AB - Here, the transfer matrix method along with the Bloch theorem are employed to study the frequency spectra in various cases of Timoshenko’s beam periodicity, such as structural, material and boundary periodicity. We additionally compare the location and size of band gaps, and the shape of the band structure in general for different types of foundation layers and relevant parameter values.

AB - In this paper we will investigate non-reciprocal wave propagation in Timoshenko beams,
due to space and time modulation of its elastic properties. To that end, an analytical approach
is used: the Bloch theorem is applied when choosing the solution form for displacement
components and the angle of rotation, which figure in the equations of motion along with the
elastic properties. Also, the Fourier expansion is used to express the periodic nature of the
modulation. By solving the eigenvalue problem for different modulation parameters, we obtain
the band diagrams which can be used to analyze the directionality of wave propagation. These
diagrams clearly represent the breakage of symmetry as a consequence of modulation. Thus, a
modulated beam behaves as a kind of metamaterial, in which one-way propagation of elastic
waves is possible. When shear and rotational effects are neglected, these results converge to
the results for the Euler-Bernoulli beam, which are already present in scientific literature.

AB - Wave attenuation, filtering and guiding is an ongoing topic of scientific
research, as there are many opportunities for improvement of existing
solutions in modern industry. One of the recent advancements has been made
with the use of non-reciprocal metamaterials.Certain properties of metamaterials
have made them suitable for use in various engineering fields. In this study,
we investigate non-reciprocal wave propagation behavior in coupled thin beams
phononics, due to time-modulation of material properties and axial loads. We
compare the results for the beams which are interconnected with Winkler’s
type of elastic layers and elastic or viscoelastic Pasternak layers. An analytic
approach is used to discover directional band gaps and investigate wave propagation
through these systems of beams, at relevant excitation frequencies. The
proposed framework can be exploited in further analysis of phononic systems
based on multiple beams coupled through different mediums and structural
elements modeled with higher-order beam theories.

AB - The human musculoskeletal system is comprised of various joints which are characterized by
their unique morphology and kinematics. The joint coordinate system is tailored to comply with
the observed mechanical properties of joints, making their research more intuitive and in
accordance with standard clinical terminology. This coordinate system allows for spatial orientation to be described by three sequence independent Euler angles (the so-called “jaw-pitch-roll” angles), which mirrors the sequence independency of the final position of human limbs. The knee joint is the most complex, both anatomically and mechanically. It can be modeled as a four link open kinematic chain to which the joint coordinate system is applied. This coordinate system is usually described in Denavit-Hartenberg parameters, and the rotation transformation matrix is obtained using standard methods of vector algebra. In this paper another approach is used to derive the rotation transformation matrix, namely, the Rodrigues’ rotation formula. The utility of this algorithm is evident: the Rodrigues’ method provides an elegant solution which is obtained in a concise and efficient manner.

AB - As stent technology moves forward, there’s a growing need for fast and accurate stent
deployment visualizations. To that end, the Finite Element Method was used for quasi-static
analysis of a balloon expandable stent. A model was created, which includes a stent, balloon,
artery and a plaque. In order to achieve faster computation, various approximations have been
included, especially considering the balloon, artery and plaque. Some non-linear problems are
assessed, like the contact between different parts of the model. Arterial tissue and plaque are
modeled as isotropic hyperelastic materials. The balloon was specially designed and discretized to avoid the computational difficulties during inflation. Thanks to the complexity of this model,
useful results can be obtained in a reasonable time frame. The software used for FEM analysis
was ABAQUS.

AB - In this paper we have analyzed the standard linear solid model (Zener model) of viscoelastic
materials. A one-dimensional analysis was executed analytically (in MATLAB) and numerically
(in ABAQUS), and corresponding graphs have been produced. The fractional differential form of
the Zener model was then implemented, as it has proven to be a better match for the experimental
test results for viscoelastic materials. Finally, all of the results were compared and discussed.

impaired become a part of modern forms of communication. In
this paper, we will present a hands-free device that is meant to be
wirelessly connected to a smartphone through an accompanying
app which will provide access to all forms of messengers and
enable the user to send, listen, respond to a text message, etc.
These many options have been made possible by combining the
movement of different fingers, without the need of any kind of
buttons or keyboards. The system is based on accelerometers and
Morse code. It's easy to use, discreet and it also provides privacy,
opposed to the voice input. So far, we have made a non-wireless
device and programmed and tested it in LabView and Matlab.
