Structural integrity analysis of the pre-stressed concrete dome of the Belgrade fair hall 1

AB  - Belgrade fair hall 1 is well known for its dome, which is still the world largest self-supported construction made of pre-stressed concrete, with its diameter of 106 m. In this paper the Finite Element Method (FEM) was performed to analyze different loading and supporting conditions. At the same time, crack growth in a support column was simulated by the extended FEM (XFEM). Results of numerical calculations indicate ingenious design of such a complex structure which was based on “hand” calculation decades ago, without computers. In addition to classical engineering and more advanced numerical calculations, risk based analysis was performed taking into account artificially introduced crack and Failure Analysis Diagram, obtained using stress intensity factor and net stress, as well as fracture toughness and critical stress. This analysis, made for the first time for Belgrade fair hall 1, proved that its structural integrity is jeopardized only when a crack reaches half the thickness of a steel bar.

AB  - Seismic actions cannot be predicted in time, location or intensity. Serious earthquake actions can cause the occurrence of different levels of damage of the elements and the structure as a whole, which can even lead to their collapse. The methods for evaluation of seismic performance of structures are discussed in this paper and the focus of the paper is on reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. Building structures are designed and built according to different standards that were valid at the time of their construction. Those standards were, more or less, less demanding than the current European, American and other modern standards. Criteria for the determination of damage degree are discussed in the paper. Review and comparison of international Code provisions related to this topic are discussed as well. Fragility analysis of existing buildings with different structural systems is a rational approach, based on the application of probabilistic methods. They are applied in order to determine and predict the structural performance and probable levels of damage. The classification of damage level and residual bearing capacity is essential after strong earthquake. This is necessary in order to decide the appropriate interventions, such as shoring and others. They are evaluated based on the condition of structures, considering: residual deformations, cracks, crush of concrete and so on. The methods of nonlinear analyses are used in order to determine the structural response and the results of the analysis are used for the fragility assessment. Post-earthquake assessment and analysis of seismic performance are analysed.

AB  - Dual systems of reinforced concrete (RC) moment frames with concrete shear walls have been used as common lateral load resisting systems in earthquake prone countries. In order to overcome damages caused by seismic actions in the above systems, a strengthening by cable-like members (tension-only tie-elements) can be used. In the present study, a numerical probabilistic treatment for the pounding problem concerning the seismic interaction between adjacent structures strengthened by cable-ties in such dual RC systems is presented when the input parameters are uncertain. This problem concerns the elastoplastic-fracturing unilateral contact between neighbouring structures during earthquakes and is considered as an inequality problem of dynamic structural contact mechanics. The Monte Carlo method is used for treating the uncertainty concerning input parameters. The purpose here is to estimate numerically and to control actively the influence of the cable-ties on the seismic response of the adjacent structures. Finally, in a practical case of two structures in a dual system, the effectiveness of the proposed methodology is shown.

AB  - The seismic upgrading of environmentally degraded existing reinforced concrete (RC)
structures by using ties (cable) elements is numerically investigated. Emphasis is given to
select the optimal strengthening version of ties system for the response of such RC
structures under multiple earthquakes effects. Damage indices are computed in order to
compare these responses before and after the retrofit by cable element strengthening, and so
to select the optimum strengthening version. For a typical example problem, the
effectiveness of the proposed computational approach is presented.

Performance-Based Seismic Evaluation of Soil-Pile-Bridge Pier Interaction Using Incremental Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis

AB  - The purpose of this paper is to present the methodology for performance-based seismic
evaluation of soil-pile-bridge pier interaction using the incremental nonlinear dynamic analysis
(INDA). The INDA analysis was post processed separately for the pier and for the pile, so that the
constructed PGA=f(DR) curves are in the capacitive domain. For these curves the authors identified
the IO, CP i GI performance levels, while the regression analyses were conducted based on the
specific DR and PGA parameters. Fragility curves were constructed based on the solutions of
regression analysis and the probability theory of log-normal distribution. Based on the results of
fragility analysis, reliability curves were also constructed.

mosta inkrementalnom nelinearnom dinamičkom analizom (INDA). Postprocesiranje INDA analiza je

abstract = "The purpose of this paper is to present the methodology for performance-based seismic
evaluation of soil-pile-bridge pier interaction using the incremental nonlinear dynamic analysis
(INDA). The INDA analysis was post processed separately for the pier and for the pile, so that the
constructed PGA=f(DR) curves are in the capacitive domain. For these curves the authors identified
the IO, CP i GI performance levels, while the regression analyses were conducted based on the
specific DR and PGA parameters. Fragility curves were constructed based on the solutions of
regression analysis and the probability theory of log-normal distribution. Based on the results of

AB  - U radu se analiziraju metode prora una perioda vibracija vi espratnih betonskih zgrada. Pri tome
komentarisane su preporuke Evropskih normi EN 1998-Deo 1 i neki literaturni podaci. Komentarisani
su razli iti koncepti projektovanja seizmi ki otpornih betonskih konstrukcija, uklju iv i kori  enje
metode pritisnutih  tapova i zatega. Analizirani su razli iti tipovi konstrukcija: okvirne, kao i zgrade sa
nose im zidovima sa i bez otvora. Na jednom primeru vi espratne zgrade sa regularnom i neregularnom
konfiguracijom data je uporedna analiza rezultata prora una. Pokazano je da pribli ne metode (metoda
ekvivalentnih bo nih sila) po pravilu daju znatno ve e vrednosti uticaja u konstrukciji nego ta nije
metode (multimodalna spektralna). Iz uporedne analize proistekle su odgovaraju e preporuke za
primenu metoda prora una konstrukcija zgrada, zavisno od njihove regularnosti.
AB  - The paper analyses methods of computing vibration periods of high-rise concrete buildings. Therefore,
the recommendations of European norms EN 1998-Part 1 are commented as well as some literature
data. Different concepts of designing seismically resistant concrete structures are discussed including
the application of the ties - strut method. Different types of structures are analysed: frames, and
buildings with bearing walls with and without openings. A comparative analysis of the calculation
results is given on an example of a high-rise building with regular and irregular configuration. It is
shown that approximate methods (the method of equivalent lateral forces) as a rule give higher values
of influences in the structure than more accurate methods (the multimodal spectral method). From the
comparative analyses arise corresponding recommendations on the implementation of methods for the
calculation of structures of buildings, depending on their regularity.
