AB - Within the “LifelineMDD” project, co-financed by the EU through the Interreg
Danube Transnational Programme, in the WP3 package, coordinated by WWF
Adria-Serbia, an educational program is being developed to impart knowledge
and skills to members of the local community on the importance of nature
conservation and ecological connectivity in the Five-country Biosphere Reserve
Mura-Drava-Danube. The program was based on knowledge from research and
scientific studies on biotic indicator species of birds and fish, abiotic factors of
sediment transport and climate change, cooperation of various stakeholders and
pilot studies of restoration carried out within the same project under the different
packages. The results of the WP3 included: the development of didactic materials
for trainings, including a uniform educational manual with practical activities at
the level of all five biosphere reserve countries (Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary
and Serbia) included in the project, and organization of trainings for national
trainers and local educators. The aim of trainings was to develop and improve the
knowledge and competencies of participants for the use of various digital tools
and interactive techniques and learning methods in nature, and to empower them
to independently implement activities from the four areas that are the focus of
the project. The educational training in Serbia, named “Be a knowledge receiver on
a free-flowing river” was implemented in the Bačko Podunavlje Biosphere reserve
(Sombor, Bački Monoštor, Bezdan) during March, April and May, 2022. The training
was attended by 21 participants who live and/or work within the protected area
itself or in its immediate vicinity. The training participants were teachers, nature
conservationist, professional workers in protected areas, tourist guides, youth workers as well as other individuals who teach on importance of environmental
protection and actively contribute to the promotion of nature conservation, and
play an important role in developing environmental awareness among children
and young people. During the training, more than 40 activities from the Manual
“Local Communities for Living Rivers” were implemented, which is the key to the
successful implementation of an educational program in nature and which is
adapted to work with different age categories of participants. A special focus
was placed on activities for people with developmental disabilities, with the aim
of as effective inclusion as possible. The implementation of the training created
a solid network of national trainers and local educators who have an important
role in the management, preservation, interpretation and promotion of biosphere
reserves. Such a dynamic educational program aimed at protecting nature, with
a large number of practical activities and with different profiles of participants,
represents an effective work model for learning and developing the awareness
of all generations of the local population about the importance of the MDD
transboundary biosphere reserve.
AB - U okviru projekta “LifelineMDD“, kojega sufinancira EU putem Interreg Danube
članovima lokalne zajednice o važnosti očuvanja prirode i ekološke povezanosti
u Petodržavnom rezervatu biosfere Mura-Drava-Dunav. Program je utemeljen na
rezultatima istraživanja i znanstvenih studija o biotičkim indikatorskim vrstama
ptica i riba, abiotičkim faktorima transporta sedimenta i klimatskih promjena,
Cilj ovih obuka
korištenje različitih digitalnih alata i interaktivnih tehnika i metoda učenja u prirodi
tijekom ožujka, travnja i svibnja, 2022. godine. Obuci je nazočilo 21 sudionik koji
živi i/ili radi unutar zaštićenog područja ili u njegovoj neposrednoj blizini. Sudionici
podučavaju druge o značaju zaštite okoliša i aktivno doprinose promociji očuvanja
interpretaciji i promociji rezervata biosfere.

Ograničeni uslovi ekološke niše u gornjem toku sprečavaju pojavu i razvoj ostalih vrsta prilagođenih niskom vodostaju i drugačijim ekološkim uslovima,
AB - The Gradašnica River is a smaller water stream which springs on the Ozren mountain and flows into the Moravica River. The upper stream passes through a wooden area with a stony bottom and alternating rapids and silent places. During the research period, the flow was weaker due to the long-term drought. Five species have been recorded in total. Species Gammarus balcanicus and Gerris lacustris dominate ie. subdominate in abundance, while other species are few and occasionally present. The limited conditions of the ecological niche in the upper stream overslaugh the appearance and development of other species adapted to low water levels and different ecological conditions.

AB - Abstract: In this paper an overview of CO2emissions from the useof biomass of fast-growing plant miscanthus are given. The aim was to analyze and calculate a carbon footprint of all operations in the life cycle of miscathus like: preparation for rhizomes planting (application ofherbicides, plowing and harrowing on unused agricultural land), planting, fertilization of young plants, irrigation, mowing of plants, baling, transport to the nearest briquetting machine where briquettes are produced or to the nearest pyrolytic plant where pyrolytic diesel is produced. Emissions of CO2are taken from previously performed analysis and re-calculated for 1t of miscanthus biomass. The results showed the dominant impact of the briquetting operation due to high electricity consumption (70 kWh) which is in Serbia produced mostly from non-renewable energy sources (about 72%, from coal and natural gas). In accordance with the complete abandonment of coal for energy production which became one of the main goals in the fight against climate change, a future scenario has been created. This scenario involved the production of electricity using only renewable energy sources (hydropower plants with the share of 22%, wind turbines with the share of 28%, solar panels with the share of 25% and heat pumps with the share of 25%). The results show drastic reductions of CO2 emissions, up to4,000 times in a case when renewable energy sources are used for electricity production compared to the current electricity mix used in Serbia. Nevertheless, despite high emissions of CO2from using electricity fromnon-renewable sources, it is concluded that miscantus is a more environmentally friendly solution for energy production than lignite briquettes and firewood that are normally used for the heating of households and that all measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gases emissions should be implemented to avoid catastrophic consequences on the climate and human health in Serbia.

AB - Two most common systems of forest biomass supply chains in Serbia are evaluated by using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach: 'cut-to-length' system with penduculate oak (CLO) on flat terrains with a tractor equipage, and 'tree-length' system with moesian beech (TLB) on more steep terrains, with a skidder. The main focus is put on the fuel consumption and its environmental impact on various stages of wood chips supply chain. Results indicate chipping as a most environmentally burdensome due to the low process productivity and high diesel combustion in outdated machines. CLO system exhibits lower environmental burden due to the 2%-35% lower impact in six out of eleven analysed impact categories compared to the TLB. The main reason is the skidding performed on a more steep terrain with a more powerful machine consuming more diesel than the tractor equipage. The higher impact of the felling operation in CLO system is caused by additional time for processing short oak assortments. The evaluated environmental impacts are consequence of the machinery old age used in Serbian forests. The application of a modern, energy efficient, combined machines such as harvesters and forwarders is recommended though it could have a lot of drawbacks.

AB - In this paper "well-to-pump" environmental analysis of pyrolytic diesel from Miscanthus gigantheus is performed. The average annual yield of Miscanthus from III-V year of cultivation on 1 ha of chernozem soil in Serbia (23.5 t) is considered as an input for the process. Two pyrolytic diesel pathways are considered: distributed pyrolytic pathway with external hydrogen production (from natural gas) and integrated pyrolytic pathway with internal hydrogen production (from pyrolytic oil). and are compared to a conventionally produced diesel pathway. The results of the analysis reveal that integrated-internal pyrolytic diesel pathway has lowest resources consumption and lowest pollutant emissions. Compared to conventionally produced diesel, integrated-internal pyrolysis pathway consumes 80% less of fossil fuels, and 92% more of renewables, has 90% lower global warming potential, 30% lower terrestrial acidification potential but 38% higher particulate matter formation potential. Compared to the distributed-external pathway, 88% less fossil fuels, and 36% less renewables are consumed in the integrated-internal pathway, global warming potential is 97% lower, terrestrial acidification is 20% lower, and particulate matter formation is 49% lower. Nevertheless, this pathway has high coal and hydroelectrical power consumption due to electricity production and high emissions of particulate matter, CO2, SOx, and N2O. Another drawback of this production pathway is the low yield of diesel obtained (38% lower than in distributed-external pathway). With this regard, it is still hard to designate production of diesel from fast pyrolysis of Miscanthus as a more environmentally friendly replacement of the conventional production diesel pathway.

AB - U ovom radu je izvršena sinteza šest estarskih derivata 2,6 dimetil4-supstituisane-1,4-dihidropiridin-3,5-dikarboksilne kiseline: dietil2,6-dimetil-4-fenil-1,4-dihidropiridin-3,5 dikarboksilata, dietil-2,6dimetil-4-(3'-nitrofenil)-1,4 dihidropiridin-3,5-dikarboksilata, dietil2,6-dimetil-4-(4' nitrofenil)-1,4-dihidropiridin-3,5-dikarboksilata, dietil-4-(2'-hidroksifenil)-2,6-dimetil-1,4-dihidropiridin-3,5dikarboksilata, dietil-4-(3'-hidroksifenil)-2,6-dimetil-1,4dihidropiridin-3,5-dikarboksilata i dietil-4-(4'-hidroksifenil)-2,6dimetil-1,4-dihidropiridin-3,5-dikarboksilata. AB - This paper investigates the environmental impacts and energy benefits of the cultivation of Miscanthus (Miscanthus x giganteus Greef et Deu.), in order to initiate its use in sustainable household heating in the Republic of Serbia. Based on the analysis of available data regarding the use of agricultural machinery in Serbia, a Miscanthus supply chain is constructed and examined in detail, scrutinizing all relevant operationsfrom planting of rhizomes to thermal energy production. Results of the life cycle assessment identify the briquetting process as the most environmentally burdensome operation due to high electricity consumption and low productivity. It is concluded that an average yield of 23.5 t dry matter (d.m.) year(-1) obtained from 1 ha of chernozem soil would have energy output:energy input (EO:EI) ratio of 51:1, and would release 365.5 gigajoules (GJ) of heat during combustion in a boiler. With this amount of energy, around 383 m(2) of a free-standing family house in Serbia can be heated annually. The same amount of energy is obtained by the combustion of 22 t of lignite or 23 t of wood logs. The substitution of lignite and wood with Miscanthus briquettes would lead to significant reduction of CO2 equivalents (eq), SO2 eq, P eq, N eq, 1,4 dichlorobenzene (1,4-DB) eq, Non-methane volatile organic compound (NMVOC), PM10 eq and U235 eq emissions. This designates Miscanthus as a more sustainable energy solution for household heating. In instances where more modern agricultural machinery is used, emission reduction is higher, except for CO2 eq due to higher emission factors predicted for more powerful engines. Depending on Miscanthus' annual yield, the replacement of set-aside land with Miscanthus plantations result in carbon (C) sequestration from 0.08 t C ha(-1) year(-1) to 0.91 t C ha(-1) year(-1). In a modern machinery scenario, C sequestration is only attainable when maximal Miscanthus yield is obtained. The combined use of machinery with different engine power is the best option for Miscanthus cultivation in Serbia.

AB - Photography – a simulation of the landscape – is often used to assess visual qualities of landscapes, silently implying there is consensus around what remains the best representation of a given landscape. In this study we examine if such a consensus in visually experiencing a landscape truly exists and what the main differences in visual perceptions of landscape are. To gather participant’s visual experiences, a participant generated image (PGI) method was used. Each participant took a photo, which he/she believed best represented the surrounding landscape and provided reasoning for their choice. With a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis three distinct perceptions were found. Each places different emphasis on land uses, locality and the concept of nature. The study shows the plurality of visual experiences of a landscape, suggesting caution when using surrogates for representing a landscape and offers alternative possible applications of the PGI method for evoking and understanding people’s views of landscape.

AB - Currently used technologies in energy industry are oftentimes potentially harmful for the environment and/or not sustainable in the long run (e.g. fossil and mineral based fuels, nuclear energy). Therefore the oncoming energy crisis must be solved by developing new sustainable energy supply that has lower or, preferably, negligible impact on the environment. Any new sustainable energy solutions will have to envelope three important sets of technologies: production, storage and transportation. Additionally, in order to determine whether these solutions are truly sustainable, adequate life cycle assessment methodology (LCA) needs to be developed and properly applied. This article gives a general survey of state of the art and current research trends in application of nanostructured materials for sustainable energy production, storage and transportation, as well as review of LCA methodology implemented in this domain. A special attention is given to already existent applications and possible future developments of nanotechnology for solar energy production, hydrogen economy, batteries and electrical energy transmission.

AB - This paper aims to highlight the advantages of using Life Cycle Assessment (or LCA) tool in energy sector for rational energy consumption, selection of green technologies and process optimization. Besides the definition and description of basic principles of this method and its historical development, previous examples of worldwide applications are analyzed. Review of these examples is made on the basis of a critical analysis of the available literature regarding the application of LCA for sustainable production of electricity and heat. Trend of using this tool since its inception until now is rising, together with a greater interest of general public to reduce negative impacts on the environment during production, use and disposal of various products. Compared to other countries (EU and beyond), in Serbia the LCA tool is insufficiently studied and practically unused. With this regard, special emphasis is placed on the possibility of practicing LCA in terms of proving the environmental suitability of biomass as an energy source, considering its huge potential in the Republic of Serbia. Wider utilization of LCA approach would also enable investigation and assessment of possibilities for heat production by different renewable energy sources in order to identify optimized environmental solutions for Serbian energy sector and to decrease dependence on energy imports through increased reliance on domestic energy resources.

AB - Nano-engineered materials are playing an ever growing role in the rapidly developing field of sustainable energy production. Besides providing numerous opportunities for innovations in this domain, utilisation of nanostructured materials raises numerous doubts regarding their impact on the environment and possible adverse effects on human health. Providing reliable methods for analysis, evaluation and dealing with the environmental and health effects of nanotechnology is therefore crucial. In this article we will try to give an outline of possible approaches to deployment of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools to nanomaterials used in certain applications for sustainable energy production. Use of such methods should also provide the possibility of comparing these new, emerging, technologies with that of already existing conventional ones in terms of their environmental, health and safety impacts.
