AB - Bucket wheel excavators (BWEs) are the largest mobile terrestrial machines exposed to the working loads of a periodic character. This paper presents a small portion of the studies, conducted with the goal of proposing a new idea regarding preservation of the load-carrying
structures of these machines, based on the implementation of a controllable frequency-controlled drive of the excavating device. A detailed analysis of the dynamic response of the load-carrying structure is required in order to determine the domains of frequency of revolutions of the working device's driving motor where the dynamic response of the structure is favorable, and therefore successfully implement this idea. A methodologically-original study was conducted, using a unique dynamic model of the BWE slewing superstructure that allows for the continuous
variation of the frequency of excitation. This has yielded the resonant-free domains, i.e. the domains where the structure is not exposed to the excessive dynamic impacts.

AB - This paper deals with the LCA of a ball bearing used in belt conveyor idler.
Previous work had shown that ball bearing is manufacture intensive
product. Therefore herein conducted LCA is cradle-to-gate analysis and it
was focused on the production stage of the ball bearing. Chromium steel
and stainless steel were considered as ball bearing materials. Results had
shown that chromium steel from the ball bearing has the highest
environmental impact in all impact categories, followed by processes
related to machining of the chromium steel and forging. Change of the
lubricant harmed the environmental properties in this case. Future work
should consider different materials for raceways and balls.

AB - The last decade brought the blooming of the shuttle-based automated storage and retrieval system (SBS/RS) in many industrial applications. They proved the superiority over the mini-load automated storage and retrieval system mainly due to higher throughput capacity, high flexibility of future extension, much better energy efficiency resulting from lower energy consumption and high energy regeneration capability. A comprehensive literature review on SBS/RS given in the paper pointed out main specifics and crucial approximations and assumptions of the developed system performance estimation models or control strategies, as well as the main conclusions resulting from the obtained results. Presented modeling approaches could be a valuable tool for SBS/RS designers and other related decision makers to estimate the system efficiency in the starting phase of SBS/RS design activities.

Journal of Zhejiang University ‐ SCIENCE A (категорија М22) као рад под називом „Basic parameters of the static stability, loads and strength of the vital parts of the bucket wheel excavator’s slewing superstructure“ (https://doi.org/10.1631/jzus.A1500037), Прилог 3.

AB - This paper presents the results of the pulley fracture analysis. Experimental investigations confirmed that the chemical composition and basic mechanical properties of the pulley material, except the impact energy at a temperature of - 20 degrees C, meet the requirements of the corresponding standard. The impact energy value at the temperature of - 20 degrees C is for approximate to 45% lower than the prescribed value which has considerable influence on the appearance of the brittle fracture, especially having in mind the fact that the bucket wheel excavators operate at low temperatures. Metallographic examinations as well as magnetic particle inspections indicated that initial cracks in the welded joints occurred during the manufacture of the pulleys. Characteristic levels of the rope load cycle are obtained by using in-house software which includes the dynamic effects of the resistance-to-excavation. The FEA results pointed out that in the representative load cases the combinations of the mean stress and the alternating stress in the pulley critical zone lie considerably below the limit line of the modified Goodman's diagram. The conclusion, based on the presented results, is that the fracture of the pulley appeared as the result of the 'manufacturing-in' defects.

AB - Mounting and dismantling of large-scale mechanical systems is a complex engineering challenge due to several factors, such as structural diversity and size of handled structures, limited
maneuvering options, and absence of related literature, to name the few, all of which make each problem unique. Numerous disasters throughout the history created a need for a safe approach to the problem of executing such procedures risk-free, while preserving the structural integrity and functionality of the structures. One of the most reliable methods is the application of unique below-the hook lifting devices and the goal of this paper is to present the benefits of their use via two examples. Case 1 deals with dismounting of dated constructions in a densely populated area, with limited structural data provided. Case 2 is focused on mounting of a large-scale roof structure in harsh boundary conditions, with limited maneuvering space. Results presented in this paper represent a contribution to the field of below-the hook lifting devices.

work, in order to represent guidance for designers of material handling
equipment. Safety requirements for beams are implemented in given
algorithm. Specially, the beam model of monorail crane concerns the
stress, deflection and lateral buckling proof as main considerations in
design of such systems. There are given capacity curves for various I-sections
with respect to desired span of runway which enables fast and
easy adoption of structural elements. Also, they can be used for capacity
estimation of the single girder bridge cranes and other beamlike
structures.

AB - Mounting of large-scale mechanical systems involves lifting and positioning of the so-called specific loads, namely structures of great dimensions and masses whose functionality and structural integrity should not be jeopardized during the realization of the erection procedures. Two examples of spatial truss roof construction mountings are presented in this paper as case 1, underlying the effect of unique lifting device usage on uniform load distribution on the structures being lifted. Case 2 deals with mounting of three tall vertical pressure vessels of different weights and heights with the same lifting gear and traverse specially designed to accomplish the aforementioned tasks. Case 3 is focused on the redesign of the existing traverse in order to fulfill the task of lifting and precise positioning of the bucket wheel excavator segment, a truss structure of a great span, weighing 90 t. Results presented in this paper represent a contribution in the field of below-the-hook lifting devices design, arising from the specificity of engineering problems dealing with mounting of large-scale structures.

AB - This paper describes the failure analysis results of undercarriage and superstructure vital
subassemblies, which led to periodical stoppage and eventually total collapse of the bucket wheel excavator (BWE) SchRs 1760, once the machine with the highest theoretical capacity operating on the overburden excavation in open pit mine “Kolubara” - Serbia. It is conclusive that the main cause of two wheel bogie structural failure, described as case 1, is its insufficient strength during the action of lateral forces which are dominantly applied during the BWE curve travel. Case 2 analyses the support structure of portal tie-rods failure which was the consequence of superposition of the negative effects caused by inadequate shaping and dimensioning of the support assembly for given load conditions, as well as influences of defects of the metal weld structure. Both of the described failures are caused by the design-in faults.

AB - The extremely heavy duty conditions of the Surface Mining Machines (SMM) provide fertile ground for the occurrence of the various types of failures in their travelling mechanisms and belonging substructures. Although failures of the SMM travelling mechanisms occur infrequently, they may lead to very serious or even disastrous consequences. Even in cases when consequences are not catastrophic they cause direct costs, as well as indirect costs due to the downtime that substantially diminishes the effects of SMM exploitation. Furthermore, replacement of damaged parts is executed on site, often in hard working conditions that essentially prolong the downtime of the complete surface mining system. This paper discusses the causes of the failures in the vital parts of the crawler travel gear of the bucket wheel excavators and spreaders: chain links, track wheels, two-wheel bogies and undercarriage. Based on the results of the analytical–numerical–experimental analyses, it was concluded
that: (a) chain links' failures are caused by 'manufacturing-in' defects; (b) track wheels'
failures are caused by 'design-in' and ' manufacturing-in' defects; (c) failures of the twowheel bogies and undercarriage are caused by 'design-in' defects. Besides that, the redesigned structures of the two-wheel bogies and undercarriage are presented. The validity of the presented reconstruction designs are unquestionably confirmed by their failure less exploitation after the reconstruction. Finally, the obtained results are important because the same problems could arise in the crawler travelling mechanisms of wide class of earthmoving and material handling machines.

AB - This paper presents the results of the study dedicated to the problem of the bucket wheel excavator equalizing system (ES) strength. Finite element analysis of two wheel (TWB), four wheel (FWB) and eight wheel (EWB) bogies were conducted in order to determine weak points in ES structure. Strength and carrying capacity of FWB and EWB structures might be jeopardized due to their insufficient strength under lateral forces acting during curve travel. Severe failure of similar TWB structure is also presented and certain paraleles were made.

AB - The supporting truss of the counterweight boom is a vital part of the bucket chain excavator's (BCE) superstructure. The occurrence and propagation of cracks in the supporting truss columns' heads may lead to BCE collapse. The goals of the study presented in this paper were to: (a) diagnose the cause of cracks occurrence; (b) define the reconstruction design of the supporting truss columns and (c) validate the reconstructed structure by numerical-experimental analysis. In order to clarify the causes of cracks occurrence, experimental investigations were performed with the purpose of defining the chemical composition, tensile properties, impact toughness and macrohardness of the columns' material. Metallographic examinations were also conducted. Based on the results of finite elements analyses (FEA) and experimental analyses it can be concluded that cracks are caused by the 'design-in' defects. The redesign solution enabled repair and reconstruction in field conditions, without previously dismantling any substructure of the BCE superstructure. Thereby the time required for performing reconstruction is shortened and indirect costs due to the BCE downtime are considerably diminished. Both the experimental analysis of the stress state of the reconstructed columns in regular working conditions and the failure-free exploitation have confirmed the validity of the reconstruction design, while the BCE excavated approximately 8.5 x 10(6) t of coal and 1.8 x 10(6) m(3) of overburden after the reconstruction.

AB - Bucket wheel excavator SchRs 350/5x12 is one of the oldest mining
machines still operating in open pit mines in Serbia. Bucket wheel drive
gearbox of classical type had to be substituted with planetary one, in order
to eliminate the original design drawbacks. Integration of new bucket
wheel drive solution requires a subtle redesign of the bucket wheel boom.
Calculation verification of bucket wheel boom structure is realized on
basis of comparative stress analysis of the original and redesigned
construction. Sixteen different load cases were analyzed. Results of finite
element analysis are presented in this paper. Presented redesign solution
makes the installation of new bucket wheel drive possible, maintenance
process easier and prolongs the service life of the machine.
