The effect of annealing temperatures and cooling rates on microstructure and mechanical properties of investment cast Ti-6Al-4V alloy

AB  - Production of investment castings of titanium alloys was considerably increased during last years due to the significant cost savings compared to complicated machined parts. However, the disadvantage of as-cast titanium alloys is that the heat-treatment remains only a limited option for improvement of their properties. The object of this paper was to study the effect of heat-treatment of investment cast Ti-6Al-4V alloy performing X-ray diffraction analysis, light microscopy and quantitative metallography together with hardness and room temperature tensile tests. The effect of annealing temperatures (above and below beta transus temperature) and cooling rates on microstructure and mechanical properties was discussed in terms of the beta ->alpha transformation. The results of this paper also show that, besides heat treatment parameters, melting and casting practice together with mold technology strongly influence the properties of castings.

AB  - Austempered ductile iron (ADI) has proved to be an excellent material as it possesses attractive properties: high strength, ductility and toughness are combined with good wear resistance and machinability. These properties can be achieved upon adequate heat treatment which yields the optimum microstructure for a given chemical composition. In this paper the results of an investigation the austempering of ADI alloyed with 0.45 % Cu for a range of times and temperatures are reported. The microstructure and fracture mode developed throughout these treatments have been identified by means of light and scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. It was shown that the strength, elongation and impact energy strongly depend on the amounts of bainitic ferrite and retained austenite. Based on these results, and optimal processing window was established.

Microstructure and toughness of CuNiMo austempered ductile iron

AB  - The effect of austempering on the microstructure and toughness of nodular cast iron (designated as CuNiMoSG) alloyed with molybdenum, copper, nickel, and manganese has been studied. Light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction technique were performed for microstructural characterization, whereas impact energy test was applied for toughness measurement. Specimens were austenitised at 860 degreesC, then austempered for various times at 320 and 400 degreesC, followed by ice-water quenching. Austempering at 320 degreesC produces a microstructure consisting of a mixture of acicular bainitic ferrite and the stable carbon-enriched austenite. In this microstructure epsilon-carbides are also identified after austempering up to 5 h. Fracture mode is changed from ductile to brittle with the prolonged time of austempering at 320 degreesC. The highest impact energy (115 kJ) corresponds not only to ductile fracture, but also to the maximum value of the volume fraction of retained austenite. Only martensitic structure was observed during austempering at 400 degreesC, inducing brittle fracture and significantly low-impact energy (10-12 kJ).

Crystallographic orientations of Ni3Al-based aluminide

AB  - Inverse pole figures have been plotted to determine preferred crystallographic orientations in a powder-compacted Ni3Al aluminide prealloyed with Fe, Ti and B. The main textural components, although weak, were noticeably altered by cold deformation, recrystallization and high-temperature deformation. Cold uniaxial compression generated a pronounced (110) orientation and the less common (112) orientation. The existence of the latter orientation was ascribed to the cubic --> tetragonal structural transformation (Ll(2) --> DO22) The beginning of recrystallization was characterized by a string of (113)+(112)+(111) orientations. However, after prolonged periods of annealing, the (113) orientation diminished, whereas the (111) and (112) orientations became stronger, perhaps due to preferred orientational growth. Deformation at high-temperature gave rise to strong (111) and (100)+(112) orientations. It was found that disordering and dynamic recrystallization simultaneously control high-temperature deformation.
