia, with the
dominantly used lignite coal as primary fuel. This model gives the exact exhaust
emission of electric vehicles at the thermal power plant, enables its comparison
to the internal combustion engine vehicles. The result in analysis shows that the
natural gas bus is the most cost efficient in economical way with overall exploitation price of $87 per 100 km. The trolleybus is more economical then the natural
gas powered bus only at high departures rate, higher than 230 per workday.

Uticaj poremećaja u procesu ubrizgavanja goriva na radne procese u cilindrima dizel-motora

AB  - Neujednačenost radnih procesa u cilindrima dizel-motora se može desiti iz više razloga. Dva najuticajnija faktora na ovu pojavu, a koji se odnose na poremećaje u procesu ubrizgavanja goriva, su: poremećaji u pogledu trenutnog položaja (ugla obrtanja) kolenastog vratila kada započinje ubrizgavanje goriva u nekom od cilindara, tzv. ugao predubrizgavanja, i poremećaji u količini goriva koja se isporučuje pojedinim cilindrima tokom jednog radnog ciklusa, tzv. ciklusna količina goriva. Navedeni poremećaji su daleko izraženiji kod klasičnih, mehaničkih sistema za ubrizgavanje goriva (pumpa visokog pritiska, pumpa-brizgač, itd.), i vrlo često se ne mogu preduprediti pri vanmotorskim ispitivanjima i podešavanjima sistema ubrizgavanja goriva. Simulacija opisanih poremaćaja u realnim uslovima rada dizel-motora, i proširivanje saznanja o njihovom pojedinačnom i zajedničkom uticaju na radne procese u cilindrima, nije nimalo jednostavna. Međutim, danas postoje komercijalni programi koji imaju ugrađene module zasnovane na proverenim jednačinama termodinamike, teorije sagorevanja i teorije strujanja, koje omogućavaju da se ova simulacija izvrši primenom računara. Jedan od takvih programa je program BOOST AVL. Rezultati simulacija dobijeni primenom ovog i sličnih programa mogu biti i pouzdaniji od simulacija u realnim uslovima rada motora, pošto je kod mehaničkih sistema ubrizgavanja goriva, vrlo teško kvantifikovati stepen poremećaja koji se želi simulirati. Dobijeni rezultati mogu biti iskorišćeni za razvijanje metoda identifikacije uticaja opisanih poremećaja na srednji indikatorski pritisak svakog cilindra, pa i celog motora, tačniju procenu mehaničkih gubitaka (stepena mehaničke korisnosti), itd.
AB  - Unevenness of working processes in diesel engine cylinders can happen for several reasons. The two most influential factors to this phenomenon, which are related to disturbances in the fuel injection process are: disturbances in terms of the current position (rotation angle) of the crankshaft when the fuel injection in one of the cylinders starts, so-called pre-injection angle, and disturbances in the quantity of fuel that is supplied to individual cylinders during one work cycle, the so-called cycle amounts of fuel. These disturbances are more prominent in classical, mechanical fuel injection systems (high-pressure pump, pump-injector, etc.), and very often can not be prevented during the out engine testing and the fuel injection system adjustments. The simulation of disturbances described under real operating conditions of diesel engines, and expanding the knowledge of their individual and joined impact on the working processes in cylinders, is not at all simple. However, today there are commercial software which have built-in modules based on the proven equations of thermodynamics, combustion theory and the theory of flow, which makes it possible to carry out these simulations by using a computer. One such software is AVL BOOST. The simulation results obtained using this and similar software can be more reliable than simulations in real conditions of the engine, because in the mechanical fuel injection system it is very difficult to quantify the degree of the disturbance which is to be simulated. The given results can be used to develop methods of identifying the impact of described disturbances on the mean indicated pressure of each cylinder, as well as the entire engine, a more accurate assessment of mechanical losses (degree of mechanical utility), etc.

AB  - The aim of this research was to determine the thermobaric effect of cast composite explosives, with different masses and dimensions of the chosen explosive charges. This was done by measuring the shock wave parameters in air (maximum overpressure and pressure impulse) and quantifying the thermal effect (temperature-time dependence), at different distances from the centre of the detonation. The chosen thermobaric explosive composition, TBE-3, was characterized. Its density, detonation velocity and viscosity-time dependence were determined. Experimental samples of different masses and calibres were prepared. The shock wave parameters in air were determined in field tests, by measuring the overpressure by piezo-electric pressure transducers. The detonation and the expansion of the explosion products were filmed by a TV high-speed camera, Phantom V9. An infrared (IR) camera FLIR SC7200 was used for recording the IR scene of the explosions and for tracking the thermal effects by a thermographic technique, i.e. thermal imaging. This work is an initial step towards establishing a method for the quantification of the thermal effects of a thermobaric detonation.

AB  - U ovom radu je proucavana mogucnost primene alternativnih biogoriva za pogon dizel motora sa direktnim ubrizgavanjem, kao i uticaj ovih goriva na proces sagorevanja i izduvnu emisiju ovog tipa motora. Kao alternativna biogoriva korišceni su metilestri ulja uljane repice, sojinog ulja i otpadnog jestivog palminog ulja. Ova biogoriva su korišcena kao cista (100%) ili u smeši sa standardnim dizel gorivom fosilnog porekla u odnosu 50:50 i u nekim uslovima i u smeši 25%, 50%, 75%. Takode, istražena je i mogucnost primene cistog jestivog rafinisanog suncokretovog ulja bez dodatne obrade ulja pre mešanja sa dizel gorivom u odnosu 50:50. Pored integralnih karakteristika motora: snage, obrtnog momenta, potrošnje usisnog vazduha i goriva, analize izduvnih gasova, protoka recirkulacije izduvnih gasova, snimljeni su tokovi pritiska u cilindru motora i vodu visokog pritiska sistema unrizgavanja i izdizanje igle brizgaca, korišcenjem akvizicionog sistema visokih performansi. Na bazi ovih velicina razvijen je i primenjen model za odredivanje parametara procesa sagorevanja. Koristeci ovaj postupak odredene su sledece karakteristike sagorevanja pri radu sa razlicitim biogorivima i pri razlicitim uslovima: vrednosti maksimalnog pritiska u cilindru motora kao i njihovi položaji u odnosu na SMT, zakoni oslobadanja toplote, periodi zakašnjenja upaljenja, trajanje sagorevanja i razvijene kolicine energije po fazama procesa sagorevanja. Takode je izvršeno ispitivanje uticaja svih korišcenih biogoriva na izduvnu emisiju motora. Istraživanja su vršena u usisnoj i natpunjenoj varijanti motora. Takode je detaljno istražen i uticaj recirkulacije izduvnih gasova na proces sagorevanja i izduvnu emisiju i to u obe varijante motora i sa svim korišcenim biogorivima. Poseban deo istraživanja se odnosio na mogucnost aplikacije komore za sagorevanje originalne konstrukcije sa smanjenim odavanjem toplote i uticaj ovog sistema sagorevanja na tok procesa sagorevanja i sastav izduvnih gasova. Dobijeni rezultati u okviru ovog rada se mogu koristiti pri optimizaciji radnog ciklusa dizel motora sa direktnim ubrizgavanjem u cilju postizanja povoljnije ekonomicnosti i izduvne emisije, pri pogonu biogorivima sa i bez recirkulacije izduvnih gasova.
AB  - This dissertation presents the results of biofuels application research in direct injection diesel engine, as well as the influence of these fuels on engine combustion process and exhaust emissions. The methyl esters of rape oil, soya oil, and waste cooking palm oil were used as alternative fuels. These biofuels were used as net fuels (100%) as well as mixed with standard diesel fuel in the ratio 50:50 and in several cases 7%, 25%, 50% and 75%. Also, the research included the experiments with pure edible sunflower oil mixed with diesel fuel in the ratio 50:50. Besides engine integral characteristic: power and torque output, intake air and fuel consumption, exhaust gas analysis, exhaust gases recirculation, the traces of incylinder pressure, fuel injection pressure and injector needle lift were recorded using high speed data acquisition system. On the basis of these data the method of combustion process parameters evaluation was developed and applied. Using this procedure for different biofuels and at different operating conditions, the following combustion parameters were determined: maximum cylinder pressure and temperature and its their position relative to TDC, heat release and the rate of heat release, ignition delay, combustion duration and the amount of heat released in certain periods of combustion process. The research was carried out under the naturally aspirated and supercharged engine conditions. The impact of exhaust gas recirculation on combustion process and exhaust emissions was studied in all operating conditions and with all biofuels. A special part of the research related to the possibilities of application of the specially designed combustion chamber with reduced heat transfer from the gases to the chamber walls. The influence of this system on combustion characteristics and exhaust emissions was studied. The results obtained in this research can be used for optimisation of diesel engine working cycle in order to achieve better fuel economy and exhaust emissions, under the conditions of different biofuels application with and without exhaust gas recirculation.

AB  - Vrlo važan literaturni izvor pri proučavanju radnih procesa u cilindrima motora, decenijama unazad, predstavlja članak Güntera Hohenberga 'Definition und Eigenschaften des termodinamischen Verlust-winkels von Kolbenmaschinen', objavljen 1976. godine u časopisu Automobil industrie, izdanje 4. Ovim člankom je teoretski i praktično (eksperimentalno) obrađena tema određivanja ugla termodinamičkih gubitaka na krivoj pritiska bez sagorevanja izmerenoj u cilindru motora. Posebna vrednost Hohenbergovih istraživanja je u eksperimentalnim rezultatima dobijenim osrednjavanjem izmerenih podataka na većem broju različitih motora. Pokazalo se da su ti eksperimentalni rezultati i te kako upotrebljivi za brzo, ali dosta tačno, određivanje ugla termodinamičkih gubitaka na krivoj pritiska bez sagorevanja,kod bilo kog motora. Dijagrami koje je predložio Hohenberg su od koristi i danas, bilo da se primenjuju direktno ili služe za poređenje sa rezultatima neke od savremenijih računskih metoda zasnovanih na termodinamičkoj analizi procesa u cilindru motora. Međutim, teoretski prilaz Hohenberga datom problemu kroz jednačine koje je postavio, daje dosta dobru predstavu o najuticajnijim faktorima na veličinu ugla termodinamičkih gubitaka, ali u sebi ima i dosta grešaka i grubih aproksimacija. Dobrim i lošim stranama ovog vrlo važnog literaturnog izvora kroz poređenje sa jednom od savremenih termodinamičkih metoda vezanim za problematiku određivanja ugla termodinamičkih gubitaka, posvećen je ovaj rad.
AB  - Very important literary source for the study of work processes in the engine cylinders, for decades, has been an article by Günter Hohenberg 'Definition und Eigenschaften des termodinamischen Verlust-winkels von Kolbenmaschinen', published in 1976 in the magazine Automobil Industrie, Edition 4. This article theoretically and practically (experimentally) deals with the topic of determining the angle of thermodynamic losses on the pressure curve without combustion measured in the engine cylinder. The special value of this research is in the experimental results obtained by averaging the measured data on a large number of different engines. It has been shown that these experimental results are useful for a quick, but quite accurate, determining of the angle of thermodynamic losses on the pressure curve without combustion, with any engine. Diagrams proposed by Hohenberg are used today, whether they are applied directly or used for comparison with the results of some of the more modern computational methods based on thermodynamic analysis of the processes in the engine cylinder. However, the theoretical approach by Hohenberg to the given problem through the equations he set, gives a pretty good idea of the most influential factors on the size of the angle of thermodynamic losses, but it has a lot of mistakes and rough approximations. This work is dedicated to the good and bad sides of this very important literature source through a comparison with one of the modern thermodynamic methods related to the issue of determining the angle of thermodynamic losses.

Dijagrami koje je predložio Hohenberg su od koristi i danas, bilo da se primenjuju direktno ili služe za poređenje sa rezultatima neke od savremenijih računskih metoda zasnovanih na termodinamičkoj analizi procesa u cilindru motora. Međutim, teoretski prilaz Hohenberga datom problemu kroz jednačine koje je postavio, daje dosta dobru predstavu o najuticajnijim faktorima na veličinu ugla termodinamičkih gubitaka, ali u sebi ima i dosta grešaka i grubih aproksimacija. Dobrim i lošim stranama ovog vrlo važnog literaturnog izvora kroz poređenje sa jednom od savremenih termodinamičkih metoda vezanim za problematiku određivanja ugla termodinamičkih gubitaka, posvećen je ovaj rad., Very important literary source for the study of work processes in the engine cylinders, for decades, has been an article by Günter Hohenberg 'Definition und Eigenschaften des termodinamischen Verlust-winkels von Kolbenmaschinen', published in 1976 in the magazine Automobil Industrie, Edition 4. This article theoretically and practically (experimentally) deals with the topic of determining the angle of thermodynamic losses on the pressure curve without combustion measured in the engine cylinder. The special value of this research is in the experimental results obtained by averaging the measured data on a large number of different engines. It has been shown that these experimental results are useful for a quick, but quite accurate, determining of the angle of thermodynamic losses on the pressure curve without combustion, with any engine. AB  - Процеси сагоревања код дизел мотора одлучујуће утичу на све излазне параметре радног
циклуса мотора укључујући економичност циклуса и квалитет издувне емисије мотора. Један од
начина побољшања наведених параметара је делимична или потпуна изолација радног простора
мотора уклјучујући комору за сагоревање, чело клипа, вентилске печурке, део главе мотора у зони
отвора цилиндра и цилиндар било по читавој висини или само у зони горње трећине цилиндарске
кошуљице.
Кључни утицај на енергетске и еколошке карактеристике дизел мотора има квалитет процеса
сагоревања који треба да буде што је могуће бржи и потпунији. Споро сагоревање доводи до
значајног опадања степена корисности радног процеса па тиме и до погоршања специфичне
потрошње горива, док непотпуност сагоревања повећава емисију штетних гасова као што су угљен
моноксид (CO), несагорели угљоводоници (HC), азотови оксиди (NОx) и дима односно честица.
Изолација радног простора изведена на неки од горе наведених начина или применом свих
наведених начина, доводи до побољшања излазних параметара мотора у подручју нижих
оптерећења док у подручју виших оптерећења долази до погоршања ових параметара, што је
утврђено од стране неколико аутора [1], [2], [3], [4]. Зато се поставило логично питање да ли је
могуће остварити релативно добру изолацију дела радног простора при врло ниским, ниским и
средњим оптерећењима а аутоматски смањити ниво изолације при високим оптерћењима и на
номиналном радном режиму, са циљем добијања оптималних излазних параметара мотора у целом
радном подручју мотора.

the evaluation of heat release rate and combustion analysis on

the cylinder walls omitted in original approach. Therefore, the
complete heat released by fuel combustion was considered. The
accuracy of the method was also analyzed and it is shown that
errors caused by the simplifications in the model were very
small. In order to demonstrate the method it was applied for the
heat release analysis of tested diesel engine fuelled by standard
mineral diesel fuel and pure biodiesel fuel. Combustion
characteristics of two applied fuels were analysed and compared.

AB  - An appropriate type of dilution tunnel is chosen, based on the international
standards, user's needs and the manufacturer’s requirements. During the
design process, a number of restrictions specified in the standards for
emission and Venturis were taken into account. The data required to
address basic concepts were obtained from numerous emission tests
performed at the IMR Institute. A short algorithm of calculation of the
critical flow Venturi (CFV) is also presented. Specific attention is paid to
the problems of the measurement of particulate emissions using the
dilution method, which does not allow us to use the unique thermodynamic
and flow parameters. A method of evaluation of particulate emissions for
two extreme cases which were expected during the tests was adopted.
Using the results of calculations, a full flow dilution tunnel with CFV was
manufactured and tested at the IMR Institute.

AB  - Biodiesel is one of the promising renewable, alternative, and environmentally
friendly biofuels that can be used in Diesel engine with little or no modification
in the engine. The present paper investigates the combustion characteristics of single cylinder, naturally aspirated, air cooled, Diesel engine fueled with pure (100%) methyl ester of rapeseed oil, comparing to the corresponding characteristics when it was driven by diesel fuel. Combustion process analysis for both fuels was done at constant engine speed and at two load levels corresponding to the mean effective pressure of three and six bar. It was also concluded that the test engine can operate without problems, both with that fuel and with a lot of other biofuels and their mixtures that were used during long laboratory research.

AB  - Transport is responsible for around a quarter of World greenhouse gas emissions making it the
second biggest greenhouse gas emitting sector after industry. Road transport alone contributes about onefifth of the EU's total emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2). While emissions from other sectors are
generally falling, those from transport have continued to increase until 2008 when transport emissions
started to decrease on the back of oil prices, increased efficiency of passenger cars and slower growth in
mobility. The paper presents the information on EU measures to reduce fuel consumption, as well as CO2
emissions from road transport introducing limits for CO2 emission from passenger cars, vans and heavy
duty trucks. These limits follow ACEA voluntary agreement on fuel consumption reduction and define
the targets for CO2 emission in the year 2015 and 2020.

AB  - Very important literary source for the study of work processes in the engine cylinders, for decades, has been an article by
Günter Hohenberg "Definition und Eigenschaften des termodinamischen Verlust-winkels von Kolbenmaschinen", published
in 1976 in the magazine Automobil Industrie, Edition 4. This article theoretically and practically (experimentally) deals with
the topic of determining the angle of thermodynamic losses on the pressure curve without combustion measured in the engine
cylinder. The special value of this research is in the experimental results obtained by averaging the measured data on a large
number of different engines. It has been shown that these experimental results are useful for a quick, but quite accurate,
determining of the angle of thermodynamic losses on the pressure curve without combustion, with any engine. Diagrams
proposed by Hohenberg are used today, whether they are applied directly or used for comparison with the results of some of
the more modern computational methods based on thermodynamic analysis of the processes in the engine cylinder. However,
the theoretical approach by Hohenberg to the given problem through the equations he set, gives a pretty good idea of the most
influential factors on the size of the angle of thermodynamic losses, but it has a lot of mistakes and rough approximations.
This work is dedicated to the good and bad sides of this very important literature source through a comparison with one of the
modern thermodynamic methods related to the issue of determining the angle of thermodynamic losses

AB  - Na osnovu međunarodnih standarda, potreba korisnika i zahteva proizvođača realizovan je tunel za razređenje izduvnih gasova. Pri konstruisanju tunela uzet je u obzir niz ograničenja definisanih u standardima o kontroli emisije i izboru venturija. Potrebni podaci pri definisanju osnovnog koncepta tunela dobijeni su iz brojnih ispitivanja emisije obavljenih u Institutu IMR. U radu je takođe prikazan i kraći postupak proračuna dimenzija venturija kritičnog strujanja. Posebna pažnja je posvećena merenju emisije čestica koristeći metodu razređenja izduvnog gasa, što ne dozvoljava korišćenje jednostavnih termodinamičkih i strujnih parametara. Usvojen je metod određivanja emisije čestica za dva krajnja slučaja koja se mogu pojaviti tokom ispitivanja. Koristeći rezulate proračuna konstruisan je i izrađen tunel za razblaženje punog protoka sa venturijem kritičnog strujanja koji je zatim ispitan u Institutu IMR.
AB  - An appropriate type of dilution tunnel is chosen, based on the international standards, user's needs and the manufacturer's requirements. During the design process, a number of restrictions specified in the standards for emission and Venturis were taken into account. The data required to address basic concepts were obtained from numerous emission tests performed at the IMR Institute. A short algorithm of calculation of the critical flow Venturi (CFV) is also presented. Specific attention is paid to the problems of the measurement of particulate emissions using the dilution method, which does not allow us to use the unique thermodynamic and flow parameters. A method of evaluation of particulate emissions for two extreme cases which were expected during the tests was adopted. Using the results of calculations, a full flow dilution tunnel with CFV was manufactured and tested at the IMR Institute.

AB  - U ovom radu je proucavana mogucnost primene alternativnih biogoriva za
pogon dizel motora sa direktnim ubrizgavanjem, kao i uticaj ovih goriva na proces
sagorevanja i izduvnu emisiju ovog tipa motora. Kao alternativna biogoriva korišceni su
metilestri ulja uljane repice, sojinog ulja i otpadnog jestivog palminog ulja. Ova
biogoriva su korišcena kao cista (100%) ili u smeši sa standardnim dizel gorivom
fosilnog porekla u odnosu 50:50 i u nekim uslovima i u smeši 25%, 50%, 75%. Takode,
istražena je i mogucnost primene cistog jestivog rafinisanog suncokretovog ulja bez
dodatne obrade ulja pre mešanja sa dizel gorivom u odnosu 50:50.
Pored integralnih karakteristika motora: snage, obrtnog momenta, potrošnje
usisnog vazduha i goriva, analize izduvnih gasova, protoka recirkulacije izduvnih
gasova, snimljeni su tokovi pritiska u cilindru motora i vodu visokog pritiska sistema
unrizgavanja i izdizanje igle brizgaca, korišcenjem akvizicionog sistema visokih
performansi. Na bazi ovih velicina razvijen je i primenjen model za odredivanje
parametara procesa sagorevanja. Koristeci ovaj postupak odredene su sledece
karakteristike sagorevanja pri radu sa razlicitim biogorivima i pri razlicitim uslovima:
vrednosti maksimalnog pritiska u cilindru motora kao i njihovi položaji u odnosu na
SMT, zakoni oslobadanja toplote, periodi zakašnjenja upaljenja, trajanje sagorevanja i
razvijene kolicine energije po fazama procesa sagorevanja. Takode je izvršeno
ispitivanje uticaja svih korišcenih biogoriva na izduvnu emisiju motora.
Istraživanja su vršena u usisnoj i natpunjenoj varijanti motora. Takode je
detaljno istražen i uticaj recirkulacije izduvnih gasova na proces sagorevanja i izduvnu
emisiju i to u obe varijante motora i sa svim korišcenim biogorivima. Poseban deo
istraživanja se odnosio na mogucnost aplikacije komore za sagorevanje originalne konstrukcije sa smanjenim odavanjem toplote i uticaj ovog sistema sagorevanja na tok
procesa sagorevanja i sastav izduvnih gasova.
Dobijeni rezultati u okviru ovog rada se mogu koristiti pri optimizaciji radnog
ciklusa dizel motora sa direktnim ubrizgavanjem u cilju postizanja povoljnije
ekonomicnosti i izduvne emisije, pri pogonu biogorivima sa i bez recirkulacije izduvnih
gasova.
AB  - This dissertation presents the results of biofuels application research in direct
injection diesel engine, as well as the influence of these fuels on engine combustion
process and exhaust emissions. The methyl esters of rape oil, soya oil, and waste
cooking palm oil were used as alternative fuels. These biofuels were used as net fuels
(100%) as well as mixed with standard diesel fuel in the ratio 50:50 and in several cases
7%, 25%, 50% and 75%. Also, the research included the experiments with pure edible
sunflower oil mixed with diesel fuel in the ratio 50:50.
Besides engine integral characteristic: power and torque output, intake air and
fuel consumption, exhaust gas analysis, exhaust gases recirculation, the traces of incylinder
pressure, fuel injection pressure and injector needle lift were recorded using
high speed data acquisition system. On the basis of these data the method of combustion
process parameters evaluation was developed and applied. Using this procedure for
different biofuels and at different operating conditions, the following combustion
parameters were determined: maximum cylinder pressure and temperature and its their
position relative to TDC, heat release and the rate of heat release, ignition delay,
combustion duration and the amount of heat released in certain periods of combustion
process.
The research was carried out under the naturally aspirated and supercharged
engine conditions. The impact of exhaust gas recirculation on combustion process and
exhaust emissions was studied in all operating conditions and with all biofuels. A
special part of the research related to the possibilities of application of the specially designed combustion chamber with reduced heat transfer from the gases to the chamber
walls. The influence of this system on combustion characteristics and exhaust
emissions was studied.
The results obtained in this research can be used for optimisation of diesel
engine working cycle in order to achieve better fuel economy and exhaust emissions,
under the conditions of different biofuels application with and without exhaust gas
recirculation.
