AB - A numerical analysis of welded connection between two steel structures is performed with the usage of the finite element approach. A frame stage‐like structure is placed between the main horizontal girders of the structure of the hall. A visual inspection of the frame revealed numerous irregularities of welds which brought demand for redesign and overall check. The emphasis in this paper is comparative calculation of initial and redesigned welded end‐joints, without imposing the optimal technical solution. It is used modern and particular finite element software for calculation of welded joints. The values of stresses in the welded joint as well in plates and members are lower than the permitted values for both models. However, the influence on the main structure is reduced with redesigned technical solution. The level of stresses is lower along with reduction of rotational stiffness of the joint. This can be considered as a relief to the main girders of the hall structure and should be a cost and a goal for supporting any additional structure.

AB - The paper deals with strength of load-carrying fillet welds with application of two different approaches. First one is calculation by classical/scholar approach while second one is devoted to finite element analysis. The classical approach is concerned with national and European engineering practice. The finite element approach includes the application of particular tool which preserves main recommendations from modern postulations in design of joints. The object of interest is welded beam-to-column joint with different structural elements and the stresses are obtained for two models. It is investigated correlation of results of weld stresses from both the approaches. Direct matching of results was neither expected nor found but basic correlation is revealed within the joint behaviour under loadings. Considering finite element approach as prevailing, its advantage is clearly shown throughout inclusion of local effects of plates. However, classical approach is essential for proper understanding of joint behaviour and should be always the first step in structural analysis. The usage of at least two different approaches is one way of improving safety checks in engineering and stands for purpose of validation or verification of design.

AB - This paper gives survey on up-to-date studies which deal with numerical simulations of bolted end-plate moment connections. The selection is performed with the aim to cover different design concepts which reflect the problem of joint behaviour in general. Main characteristics of joint design and corresponding analysis features are presented in tabular form intended to serve as guidance for appropriate modelling of bolted
end-plate connections. Consequently, the procedure for conducting numerical simulation in proper mode is proposed by authors. An illustrative example-case study of analysis of a extended stiffened end-plate bolted beam-to-column joint is shown. The design case is modelled with two finite element software packages which have different approaches and levels of complexity. Finally, the analytical calculation of this joint is done according to Eurocode 3 with the aim of validation. The moment-rotation curve, as a basis in this field, is obtained for each model. The results from numerical simulations with both the approaches are in good correlation. Basic characteristics of two mentioned design approaches are also explained as an orientation for engineers and reserchers in this field.

AB - The paper deals with the mathematical modelling of the dynamic behavior of the structure of the ship unloader. It is given the procedure for formulation of the reduced dynamic model which retains the main aspects of the behavior of the structure and yet is simple enough to be performed with standard engineering tools. The approach is applied on the real bridge-type grab ship unloader but can also be used on similar complex structures. Initially, the complete structure is modelled with finite element software where the natural frequencies were obtained. This 3D model is reduced to an equivalent plane model of the sea-side part of the boom. The postulation of the analytical approach is based on the model of a simple beam with an overhang where dynamic analysis is concerned with the Rayleigh Ritz method for estimating the adopted admissible functions. The results of the modal analysis of the reduced mathematical model showed a small difference from the results of finite element analysis which stands for the verification of the presented approach.

AB - The analysis of behaviour of extended one-sided stiffened bolted end-plate moment connection is revisited here. On the basis of experimental tests, the behaviour of beam-to-column joint with and without stiffener is investigated. The stress distribution and deformation characteristics were determined and discussed with corresponding results of finite element analysis of joint behaviour. Furthermore, the extensive finite element simulations were carried out and the obtained results are discussed in this paper. The main analyzed parameters are the geometrical characteristics of the plates added to the beam-to-column joint. Their influence on joint resistance and stiffness is observed including the possibility of material cost optimization. Overall, the comparison of used approaches confirms their conjoint importance except for the postulation where the stiffener is assumed to behave as a strut in the joint. Also, there are some practical recommendations in design which can be used by engineers.

AB - The end-plate bolted connections are widely used in the construction of metal buildings and steel portal frames and play a crucial role in the safety of steel structures. Studies agreed that joint rotational behavior should be considered in frame analysis due to the fact that majority of these joints are semi-rigid. This paper gives a survey on the progress in this topic, based on the studies in the last decade and main design approaches which are analytical, numerical and experimental. There are noted some principal characteristics of each method, along with some advantages and disadvantages. The illustrative example is given to describe the situation when all the mentioned methods are included on the single joint. It is proposed, as a good practice, to propose analytical model in that way to comply with experimental verification and to use numerical model in the form of validation in the last stages of joint design. Finally, it is noted that joint behavior under monotonic or cyclic loading, within the scope of the ductile failure modes of the joint, can be controlled with the design parameters of the end-plate and bolts.

AB - In this paper are presented results of tests and analyses of complex dynamic loads carried out on the bucket-wheel excavator SchRs 650/5x24 Krupp, as well as assessment of service life of vital welded structures of a bucket-wheel excavator boom subjected to cyclic loading with a variable amplitude through the use of experimental tests carried out in order to determine operational strength and growth of a fatigue crack for one structural part. Bucket-wheel excavator was built by "Thyssen Krupp" company, Germany. Outer loads, or in other words digging forces for the overburden and coal have been calculated on the basis of measured values of actual current intensity of the bucket-wheel drive and recorded output values of changeable loads. Correlations between the power of the bucket-wheel drive system and adequate hourly production, depending on the overall digging resistance which affects the stress condition of the bucket-wheel, were also determined. Results of the theoretical and experimental analysis of natural and forced oscillations of the support structure for various exploitation conditions are presented in first part of the paper. Deformations epsilon(i) determined by tensometric measurements on the rotating shaft of the bucket-wheel were converted into tangential stresses through the introduction of the modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio, which, along with the polar moment of inertia of the cross-section, define the moment of rotation on the bucket-wheel shaft. Through the use of the load - strength comparison method (maximization of the ratio of load and strength indicators) the application factor of the gear with the largest number of turns K-A has been determined. In the second part of the paper methodological approach for the assessment of service life of vital welded structures of a bucket-wheel excavator boom was presented. Assessment was done in order to determine operational strength and growth of a fatigue crack, through the use of experimental tests. Realized researches and results presented in this paper offer great possibilities for the analyses of behaviour of vital welded structures of the bucket-wheel boom. By the application of the measurement device with 8 channels for registration and processing of electric signals HBM Spider 8 and measurement tapes HBM 6/350xXY31 deformations were measured at vital welded structures of the boom in the area of the bucket-wheel. The objective of the test is to determine if there is a possibility of occurrence of plastic deformations or initial cracks due to fatigue at vital welded structures and to obtain data which define crack growth.

By the application of the measurement device with 8 channels for registration and processing of electric signals HBM Spider 8 and measurement tapes HBM 6/350xXY31 deformations were measured at vital welded structures of the boom in the area of the bucket-wheel. The objective of the test is to determine if there is a possibility of occurrence of plastic deformations or initial cracks due to fatigue at vital welded structures and to obtain data which define crack growth.",

AB - This paper deals with the local bending stresses at the steel runway beams
made of HEA sections. Some aspects of this structural problem are
considered here, with usage of finite element analysis (FEA). There are
presented three different models and several load cases to obtain the
values of local bending stresses which enable the comparison with the
results from adopted EN regulative. Specially, it is considered the possible
superposition of stresses for adjacent wheel loads. This is done due to
restriction in regulative which deals with the geometry of trolley vs. beam
width. It is confirmed some inconsistencies in current regulative, along
with the occurrence of affected zone in section with possible higher values
of stresses near the web. Without consideration of volume, it is noted that
distance of adjacent wheels has influence on the level of local stresses.

AB - The paper deals with numerical study on the stresses at the bolted end-plate moment connection, with application of finite element analysis. The prying effects in the joint are considered for the comparative analysis with analytical model of bolt calculation. There are observed three basic models of the joint which reflect variation of the joint stiffness, along with the cases of different parameters of end-plate thickness. It is shown that several parameters have effects on the stresses at the joint and need to be considered in the structural analysis of the frame structures. Also, there are given some recommendations for practical usage for the design of this kind of joints.

AB - The paper deals with experimental study of the stresses at the bolted end-plate moment connection. The design parameters are adopted to include prying effects in joint. A stress level is obtained in the elements where the highest values occur in the tension zone of the end-plate. The accompanied finite element analysis is performed for comparing purposes with experimental results. It is shown that end-plate thickness should be the unavoidable joint parameter in structural analysis of frame-like structures.
