Teaching mathematics during the pandemic: Students' and teachers' perceptions of the task context

AB  - The global COVID-19 pandemic has affected the educational system
around the world, which has led to an increase in scientific papers dealing with
the implementation of online models in emergency situations. This research
used a combined mixed method to examine the experiences of students, classroom teachers and mathematics teachers, in aim to identify the teaching topics of mathematics which students and teachers considered the easiest when
solving tasks during online teaching, as well as those which were considered
the most difficult. The assumption was that in the teaching process, the biggest problem occurs when solving text tasks with a real-life topic, and that this
problem is directly conditioned by the degree of use of text tasks with a reallife topic by the mathematics teachers. For the purposes of the research, two
(semi)structured questionnaires were constructed. The research was conducted during May 2021 and February–March 2023. The research sample consisted
of students, classroom teachers and mathematics teachers from 13 schools in
the territory of the Republic of Serbia. The research results show that students
found tasks with a theme from life most difficult in the field of geometry, and
the easiest in the field of arithmetic. According to teachers, the reason for this
are the didactic-methodical limitations they encountered while teaching in the
online space.

AB  - Innovation is often described as the main driving force of business, which can lead to the company's sustainable growth. Not all innovation dimensions are equally responsible for the sustainability of businesses. Therefore, this study examines the sustainability of women-owned businesses by exploring the influence of selected variables on specific dimensions of companies' innovation capacities. Based on the commonly applied methodologies for assessing the innovation capacity of companies such as IMP³rove and Innovate, the following variables were chosen for the analysis of the impact on innovation in the context of the sustainability of SMEs: 1) annual income and its impact on the decision to invest in innovation 2) the sector of operation and its influence on expectations regarding growth 3) the expectations regarding growth and its impact to a range of innovation dimensions. Different techniques were used, starting with descriptive statistics, then Cross-tabulation, Pearson's chi-square test and ANOVA as the most appropriate techniques to conduct statistical analysis. The research has indicated that annual income does not have a decisive influence on the decision to invest in innovation, as does the sector. However, the sector of operations has a significant influence on expectations regarding growth. Also, there is a statistically significant difference between growth expectations and dimensions such as client base and product development plan, market awareness and perception, innovation strategy, decision-making process, employee training, business networking, and external advice. While exploring the innovation activity of launching new products/services, we came to a finding that is potentially risky for the sustainability of women’s businesses, namely that 50% of the companies in the sample offer only one product to one customer. That is why it is important that companies that have a high awareness of the need to innovate diversify their product and client portfolio and thus ensure greater independence on the market and, therefore, sustainability.

The Main Factors that Determine the Company’s Innovations–Empirical Research of Companies in Serbia

AB  - In the constantly changing business environment, innovations enable companies to achieve competitiveness and expand to new markets. Measuring a company’s ability to innovate is important for both theoretical consideration and practical application. This paper presents the analysis of 21 dimensions of the innovation capacity of small and medium enterprises in Serbia. The observed sample included 106 companies of various size and activities. The following main factors that affect the innovation capacity of companies had been identified: adaptability and growth projection, business network, management style, knowledge management, company resources and the speed of product development for the market. The identified factors were used to predict the future of the company’s cooperation with the academy, and whether the company will undertake activities to protect intellectual property rights, which are both considered important parts of the innovation process in companies. The results of the research indicate the important factors that determine a company’s survival in modern market conditions. It was obtained that companies with a developed business network are more willing to cooperate with the academic community, while the management style has the greatest influence on the protection of intellectual property.

Lean Tools for Improving the Teaching Process in Serbia - Empirical Research

AB  - Research Question: This article identifies the most prominent lean wastes in the education process in primary schools in Serbia and the most efficient lean tools for their reduction. Objective: Lean management has been recognized as a valuable strategy suitable for application in various fields. Its implementation in the field of education has shown a rather slow progress, and the Serbian education system is not an exception. Idea: The idea of the research was to investigate the possible outcomes of the lean management implementation in primary schools in Serbia, and its possible benefits. Data: For this purpose, a specialized questionnaire concerning lean wastes and lean tools was designed intended for class and subject teachers. Tools: Statistical data analyses were used to determine the relationships between variables, and the Weighted Scoring method was applied to identify the most represented lean wastes in the education process, as well as the prioritization of lean tools. Findings:  According to the results, the factor of the lean tools impact in regard to the lean wastes reduction was evaluated as “higher than 3” (on a scale of 1-5), which confirmed the efficiency of the considered lean tools in the lean wastes reduction. Also, the significant differences between the public and the private education sectors in terms of the lean application are shown, especially regarding the type of curriculum present (national or international). Contribution: The research has shown that lean management could be successfully applied in primary schools, in order to improve school organization and the teaching process flow, which highly contributes to the school's overall competitiveness. The guidelines for the lean management implementation are given as well as the recommendations to the creators of education policies. Certain limitations should be taken into account, regarding the restricted number of schools involved and specific sample group.

Profili nastavnika osnovnih škola u Srbiji prema opredeljenju za nastavni model tokom pandemije COVID-19

AB  - Kvalitet nastavnog procesa u velikoj meri zavisi od nastavnika i njihovih kvalifikacija - uloga nastavnika je veoma značajna za uspešnu implementaciju novih nastavnih metoda. Ovaj rad je deo kvantitativne studije ispitivanja iskustva nastavnika osnovnih škola u Srbiji o radu u modelu onlajn nastave realizovanom tokom pandemije COVID-19, u poređenju sa tradicionalnim modelom nastave. Cilj rada je da se na osnovu iskaza i stavova nastavnika sagleda i definiše profil nastavnika u odnosu na izbor nastavnog modela koji im više odgovara za rad: profil nastavnika koji preferiraju isključivo tradicionalni model nastave i profil nastavnika koji preferiraju onlajn model nastave ili ne prave razliku u radu između ova dva nastavna modela. Pretpostavka je bila da će nastavnici koji imaju manje godina radnog staža, više stručnog usavršavanja i viši stepen obrazovanja preferirati onlajn model nastave. Za potrebe istraživanja konstruisan je onlajn upitnik iz dva dela. Prvi deo upitnika odnosio se na socio-demografske podatke, a drugi na karakteristike nastavnog procesa u zavisnosti od primenjenog modela. Za procenu uticprethodnih obuka na izbor preferiranog modela nastave korišćen je t-test nezavisnih uzoraka. Istraživanje je sprovedeno tokom januara i februara 2021. godine. Uzorak istraživanja činilo je 609 predmetnih nastavnika. Rezultati istraživanja pokazuju da izbor tradicionalnog ili onlajn nastavnog modela zavisi od toga koliko se nastavnik oseća kompetentnim za izvođenje onlajn nastave i od dužine trajanja prethodne obuke u okviru redovnog stručnog usavršavanja iz oblasti IKT-a. Rezultati istraživanja samo su delimično potvrdili početnu pretpostavku.
AB  - The quality of the teaching process highly depends on teachers and their qualifications, and the teacher's role plays a very important part in the implementation of the new teaching methods. The results presented in this paper are part of the quantitative study which investigated the primary teachers' perception of the online teaching model that has been realized in Serbia during the COVID-19 pandemic, in comparison to the traditional teaching model. The paper aims to define and present the teachers' profiles, based on their preference for a certain teaching model: the profile of the teachers who prefer working in the traditional teaching model, and the profile of the teachers who prefer working in the online teaching model, or do not make any difference between the two, based on the professional data and their statements and attitudes regarding the comparison of traditional and online teaching models. It was assumed that the teachers with less work experience, more professional training and higher education level would generally prefer the online teaching model. For the research purposes, the specialized two-part questionnaire was designed. The first part included questions concerning the socio-demographic background, while the second part investigated the teachers' attitudes towards the characteristics of the teaching process in both traditional and online teaching models. The independent-sample t-test was used to estimate the influence of previous training on the choice of the preferred teaching model. The research was conducted during January and February 2021. The research sample included 609 examinees. The research results showed that the choice of the preferred teaching model depends on the self-assessment of the teachers' competencies required for the online teaching model, as well as on the duration of the training in the field of Information and Communication Technologies, as a part of the regular professional improvement training. The initial assumption was only partially confirmed by the research results.

Pretpostavka je bila da će nastavnici koji imaju manje godina radnog staža, više stručnog usavršavanja i viši stepen obrazovanja preferirati onlajn model nastave. Za potrebe istraživanja konstruisan je onlajn upitnik iz dva dela. Prvi deo upitnika odnosio se na socio-demografske podatke, a drugi na karakteristike nastavnog procesa u zavisnosti od primenjenog modela. Za procenu uticprethodnih obuka na izbor preferiranog modela nastave korišćen je t-test nezavisnih uzoraka. Istraživanje je sprovedeno tokom januara i februara 2021. godine. Uzorak istraživanja činilo je 609 predmetnih nastavnika. Rezultati istraživanja pokazuju da izbor tradicionalnog ili onlajn nastavnog modela zavisi od toga koliko se nastavnik oseća kompetentnim za izvođenje onlajn nastave i od dužine trajanja prethodne obuke u okviru redovnog stručnog usavršavanja iz oblasti IKT-a. Rezultati istraživanja samo su delimično potvrdili početnu pretpostavku., The quality of the teaching process highly depends on teachers and their qualifications, and the teacher's role plays a very important part in the implementation of the new teaching methods. The results presented in this paper are part of the quantitative study which investigated the primary teachers' perception of the online teaching model that has been realized in Serbia during the COVID-19 pandemic, in comparison to the traditional teaching model. The paper aims to define and present the teachers' profiles, based on their preference for a certain teaching model: the profile of the teachers who prefer working in the traditional teaching model, and the profile of the teachers who prefer working in the online teaching model, or do not make any difference between the two, based on the professional data and their statements and attitudes regarding the comparison of traditional and online teaching models. It was assumed that the teachers with less work experience, more professional training and higher education level would generally prefer the online teaching model. uspešno poslovanje kompanije, kako omogućava povezivanje sa različitim tržištima i
obezbeđuje konkurentnost, što je posebno značajno za one u zemljama u razvoju. U
ovom radu su prikazani rezultati istraživanja u kojoj meri se u kompanijama u Srbiji
primenjuje strategija upravljanja inovacijama. Istraživanjem je obuhvaćeno 106
kompanija. Cilj istraživanja bio je utvrditi faktore koji utiču na zastupljenost inovacionih
kapaciteta u kompanijama. Za potrebe istraživanja konstruisan je upitnik, kojim je,
uzimajući u obzir 21 dimenziju upravljanja inovacijama, trebalo ispitati u kojoj meri
kompanije u Srbiji primenjuju inovacione strategije. Podaci su obrađeni primenom
statističkog programa IBM SPSS 19. Metoda analize varijanse (ANOVA) pokazuje da
dimenzije upravljanja inovacijama zavise od veličine kompanije u odnosu na broj
zaposlenih i novčani obrt kompanije.

AB  - Poslednjih godina informaciono-komunikacione tehnologije (IKT) dobijaju sve značajnije
mesto u obrazovnom sistemu. Tehnološki razvoj zahteva unapređenje obrazovnog sistema i
osposobljavanje učenika za novu eru, ali ujedno predstavlja izazov, posebno za nastavnike. Usled
pandemije korona virusa obrazovni sistem Srbije se neočekivano i neplanirano, poput drugih
obrazovnih sistema širom sveta, našao pred obavezom da u najkraćem mogućem roku celokupni
obrazovno-vaspitni program realizuje putem udaljene online nastave. Nakon nepune godine dana
implementacije novog modela učenja (tokom januara i februara 2021. godine) sprovedeno je
empirijsko istraživanje sa ciljem da se utvrdi stepen i brzina prihvatanja promene. Ispitivan je nivo
obučenosti nastavnog kadra iz domena IKT, kao i odnos nastavnika prema primeni tradicionalnog i
online modela nastave. Sa tim ciljem je sprovedeno istraživanje putem ankete među nastavnicima
osnovnih škola u Srbiji. Uzorak ispitanika je činilo 609 nastavnika predmetne nastave. Dobijeni
rezultati su pokazali da, iako je oko 50% nastavnika svoje veštine iz domena IKT ocenilo kao
visoke, ipak većina njih za realizaciju vaspitno-obrazovnih ciljeva preferira tradicionalni model
nastave.

AB  - The education system is facing the permanent challenge to adapt to the constantly changing
states in science, technology, and economy, and it plays an important role in the overall society development and socio-economic progress. In order to establish a high-quality, efficient education system, it is necessary to develop the teaching staff competences in accordance with the innovations in the education field. The quality of the teaching process largely depends on the extent to which modern teaching methods are applied, which are, in the contemporary context, based on the use of the information and communication technologies in the teaching process (ICT). Following the technology advancement and the information channels transformation, the role of the teacher has changed, and in this new context the teacher is assigned with a new role of the “teaching manager”, or the leader of the teaching process. This paper shows comparative analyses of the relations between the teaching stuff ICT training and the organization of the teaching process, when observed in traditional and online teaching settings. The research was conducted in Serbia in January and February of 2021, during the Covid-19 pandemic, and included the sample of teachers who work in primary schools (N=609).

AB  - Risk based approach to assess structural integrity and life of pressure vessel has been presented, starring from EU PED 2014/68 and API 581, ending with use of basic fracture mechanics parameters. In the scope of risk matrix, structural integrity has been tackled by use of the Failure Assessment Diagram (FAD), while structural life was assessed by means of Paris law, using fatigue crack growth rate as relevant parameter. Several case studies have been provided to illustrate this comprehensive approach, including penstock and air storage tanks in Reversable Hydro Power Plant, and two spherical storage tanks, one for vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), the other for ammonia. Besides the assessment of integrity and life, including some important issue like over-pressurizing, roles of engineers and managers in this process is defined and explained.

AB  - Following the declaration of the state of emergency in Serbia, after the
novel COVID-19 outbreak was declared a global pandemic, all the educational institutions
in the country were closed, and the different modes of emergency remote teaching (ЕRТ)
were introduced. In order to highlight the problems and attitudes of students, in regard
to the newly introduced online-based emergency remote teaching model, we conducted
a survey with high school students. The research question was how the unplanned switch
from the traditional learning setting to online learning affected the learning practice, and
what the outcomes of the integration of digital technology in education are. The aim of the
study was to determine the best advantages and the biggest disadvantages of the introduced
emergency remote teaching model, from the students’ point of view, during the initial phase
of the teaching model implementation. The obtained results indicated the best advantages
of the applied learning model in the domain of learning time management opportunities,
and the biggest disadvantages in relation to the teaching and learning technical support
problems and social distance. The results of this study could be used by policymakers and
practitioners in order to prepare plans and programs for emergency remote teaching, and
also to improve traditional teaching models.

AB  - Risk based analysis of reverse hydro power plant penstock structural integrity is performed using fracture mechanics parameters. AB  - Poslednjih godina svedoci smo brojnih istraživanja i pilot-projekata, kako kod nas tako i u svetu, koji se bave ispitivanjem onlajn učenja. U radu se teorijski i empirijski analiziraju mogućnosti onlajn učenja. Teorijski deo se odnosi na analizu razlika tradicionalnog i onlajn učenja na osnovu proučavanja stručne literature. Empirijsko istraživanje je sprovedeno pomoću upitnika koji je distribuiran putem različitih internet platformi tokom aprila 2020. godine. Ovim istraživanjem obuhvaćeno je 339 učenika srednjih škola u Srbiji, koji su u periodu vanrednog stanja usled pandemije Covid-19 pohađali onlajn nastavu. Dobijeni podaci su obrađeni kvalitativnom analizom. Cilj istraživanja bio je da se identifikuju prednosti onlajn učenja u odnosu na tradicionalni model nastave s aspekta učenika srednjih škola, kao i da se daju preporuke za dalja istraživanja i unapređivanja u praksi. Rezultati istraživanja pokazali su da učenici srednjih škola u Srbiji prepoznaju prednosti onlajn učenja, koje se odnose na uštedu vremena, mogućnosti upravljanja procesom učenja i unapređenje rezultata nastavnog procesa.
AB  - V poslednie gody my stali svidetelâmi mnogočislennyh issledovanij i pilotnyh proektov kak v našej strane, tak i v mire, kotorye kasaûtsâ èkspertizy onlajn-obučeniâ. V dannoj stat'e teoretičeski i èmpiričeski analiziruûtsâ vozmožnosti onlajn-obučeniâ. Teoretičeskaâ čast' otnositsâ k analizu raznicy meždu tradicionnym i onlajn-obučeniem, na osnove izučeniâ literatury po special'nosti. Èmpiričeskoe issledovanie provodilos' s ispol'zovaniem ankety, rasprostranennoj čerez različnye internet-platformy v tečenie aprelâ 2020 goda. Issledovanie provedeno na primere 339 učenikov srednih škol v Serbii, kotorye poseŝali onlajn-klassy vo vremâ črezvyčajnogo položeniâ iz-za pandemii Covid-19. Polučennye dannye obrabotany s primeneniem kačestvennogo analiza. Cel'û issledovaniâ bylo vyâvit' preimuŝestva onlajn-obučeniâ, po sravneniû s tradicionnoj model'û obučeniâ s točki zreniâ anketirovannyh učenikov, a takže dat' rekomendacii dlâ dal'nejših issledovanij i ulučšeniâ praktiki. Rezul'taty issledovaniâ pokazali, čto učeniki v Serbii priznaût preimuŝestva onlajn-obučeniâ, kotorye svâzany s èkonomiej vremeni, vozmožnost'û upravlât' processom obučeniâ i ulučšat' rezul'taty učebnogo processa.
AB  - In recent years, there have been numerous studies and pilot-projects both in Serbia and around the world, dealing with on-line learning. This paper analyzes the possibilities of online learning theoretically and empirically. The theoretical section presents an analysis of differences between traditional and on-line learning based on a review of the literature. The empirical study was carried out using a questionnaire distributed through various internet platforms in April 2020. The survey comprised 339 high school students in Serbia who attended on-line classes during the state of emergency imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The data thus collected were processed using qualitative analysis. The aim of the study was to identify the advantages of on-line learning relative to the traditional model of instruction from the perspective of secondary school students, and to offer recommendations for further research and improvements in practice. The results of the study suggest that secondary school students in Serbia recognize the advantages of on-line learning in terms of time efficiency, the possibility to manage the learning process and improvement of the results of the instructional process.

AB  - The process of digital transformation affects all segments of society,
including the education system. The practice has shown that, compared to the
manufacturing sectors, the education sector has been less open to the introduction of
the modern technologies. When implemented in education, modern technology has
the potential to improve students' skills, motivate them, and encourage them to
engage in the learning process actively. The introduction of the digital educational
methods in teaching, extracurricular and administrative activities leads to the better
quality of the educational process, the development of digital competencies of
teachers and students, the digital culture development, etc. The digital educational
methods applied in teaching are designed to help the teacher create and collect
assignments virtually, instead of in the form of printed media, which is less time -
consuming. They also enable the teacher to have an insight into the student's work,
to check if the task has been completed, as well as to give direct feedback and
grades to the student in a much shorter period of time. Nowadays, there are many
applications available on the Android, Windows, and Apple markets, so identifying
the best ones is a great challenge. In recent years, the education system of Serbia has
paid a special attention to digitalization and the distance learning educational model
development. These activities were implemented through various pilot programs that
included only previously selected schools. However, to the present day, i.e. until the
state of emergency due to the spread of COVID 19 was declared, the Serbian
education system had never faced the challenge of "switching" the entire education
concept to the model of on-line distance learning. In order to identify the most
efficient applications for the on-line distance learning education model
implementation, the survey was conducted among the high school students in
Serbia. This paper aims to investigate the ways of communication between students
and teachers in the case of the applied emergency remote teaching model, as well as
to determine the advantages and disadvantages of this model.

AB  - Risk management of a hydro power plant has been analysed from fracture mechanics point of view. The research is focused on the risk and integrity assessment of pressure equipment in a reversible hydro power plant in order to determine to what extent it poses a risk to Bajina Basta settlement and its inhabitants. The risk matrix has been used to assess risk level according to probability and consequence in a more descriptive way, whereas the failure assessment diagram has been used as an alternative engineering approach, including level II analysis.

AB  - Brze promene u tehnologiji i globalnoj politici koje karakterišu savremeni svet
zahtevaju da se stalno menjaju i unapređuju načini upravljanja i samo poslovno
okruženje. Jedan od vidova prilagođavanja zahtevima savremenog ekonomskog razvoja
i tehnološkog napretka je lean pristup, čija implementacija u proizvodnim i
neproizvodnim delatnostima uključuje tehnike uspostavljanja produktivne radne kulture
i efikasnog radnog okruženja. Zbog značajnih promena koje ovaj pristup donosi u sve
segmente kompanije, njegovo prihvatanje od strane zaposlenih u velikoj meri zavisi od
načina na koji se uvodi. Veoma je važno da postupak implementacije lean metodologije
bude sproveden na način koji će smanjiti stres, a samim tim i otpor zaposlenih. U radu
je predstavljen postupak uvođenja lean pristupa u kompanijama, prateći izazovi u tom
procesu kao i preporuke za uspešnu implementaciju lean-a

AB  - The effect of proof over-pressure on pipeline structural integrity using fracture mechanics parameters is analysed in the case of pipeline in Reversed Hydro Power Plant, made of High Strength Low Alloyed steel with 800 MPa tensile strength due to special design requirements. To assess its structural integrity, extensive testing of the full-scale prototype had been performed, including hydrostatic pressurizing. Since plastic strain was recorded during proof over-pressurizing, special attention is given to the fact that this is actually a mechanism for crack initiation and propagation. To investigate this effect micromechanical modelling is considered, as well as the Failure Assessment Diagramme. It is shown that over-pressuring has potential detrimental effect on pipeline safety, i. e. structural integrity.

Primena lin menadžmenta u školama - prikaz studije slučaja

AB  - Ideja lina je nastala u automobilskoj industriji, gde brze montažne linije i standardizovane radne procedure predstavljaju sasvim drugačije okruženje od škole. Ipak, u svetu je prepoznato da se principi lin razmišljanja u značajnoj meri mogu primeniti u velikom broju oblasti ljudskog delovanja. Svrha ovog rada je da prikaže kako se alati i principi lin filozofije mogu implementirati u oblasti obrazovanja i primeniti za poboljšanje efikasnosti. Kreatori obrazovnih politika u Srbiji predlažu različite modele koji će dovesti do uvećanja efikasnosti obrazovnog sistema, pri čemu može biti korisno razmotriti i lin pristup koji je u svetu pokazao svoje prednosti. Rad se zasniva na analizi relevantnih izvora naučne i stručne literature. Autorke su koristile pregled literature i primenu lina u obrazovanju na konkretnom primeru da bi objasnile odnos i između lin filozofije i obrazovanja, kako bi odgovorile na pitanja, kakve koristi savremene škole mogu očekivati od primene ove filozofije.

Lica, formiruûŝie politiku v oblasti obrazovaniâ v Serbii, predlagaût različnye modeli, kotorye povysât èffektivnost' sistemy obrazovaniâ, i možet byt' polezno rassmotret' LIN podhod, kotoryj pokazal svoi preimuŝestva v mire. Stat'â osnovana na analize sootvetstvuûŝih istočnikov naučnoj i professional'noj literatury. AB  - The paper presents the risk analysis of an air tank failure at RHPP Bajina Basta. The applied procedure involves the determination of the risk matrix, i.e. the combined probability (frequency) of events and consequences to humans, the environment, and the facility itself. The analysis has shown that in case of very low probability and severe consequences the risk is medium, and as such requires careful monitoring of the state of the tank, as well as taking all other failure prevention measures.

AB  - Rad istražuje promene u oblasti privrednog, prostornog i društvenog razvoja gradskog naselja Bajina Bašta nastale pod uticajem izgradnje postrojenja hidroelektrane „Bajina Bašta“. Vremenski okvir istraživanja obuhvata period posle Drugog svetskog rata od početka dinamične socijalističke urbanizacije 1961. godine zaključno sa 1989. godinom. Posleratni razvoj Bajine Bašte je tipičan primer preobražaja naselja prema odrednicama socijalističke urbanizacije koja pretpostavlja industriju kao okosnicu urbanog razvoja. Razvoj naselja odvijao se u okviru planske elektrifikacije kao jednog od velikih razvojnih projekata socijalističke modernizacije u Jugoslaviji koji su se oslanjali na tehnološka dostignuća u procesu unapređenja zaostalih društveno-ekonomskih odnosa. Cilj istraživanja je uspostavljanje veze između izgradnje elektroenergetskih postrojenja i razvoja i modernizacije naselja, i određivanje prirode i obima uočenog uticaja u odnosu na specifičnosti društveno-ekonomskog sistema i stepena tehnološkog razvoja. Vodeći se teorijskom postavkom Anri Lefevra (Henri Lefebvre) da tehnološki razvoj utiče na oblikovanje prostora grada posredstvom društvenog delovanja istraživanje polazi od pretpostavke da proces elektrifikacije, koji u širem smislu podrazumeva opštu dostupnost električne energije, utiče na promenu proizvodnih odnosa i načna života, i da izgradnja hidroenergetskog postrojenja kao složene strukture specifične funkcije ima veliku ulogu u procesu urbanog razvoja. Uticaj hidroenergetskog postrojenja na razvoj i modernizaciju naselja Bajina Bašta razmatra se u okviru navedenog teorijskog i interpretativnog aspekta. Oslanjajući se na teorijsko polazište koncepta modernosti istraživanje razmatra različite interpretacije modernizacije i utvrđuje osnovne odlike, činioce i uslove realizacije modernizacijskih procesa u odnosu na aspekte tehnološkog razvoja, sa posebnim osvrtom na uspostavljanje veze sa procesima elektrifikacije i industrijalizacije u okviru vrednosnog sistema jedne mlade socijalističke države. Interpretativni deo istraživanja obuhvata studiju slučaja naselja Bajina Bašta za vreme izgradnje i nakon puštanja u rad hidroenergetskih postrojenja, u okviru koje se analizira uloga elektrifikacije u procesu modernizacije naselja u odnosu na razvoj industrije, urbani razvoj i društvene promene, i osvrt na slučaj elektrifikacije Užica početkom 20. veka i doprinos ovog procesa razvoju lokalne industrijske proizvodnje. Uključuje i razmatranje aspekata opšteg uticaja na okruženje koji su u vezi sa tehnološkim odlikama postrojenja. Interpretacija rezultata istraživanja daje uporednu analizu prethodnog stanja i ostvarenih promena prema utvrđenim merilima i analizu negativnih posledica u slučaju mogućeg neželjenog događaja tokom rada postrojenja. Time je definisan uticaj hidroenergetskog postrojenja na razvoj i modernizaciju naselja u okviru šireg teorijskog okvira koji povezuje primenu tehnoloških inovacija sa aspektima svakodnevnog života. Rad zaključuje da je izgradnja HE „Bajina Bašta“ tokom perioda socijalističke modernizacije uticala na uspostavljanje novog društveno-ekonomskog okvira razvoja naselja i promene u domenu fizičke strukture, aktivnosti i uslova života, koje su se tokom razvojnog procesa na različit način manifestovale u odnosu na pojedine urbane celine.
AB  - This dissertation explores the transitions in the economic, spatial and social development of the Bajina Bašta settlement that were created under the influence of the construction of hydroelectric power plants 'Bajina Bašta'. The timeline of the research includes the period after the WWII from the beginning of the dynamic socialist urbanization in 1961 until 1989. The postwar development of Bajina Bašta represents a typical example of the settlement transformation according to the principles of socialist urbanization which presupposes industry as the framework of urban growth. The town development took place within planned electrification as one of the major development projects of socialist modernization in Yugoslavia that relied on technological achievements in the process of advancement of backward socio-economic relations. The aim of the research is to establish the connection between the construction of the hydroelectric power plants and the development and modernization of the Bajina Bašta settlement, and to determine the nature and extent of the perceived impact in relation to the specificity of the socio-economic system and the contemporary technological conditions. Referring to the theoretical proposition of Henri Lefebvre that technological development influences the modelling of urban space through social action, the research starts from the assumption that the process of electrification, which in the broader sense implies the general availability of electricity, influences the shift of production modes and the way of living, and that the construction of power plant, as a complex structure of a specific function, plays a major role in the process of urban development. The impact of the hydroelectric power plant on the development and modernization of the Bajina Bašta settlement is considered within the introduced theoretical and interpretative aspects. Relying on the theoretical concept of modernity as a starting point the research takes into account various interpretations of modernization, determining the basic characteristics, factors and conditions for modernization process realization in relation to the aspects of technological development, with a special emphasis on establishing a connection with electrification and industrialization within the framework of socialist ideology. Interpretative part of the research includes the case study of the Bajina Bašta settlement during the construction and after the commissioning of the hydroelectric power plants, which analyzes the role of electrification in the process of town evolvent in relation to the economic growth, urban development and social changes. It also includes the review of the influence of electrification on local economy advancement of the Uţice town at the beginning of the 20th century. The research considers as well the general influence on the local surrounding area in relation to technological features of the facility. Interpretation of the research results gives a comparative analysis of the previous state and the realized changes according to the established criteria, and analysis of the negative consequences in case of possible unwanted event during the power plants operation. This defines the influence of the facility on the settlement development and modernization within a wider theoretical framework that connects technological innovations with aspects of everyday life. The dissertation concludes that the construction of HPP 'Bajina Bašta' during the period of socialist modernization influenced the establishment of a new socio-economic framework for the settlement development and changes in the domain of physical structure, activities and living conditions, which manifested in different ways in relation to individual urban continent.

AB  - During the process of socialist modernization, initiated after WWII, large development projects in Serbia were the main drivers of urban transformation. Electrification and industrialization resulted in the establishment of new production modes, which defined a new socio-economic background for the development of settlements and the modification of their functional and morphological structure. The construction of the Bajina Bašta hydroelectric power station, in the middle section of the Drina River in western Serbia, was one of the development projects, and it triggered the transformation of the environment, upgrading the pre-war small town of Bajina Bašta into a new urban node, adjusted to the socialist imperatives and standards of progress.

AB  - This paper demonstrates the link between the construction of hydroelectric power plant and the development of settlements in the surrounding area. The influence of electrification and industrialization in urban restructuring is viewed through different social conditions in the socio-political system, which determines the nature and engagement of investments, and the degree of technological development, which conditions the possibility of electric energy use. In this way, the distinctiveness in the economic, spatial and social development of settlements was observed relative to the stimulus of hydroelectric plant in different socio- economic and technical and technological conditions and it may serve as the foundation for defining the set of guidelines in the planning of restructuring and developing settlements.
