Rolling Bearing Fault Detection in the Range of Ultrasound

AB  - Acoustic signals have been used widely to detect the integrity of metal parts and the soundness of their contact. Diverse methods are developed to evaluate the actual quality of metal-to-metal contact having a lubricating layer. These methods are sensitive to the sound waves resulting from the sliding and rolling contact of the adjacent items. The ongoing research and operational experience created an effective and reliable method for acoustic detection of rolling bearing damage. Sound waves are detected by an appropriate transducer (sensor). The signal is processed, and the resulting root-mean-square (RMS) voltage is tracked. An increase in the voltage level indicates deterioration in bearing conditions. In practice, however, such an application almost always involves several considerations, including a significant amount of interfering background noises, unacceptable sound wave attenuations, and inaccessibility of the desired sensor locations.

AB  - This paper presents the continuation of the research by the authors on the topics of vibration analysis. Namely, a tapered cantilever beam has been studied in theoretical and experimental terms. The beam is 3D printed using the FDM technique of PLA material with two characteristics patterns, linear layered and the two-dimensional periodic structure. The former of the two is conducted to tensile test in order to determine elasticity modulus, so the computations of natural frequencies could be conducted. The experimental part of the research, in terms of natural frequency, is conducted on six specimens with various eccentricities. The angular frequencies of one representative sample, obtained by analytical computations and experimental measurement are compared.

AB  - The reliable operation of a mechanical system is dependent on the condition of installed rolling bearings. This paper presents a measuring system and equipment for analyzing the condition of rolling bearings. The developed system is a modular device (VibroLog) for measuring several diagnostic parameters for bearings, including vibration, number of revolutions, temperature and sound pressure. The device is a data collector and analyzer. Software in the Java programming language for the analysis and presentation of data obtained by VibroLog has also been developed. This paper is concerned with the development of a mathematical model for the evaluation and prediction of the qualitative state of rolling bearings in real operating conditions. It also presents results of measurement and mathematical modelling of the results. The model was formed by non-linear regression analysis as one of the most widely used statistical techniques. The analysis of the experimental data showed that the rate of change of a variable is proportional to its actual value. The model was tested on several rolling bearings having different degrees of damage. The developed model makes it possible to evaluate and predict the condition of the bearing by measuring the sound pressure level, which is simpler than vibration measurement in real operating conditions. During testing, the model generated results within the prediction error limits. The developed vibrodiagnostic system and the created model enable condition assessment and prediction for a wide range of rolling bearings.

AB  - One of the critical characteristics of machine plants is safety at work. Safety
barriers are one of the measures to reduce risk at work. Barriers are often used when
controlling access to zones of increased danger is necessary. The type of protection
depends on the type of industrial plant, risk assessment, and applicable regulations. To
achieve the desired functionality, proper application and complete integration of the
protection system into an existing management system are necessary. The paper
shows the structural solution of the protection system in the printing plant of the “Tetra
Pak” company from Gornji Milanovac. The main requirement is to provide entry to the
protected zone only after the entry request has been sent and processed. Another
requirement is to stop the plant in a predefined position. To meet the requirements, it is
necessary to determine the required SIL (System Integrity Level) from the reference
standard and determine the electronic components properly. In addition, complete
knowledge of all processes and cycles of the production line is necessary. Safety
electrical components were used to implement the project: Safety PLC,
Electromagnetic Safety Locks with Call buttons, Emergency-Stop buttons, and
optoelectronic and inductive sensors.

AB  - Main task of this paper was to design a model which would find incongruence in educational process of capable EFMNS certified engineer. Through designed model, scoreboard matrix tables of incongruence of elements were defined. Also, the model represents contenting elements by value of incongruence and impact. Flexible model was observed in variation of changed congruence of specific element and gap analysis of element itself. Educational process was analysed as a system with several levels of output with main researched output in the lowest level-maintenance engineer able to achieve EFMNS certificate. GAP analysis was set as the method suitable for comparing different approaches, styles and set of educational courses provided in the various educational processes. As a base of the model, Nadler Tushman Congruence model was used and modified for better serving the practice. Base model was analysed in order to best use pros and to avoid main cons of the model. Main goal of the paper was to set appropriate model for comparing different elements of the educational process in order to discover their influence and incongruence with the process. The model designed in this paper provides a strong basis in the future gap analysis of educational process and elements of system. Also, the discovered model could be used in analysis of various processes under stated requirements. As a result of this research and analysis, lists of particular educational courses were defined, both for BSc and MSc levels of studying, which can be used both as a standalone or addition to existing educational program. Analysis of defined lists and their impacts on other elements of educational process itself provided several major conclusions which provide constant development of educational process.

AB  - Main task of this paper is to present idea of selfmaintaining and make corresponding concept of selfmaintaining vehicles. Through setting parameters of selfmaintaining and providing algorithm of selfmaintenance in vehicles author made attempt to set basic principles in this area of research. Paper presents researched suitability of different drive-trains of vehicles for selfmaintaining. Also, convenient artificial intelligence model for selfmaintaining was reviewed and discussed. Paper discuss near future and future development of maintenance of the vehicles according to presence of mechanical and electrical components. Conclusions made in this papers describes possible ways of future development of maintenance.

AB  - Behavior of structures under various load types is determined by their deformation characteristics, global deformation characteristics - deflections and rotations, and local deformation characteristics - strains / stresses in structure base material. If we know global and local deformation characteristics of a structure, then it is possible to determine the structure behavior under acting loads, on the whole structure or at some part of that structure. The main objective of this research is to verify calculation algorithm for obtaining vertical displacements - the deflection of the structure, based on the known strain values in the structure base material, under acting load. The verification of the calculation algorithm is performed by comparing the numerical and experimental results.

AB  - 3D modeliranje u SolidWorks-u se predaje na Mašinskom fakultetu Univerziteta u Beogradu (Srbija) više od jedne decenije. Kao i svaka nova veština koju treba savladati, softverski paket SolidWorks zahteva dobro prilagođenu metodologiju podučavanja. Najbolji mogući način podučavanja bio bi individualni mentorski rad. Jedan profesor po studentu, koji bi bio apsolutno fokusiran na završetak zadatka studenta, i pružio najbolje rezultate . Nažalost, zbog nedostatka nastavnog osoblja i velikog broja studenata, ovaj pristup nije moguć. Umesto toga, jedan profesor bi predstavio zadatak iz 3D modeliranja grupi od 80 studenata. Oni bi pratili celokupnu prezentaciju i tek kada se završi celokupna prezentacija, studenti bi se podelili u četiri učionice sa po 20 računara i vežbali predstavljene zadatke. Tokom poslednje decenije primećeno je nekoliko velikih problema u ovim nastavnim metodama. Primenjen je novi pristup nastavi. Ovaj rad predstavlja novu metodologiju nastave i postignute rezultate u poboljšanju nastavnog procesa.
AB  - More than one decade 3D modeling in SolidWorks is taught at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Belgrade (Serbia). As every new skill that has to be mastered, SolidWorks software package demands well-tailored teaching methodology. The best possible way of teaching would be one-on-one tutoring. One teacher per student, who would be absolutely focused on student's task completion, would provide the best results. Unfortunately, due to the lack of teaching staff and vast number of students this approach isn't possible. Instead, one teacher would present the 3D modeling task of interest on the video presenter to a group of 80 students. They would follow the whole presentation and only when the whole presentation ends, students would split into four classrooms with 20 computers each, and practice the presented tasks. During the last decade few major problems in these teaching methods were recognized. A new teaching approach was implemented. This paper presents a novel teaching methodology and achieved results in the teaching process improvement.

Structural Integrity Assessment by Using Cross-Correlated Modal Identification

AB  - Early researches on steel structures integrity were mainly oriented on calculations and conventional experiments. Robust numerical methods of a high accuracy are usually less reliable in estimation of dynamic properties and a true condition of a steel structure. On the other hand, experiments on real structures, being in regular operation, could be very demanding to conduct. Therefore, the implementation and justification of novel methodology in structural integrity analysis is presented here. The main idea is to correlate experimental results with those obtained applying ANSYS software package. Throughout a results cross-correlation and model adjustment the new presentation of the structure is created, involving natural frequency, modal mass, stiffness and damping. By a proper definition of those parameters, and a 3D model of the structure, a preliminary map of measuring points and measuring configuration are set in order to enable structural integrity assessment. Example of application of this procedure is given.

AB  - Plain bearings have wide application in heavy mechanical engineering like mills, turbines, crushers, rolling mills and forging machines, presses and similar. Early detection of plain bearing failures is necessary in terms of systems maintenance and reliability as well as from the aspect of economy and protection of these production facilities. Failure and damage of plain bearings are most commonly manifested as wear, tear and plastic deformation of the material. Fracture and plastic deformation are damages related to strength, while wear, with all their manifestations, is associated with tribological processes. The research in this paper has shown that, in a reliable way, these problems can be detected at the very stage of their formation by vibration analysis and thermal analysis of bearing condition. This paper presents a part of the research done in the
Laboratory for Applied Mechanics and Constructions at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in East Sarajevo. In this paper, the selection of plain bearing failures was performed, diagnostic models whose reliability was investigated in above mentioned Laboratory as well as on real industrial machines during their expulsion were developed.

AB  - Food processing industry is moving forward to a full automation of all processes, especially in technological line segments which represent critical control points of food safety. One of these points is color sorting by using machine vision, where inappropriate products are removed. Most important product appearance attributes are color and texture. During food processing, the product is captured by optical devices, mostly color cameras and lasers. The aim of this paper is to investigate new eligibility criteria for digital image segmentation by using only image from the camera. The goal is to describe the texture of the product, based on chosen mathematical measures, and to allow for recognition and then classification according to the predefined range of values in an appropriate class. Images of frozen raspberry were used. Image analysis of color parameters in RGB color space and statistical tests to examine normality of data were carried out. Thereafter, one-way Anova and correlation analysis was performed. Statistically significant difference was found for the values of two indicators: entropy and new criteria were derived from standard deviation, as well as mean values of pixels for every channel, and marked as L. After determining the range of these criteria, a new algorithm was developed for image segmentation written in Matlab. One of the results of applying this algorithm is that more than 80% of good products were recognized.

AB  - Merne trake su osnovni alat koji se koristi za merenje naprezanja materijala. U industriji se primenjuju već više od sedamdeset godina. Oblast primene mernih traka je veoma široka. Koriste se za merenja naprezanja mašinskih i građevinskih konstrukcija, pojedinačnih mašinskih delova, uređaja i pomagala u medicini itd. Merne trake se izrađuju od različitih materijala, u različitim oblicima i dimenzijama. I pored široke zastupljenosti, primana mernih traka može biti otežana u određenim vremenskim uslovima. Niska temperatura i povećana vlažnost vazduha veoma nepovoljno utiču na materijale pomoću kojih se merne trake postavljaju na površinu dela kaji se ispituje. Da bi se prevazišli navedeni problemi koriste se deformetri. U radu je ispitana mogućnost primene specijalno dizajniranog deformetra u obliku slova omega (Ω). Ispitivanja su izvedena u laboratorijskim uslovima, na prostoj gredi, pri dejstvu dinamičkih opterećenja. Glavni cilj ispitivanja bio je utvrđivanje stepena korelacije rezultata dobijenih direktnim očitavanjem sa mernih traka i rezultata očitanih sa deformetra. Analiza rezultata uporednih ispitivanja pokazala su visok stepen korelacije čime je potvrđena mogućnost primene 'Omega' deformetra na konstrukcijama koje su izložene dinamičkom opterećenju. .
AB  - Strain gauge is a basic tool used to measure the stress of the material. In industry, it has been in use for more than seventy years. The area of application of the strain gauges is very wide. They are used to measure the stress of mechanical and building constructions, individual machine parts, devices and aids in medicine, etc. Straing gauges are made of different materials, in different shapes and dimensions. In spite of the wide presence, the aplication of the straing gauges can be difficult in certain weather conditions. Low temperature and high humidity significantly negativly affect the materials used for placing the gagues on the surface of the part to be tested. In order to overcome these problems, deformeters are used. This study examines the possibility of using a specially designed deformeters in the form of a letter omega (Ω). Tests were carried out in laboratory conditions, on a freebeam, under the action of dynamic loads. The main objective of the test was to determine the degree of correlation between the results obtained by direct reading from the strain gauge and the results read by the deformeter. The analysis of the results of comparative tests showed a high degree of correlation, which confirmed the possibility of using 'Omega' deformeter on the structures that are exposed to dynamic load.

AB  - Since the late thirties of the former century, Strain gauge is a renowned device for the stress-strain measurements on a different kinds of structures. There is a great variety of Strain gauges on the market and despite that fact, usually some specific application requires a unique solution. Far the most frequently, such cases are related to Strain gauge mounting on coarse, hardly accessible or inaccessible surfaces. Methodology proposed by this paper involves a deformeter, actually a pre-formed resilient piece of metal with attached Strain gauge. Commercially, various types of deformeters are available on the market. They are described in the available literature. Usually a minimal span of such deformeter is 50mm or greater. Therefore for a shorter span a dedicated deformeter must be developed. In order to design a multipurpose, widely applicable linear deformeter, with adaptable span, a new concept of Ω form is explored. This paper describes a research and development effort, invested into creation of a new type of deformeter. The design process started with 3D modelling of different Ω forms. Among several drafted shapes an optimal form is selected. Based on a 3D modelling outcome, a prototype of a spring strip is shaped and thermally treated. After that, Strain gauges are bonded to Ω deformeter and the model is justified in the Lab conditions. A very high degree of compliance is achieved with the invented solution, providing operation in a wide stretching range (0-5 mm) including prominent stability under different ambient conditions.

AB  - The paper describes development of a novel orbiting mechanism. Target design is a shaking mechanism with a planar figure eight closed loop. Shaking dynamics depends on a cycling frequency as well on a reciprocating displacement. These two parameters are in the focus of preliminary design and analysis. Computational optimization and path definition were interrelated to core engineering work. Crucial novelty is an orbital motion created by a coupled slider crank mechanism. An academic package of the Solid Works Motion 2010 was employed for parts and assembly design, as well as for the subsequent mechanism analysis. The outcome design proved itself in operation with a smooth shaking motion over a closed loop and even more the uniformly distributed acceleration peaks within each cycle.

AB  - This paper explains the basic principles on which the walker
mechanism for the rehabilitation of injured people is functioning. This
paper presents the mechanism geometry, kinematics of its work as
well as the appropriate model and simulation obtained by the
software package SolidWorks. This work can be applied to the design
of medical devices for the rehabilitation of persons with injured
spine, paraplegics or those who have difficulties in walking due to
cerebral apoplexy.

AB  - This paper discloses the synthesis and fundamental kinematic analysis of mechanically established walking and standing mechanism, as well as the design and motion simulation of mechanical walker 3D model. Results of this simulation are exposed in various kinematic diagrams by which the operation characteristics of the mechanism and the walking ability of the proposed mechanical walker can be discussed and evaluated. Practical application of this mechanical walker covers the fields of walking rehabilitation and training in the treatment of spinal cord injured patients, as well as for standing and walking assistance of elderly and disabled people.

AB  - Svi ležajevi, ispravni ili oštećeni, novi ili korišćeni, u radu generišu odreĎeni nivo ultrazvuka, kao posledicu kontakta kotrljajnih elemenata i kotrljajnih staza. Degradacije maziva i pojava prvih znakova zamora materijala ležaja dovodi do povećanja trenja u ležaju a samim tim i viši nivo akustičke emisije ležaja. U doktorskoj disertaciji postavljena je originalna metodologija detekcije oštećenja kotrljajnih ležajeva u ultrazvučnom domenu. Razvijen je primenjiv model i prototipsko rešenje elektronskog bloka za kondicioniranje izvornih signala. Formulacija kriterijuma kvaliteta izvedena je na jednostavan način što govori o suštinskom sagledavanju i diferenciranju disipirane energije usled nastalog oštećenja, kako u ranoj tako i u odmakloj pojavnoj fazi. Detekcija oštećenja ležaja u ultrazvučnom domenu je metoda nadzora ležaja koja se razlikuje od tradicionalnih dijagnostičkih metoda. Ovom metodom analizira se visokofrekventni deo spektra, frekvencije u opsegu 100 kHz - 500 kHz. Senzori koji se koriste osetljivi su na metalni kontakt koji se pojavljuje pri prelasku kotrljajnog elementa preko kotrljajne staze bez prisustva dovoljnog sloja maziva. U tom slučaju, senzor na izlazu emituje visokofrekventni pulsirajući signal. Razvojem nove metode detekcije oštećenja kotrljajnih ležajeva stvaraju se uslovi za precizniju procenu stanja ležaja ultrazvučnom dijagnostikom. Time se unapreĎuje i pojednostavljuje tehnologija održavanja rotacione opreme, što smanjuje postojeće troškove usled zastoja i omogućuje pravovremenu intervenciju. Time se ujedno i povećava pouzdanost rada ključnih energetskih sistema termo-elektrana, toplana, vodovodne infrastrukture i drugih energetskih postrojenja u rafinerijama i procesnoj industriji.
AB  - All bearings, operational or damaged, new or used, generate a certain level of ultrasound during work, as a result of contact of rolling elements and the rolling slopes. Lubricant degradation and appearance of the first signs of bearing fatigue lead to increased friction in the bearing and therefore a higher level of acoustic emission. In doctoral dissertation, an original methodology for roller bearings damage detection in ultrasonic domain is established. The applicable model and the electronic block prototype solution for conditioning the source signals are developed. The quality criteria is formulated in a simple way, which shows the substantial comprehending and diversifying of the dissipated energy due to damage, incurred both in early and in advanced stage of manifestation. Bearing damage detection in ultrasonic domain is the method of bearing inspection that differs from traditional diagnostic methods. This method analyzes the high-frequency part of the spectrum, the frequencies in the range of 100 kHz - 500 kHz. The used sensors are sensitive to the metal contact that occurs during rolling element passage through the rolling slopes in the absence of sufficient lubricant layer thickness. In this case, the sensor emits a high-frequency output of the pulsing signal. By the development of the new methods for the detection of the ball bearing defects, the conditions for a more precise ultrasound assessment of bearing conditions are created. This improves and simplifies maintenance technology of rotary equipment, reducing the current costs due to the stoppage and allows timely intervention. This also increases the working reliability of the key energetic systems of the thermal power plants, heating plants, water infrastructure and other power plants in refineries and process industries

AB  - A Portable Data Logger (PDL) is the target instrument to be designed. Its internal architecture is
conceived upon an originally developed acquisition card connected to an advanced touch screen
panel. This concept of multichannel analyzer incorporates a set of four accelerometer input lines, as
well as four common analog inputs (4-20 mA or 0-10V). A vast selection of assorted signal analysis
functions is available with this device. Market review on a multifunctional multichannel signal
analyzer shows a lack of such equipment in the range of powerful jet affordable devices. This paper
describes a pure engineering attempt to develop a novel vibro-diagnostic instrument, consisting of
conventional modules but aimed for demanding technical applications. The PDL is designed to
monitor a cluster of accelerometer signals, in order to determine: vibration severity (RMS value of
vibration velocity), peak tones of the spectrum (FFT), time graph of signal trends, also to display and
exchange data via conventional communication ports and protocols.
Concept of a novice portable data logger is based upon idea of composing a dedicated acquisition
card with sophisticated touch screen HMI.

AB  - Jedan od standardom propisanih postupaka u remontu turbogeneratorskih postrojenja je i modalna analiza lopatica. Problem se javlja kada su u pitanju minijaturne lopatice uvodnih stepeni, gde standardna oprema ne može da se primeni zbog dimenzione inkompatibilnosti. U tom slučaju postoje dva moguća rešenja: jedno je nabavka nove, skupocene i namenske aparature, a drugo izrada odgovarajućih adaptera i prilagođenja za standardnu opremu. Prilikom modalne inspekcije rotora parne turbine (P = 60 MW) na lokaciji TE Kolubara - A korišćeni su klasični instrumenti za spektralnu analizu oplemenjeni odgovarajućim originalno izvedenim adapterom za merenje na minijaturnim lopaticama. Opis samog adaptera i postupka analize detaljnije su izloženi u radu.
AB  - One of the standard prescribed overhaul procedures for turbo-generator plants is the modal analysis of blades. A problem occurs with the miniature blades of introductory levels, where standard equipment cannot be used due to dimensional incompatibility. In that case there are two possible solutions. One is to purchase new, expensive and specific purpose apparatus, and another is to make adapters and adjustments to the standard equipment. During the modal inspection of the steam turbine's rotor (P = 60 MW) on the location of the thermal power plant Kolubara - A, the conventional instruments for spectral analysis were used, but with an originally made adapter for measuring on the miniature blades. The description of the adapter and analysis procedure are given in detail.

AB  - Niz masivnih i glomaznih rotora predstavlja ozbiljan tehnički izazov za kvalitetno i bezbedno uravnotežavanje. Jedna od opcija je da se nakon kapitalnog servisa rotori parnih Hi gasnih turbina odnosno generatora transportuju u neki dobro opremljen regionalni centar i da se onda tu po propisanoj proceduri uravnoteže. Druga varijanta je da se iskoristi prenosna masina za uravnotežavanje i da se glomazni rotori uravnoteže na samoj lokaciji. Često je mnogo jednostavnije i isplativije doneti i kompletirati balans-masinu na objekt, nego pripremiti i osigurati transport velikih rotora. Prvi put primenom domaće opreme (balans-mašina firme RoTech) izvedeno je uspešno uravnotežavanje diskova parne turbine iz sistema TENT A i uravnotežavanje ventilatorskih kola dimnih gasova iz sistema TENT - B. U radu su predstavljeni osnovni aspekti ovakvog postupka uravnotežavanja sa karakterističnim detaljima tokom realizacije.
AB  - A series of massive and huge rotors represents a big technical challenge for high quality and safe balancing. One of the options is that after the general overhaul, the rotors of steam or gas turbines or generators should be transported to a well-equipped regional center and balanced according to the prescribed procedure. The other option is to use a portable balancing machine and balance huge rotors on their locations. It is often simpler and more economic to bring a portable balancing machine than to prepare and ensure the transport of huge rotors. For the first time the discs of the steam turbine of TENT - A system and ventilation circuits of flue gases of TENT - В system were balanced by using the domestic equipment (balancing machine of the company RoTech). The basic aspects and characteristic details of this balancing procedure are presented in this paper.

AB  - Ovaj rad analizira konstruktivno grafičku stabilnost postupaka preslikavanja u opštim i perspektivno kolinearnim poljima koja se zasnivaju na Lagerovim tačkama preslikanih apsolutnih involucija. Za ovaj metod preslikavanja određene su zone slabe uslovljenosti i odgovarajuće zone nestabilnosti a, sa ciljem korekcije, predloženi su i neki alternativni postupci preslikavanja. Kao rezultat ove analize, kreiran je i objašnjen stabilan i dobro uslovljen metod preslikavanja koji se može iskoristiti za izgradnju softverskih algoritama projektivnih transformacija. Izložena analiza ne predstavlja samo doprinos teoriji kompjuterske i projektivne geometrije, već omogućava da procedure preslikavanja u softverskim modelima opšte i perspektivne kolineacije postanu tačnije i delotvornije.
AB  - This paper considers and analyzes the constructive-graphical stability of the mapping methods in the general collinear fields based on Laguerre's points of the absolute involution mapped. The ill-conditioned and corresponding unstable zones for this mapping method are defined and some alternative procedures for their correction are proposed. As the result of this analysis, the stabile and well-conditioned general collineation mapping methods, which can be used in the design of the projective transformations software algorithms, are created and explained. The exposed analysis is a contribution to the theory of computational and projective geometry moreover, it makes the mapping procedures in software models of general and perspective collinear fields more accurate and effective.
